It's annoying to see what scammers will do to pass bootleg or repro games as real. Recently I found a thread on a site with a guy claiming to sell "reproduction" copies of Thrill Kill, an unreleased PS1 game. There was even a Dreamcast copy he was selling of a game that was never planned for the Dreamcast! Really all he did was download the ISO files, burn them onto black CD-Rs (including the Dreamcast one, lol), and put nice labels on them. Then he skirted around answering inquires about them being copies or pressed games and in the description said something like "These games will not work normally on your system unless you do an extra step! Message me before you buy so I can explain it to you." Essentially saying that he'll tell you that you will need to either chip your system or use a swap trick to get a burned game running because that's all these were.
+MrMario2011 Well thrill kill was never properly released. All the code was put out by an angry dev after their almost complete game was shelved over bullshit controversy. If he is selling them as reproduction he is right.
+Gargan tuace actually I believe you can still sell with your feedback private. have no idea why its allowed :O I mean I know the reason, its so people can have privacy. but unfortunately too many ass holes tend to take advantage of the 'privacy' tool
+Derek Woods You're wrong. Sellers can not have private feedback. When he stopped listing items he could change to private. If he tried to list something, ebay would force him to make his feedback public again. The reason it was originally set up as an option is people didn't want friends or family members to see their purchase history, or what was being bought on their buying accounts so ebay set this up as an option to hide that information.
Give it 5-6 years, the market is going to be dead and games will be back down to normal prices. This shit is making people want to quit collecting. It's going to be the baseball/basketball cards of the 90s and comic book collecting all over again.
+Bradley Logan id LOVE to see this.. I fear the rare SNES game market and im sure others too, are being stealth swarmed by fakes designed to look real from chinese manufacturers and sometimes I have no idea how to tell the difference.
The good news is, if you chargeback an ebay seller/ the paypal account it was associated with that has gone "no longer registered" you instantly get the case decided in your favor with customer support and your money back.
This guy reminds me of a line from the Simpsons "Oh Bart, why couldn't you have forged plausible grades?" I dunno how anyone could look at his offerings and not throw up red flags.
There are retro gaming shops in the UK that are now selling reproduction carts but worse still they are also playing dumb when questioned about there legitimacy!!
yeap, I recently got burnt on Ebay 11-20-16 bought a complete fake copy of Breath of Fire 2 super nintendo, and by the time the game got to me, the guy completely deleted his ebay account or any trace to get at him. That was BS. Another thing they doing is claiming they shipped a given item you bought out of them, and of course it never gets ship to you, and when you reach the seller they tell you to file a claim with the delivery service since they provided a tracking number, but seriously the item never gets to you.
Fake shells and stickers are impossible. You need to see the circuit board to know if its a fake or not. When i bought earthbound i looked at the circuit board and had ppl at nintemdoage look at it to tell me its real
I bought a copy of Night Trap years ago on Ebay, the seller was selling mulitple copies but he never mailed them out. I can't remember if I was able to get my money back or not but i do remember his account was shut down a few weeks later.
There is someone named david-nihongames on ebay selling perfect repros of the more uncommon Super Famicom games like Ki Ki Kai Kai (Pocky & Rocky) and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. Yes, he is saying in the description that it is a repro, but the person whom buys it from him and tries to flip it may not.
I actually ordered one of the Little Samson's from this jerk for $89 bucks I think it was. The pictures were stolen from other eBay sellers. In the back of my mind I knew it was too good to be true, but I only had a second to think about it before the BIN was gone. Thank God for eBay buyer protection!
Yeah it's obvious he didn't have anything to sell in the first place. I don't think he's selling repros I think he's just getting as much cash as he can as quickly as possible
I recently purchased what I thought was a legit Shining Force CD on Ebay, and it turned out to be a Repro, and a bad one at that. Hell, the Manual didn't even have a spot for the Registration card. Luckily the seller was cool about it and let me return it for a full refund. I then did some research and found a 100% legit copy of just the disc, and am now looking to find a 100% legit manual and original case. That one is gonna be a challenge....
Have you guys seen the unopened copy of Hagane that sold for like 30k on ebay. The item is extremely rare but not THAT valuable, right?? Yes it was a blockbuster exclusive, and yes a sealed copy is exceedingly rare as I remember the game being for rental only but still..... here is the ebay sold page= OH WAIT actually the listing has been removed but it still shows up on completed listings. just search on ebay Hagane SNES and then completed listings, highest price first..... holy shit. DO you guys know about this and do you think its fake.
Pat, I recently bought a really good looking Demon's Crest on Ebay. It was very light and I opened it up and it had someones initials inside and the pins looked brand new and I felt iffy about it, so I traded it.
Between the high prices and tons of recent fakes. I think this is the beginning of the end for collecting. I'm starting to think it's time to sell off my collection, but I'm so afraid to do it with all the fraud. As I literally have about 10 grand in nearmint boxed, as in cardboard not just case Turbo Graf, Saturn, and Sega CD games from my youth. A few are sealed such as a Magic Knight Ray on the Saturn. Also Pat if your reading do you happen to know if the guy in Sutterville PA outside Pittsburgh (well back then) still owns one of those WNC Gold carts? I remember we played it in 98 and thought he was nuts for paying a grand it then.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the rom image of Lobo for the SNES being hosted online right now. I made a video about it & I'm hosting the rom image on my website. Reproduction copies of Lobo for the SNES was being sold for awhile until the scumbag seller found out that I was attempting to extract the rom file out of my cartridge to host it online. He immediately pulled the game off the listing at his website.
I'm pretty sure that if you bought one of his games and then told Ebay he sold you counterfeit merchandise you would likely get your money back. Now that Ebay and Paypal are under the same company they can reverse the transaction even if you sent him the money immediately after a buy it now.
The real funny thing is that when you're in "new seller status" (which he/she was), you have to wait a minimum amount of time, usually around a week-week and a half, before Paypal releases the money from a hold placed on new(er) sellers.. As you add tracking information and mark as shipped, it DOES reduce the days to have to wait out before your/their money clears, but unless it has arrived at it's destination (verified through tracking), you/they will ultimately wait for up to if not over two weeks for the money to actually clear. Point? There is a good chance their wasn't too much fuckery and/or scamming actually occurring. Should have been enough time for seasoned gamers/collectors to notice and have it remedied by eBay. People new to the game... That's another story.
on snes games a good way to tell if they are real is look at the rom and the numbers will match up with the numbers on the front of the bottom left of the label.
This is why I only buy my Japanese imports from a man and woman from Japan in Japan and it is always quality, but high. It is sad and pisses me off about fake games.. I am on disability and can't buy often, so a real game is important to me.
I received a fake Pokemon Platinum from Player’s Choice Video Games. I had to pay shipping and handling to get a refund. The cover was non-holographic and the print was darker and slightly smudgy.
The Honda Generator you mentioned is interesting and could likely tie in. China has started bootlegging a lot of popular engines and related "construction" stuff in their factories. I know I went with my dad to Harbor Freight and he bought a cheap engine for his rototiller that was a knockoff of a big brand (I think Honda), I'm guessing around the size of the generator. It's branded differently, but I've heard Central and South America has a lot of the same knockoff stuff coming in that's falsely branded as the laws are so lax. Granted, I'm far from an expert in the field.
You know its funny you mention this now Pat, cause my brother who works at half price books just a got in a fake labeled Earthbound. We still arent sure if it actually is a fake cart, but The label is definately wrong from what I've seen. It bothers me that people do this shit, cause you know these scumbags will sell it to some poor sucker who is none the wiser.
The continuation of this happening more often is going to really legitimize the professionals that sell retro and actually know about the product. Ebay is now equal to a street peddler.
You said that you shouldnt be paid immediately, i disagree... Because ive had people who will buy the item and then make every excuse or even not message back, and then theirs a huge process to get the listing fees back and everything.
I'm getting more and more paranoid of eBay sellers these days. Now i'm only buying from 100% feedback sellers and I still check their feedback even though it's all positive.
Hahaha, okay I'll admit it. This guy totally got me. Bought and paid for a complete in box Space Megaforce the first day he started listing. The price was pretty low, but would've been in the ballpark about a year ago so I figured he just hadn't kept up with the market. At the time he had 100% feedback (in the 50ish range)with several recent sales of some midrange games so there wasn't much to suspect. It wasn't until I saw in the next couple days that he had sold like 2 other copies of the same game (among all the other ridiculous crap) that I realized he was just a scammer (did some research and apparently he had stolen the photo from some seller in the Netherlands). Fortunately eBay's buyer protection is great and I won't have to worry about getting a refund, just a waste of time. Dude was pretty dumb and sold enough he's probably opened himself to eBay going after him for fraud.
+Gargan tuace Got you too huh? Did he try sending you screen shots from UA-cam channels like he did me? lol They refunded me this morning, but I'm still waiting for it to go through ...
+Joe Snes Haha, worst club ever! I didn't bother talking to him much once I realized what he was up to, called him out on the stolen pics and he insisted they were of the actual item lol. I have to wait until tomorrow till I can put my claim in with eBay, hopefully they refund quickly.
+Gargan tuace Yeah, dumb-ass buyers of the week ... week ... week! lol Don't worry, eBay is very good to their buyers. Never had a problem getting refunds quickly.
Actually, $45 for Super Smash Bros. Melee isn't really questionable, granted you know that you're getting a genuinely good deal. I got a copy of the game from a college friend of mine for that price.
Recently after watching a "How to spot a fake.." video I went back and looked at some Pokemon games I bought off eBay. 3 of the 6 were fake. Obvious fakes because the Nintendo Seal was wrong. At the time I didn't know though. Live and learn.
WARNING to EVERYBODY! You can get really high quality copies of very rare games off of aliexpress for 20-30 bucks now. Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Earthbound and even rarer games are readily available straight from a chinese bootleger. Has anyone obtained one who is willing to post detailed breakdown pictures to help other collectors determine if it's a fake?
I did buy an ASCII Gamecube controller off of this user for $80. It was in a beat up ORIGINAL box w/ styrofoam, and the controller didnt look new. I say this because you can buy the repro controllers for around this price as well So, for the 1 LEGIT item this guy sold, it went to me, and I hope to make profit off this as it doesnt look fake (or new)
What i don't understand is what they are doing is obviously illegal, and not just against ebays terms but actually a crime aka fraud. Why do people who get scammed not file charges?
hey I resent that ian. I once upon a time used to make a 120,000 a year and had almost every rare game known to man. minus a few like air raid and Pepsi invaders and nwc gold had grey. in 2010 I got into some trouble and I needed a huge amount of money so my eBay account was flooded with my entire collection. of course I sold it all for normal asking price but a slight cheaper to sell it fast. I had everything rare in box from nes and up
i know there was a guy selling reporductions, and the wild guns photo is one of the photos. it clearly said in the description read below, and when reading below clearly stated they were reproduction games and not genuine originals. maybe he tried again after a while? i know i saw the wild guns up like 5 times and hagane from the same guy for like 80 bucks and 50 minutes left i was like omg does this guy have like 3 seller rating and no one wants to gamble on it? but then i read it was a repro and i out was outty. i have no problem with repros as long as they are explicitly labeled as such and sold explicitly as such. it should always say reproduction on the label.
Oh dude... Sega CD and Saturn games have become a fucking NIGHTMARE to try and buy on Ebay these days! You REALLY have to be careful because literally 80% of the titles on there, especially the more rare stuff, are Repro's, many being really well done Repro's. You literally have to look for the serial numbers on the disc to be sure. And it's even tougher when trying to buy just an authentic manual or manual and case for a Sega CD or Saturn game. There are signs to look for but when looking at Ebay pictures it can be VERY difficult to tell if a Manual or case is original or not. I am still not really sure of any surefire ways to determine whether a Sega CD or Saturn Manual or Case/Artwork are authentic or not, aside from examining the artwork VERY closely for print quality, something that is very difficult to do from Ebay pictures. I am currently trying to locate an authentic Shining Force CD Manual and Case to put my disc in but am finding it extremely difficult to know for sure of one is a repro or not. Does anyone have any surefire tips on how to authenticate Sega CD Manuals and/or cases?
isn't there any way for these people who are knowingly selling counterfeit games to be prosecuted? that may sound harsh to some people but something's gotta give here.
DJVolte1 Yea I know but I'm one of those stick in the mud's who feels less satisfied playing the game on an Emulator lol. Although with that particular title I may have absolutely no choice =/.
You should sell on ebay for a little bit so you understand how it works. This seller may say immediate payment required to attempt to take the money and run but ebay with their MBG will cover you either way. That doesn't make what he does ok. He's been kicked off of ebay though. He probably got on with another account. If so these games will still be there.
if its an exact copy of the original case in all, who cares if it a bootlag. you know in like 20 years none of these original carts are gona work anymore.
I've been pondering that. Do most collectors realize that their games will one day not work? I think disc-based games are supposed to degrade faster. But either way, can you imagine what happens to the retro market? My collection is mostly disc-based PC and console games and I have most games backed up on CD-R. I'm still not sure how I would feel if the actual disc stopped working. Is having the big box and a CD-R good enough at that point? I don't know...
Not making fun, really, as I find it amusing to hear Ian say 4 'S' words in a row. This guy ith a thcumbag theller, it thucks, it's thad." It's actually quite endearing, like a Sean Connery thing.
Ebay allows these fools to pull this shit. So they closed his account down, guess what it isnt hard to create a new one and get back to doing this all over again.
+Stringer Bell no, but he'll have to wait three months at least before the new account limits are lifted. As you can only run 10 auctions and $1000 total your first three months as a member. He joined in October so this was his 4th month when he started this scam. Plus he might need to find a new IP address and credit card number ect.
+MRW2276 Too bad there is such a thing as stealth accounts these limits mean nothing. You're assuming ppl like this are playing by the rules they aren't.
MRW2276 Yes you can purchase shell accounts online that have no restrictions as to selling or paypal withdrawal. Its common practice which is why I say there is really nothing to deter scammers from hooking up with ebay and screwing you and me over.
the only time I used ebay I picked up like 5 or something games I really wanted for a long time at retail price and 2 of them were black label symphony of the night and clock tower 2 and they both were just the outside of the manuals,.. just the outside covers and there was no way telling in the posts from 2 different sellers id beat the fucking shit out of both of them,. lots of loser trash on ebay doing anything for a buck - great vid
eBay should not allow feedback ratings to be hidden.
True, but it should also allow you to leave negative feedback for bad buyers as well.
+Mitjitsu It boils my blood that you cannot leave negative feedback for non payers! What's that about?!
+Mitjitsu Its very hard to give a buyer a bad feedback score.
+Lukas Peruzovic it's impossible eBay does not let you wether the buyer pays or not that's my point
+Lukas Peruzovic It's basically impossible in my experience.
I love how excited Pat is to use the sound effect and how annoyed Ian looks.
It's annoying to see what scammers will do to pass bootleg or repro games as real.
Recently I found a thread on a site with a guy claiming to sell "reproduction" copies of Thrill Kill, an unreleased PS1 game.
He's already gone. Wow
no longer a registered user
Benjamin Lawrence I wonder if he was kicked off, or if he just bailed.
+AlexanderTheNotSoGreat How do you even know?
Yea hell create a new one again go to ali express the are everywhere
Justice!
You should talk about spotting bootlegs. Like tips and tricks
You should still let Ian do his own delay. It gives the segment it's own charm lol.
Damn, *that's* what i call a scumbag seller!
Why the fuck is feedback hiding even an option?
+ArmouredLemming It's an option, but if you make it private you aren't allowed to sell anything.
+Gargan tuace actually I believe you can still sell with your feedback private. have no idea why its allowed :O I mean I know the reason, its so people can have privacy. but unfortunately too many ass holes tend to take advantage of the 'privacy' tool

Exactly what I was thinking. Granted some of these games are probably never going to go down in price, but honestly this isn't going to last forever.
Ive come from the future. Sorry to inform you but the hobby has only gotten larger and prices have soared.
Hey Ian you should do a video dedicated to helping people spot bootlegs! You definitely got the knowledge dude.
+Bradley Logan id LOVE to see this.. I fear the rare SNES game market and im sure others too, are being stealth swarmed by fakes designed to look real from chinese manufacturers and sometimes I have no idea how to tell the difference.
+PartyGameNetwork it's getting harder and harder I spotted a hagane on eBay for 90 for the pal copy and I'm torn wether to pic it up
The good news is, if you chargeback an ebay seller/ the paypal account it was associated with that has gone "no longer registered" you instantly get the case decided in your favor with customer support and your money back.
Look of death at :11... Thanks for the nightmares Pat.

***** A massive sticker that someone could remove in the future and then sell the game for a much higher price? ;)
Report them for violations of the Trades Descriptions Act.

Come on man, you're Tony Stark!
Can't you figure that out for yourself?? jk xD
lol
Fake shells and stickers are impossible. You need to see the circuit board to know if its a fake or not. When i bought earthbound i looked at the circuit board and had ppl at nintemdoage look at it to tell me its real

accurate
im so glad i found these guys
I bought a copy of Night Trap years ago on Ebay, the seller was selling mulitple copies but he never mailed them out. I can't remember if I was able to get my money back or not but i do remember his account was shut down a few weeks later.
Pat should I buy ROck and roll racing for SNES ? would you do you own it ?
Thanks for pointing out scumbag sellers Pat and Ian.
seems as though there are a lot of fake gba games on ebay from Malaysia and hong kong, how is this allowed to continue?
Nick p eBay is slowly turning into ali express
Now I’m paranoid some of my games might be fake. It’s hard to tell these day.
There is someone named david-nihongames on ebay selling perfect repros of the more uncommon Super Famicom games like Ki Ki Kai Kai (Pocky & Rocky) and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy.

I freaking miss you Ian!!
You actually finally added delay to the vox instead of just reverb! Progress! WOO! Haha
wildguns my most favorite game of all time
a subterranean dork not nearly as good as wildguns
Love that game so much!
Have you guys seen the unopened copy of Hagane that sold for like 30k on ebay. The item is extremely rare but not THAT valuable, right?? Yea but got my copy from blockbuster in 1999 for 7.99 ;)
Pat will make another nes review, I just have to wait.
He's releasing a book reviewing them all. I'm sure he'll have more time to do videos after that.
Happy that my Pocky and Rocky 2 is the real deal, since I've had it since I was a kid! Love that game!
Pat, I recently bought a really good looking Demon's Crest on Ebay. It was very light and I opened it up and it had someones initials inside and the pins looked brand new and I felt iffy about it, so I traded it.
Pat should be put on Ebay's payroll to be the counterfeit police.

Pat what is the other guy's name? Your friend on the left. I am fairly new to the retro channels.

Pat, spot my bench press man
like the Duckhunt Amiibo in the foreground

I'm glad you used a delay rather than a reverb this time... but tighten it up! C'mon ! :)
what is that computer above his head? a nintendo programming center??? :O need more info on this thing!!!

I ordered from him, no tracking number. He didn't send repros, he sent nothing.
seriously though eBay needs counterfeit police for this type of stuff

What are hue cards ? If I spelled it right.
If you guys want a good nightmare, Look up some of the craigslist ads for games.
I did buy an ASCII Gamecube controller off of this user for $80. It was in a beat up ORIGINAL box w/ styrofoam, and the controller didnt look new. I say this because you can buy the repro controllers for around this price as well
So, for the 1 LEGIT item this guy sold, it went to me, and I hope to make profit off this as it doesnt look fake (or new)
i read "Fake Explosive Games on Ebay" XD
What i don't understand is what they are doing is obviously illegal, and not just against ebays terms but actually a crime aka fraud. Why do people who get scammed not file charges?
great job guys... looks like he shut down... probably reopened under a different profile
hey I resent that ian. I had everything rare in box from nes and up
What's pat use to make his voice sound all cool?
i know there was a guy selling reporductions, and the wild guns photo is one of the photos. it clearly said in the description read below, and when reading below clearly stated they were reproduction games and not genuine originals. maybe he tried again after a while? i know i saw the wild guns up like 5 times and hagane from the same guy for like 80 bucks and 50 minutes left i was like omg does this guy have like 3 seller rating and no one wants to gamble on it? but then i read it was a repro and i out was outty.
i have no problem with repros as long as they are explicitly labeled as such and sold explicitly as such. it should always say reproduction on the label.
Is this any good
Also he is no longer a registered eBay user.
Very scummy thing to do to new Turbografx-16 collectors.
looks like a lot of it is already gone
Ahhhh Beyond Shadowgate...the only Shadowgate game I will never have or even get a chance to play :,( .
DJVolte1 Yea I know but I'm one of those stick in the mud's who feels less satisfied playing the game on an Emulator lol.
Although with that particular title I may have absolutely no choice =/.
DJVolte1 Yea =/, the sad truth lol.
Yeah, that is a dead giveaway. No one has that many hard to find games at one time.
Someone who collected for a long time, but is getting out of collecting for whatever reason?
+Ryan Amberger no
can we just get a all in 1 system and have the games be downloadable only
the time machine exists!!!
I'm done with Ebay
his feedback is "private" lol
Apparently hager1080 is a listener lol
Ninja Gaiden on the PCE is the best ninja gaiden you can buy...discuss
No it's not the Nes original is the best.
if its an exact copy of the original case in all, who cares if it a bootlag. you know in like 20 years none of these original carts are gona work anymore.
exactly! you buy games to enjoy them, not to elevate your "gamer status" and wear fuggin' monocles.
I don't know...
ali express sells this stuff comes outta China I got nailed on some gba games a while back if it comes from China it may be a bootleg
Lol, i got bonk 3 sealed.
He got me..what do I do now?
+Joshua l Open up a case in eBay's dispute center. Since he deleted his account, you'll automatically be refunded the money
youguys showed me GradeAunderA. damn he is funny. Collab between Ian and Grade?
this is why i shop amazon
I don't have time to look... but I have MORE copies of those games then you're mentioning, so what?
Sentinel Returns
So what?
You going to sell me them CiB mint for 80$?
Because their value is 4-8x that.
If not; that's "so what".
You mean accounts that have been hacked? Or the ones people buy from hackers? As I'm not sure what else a stealth account is.
MRW2276 Yes you can purchase shell accounts online that have no restrictions as to selling or paypal withdrawal. Its common practice which is why I say there is really nothing to deter scammers from hooking up with ebay and screwing you and me over.
I'm tired of all this fake crap, just give me real games.
Yes, but we're they............SEAL'D!??
Ahh ga gah gah ga gah. But seriously, good to see this forger called out. 👍
the only time I used ebay I picked up like 5 or something games I really wanted for a long time at retail price and 2 of them were black label symphony of the night and clock tower 2 and they both were just the outside of the manuals,.. just the outside covers and there was no way telling in the posts from 2 different sellers id beat the fucking shit out of both of them,. lots of loser trash on ebay doing anything for a buck - great vid
You want a bootleg game? Just get a fucking emulator. Lol it's funny when people try to pass off a rom CD for the real deal.
I have no doubt that he is brazilian!
I own pocky and rocky 2
God bless Scumbag Seller of the Week!! my favorite show!!! keep it up boys :D !!!
