- It's been 22 years since the release of the Star Wars Special editions, yet George Lucas continues to change the Han Shot first scene, he may have gone too far in a few places.
Han didn't shoot first.
He's the only one who shot.

George Lucas obviously wanted the special edition to match his original vision and the DVD changes were for continuity. But where it went too far was the edited Han and Greedo scene and not releasing the unaltered version.

I mean a lot of the changes with all the strange creatures and all was most likely due to the fact that he was a really good world builder, but even then that doesn’t explain why some scenes like Greedo firing at Han was added.

While I can understand that Lucas was not happy with some of the effects that were not available during the time of filming, example, the Landspeeder coming into Mos Eisley, they stated they rubbed some vaseline across the lens to blur out the fact the tires where visible where it was supposed to be "floating". But damn George, you altered it to death.
By this point, it has become a running gag. What I love about this is that George made that final change back in 2012, and had Disney sat on it for 7 years before they unveil to the public through their Disney+ just troll the old fans. That is hilarious.
Gabriel Blume Exactly, once Lucas dies there is finally a point where it will be 100% impossible to get official unspecialized cuts of the original trilogy. Lucas is taking his original cuts with him to the grave by forming a legal loophole that will not allow the original cuts to ever be released officially.
8:20 I think we need a version where the wall Han is sitting in front of is some sort of reflective shield, so the shot simply bounces off the wall and hits Greedo. Greedo shot first, and he shot himself.

I really respect it though. He views them as art and not pieces of consumable media. I’ve dabbled I’m painting and Occasionaly I will go back and touch up certain spots every so often months later. I know I shouldn’t and I should just leave it be but I never really feel that it’s finished and I think that’s what George has been experiencing. He’s not ever satisfied with the art he’s made and things it can be better. I respect his love for the craft even if it is a bit annoying. The mans an artist
It turns out that in the _original_ original script Han _didn't_ actually shoot first, he didn't shoot at all. Greedo just died of a heart attack and Han said "Boring conversation anyway..." and walked off (this was moved to the Death Star scene later in production.) If you're interested in seeing it then you're in luck, George is set to re-edit ANH again in 2030 to put this in as well as digitally replacing Sir Alec Guinness with Ewan McGregor because _why the fuck not?_

It was perfect in the 1st place, and I love you.
The best part is to show that the shot would explain how people would just shoot ever enemy without digression meaning that dialog would always be needed to understand the full exposure that both characters would be going though. He said that he used the Han Solo shot because it was always changeable, similar to many other shots that had extreme impact but was taken lighter than intended. Every character had a story so that should compliment the full script, from beginning to end, to beginning again.

I know what you were talking about, I was born in 1993 but did not see Star Wars until 2000, and only saw the GOUT DVD in 2015, when I found out about this shit I just couldn't believe it, I taught they couldn't mess with films after they were released.
How do I tell everyone, the unaltered version of all three movies is available on the complete boxset. I have them, on DVD.

All three original theatrical versions are on the Limited edition DVD's on the bonus discs
2006 release, thereabouts. Transfers are apparently from the laserdisc releases

There is a DVD of the 1977 Theatrical version (where Han is the only one that shoots) as well as ESB and RTOJ. It’s was released in 2008 DVD box set.
Glad I bought the dvd release that features the original version when everyone was bitching at it being in animorphic widescreen.

You know, I have an idea for how to make the "Han shot first" debacle change, maybe for the better. Keep the "Maclunkey" line, but as Greedo gets to the second syllable, THEN Han shoots. That'll make it better, maybe.

As a kid, I remember being kind of shocked that Han shot Greedo in kind of an under-handed way. It wasn't two people having a fast draw at high noon. The scene is important because it's indicative of the type of person Han Solo is. He's an opportunist and survivor.

I think a lot of people forget that George Lucas is a massive troll. I’m certain the changes to the scene are purely made to mess with us at this point and I think I understand. Does it frustrate me? Yes but not much. Yes, you joke about it, but I would not be surprised if he had another edit released upon his demise where Han doesn’t even shoot but instead moves his head to the side and the blaster ricochets of the wall and kills Greedo.

What are you talking about? The Blu-Ray edition in 2011 certainly didn't have this "Maclunky" thing. The only change in that one was that they shoot at each other at the same time. "Maclunky" first appeared a few days ago on Disney+.
I still have my unaltered VHS tapes. No VHS player but I'm not getting rid of those tapes.

I don't even understand how Han shooting first would not be self defence. If a man has you at gunpoint and is gloating about how he's going to kill you then shooting him is self defence. I have to say: I'm one of the few people that have no problems with the Special Editions, but I think it's enough! And I want the original version of the movies available, too. I have this wonderful BLADE RUNNER-DVD-Box with all (5 I believe) versions of the movie. Please do the same with STAR WARS!

In the 1977 version, Han was the only one who shot, you can’t shoot first if you’re the only one who shot. For all the versions past 1977, Greedo shot first ever so slightly before Han. So in every version Han never shot first

I remember people cringing at some of the special edition scenes back in 1997.
Sadly that was the only edition I was able to watch when I was a kid, being born in 1984. I found out about these changes way later. I was always wondering what was this CGI doing in such an old film, it seemed out of place. Initially I thought that they were masking some old effects with new CGI, I didn't realize these are whole new scenes and alterations.
