Sorting Out a "Restored" 1971 Buick GS Stage1 4 Speed Convertible PART 1

  • Once a car gets restored, it really needs to be put through the paces to wrap up the final 10% of the issues what will pop up once on the road. Some of the issues I've fixed on this car should have been caught before it was delivered to the owner. In this video, I cover convertible top pump bleeding and replacing incorrect door panel screws.
    Other items I've corrected on this car:
    - Horn button missing parts
    - Horn blows all the time
    - Incorrect turn signal switch
    - Trunk lock with no key
    - Leaking top pump lines
    - Trashed engine (cam starved of oil, ruined entire short block)
    - Missing trunk mat
    - Missing jack parts
    - Many small authenticity issues
    I still have a few items left to do before the owner takes back the car. It's unfortunate that some of these items should have been tackled as the car was being assembled, but I think it was hurried out the door to meet a show deadline.

    System is self bleeding when you cycle the top Up & Down & Up & Down many times, keep the reservoir fill plug un-installed .... (if it's over filled it will come out the fill hole so keep a rag under the reservoir, usually you need to keep adding many times until it finds it's full level). On my 69 Cutlass I had to replace both pistons that were leaking but still working if you filled the reservoir. I used Power Steering Fluid in the reservoir so if it leaks again it won't STINK like Transmission Fluid. Hint - there is a separate Power Top Breaker on the Fire Wall if it dies.
    My top was not oiled in 22 years and as I stopped it many times in different mid up & down positions, I sprayed the hinges with oil until it finally stopped creaking (place a rag around the top of the hinge you are spray oiling so the oil run off doesn't ruin your top and under the hinge so drips won't ruin your interior.

      Since I've done this video, I've found several ways to skin this cat. And yes, lubricating the frame in ALLLLL of those little joints is a game changer.

    Good information. I used DOT3 brake fluid on my 61 LaSabre only because it was used before I got the car. I would convert to ATF if a full flush is necessary down the road.

    Adam, Good to see you giving the level of attention to detail to this car that it deserves. And to the other cars you work on as well. That car deserved better when it was professionally restored years ago, but after I couldn't make a deal with the original owner to buy it. I'm sure the current owner values your skills and craftsmanship more than he tells you.

    Hard to believe a car like that would have come with 6-cylinder Skylark wheel covers. It has to stay original but would look so much better with Rallyes,

    Creaking sounds scarey . Can’t believe they installed the switch backwards .

      I lubed up all of the joints since I doubt it's ever seen any. Most of the convertible tops I have seen will have some creaking etc...but that doesn't make it any less scary LOL

      Some of that 'creaking' you hear there is the small springs being stretched out in-line with the top frame cables on either side, I was happy to discover that when I was freaked out by that noise early in my Skylark convertible rookie owner period. I'd have to go peek for sure but I think I remember the springs are hiding in sleeves at the underside of the top edge. The top still raises and lowers pretty well even if one spring is broken, I discovered after a bit!
