I think Hasbro anticipated the movie being a bit of a hit. Along with Tunnel Rat, I also remember Jinx, Falcon, and Chuckles being stocked heavily. And I definitely remember a lot- a LOT- of those Slaughter's Renegades and Cobra-La three-packs at every store I went to.
@@gishmoe3088 As a kid I feel like GI Joe was always well stocked in General. We didn't have this 5 figure wave system that is always sold out like today. There were 20 figures for the year in various assortments.
Techno Viper is my favorite from 1987. I played with my first Techo Viper so much that I broke him the first day I got him as a kid. I found another one at a yard sale a few years later and was glad to get him. I found another one last year. He makes a great army builder.

Gold Helmet Destro “my fav figure still tied with Tomax and Xamot”! Love those guys.. also Road Pig, BOA , Zartan with his brother and sister , as well as dreadknocks.. Tunnel Rat and Survival ! Tempted on hunting down Zartan with Swamp Swamp Skiff and still in box .., Serpentor with his chariot in box , Tomax and Xamot in box. And Zanzibar in box .. going to be hard to find the OG figures in the boxes .. but feel like I need these for a missing part of my kid hood.. would hide away in the closet lol

I think Tunnelrat is great. Love this figure and as a kid really wanted him. When I finally found him in the store I was so happy. Great memories. You guys are right about the gun. Great list
For me I loved Big Boa. As a boxing fan I thought he was awesome though he never got much representation. I found one complete with card back years later at a toy convention I was quick to pick him up. I had no competition, 2 other sellers where trying to sell theirs to me to lol
Lots of coolness from 87 Tunnel Rat Jinx Big Boa (One of my all time favourite Cobras) Croc Master Cobra La Sgt Slaughters Renegades...I think that in terms of popularity this may have been the peak of GI JOE.
I had the Tiger Force version of Outback and I always found him way cooler than the original version, the white hair and beard suited him better in my opinion and he was my top favorite! It’s only recently that I found out that the “Tiger Force” GI Joes were European Exclusives, so don’t know how well you know that series
1987 was a year of awesome figures, shockingly bad figures, and nothing in between. This is also the year when the vehicles started to become easy passes. And BF2000, a great idea poorly realized. And about 10 seconds of entertainment having a GI Joe figure I impatiently waited months for do the Superbowl Shuffle before tossing him into storage.
I loved the Gung-Ho, Falcon and Tunnel Rat. I liked the WORMS without the helmet as a Cobra general. Or....switching head molds and making him a Major Bludd. Law is ok. Outback is OK. Chuckles is kind of cooler now after some of the things the comics have done with him, but his figure alone is meh.
From this list, I think Jinx would be my favorite even though I don't have her now (and don't remember if I did then). That's gotta be the influence of the movie, though, and my love of martial arts cinema where they do nonsensical stuff like purposely fight blind.
You guys have been right on the money with all these top 10 lists. Tunnel Rat was a peg warmer back when I was a kid.

Yeah, 87 was the beginning of the down hill slide, but it was the beginning of the new wave of toys that interested the same audience.

I don't own the European Tiger Force figures, but I know all about them. Blew my mind when I saw pictures of them online is the late 90's.
I used my GI Joes as wrestlers so I loved guys like Chuckles who looked more realistic so I could use them in my fig fed.
That's interesting. I did like to use toys as every day people sometimes so it was nice to have people not covered in grenades.

Yeah the valley between the great figures and the strange figures really grew.

She's a cool one! I played with her all the time. I'm pretty sure ai got her in my Easter Basket back in the day.
