Taken from their fifth studio album, Keep Moving, British band Madness released Michael Caine in February 1984 when it spent eight weeks in the UK chart, peaking at number 11. It is unusual for the fact that lead vocals are sung not by Suggs, but by Chas Smash, who wrote the song with drummer Woody.
More serious than most other Madness videos up to that point, the promo for Michael Caine was based on the actor's film The Ipcress File and the song tackles the subject of an IRA informer during the troubles in Northern Ireland. The 'my name is Michael Caine' sample was recorded by Caine himself, who was persuaded to do it by his daughter.

One of the most underrated MADNESS hit singles
Never been underrated.
This is their best song!
@@55teebone It's rarely mentioned as a top Madness song and UA-cam viewing stats suggest it not close to being one of their mot popular songs.
So,yeah it's underrated.
@@Coxy_Wrecked UA-cam viewing stats! Forgetting the decades of people appreciating this song before UA-cam ever existed. Given that UA-cam is used far more by younger people, all it shows is younger people 'underrating' it.
I always loved It. Those chorus ....
Michael Caine did the voiceover as his daughter was a big fan of Madness.
Everybody should be they are BRILLIANT ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
True. Was in Smash Hits.
@World Mayhem Organisation , Was this voice futuristic then, as this is from 1984, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was from 88
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Caine_(song)
Not many people know that.
The older I get the more I appreciate Madness.
Thanks to Michael caine himself for being a sport and doing the song with them!
Funny thing is, he initially refused to do the song until his daughter told him how massive Madness was.
brcaa really! I love little facts about madness like that.
A lot of people don't know that
Makes the song complete ❤️❤️❤️
@@ollyf5088 hehe v good
I'm on a Madness marathon. Yep, another classic.
It's Michael Caine. Legend has it, Madness asked him to do the voice-over and he refused, then his daughter said he was mad to refuse, as they were her favourite band. So he relented and spoke the lines.
Best song they ever did, IMO -- chord progression priceless.....
1:43 to 1:59 sounds a bit like David Bowie in my opinion.
I'm inclined to agree with you! I actually have the single on vinyl - bought when it came out (I'm showing my age). But a helluva nuanced song.
PS: everything I know about chords comes from M. Barson.
Takes me to 1984 and far happier days.
1000%
Is this one of the coolest songs Madness did or what.
this is a great song, although I would say it's a little more Bowie-esque than the usual Madness style , which is great too , of course
What.
THE coolest.

Grey day
I love the fact The legend that is Michael Caine recorded himself, introducing himself, for this great record.
Not many people know that
@@pale_saint 'a lot of'
What I loved about Madness, was just when you thought you knew them, they produced something totally different. They come across as a bunch of clowns, but they were an immensely talented group of of musicians. Chas Smash....massively under rated!
Yeah like theyd dance around and just be goofy. But then theres some string arrangements that make me hold back tears. These videos are so ahead of their time. They almost have like the feel of youtube videos. Like so funny, and you think their inexpensive to make, but obviously they were but like so masterfully done. A labor of love.
@@joeb6137 Still doing it now in 2020, but even better than way back when!
Totally 👍
They must be fairly intelligent to come up with a song like this

My favourite Madness single. Love it!
Michael Caine is supercool one of the greatest actors ever
The part he says my name is Michael caine really gets me lol. Love it ❤
you will never find a band as fun as madness
Cracking song, and a great departure from their usual stuff. For a band that's a national treasure, they're still somehow underrated.
The air sax and the the wink is pure inspiration - sums up a brilliant band.
The air sax and the others with their intense eye focus and hand pose on him is also "pure inspiration"(!!).
This was always one of my favourite Madness songs, I love the air of melancholy attached to this tune.
This has always been one of Madness's best tunes. Remember when it came out it felt like they'd suddenly grown up and taken a darker style. Brilliant song.
Different from the usual Madness hits. A band I think we take for granted sometimes.
Carl proving what a wonderful voice he has AND wordsmith (pun intended!) along with Woody’s songwriting skills.
These guys are so f#%king great! The 80's alt music was and is my favorite genre of rock. I'm 63, so this genre of music over 50's, 60's, 70's, 90's and beyond. All the decades produced (produce) great music, including up to the 2020's. But Madness defines my favorite era/genre of music.
If you can’t love madness you need help . Timeless sound .👌
brilliant. Being in Madness must have been one of the greatest experiences of being in any band, ever.
I love the fact that Madness did some very thoughtful, melancholic songs among the Nutty Sound. Love them x
Micheal Caine and Madness what a unique mix.
Looking back on these videos, the thought and effort that went into them is amazing. You really don't see anything like this anymore and its a real shame.
This is my all time favorite of Madness!
Indifferent to this when I first listened to divine madness as a kid preferring the better known pop songs but 30 years on it is hitting the spot.
Definitely one of their best.
One of their best songs!
Fantastic what a band. Brilliant 👍🇬🇧
The pure genius of brilliant lyrics and almost fairground tunes. Kept me going as a teen and still does. Finsbury Park forever ❤️
I thought this song was appropriate to listen to when I heard Sir Michael Caine had announced yet another retirement from acting this time at at age 90. Maybe this time he really means it, but I wouldn't be surprised or disapponted by at least one more triumphant comeback 🙂 I wish you many more good years Maurice!
I was a dispatch rider in London and often collected the master records from stiff records.
But did you get the free Friday pints?
If it ain’t Stiff... 😂
Honestly one of the greatest songs of all time in my opinion
A virtually forgotten unique little gem 😊
Ive just watched a quiz show and I thought this was the answer to a question, it wasn't but I came here to listen to it as I haven't heard this for 20 years. You're right, its a gem... Not forgotten though...
cornz38 and not many people know that.
Paul Whitehouse. 8-)
:-) never gets old...
A few years ago I was painting the ceiling and Mark Radcliffe was interviewing Michael Caine and after he was finished he played this. He said something like "I know it's obvious but sometimes it's OK to be obvious"
Absolutely brilliant song Truly great actor Michael Caine.
Last week in London I saw Mr Caine while at dinner and all I could think of was this song.
Great song!!!!!!!
My favourite Madness song.
Proof if it were needed that madness could at àny given moment produce beautiful music ..this track has so many wonderful things about it ..my favourite of theirs
The song they never seem to perform. One of the best madness songs in my opinion
Great song with simple lyrics! That ladies and gentlemen, were the 80's magical bands who were excellent singers as well as musicians.
Well said Arif ❤️❤️
Absolutely love this song. So different to all other tracks.
*Wings of a Dove was pretty out there also* 😊
Has to be my fav madness song- playing it constantly these days!
I hadn´t heard this in 30 + years. What a lovely tune!
I can remember going to the shops and buying Madness LPs back in the day. Now in my late 50s im watching them on here and hey I do not have any scratches no matter how many times I play this song on youtube :)
My favourite madness song and Michael Caine my favourite actor too.
Haunting, wistful and imaginative. Great song, thanks for posting.
An almost forgotten classic!. Yet as an aging Madness fan (55 +) can still remember the lyrics! 🤣
Madness lyrics are like riding a bike 😁
Madness never made a bad record Thanks lads ❤
Happy 90th birthday Michael Caine
Love this song
Awesome.
Chas Smash absolute legend 🎵😎🔥💯
Still my favourite Madness tune
The old guy was in The IPCRESS File with Michael Caine. Nice touch.
Don't think so, that was Nigel Green, He died in 1972!!!
What a fucking amazing track. Still have the original vinyl. Cheers, Madness, for chronicling my teenage years ☺️❤️
By far their best song
spyingcactus True m8. I often go around my city of Portsmouth. Doing my drum kit sound affect impression 2 this great song.
very overlooked
madness song. ..quality
I think this is one of their best ever.
Amazing song and one of Madness's most stylish video to accompany it, a song that still sounds new even these decades on.
it's Michael Caine's 90th birthday today,not many people know that 😀
this is my favorite madness song epic!
+Susan Peploe How about 'One better Day' ? 8D
Mine, too. It makes me happy.
And mine I othen do my drum kit impression (which is done by mouth alone (2my music on my i.pod. Which includes the Human League and the Jam.
Funny enough sweet ♥️. It happens to be my favourite Madness song. And I love doing my drum kit sound affect impression (which sounds like the real thing.) 2 this great track. By Madness. ♥️♥️
Likewise. Susan Sweet ♥️ I'm a mega big Human League fan. And I really think that u should definitely listen to the Human League song. Which is my favourite Human League single. And it's called 1man in my ♥️.
Fantastic British classic ...... Michael cain a proper British hero 🇬🇧
Michael Caine, Madeness...all i love in that country! French fan 70yo!
just read the text with a fresh french akzent because of the "madeness" :-D
This song has always struck a sad chord with me since childhood, like accepting a loss
Makes sense
From what Ive read, the song depicts a Troubles-era informant going mad.
@@no1reallycaresabout2The Troubles were unbelievably bad. I grew up in the seventies and eighties and it seemed like it would never end with atrocities all the time by loyalists and the IRA. Absolutely shocking.
It's noticeable how many of the songs written and sung by Cathal were quite reflective and so different from the exuberant character he mostly portrayed. But that's cool - this is a great song.
Suddenly recognised the location of the intro. The big grey building at the top of the street was the TV-am studios in Camden. The car travels down Stucley Place. Just had a look at it on Google maps. It's changed a lot, but it's still identifiable.
The was my old man’s favorite Madness song
Such an underrated song
Such an underrated band, brilliant track. 💞
What is their rating anyhow?
One of my favourite bands a best of 1980s bands e music 🎶
Shear brilliance my favourite madness song
A very good and clever song. Shame its not more widely recognized
What is this song about? It's a great song but I never got it and why is it about Michael Caine?
@@TONYCOV881 It's about an informer during 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. Chas Smash, who wrote and sang the song, has Irish parents.
@@coolmacatrain9434 Ok Thanks!
Was HUGE in the right circles in the US back in the day. Was in my teens when this came out.

Cathal Smyth (Chas Smash) has a great crooning voice on this. It's a pity he didn't do more lead vocals for the band. Mind you, he's really good at classy shouting as well.....see "One Step Beyond". Michael Caine initially refused to record on it until his daughter told him how massive Madness were!
I always thought it was sampled
Chas used to be second singer to Suggs on lots of Madness hits. As well as chief Nutcase. The whole band has been underrated probably because they were never really taken seriously. But many of their lyrics are very profound and moving, all wrapped in good music and fun but never losing their weight for all that.
I believe he was slated to be lead vocalist on the second single from the album - Victoria Gardens, except that ended up not neing the second single in the end, and they went for the Suggs fronted One Better Day instead.
Both great songs - would've preferred Victoria Gardens myself.
That's why the artwork for the One Better Day single looks like it'd be more at home for a single about a London park than a home for dossers.
@@Pauldjreadman No, I remember MC talking about it at the time. He recorded it specially for them
I think the problem is the music press were truly awful back then. They had a lot of influence, and they would attack any band, pushing rumours that the band was break up, because How dare they have another singer!!!
"Victoria Gardens" is a great song sung by Cathal, and was supposed to be the single after Michael Caine, but was shelved because they didn't want the press of breaking up. "One Better Day" was put out instead.
Gorgeous song can't stop listening!
A real classic!
It was the best song Madness ever recorded
They were such a great band with a artistic progression that was like the Beatles.
"Keep Moving" was a phenomenal album, and it seems they flamed out after this.
Madness were so good
Madness my name Michael Caine classic song from the eighties good song
Madness had great hits and none are bad at all. This happens to be favourite song by them. Just love this to bits. Just a shame it’s not as popular as the others. Doesn’t get the credit it deserves 🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
The best song for ever!!!!!!!!
Ahh loved this since then. if not the best ska band ever, most certainly the most creative. great vocal keys and sax
I think this is my favourite madness tune
My namesake Cathal does a great job on this, revealing an unusually good voice.
I'm Michael Caine Que grandes los Madness!!!!! Canciones que perduran en el tiempo!
Life won’t be the same without the 80’s
A writer said recently that the further away we are from the eighties the closer it seems such has its impact been. Very true.
The entire Keep Moving was a real departure from albums like One Step Beyond. I read about it. and since 1984, I’ve had the cassette and the CD.
I used to have the 45 of this back in the day...... and I would just play it over and over and over.... I still love listening to this song.... except now I just listen on my phone . And sometimes I will listen to it over and over again too.....
Nice tip-of-the-hat to 'The Ipcress File!'
I thought it was ! I love that film :-)
Amazing band. Love em
Used to skive skool at me mates, we would cook chips in the pan fryer for our lunch and listen to madness all day. Fantastic!
Bloody hell underrated song right here
the first single i ever bought, i was 11 years old and always remember the lady behind the counter telling me it was a cracking, played the tune to death, loved the melancholy in this song
An under appreciated masterpiece! 35 years later it still has it. Folk were used to their Nutty sound I think this, Sun & the Rain etc were overlooked
Steve Wright played this yesterday. Never heard it before but it is now stuck in my head!
Greatest live band ever, imho!
My all time favourite madness song, i love it ❤
