    Lyrics
    I've nothing much to offer
    There's nothing much to take
    I'm an absolute beginner
    And I'm absolutely sane
    As long as we're together
The rest can go to hell
    I absolutely love you
    But we're absolute beginners
    With eyes completely open
    But nervous all the same
    If our love song
    Could fly over mountains
    Could laugh at the ocean
    Just like the films
    There's no reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
    It's absolutely true
    Nothing much could happen
    Nothing we can't shake
    Oh we're absolute beginners
    With nothing much at stake
As long as you're still smiling
    There's nothing more I need
    I absolutely love you
    But we're absolute beginners
But if my love is your love
    We're certain to succeed
    If our love song
    Could fly over mountains
    Sail over heartaches
    Just like the films
    If there's reason
To feel all the hard times
To lay down the hard lines
    It's absolutely true
    About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

I was the cinematographer on this video, as well as the film Absolute Beginners. Julien Temple, whom I met at the National Film and Television school directed the video and the film. It was a hectic time for us & I remain forever grateful to Julien for trusting his film school friend to shoot with him for more than 10 years. This is one of my favourite pieces of work - one of the rare opportunities I got to shoot black and white which I absolutely love: we went on to make "Jazzin for Blue Jean" with David who was the one of the greatest musicians and human beings I ever met back in those heady 80's days. Nice to see it immortalised on uTube with a decent copy of the original..

Back in 1985 I was staying in a youth hostel in London near where the cafe that is used starting at 3:16 of the video. I just happened to go out for a night walk and saw some bright lights near the cafe and David Bowie and the Zebra lady were working on the video. Between takes he came over to a few of us and talked for a few minutes. He was a very cool guy. When the director called him over he said "Sorry guys, I've got to go". He gave me a couple of autographs. I have old slide photos somewhere that I took while the video was being made. It was a very cool experience and now a nice memory.

Great music indeed, but everyone feels the music of their childhood is the best music of all time. Likewise I had my childhood in 70s and 80s, a golden era, and yet I see the world move on and regret all that I will not be around to see and experience. I came of age in my 40s and 50s, and haven't had nearly enough of life yet, and probably never will.

Oh, absolutely. There's a whole generation who were introduced to Bowie in the 80s, but the decade was actually the most creatively stagnant part of his career (That's not meant as an insult. I've long said Bowie at his worst is still better than the rest at their best.) But between the drugs and making songs for an audience he couldn't really read, his creativity kind of atrophied. And when the 90s came, he either would have died or retired. But fortunately for him (and us) he met Iman. He got clean for her, and she encouraged him to experiment again, which led to a career renaissance. I think it's kinda funny how he cried when he wrote this, because it was almost kind of a prophecy about Iman. Imagine pouring you heart and soul into a love song about someone you think doesn't exist... and then meeting them.

To me david bowie is still with us. His humorous interviews his beautiful songs his vocabulary phenomenal. He has so many interests. Movies sculpting painting songwriting writing books. How much more talented can one human being be. He connected with his audience and on stage he made you feel like he was singing to you. When talks about Iman and his baby girl he lights up like Broadway. What a horrible illness to die from.
He is the only person I know that can smoke a cigarette and make it so sexy. Class act all the way. I hope to see you in the next life david

David Bowie was the most amazing individual, he had help, friends, family, and support, but he has to be the most creative musical individual that has ever walked the earth in recorded times. Name someone that comes close, someone that forged a path, so many styles, and right to the end creative and class. He even choreographed his end. This word is branded about but can be used in reference to David - "genius".

Most people probably never heard this song as I rarely heard it on the radio. I never saw the movie but this song was always a favorite of mine & also had the soundtrack so played it so much. Another favorite of mine was Modern Love. I was born in 1965 so I remember his earlier music which I didn't like much but only a few songs. I had 2 sisters that were 7 and the other 8 years older than me so heard david bowies 1970's stuff.

I was lucky - I remember in 1986 when my parents were having the house renovated, the radio station the builders listened to would thrash this song (as well as "Don't Get Me Wrong", another brilliant song IMO). Needless to say it's incredibly nostalgic for me. Never saw the film either. It's paradoxical that a song about being an absolute beginner should be so accomplished and weave in so many musical threads!

Just read how Bowie’s existence let a young David Gahan realize he wasn’t an outsider. There is a place for all of us. So glad you’ve uploaded this - another glimpse of the cool, kind, of his generation yet oh so unique Bowie. My son needs this gentle soul now.
    Thank you.

This is the full-length version, which is over 7 minutes long. The original single version was over 5 minutes long. How to rate this song that I heard for the first time in 1986... David Bowie was an exceptionally talented artist. He was also an agreeable person. And, he got along well with a band named Queen. "Under Pressure" was the product that was born from the Queen-Bowie collaboration. As for Bowie's "Absolute Beginners", I give it 10/10. A masterpiece. Thank you.

    I absolutely Love you David
    & that's a fact
Bowie sneaked into that special chamber in my heart where music lives when I was 8, and there he has comfortably reigned ever since. No other artist, no other musician, no other music, no other voice makes me feel these wonderful emotions.
I do like a lot of different music; David is special. I sometimes think he and his music might just have kept me alive..
He is my soul artist, and his music is my soul music.
    Thank you for all, David

But personally instead of musically. I love his music and everything, but mine is personally. I mean musically and actor wise too, but mostly personally because he was a regular person and didn't act otherwise. He acted the way you're supposed to and I think he was just wonderful.

Great song, beautifully arranged and mixed with loads of attention to detail. The producers Langer and Winstanley no doubt made a great contribution to that because it was their forte at the time.
