I was the cinematographer on this video, as well as the film Absolute Beginners. Julien Temple, whom I met at the National Film and Television school directed the video and the film. It was a hectic time for us & I remain forever grateful to Julien for trusting his film school friend to shoot with him for more than 10 years. This is one of my favourite pieces of work - one of the rare opportunities I got to shoot black and white which I absolutely love: we went on to make "Jazzin for Blue Jean" with David who was the one of the greatest musicians and human beings I ever met back in those heady 80's days. Nice to see it immortalised on uTube with a decent copy of the original..

Great music indeed, but everyone feels the music of their childhood is the best music of all time. Likewise I had my childhood in 70s and 80s, a golden era, and yet I see the world move on and regret all that I will not be around to see and experience. I came of age in my 40s and 50s, and haven't had nearly enough of life yet, and probably never will.
I was the 23 year old American singer walking about London when this came out having been escorted across the English Channel by an Absolutely Gorgeous boy named Paddy Bowes as I left France for England. We shared a once in a lifetime toast of a Bitter Lime. I love you to this day Paddy Bowes.. Tod.... a doll from New Zealand you were and are...Always and forever.
If you never felt like anyone really understands you. If you feel like you're on the outside, looking in. If you feel like you need to assert yourself, to justify your actions. If you think instead of talk. If you want and need but you don't get it. Bowie is yours.

Oh, absolutely. There's a whole generation who were introduced to Bowie in the 80s, but the decade was actually the most creatively stagnant part of his career (That's not meant as an insult. I've long said Bowie at his worst is still better than the rest at their best.) But between the drugs and making songs for an audience he couldn't really read, his creativity kind of atrophied. And when the 90s came, he either would have died or retired. But fortunately for him (and us) he met Iman. He got clean for her, and she encouraged him to experiment again, which led to a career renaissance. I think it's kinda funny how he cried when he wrote this, because it was almost kind of a prophecy about Iman. Imagine pouring you heart and soul into a love song about someone you think doesn't exist... and then meeting them.

What a celebration of music this is. The guitar, the drums, sax, vocals, the whole thing. What a creative mind David had. Rest in Peace David, and thank you for the great, timeless music.
@@darkopodbevsek4022I believe he said this song, he put a lot of time and effort into it. When I first heard, it was like an addiction for me. Just blew me away. He had so many hits, this was different but simply amazing.
God do I ever miss him. I'm in my late 60's now. Seen him many times live, have over 40 of his LP's and have been a huge fan since 71. Every new record I was there at the record store (young ones miss that, flipping through thousands of vinyl records while others played over the speakers in the store, something that should have gone away) the day the new one came out right up to "Black Star". Thank you David for making a part of my life so wonderful. I hope the angels soar over your heart and comfort you now.
If you grew up in the 80's, most of the music seemed to blend together and you didn't realize how good some songs were (like this one) until looking back...
I lost my wife 3.5 years ago & every time I hear this song, especially the sax solo at the end it brings me back to much happier days with her. Thank you for the gift, David.
I started to listen Bowie when I was in hospital, one motnh after I woke up from koma. Waiting for other operations. He gived me such energy to live and energy to recovery. I moved much as I could listening his songs.
Though I was vaguely familiar with my Dad's copies of Ziggy and Aladdin I first properly discovered Bowie when I was hospitalized as a teen. I was bed ridden and my sister brought me her walkman and a selection of mine and her tapes. Among them was her copy of ChangesBowie and on first playing I fell in love with nearly ever song, especially John I'm Only Dancing, Young Americans, Fashion and Blue Jean. He's been a favourite ever since.
Last summer, he gived me also energy in my live. I felt like I was in a labyrinth last year. One night I saw his labyrinth movie and fell in love. His soul is old and he lived very consciously. He always fought with this world and found his way. Sometimes I feel his spirit next to me!
His music, his voice and his charisma are transcendent. I wouldn't be surprised if he is known on the other side of our galaxy. His genius did not know bounds. I miss him dearly.
I agree. This song shows the range he has and he is by far the best ever. His attitude toward life his family and how kind he is and fair. Treats his band like family. Wish more people were like him. He overcame many obstacles ans is absolutely brilliant
To me david bowie is still with us. His humorous interviews his beautiful songs his vocabulary phenomenal. He has so many interests. Movies sculpting painting songwriting writing books. How much more talented can one human being be. He connected with his audience and on stage he made you feel like he was singing to you. When talks about Iman and his baby girl he lights up like Broadway. What a horrible illness to die from. He is the only person I know that can smoke a cigarette and make it so sexy. Class act all the way. I hope to see you in the next life david
Bowies music has been a big part of helping me recover memories I’ve repressed or lost from my concussion. I hear one of the songs I used to use to cope and suddenly I can remember everything. His music is amazing and has always been there for me in my life. RIP to the man who sold the world and bought our hearts with the cash.

As a kid, I've cried when I've heard this song for the first time. I'll never forget that feeling, inexpiable outburst of emotions with goosebumps and tears... when I actually felt the powerful magic and impact of music, enchanted by this melody, like it was spoken in universal language - although I didn't understand a single word...
I was 20 when the song came up. Just finished army, having the life in front of me. Today, after 34 years, yes, I’ve got tears in my eyes, I guess because I’m still an absolute beginner.
Just read how Bowie’s existence let a young David Gahan realize he wasn’t an outsider. There is a place for all of us. So glad you’ve uploaded this - another glimpse of the cool, kind, of his generation yet oh so unique Bowie. My son needs this gentle soul now. Thank you.
This masterpiece makes me feel absolutely sure that all we need is to explore the present moment. A relationship is built hour by hour and needs every second of harmony. 🌈
I lost my virginity whist listening to this very song, when it was originally released, at a very young age. In 2021, I believe the words to be much more important and relevant today. It was, and still is my favourite song of all time. Each decade, I just get more and more from it. David Bowie was light years ahead of anyone at the time. 😊

With nothing much at stake
As long as you're still smiling
There's nothing more I need
I absolutely love you
But we're absolute beginners
But if my love is your love
We're certain to succeed
Bravo Juan! Gracias !
Oh thank you. What great words
As long as we are together theres nothing else i need
As long as your still smiling theres nothing else i need.
I love this song.
David Bowie Is A British Treasure .
Love his music 🎶, his vibe, and his presentation. 👏👏👏🎵
the piano, the choirs, his voice, the dancers, everything is perfect, this will be heard forever.
Ho 66 anni e mi manca tantissimo la musica di David ❤
What a celebration of music this is. The guitar, the drums, sax, vocals, the whole thing. What a creative mind David had. Rest in Peace David, and thank you for the great, timeless music.

@@darkopodbevsek4022I believe he said this song, he put a lot of time and effort into it. When I first heard, it was like an addiction for me. Just blew me away. He had so many hits, this was different but simply amazing.
Amen. Thank you David Bowie, you will long be missed...

Maybe the best one.
Nah, As the world falls down by David Bowie
Under Pressure from David Bowie and Queen
No, its I wanna hold your hand
God do I ever miss him. I'm in my late 60's now. Seen him many times live, have over 40 of his LP's and have been a huge fan since 71. Every new record I was there at the record store (young ones miss that, flipping through thousands of vinyl records while others played over the speakers in the store, something that should have gone away) the day the new one came out right up to "Black Star". Thank you David for making a part of my life so wonderful. I hope the angels soar over your heart and comfort you now.
A man has two deaths, his actual death and the second death is when his name stops being mentioned. Bowie will only have one death.
I agree. He is the greatest artist of our time. Timeless.
He is as popular than ever now btw
barely anyone i reckon
Truth
He’s FOREVER in my 1 life...
I loved the Film and this is my favourite Bowie track ❤❤❤❤ still listening 2024😊
I don't know how to explain what I feel when I hear this song, it's a mix of feelings... My eyes get entangled with a smile on my face
Bowie will always be a legend.

I don't know why but this song ALWAYS makes me cry...
I miss him so much... We love you Starman ❤

I was 18 at the time. Thought this song was magical never thought it got its true recognition.
Dawid Bowie’s Masterpiece
Totally agree ❤ love Bowie!
…surely ANOTHER of Bowie’s masterpieces!!👌👍👍👍
✨🔆✨👍
Yes there’s plenty of David Bowie masterpieces! This one just takes me back to my youth more.
If you grew up in the 80's, most of the music seemed to blend together and you didn't realize how good some songs were (like this one) until looking back...
True
The coolest love song ever. Evokes so many memories...⚘️
😢❤ saudades desse tempo Que música maravilhosa David Bowie vc deixou saudades.lindas musicas
This song is absolute perfection!
Love this song one of David Bowie's best imo, I remember listening to it as a kid it blew me away and many years later it still does.
Really great song
RIP dear Matthew Seligman, the bassist on this song.
The drums are stunning ...🌹🌹🌹
Bassist, great.❤😂😢❤
One of the Soft Boys…legend (also played with Thomas Dolby supporting Bowie at Live Aid)
This is such a bangin' song. Great vocals, keyboards, saxophone, everything about it is fantastic to me.
Me too! Ilove this song! I listen often!
Line bass it’s from another world
Totally agree, I couldn't have said it any better.
I lost my wife 3.5 years ago & every time I hear this song, especially the sax solo at the end it brings me back to much happier days with her. Thank you for the gift, David.
…absolutely beautiful comment 🙏🙏🙏
🙏🙏💯💯
Always the best to both of you 🍀🍀🍀☀
Last summer, he gived me also energy in my live. I felt like I was in a labyrinth last year. One night I saw his labyrinth movie and fell in love. His soul is old and he lived very consciously. He always fought with this world and found his way. Sometimes I feel his spirit next to me!
his songs are beautifull and very meeningfull 💜
Hope you are doing well now. I wish you all the best. Take great care of yourself.
Undoubtedly the greatest track of the 1980s by any artist.
At a time when Bowie was in a deep rut of writer's block, he surprised everyone with this. Flippin' great.
Not many things make me proud to be British but our music legends like the genius Bowie do. This isn't played anywhere near enough.
I play it at least a couple of times every day. I'm 55 and was 17 when this was released. I've never tired of it.
Not much makes me proud to be a human...Bowie does. From U.S., Earth.
@@Linelle-jq2ol I'm sorry if my patriotism offended you.Must be a problem in US.
I'm Australian and I have been enthralled by the music from England my whole life.
I love this man. Pure art. He's still alive. Have a nice journey David. You are eternal now.
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them 😥☺
I think he is having a joke about 80ts music

Truly a masterpeace. Love you David Bowie.
March 1986 late and great BOWIE with classic "Absolute beginners" ..... gutted when the great one died DAVID gone but not forgotten 👃➕.
Bowie at his finest!
Thank you David you touched millions around the world with your wonderful music. We can never repay you for what you've given us. RIP David Bowie.
His music, his voice and his charisma are transcendent. I wouldn't be surprised if he is known on the other side of our galaxy. His genius did not know bounds. I miss him dearly.
One of the BEST songs of all time.
This has to be one of the greatest songs of all time - Genius
I have an emotional connection with this song and I think that's what matters. The Songwriter has done his job.
He wrote this for you,you are so modest,:-)
My best friend Dean. We were about 18 and 19 and we went to the pictures in Manchester to see this film. WE WERE ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS.
Cool
I agree. This song shows the range he has and he is by far the best ever. His attitude toward life his family and how kind he is and fair. Treats his band like family. Wish more people were like him. He overcame many obstacles ans is absolutely brilliant
Well said Sandra I totally agree 😊
My too
Couldn't put It better myself. Every word so true fantastic human being. 👏
Concordo e essa música é uma das melhores q eu já vi

Bowies music has been a big part of helping me recover memories I’ve repressed or lost from my concussion. I hear one of the songs I used to use to cope and suddenly I can remember everything. His music is amazing and has always been there for me in my life. RIP to the man who sold the world and bought our hearts with the cash.

I never ever cry, but every single time I listen to this song, well... it's the waterworks. And I just don't know why. I love this song. So very much.
I do too. There's something so beautifully melancholy about the melody; it gets me right in the heart every time.
Makes me sad also when I hear his music knowing he's no longer with us, it's the same with Donna Summer. 💖💖💖💖
Utterly romantic, dramatic plus pure elegance renders this timeless masterpiece.

That’s a measure of a great song
Fantastic song.. fantastic man..we still miss you David....
Who would say those comments
David Bowie was a genius, with all his compositions, he sought maximum perfection, a myth, an idol.

As a kid, I've cried when I've heard this song for the first time. I'll never forget that feeling, inexpiable outburst of emotions with goosebumps and tears... when I actually felt the powerful magic and impact of music, enchanted by this melody, like it was spoken in universal language - although I didn't understand a single word...
same here. after twenty sth years still have tears, can't understand where from
thanks!
I was 20 when the song came up. Just finished army, having the life in front of me. Today, after 34 years, yes, I’ve got tears in my eyes, I guess because I’m still an absolute beginner.

Well said dude! I feel the same way too.
I've nothing much to offer.
There's nothing much to take.
True love to this 2 lines.

The GREATEST OF ALL TIMESS...!!!...
I lost my virginity whist listening to this very song, when it was originally released, at a very young age. In 2021, I believe the words to be much more important and relevant today. It was, and still is my favourite song of all time. Each decade, I just get more and more from it. David Bowie was light years ahead of anyone at the time. 😊
