Madness have never been shy about dressing up and the video for their masterful 1979 ska anthem 'Night Boat To Cairo' depicts them as pith-helmeted explorers, if only for a day in the studio. The song reached # 2 in the UK chart back in 1979 and the band still close their live shows with it to this day. Lee Thompson's saxophone takes center stage here, but for those who wish to follow the lyrics, helpful subtitles are included, complete with bouncing marker.
Lyrics:
It's just gone noon half past monsoon
On the banks of the river Nile
Here comes the boat only half-afloat
Oarsman grins a toothless smile
Only just one more to this desolate shore
Last boat along the river Nile
Doesn't seem to care, no more wind in his hair
As he reaches his last half mile
The oar snaps in his hand before he reaches dry land
But the sound doesn't deafen his smile
Just pokes at wet sand with an oar in his hand
Floats off down the river Nile
Floats off down the river Nile
All aboard, night boat to Cairo
Night boat to Cairo

Love how the cameraman is dancing with them.
Is that what they’re doing? I thought they were all having seizures.
The shaky cam was probably because the cameraman was likely as drunk as the band lmao
I think it's meant to be a boat (hence the title)
What do you do for a living. I'm cameraman for madness. Brilliant job or what 😂
they filmed all their own videos so i’m assuming he’s one of their mates or something haha
I love the fact that they just used a photo of the pyramids and mostly used handheld cameras for filming. You can see the studio floor beneath the sand at many points. It all makes this look so shittily made and that’s why I love it.
The flickering matte lines in the chromakey just add to it.

LOL! Look up green screen mate; number 1 rule: don't wear green when appearing in front of it (same is true of blue screen and blue)!
