Time for my tri-annual rewatch of this amazing video. I played MK9 briefly as a teen where I rented it from Blockbuster, beat the story mode and returned it after trying to play the awful online. Fast forward to about a year ago and I picked the game up for my Vita on a whim and fell in love. I bought the PC version and play with some folks via Discord servers from time to time and I absolutely can't get enough. It just feels oh so good and MK9 Sub-Zero's ice clone makes him one of my all time favorite fighting game characters to play. I'd kill for a remaster with rollback netcode and ideally a balance patch. I wouldn't want them to nerf the top tiers or anything but I would love for them to take everyone outside of the top 10 and give them some tools/bugfixes to help them compete a bit better at higher levels. As someone who grew up near Galloping Ghost it was a shame I wasn't aware of the local scene because I probably would have fallen in love with the game back in high school, but better late than never I guess lol
I found MK9 to be far more fun to play than MKX due to its meta doing a lot more than super heavily emphasizing rushdown and mindless mixing/oki like MKX did. I find that stuff when taking to the extreme like MKX does produces a really annoying game experience for me. The abundance of armor didn't help either. Also, neutral, footsies, and reliable AAs isn't a bad thing you know, it made MK9 neutral far more diverse than MKX. And i'm not saying I want MK11 to be a rehash of MK9 or anything, but I hope it inherits the game philosophy behind MK9 design rather than MKX.
Detectives K&M figure out a 7-year old mystery through thrilling investigative journalism and research! Great video, really captures what MK9 was and meant and puts the NRS titles that came after into perspective. There is nobody better suited to make these than you two.
Great video so far! I didn't play fighting games for 10 years between 2006-2016 while I went to college, got married, had a child. Playing in the arcades prior to that was a blast and I'm happy to see how fighting games have progressed since then.
irina1296 For me it's the reverse. MKX clearly had far better writing in the story compared to MK9, which was both just a lazy (and somehow inferior) remake of the first three titles, with several instances where the writers clearly had no idea what they were doing. Once Rayden's defenders were finally together in a room, the writers couldn't think of anything for them to do, so they just had Sindel kill them all off as a lazy means to get us to the result of the beginning of the game without having to actually give each character a proper death or having to think up something new for each character to do while Rayden and Liu Kang left to plead the Elder Gods. Additionally, you have Shaw Khan treated like an incompetent buffoon who gets his ass handed to him twice (three times if you count Tsung's defeat in the MK1 portion) and constantly resorts to cheating; Raiden is treated like a powerless madman who does nothing but beg other people, including Quan Chi for help, and ultimately, nothing the player does actually wins the day. The way to beating Khan was actually by letting him win. Not only is this anti-climactic and not a fulfilling way to beat the boss at all, but it also implies Khan is stupid enough to intentionally do an action that would lead to his own demise. Even the voice acting is quite mediocre. MKX had an original storyline, which automatically makes it better. It had a really cool dynamic with the Outworld Civil War and characters like Kotal Khan and D'vorah whom, while you could never fully trust, were still temporary allies. Rather than making Outworld always the bad guys, this was a mature and intriguing direction to take the franchise in. Showing us characters' development through backflashes was another new concept that worked rather well. Apart from Shinnok being taken down a bit too easily and a rushed romance between Jacqui and Takeda, I found the story overall to be very good. I also really liked the quick time events in cutscenes, which are often handled poorly but in this case were a benefit to the story. When it comes to gameplay, both games are broken messes, but I find MK9 to be more tolerable. At least MK9's expert ladder in arcade mode is feasible and enemy attacks don't feel cheap. MKX's idea of a higher difficulty is making the ai impossible to beat without exploiting the juggling mechanics, and that's just frustrating to push through. Multiplayer in MKX is an absolute nightmare and not worth your time whatsoever. I can't speak for MK9 multiplayer as by the time I played that nobody was in the servers.
The disgusting thing is that Mustard's net restand setup after the 1 bar variant will still kill if the command grab hits after net restand. DISGUSTING character.

2:03 I think this is why MK9 had my favourite roster! It felt so full ! MKX and MK11 always felt like they were missing a part of the cast. MK9 felt like a full roster, complete with everybody you would want!
the only terrible thing about MKX and MK11 roster is the same problem with Netherrealm in general now. They focus far too much on guest characters...Stupid characters like Rambo, Robocop, Jason, alien shouldn't be taking up slots in a game when your game has something like 80 characters possible.

Mk vs dc could have been really good, but the way they had to scale back the violence because of dc's inclusion was disappointing to me. No true fatalities, the fighting system was pretty dodgy too. It's cool to see sub zero square off against batman though lol
Thank you! Picking up MKX after being away from the franchise since MK4 and Deadly Alliance (which i loved).. and missing out on MK9, i found myself very lost with the new mechanics and more niche tech the game had gained. This kept me in the 'casual' brackets of play because i didn't know enough to improve my game. The more competitive matches i watched and learned the lingo definitely helped me understand the game more, but, video's like this open my eyes to things i never knew (like Dash-blocking/cancels). Great vid, keep it up.. MK11 hype is real
Sorta ironic how Sektor, the guy who was all for the Cyber Initiative was better as a human in competitive play, while Cyrax, one who was against said cyber-ization ended up being better as a cyborg.
This game was my introduction to the tournament scene and changed my life for the better. It was great to see some of the history again. Thanks so much for this video.
this is awesome to see as someone who plays mkx at a competitive level and mk9 at a very bad casual level. I wish i went into the meta lore when it was happening but this is a very close second! thank you!
For younger people like me, these are OUTSTANDING videos about metas and communities, and I'm not even a MK player, I just love fighting games in general, and the knowledge you share to me with this series is what I need
Check out the UMK3 video if you haven't already! I love making these, but there's so much info in them that they take a while. Stay tuned for episode 3 :)
What a fun video. I myself came in the competitive scene with MKX and actually through you, Mr.Ketchup. Nowadays, I compete in NRS, Tekken, Street Fighter, and i'm working harder to learn anime fighters, primarily Arksys. Definitely been a ride thus far. Only wish I got in this a little quicker. Was 13 when MK9 came out, but sadly I never got a newer gen console until 2 years before release of Xbone and PS4. I may not be a part of the deep history, but I sure do cherish what it and all it's players/community members have done.
Amazing work. Mortal Kombat 1 was the game that introduced me to the fighting game genre and the Mortal Kombat franchise in particular, but I also started playing fighting games on a more serious level with Mortal Kombat 9. It was an excellent game for sure, just like Mortal Kombat X is and the whole series. Can't wait for your next MK Meta video, keep up the awesome work :)
You can really see the inexperience from NRS in this look back. Lack of frame data in game and in guides, animation differences on Cyrax and Sektor costumes changing their gameplay, lack of high/low mix-ups, universal jump in buttons and of course Kenshi in general. Nothing against the game however, I had a lot of fun with it but it's interesting to see the lack of experience from NRS and how they changed going forward with MKX. Makes me more excited for MK11.
This is the game that got me into fighting games after MK9 I branched out to other games like Street Fighter and later on to Marvel, king of fighters, tekken, and other fighting games. MK9 got me hooked into fighting. Brings back memories when I was around 14 ish playing with my friends either online or locally.

Never played MK competitively. But MK9 is my favorite in the series because I like the story, I like the roster and I absolutely love that every characters feels like he has came from original MK trilogy. Which I'm a big fan of. I remember spending hours with friends playing MK2, MK3 and UMK3 on MegaDrive after school. We loved the games, we loved the movies (even Annihilation, lol) and MK 9 is like having both at the same time xD This is also, the reason why I never actually played MK X and 11 - it just doesn't feel right. not like "my mortal kombat". Characters are "wrong", gameplay feels stiff and different and the roster is just alien to me.
I’m a casual player getting ready for MK11, and just watched the MK Meta-MK 9 video for meta and lore purposes. Loved it! Really well done!! I’m looking forward to more of your content revolving around MK11! Cheers!
Hahaha that music at the beginning gave me chills! I'm 20 years old but in 2011 when I first started playing Mortal Kombat 9 I has just turned 13, before MK9 I played Shaolin Monks, armageddon and deception, this video has given me so much nostalgia! Can't wait for MK11
I follow your channel and I didn't realize you released this video! oh boy the nostalgia!! I've always loved MK and I remember seeing the 3d era as not that good and then with MK vs DC I was like "Man, MK is so dead that they had to mix it up with DC to keep it alive", hopes went up when a 2d MK fighter that will reboot the series was announced, I gave it a try and this was the first EVER fighting game I took serious, that I wanted to truly LEARN, beacuse it was so good, and then the NRS scene started to pop up, started following every one I saw in tournaments on twitter, and also I remember getting super hype when I found some of the ofline players online! (My first encounter was with foxy Grampa, you could imagine the hype). I also remember fighting against members of the FOREVER clan online on xbox360 (they were tough to beat, but one day I managed to beat FOREVER SWAGG's Johnny Cage with Cyrax, my best accomplishment online lol). THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! IT'S AMAZING, It would be amazing if you could do an MK9 most important tournaments history and hype moments in general (Like a continuation to this video). I will always love MK9. Thank you again for taking the time to do this FLAWLESS and OUTSTANDING video!
with mortal kombat 9 being my first MK game this was a fantastic video to give me a trip back through the game. i was never very good at this, but this was a phenomenal time
Loved the vid guys, you're awesome. I loved MK9 and the community so much. It was never perfect, but it will always be my favorite fighter. Awesome video as always! Idk if this is intended or not, but this kind of partial retrospective is a great way to get all of us prepared for Mortal Kombat 11! Great stuff, guys! And strange thing is, I reinstalled MK9 today and replayed it after a few years! This might be the best coincidence I've ever seen!!!!
the skill gap in this game changed the way I looked at videos games, I crave a competitive experience, I remember running into a group of people in KingOfTheHill and they showed me how to play reptile and Kung Lao, I’ll never forget finally beating one of them and feeling so achieved, one of the most unique online experiences.
This video made me appreciate a mortal kombat without the run mechanic. It’s hype to watch people navigate and play the neutral game. Can’t wait till MK11

You forgot to mention Pig Of The Hut, best Kenshi player !
Mk9 is love, Mk9 is life
28:12 Alright that transition was smooth
Ima say it, MK9 is the best MK and it easily has the best roster....
Can't wait for your next MK Meta video, keep up the awesome work :)
the memories man, the clan scene in mk9 was epic, MKU days, the rivalries, ty for this video ketchup, you inspired me to pick sektor back in the day
This was the first mk game i played. This video is the best mk video ever. So great.
I miss this game alot, it was so fun especially tag team.
These videos are still so epic to rewatch
You can really see the inexperience from NRS in this look back. Lack of frame data in game and in guides, animation differences on Cyrax and Sektor costumes changing their gameplay, lack of high/low mix-ups, universal jump in buttons and of course Kenshi in general. Nothing against the game however, I had a lot of fun with it but it's interesting to see the lack of experience from NRS and how they changed going forward with MKX. Makes me more excited for MK11.
Amazing trip down the memory lane thank you for the effort and can't wait to see more from the MK masters .cheers!
great video about the era before Sonic Fox powerhoused through every major MK tournament and blew all away :D
Excellent video dude, keep up the good work with this series, I'm lovin' it
This is the game that got me into fighting games after MK9 I branched out to other games like Street Fighter and later on to Marvel, king of fighters, tekken, and other fighting games. MK9 got me hooked into fighting. Brings back memories when I was around 14 ish playing with my friends either online or locally.
I watch this video like every month and it still astounds me like the 1st time I ever watched this I thought toasty was just some random thing that showed up every now and then I didnt know you could get a boost from it but mk9 was the time where I didnt know combos or anything like that and I thought the xray was the best thing in the game and would just button mash I love the vids man you made me main quan in mkx untill now I have basically mained him for the entirety of mkx I have watched all of you quan vids and mustards tremor stuff aswell as yours they were my 2 go to characters and I would just like to thank you for making my mk experience so much more fun and easier
This video was absolutely awesome. I love learning about the history of the competitive scenes of certain games. Thank you for making this!
Ty you guys were my first experience into mk9 and not gonna lie mustard was my favorite of you two to watch
also this was back in the day when i was in high school for sure XD
0:07 why did they use the MKVSDC model?
All I’m gonna say is:
Dash Blocking > Running
Wave dashing*
@@threat9231 it wasn’t called wavedashing back then in mk9. Probably because of the block state being active the whole time you’re block-dashing. You can also watch REO’s MK9 Reptile video about his movement. testyourmight.com/threads/stupid-question-how-do-you-dash-block.13330/
Last bit of this video is awesome. All the Pioneers of the scene.
This is what got me into competitive fighting games.
I mained Cyrax, Smoke, and Sub-Zero.
MK9 is literally a dream game. ALL the classic and popular MK characters with a decent fighting game engine.
I'm a Tekken player but I've always been a Motal Kobat fan. As an outsider of MK competitive scene I really love this kind of vids. Ty
Damn MK9 really has the best fatalities
Wow throwback to when Ketchup and Mustard looked extremely similar. Now adays I could tell them apart but back then idk
Thank god, I love this series. I’m relatively new to mk so it’s always fun trying to experience everything I missed.
This was an amazing nastolgia packed video. I had to go back and play MK9 immediately. Great job! April 23rd almost here.
this video is perect.i kept saying while i was watching it.. if only they talked about the matchups and there you go.. if only the talked about the commu..here you have..the lore... the best matche..ok this video is just perfect i just wish now that something like this could exist for other classic games.
We loved the games, we loved the movies (even Annihilation, lol) and MK 9 is like having both at the same time xD
This is also, the reason why I never actually played MK X and 11 - it just doesn't feel right. not like "my mortal kombat". Characters are "wrong", gameplay feels stiff and different and the roster is just alien to me.
Great video I rewatch it often.
I’m a casual player getting ready for MK11, and just watched the MK Meta-MK 9 video for meta and lore purposes. Loved it! Really well done!!
I’m looking forward to more of your content revolving around MK11! Cheers!
Absolutely legendary game. Great video, thanks & cheers!
Love the video! Favourite quote: "Cyrax could basically delete you in one touch." :D
This is a seriously great series and channel overall. Keep it up guys!
I miss mk9 heavily i hope they'll remaster this game some day 🙏🏾
I follow your channel and I didn't realize you released this video! oh boy the nostalgia!!
The game that got me into competitive fighting games! It always revived the MK franchise
with mortal kombat 9 being my first MK game this was a fantastic video to give me a trip back through the game. i was never very good at this, but this was a phenomenal time
"Also shoulder charge - f*ck that move." LOL! Excellent vid.
The Epic saga that was the MKX patches will be an Interesting video.
Loved the vid guys, you're awesome.
I loved MK9 and the community so much. It was never perfect, but it will always be my favorite fighter. Seeing all the little details of the game broken down and the tournament history was a rush of nostalgia. I'll always regret not going down to VSM since I lived so close to that scene and always wanted to play MK9 more seriously.
That body on millena .. gimme a way to keep her mouth shut and a paper bag. Game on.
I just found your UMK3 video a few days before this was posted and enjoyed that very much and was looking for more. Glad you're still making em.
I wish I'd gotten into the MK9 meta back when it was popular. I played it quite a bit, but never to that extent.
This brings back so many memories. You guys probably don't remember me, but I met you at Evo in 2012. I made it out of pools ended up like 30 something place? But anyway these videos are great guys keep up the awesome content!
Thanks so much for the hard work, I loved this video and can't wait for the others.
"You name it, they were playable"
Cyber smoke wasnt in it
So...
But regular smoke was, no bitching
We got Cyber Sub Zero instead
Goro, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn weren't playable either :/
Motoro
regular amoke cooler anyway tbh
Best modern MK game, I really doubt NRS will ever come close to matching it.
Crazy how this is still the best nrs games mk game to date and possible top three mk games of all times with Umk3/t and mk: Shaolin monks
Great video! I honestly don't think you missed a thing, and it's really well made. I miss this game so much. Can't wait for MK11.
Best mk game period.
the skill gap in this game changed the way I looked at videos games, I crave a competitive experience, I remember running into a group of people in KingOfTheHill and they showed me how to play reptile and Kung Lao, I’ll never forget finally beating one of them and feeling so achieved, one of the most unique online experiences.
This video made me appreciate a mortal kombat without the run mechanic. It’s hype to watch people navigate and play the neutral game. Can’t wait till MK11
I really like this series. getting you a big overview over the competitive life of a game all at once. I really enjoyed this, especially as someone who played a lot of MK9 back in its heyday.
I'd love to see you guys does this for the others NRS games or even expand to other fighting games later on. Great stuff!
Great work as always, you sir never disappoint
