The character select theme for DA was great. Shame the recent character themes are so forgettable.

Agreed, but technically that’s because recent games don’t actually have character select themes, as they play the same music throughout a seamless UI. The last NRS game that had a dedicated character select theme was Injustice 1. Maybe they’ll change it up for next gen projects.

I keep imagining characters in crane and crab stance and the like going "whoop whoop whoop" like Dr Zoidberg when they move around. Especially Shang Tsung when he sidesteps.
Not the first MK I ever played, but the first one I fully dove into as a tween. Honestly, thinking about it, this is really the first fighting game I ever REALLY learned to play. I mean, I'm no expert, far from it, I'm terrible at fighting games, but MKDA is a special game that introduced a whole generation of players to the characters and lore of MK... And Hsu Hao.
This was the first game I really learned how to do juggles in. Thank you Kenshi!
Same , this was the first MK game I played as a teen, I still remember my expression the first time I watched Lui Kang neck get snapped. Still gives me chills to this day

This was my absolute first Mortal Kombat that I actually played, I remember picking Sonya because I thought she was a long haired male character and getting laughed at by my older brothers, and covering my eyes and ears when fatalities were being done.
I’m 19 turning 20 now and this game came out when I was born😂 it’s what started my love for the franchise

My first MK this is the game that made me fall in love with Reptile (honestly love his design in this game and I'll die on this hill)
if there's one thing that new fighting games like VF and MK could take and improve from MKDA and MKD is the block animation, instead of the simple character standing with his arms raised in an awkward position, he could assume a defensive posture and have animations for different blocks. that would be fantastic!

Deadly Alliance will always be a favorite of mine. I didn't have many people to play with so the single-player content was huge to me. Loved it!

One interesting thing about the stages in DA is you can tell they clearly considered including ring outs as a mechanic based on how many of the stages have obvious ring out borders/potential death trap zones
In the past, I futilely mained Nitara among my circle of friends and it was not a fun time lol. I agree she's probably one of the more memorable new characters from MKDA. She has a nice design, attitude and was a refreshing take on the vampire archetype. She wasn't an evil vampire or a brooding misanthropic vampire, but a vampire sorceress just trying to free her world from Outworld's fused realm from a sense of duty (and a little manipulation).
considering that Armageddon and DA now have their MK Meta videos, I can't wait to see Deception someday :3

So the last 3D era game to cover is deception which a lot of people tend to say is the best of the 3D era. Man I want these 3D era games in a collection.
The little details made DA stand out for me. Maybe I’m blinded by nostalgia, but DA has always felt the most rich and atmospheric to me of them all.
Man, Scorpion in Pi Gua was an absolute monster, his standing 3.....
When they gave that style to Hotaru it was much weaker if I recall correctly
It was, specifically it was slower/less safe, but it was still decently strong. When playing hotaru, you're mostly gonna be in pi gua or his weapon. Both of which did cool things that unfortunately other stances in the game did better.
If only hotaru had better/more special moves... his lava burst was great, but his flying kick was basically useless except for when your lava burst lands a bit too far away for you to get a comfortable juggle going in your regular combos.

Lawd the movements were so funny back in the day haha, reptiles crab walk with his elbows, the way straight sword characters wiggle their blades as they walk, there is something hilarious about this game lol
I was a regular on MK5 .org when MKDA came out. MKL was an absolute troll there. Trash talking and insulting just about everyone. But at the same time he was a great help getting everyone up to snuff as far as tournaments. Helped everyone with match ups and general strategy. Nobody knew what to make of him until he started winning IRL. I remember him posting the Frost infinite. He officially discovered it BTW.
Was only a handful of high level players posting. Sonya was tough but eventually people started taking her down. Drahmin too. Anyways, was such a blast. Great game.
When I was a kid The maps and the alternate costumes on this game is something else to hype.. there a lot of times that i just literally make the match more long just to look around the entire map and terrains

@@shenelljohnson74 Tekken Zaibatsu was a competitive forum. It shutdown due to very little activity from competitive players in recent years. Most discussion tends to take place on Discord or similar platforms nowadays.
Deception is best but Deadly Alliance will have a special place in my heart.
I miss MK Metas…I hope another one comes out this year. Besides competitive history, this is my favorite series.

One of my favorite things about the 3D MKs was the movement. Sidestepping feels great, not too stiff like Tekken or too loose like SoulCalibur. It's a lot like Virtua Fighter's sidesteps, which i think are the best of 3D fighters

Deadly alliance felt like a completly different fighting game that just happened to have Mortal Kombat characters and elements. I love it
This is one of my favorite YT series, dudes. MK:DA will always have a special place with me. It came out JUST before I moved in 9th grade, and arguably kept me sane that winter at my new house. Hours locked in my room mastering moves, kombos, finishers, etc. Thank you for relighting that nostalgia from 20 years ago!

Jeez, I've never understood the whole Hsu Hao hate thing. Not only was he one of the most enjoyable characters to play in DA, but you could actually do some pretty solid stuff with him!
YES! I'm glad you guys did this one. I've always wondered about the meta for this particular 3D MK game. I loved it so much at the time of release.
I remember playing DA with Scorpion. He was busted with his unlockable fire setup. If you time it just as your opponent lands they'll restand and you can combo off the fire. Making scorpion a combo monster and unlockable setups.
Deadly Alliance created my favorite designs for Reptile and Kung Lao respectively (Kung Lao's of course being his alternate). Some people really hate Reptile's more animalistic designs, but I like them. Except MK4's.
Another very sick addition to the Meta series, and talk about how it gets better by each to another, keep up doing!
I remember playing this game a ton when i was in my teen years, tons of fun! Used to always max out the difficulty and see if i could beat it

Over the years, when people would ask why I love Deadly Alliance so much, I would mention many of the points made in this video. Thank you so much for making this very necessary meta. MKDA is still my 2nd favorite overall, but my absolute fav of the 3D era.
deadly alliance was my first mk game and I'll always love it, it made me a fan and since then I played all the games in the series

I LOVE THIS GAME.
I've played the earlier MK's before this, but MKDA was what got me fully interested into the MK Lore, dev lore, mechanics, just everything.
3D MK is such a fun looking set of games that I just don't know much about. It's so interesting to learn about the only era of games I didn't play.
This game is the soul of my childhood. Playing the game boy version and ps2 for hours. From doing fatalities on certain fighters for giggles. (I.e Cyrax fatality on Drahmin. (Flies around cyrax.) The soundtrack, the way the characters grunt. It is forever glued in my head.
This has to be my favorite video series on UA-cam. No joke I've watched these all several times.

Honestly from a nostalgia perspective this might be my favorite. I still remember being a kid and seeing all the extras and music video and it was the coolest.
My most favorite part of this game is the bonus called “Test Your Might”, the Diamond is the hardest one just like MK 1.
I've always called this game "Mortal Kombat 5" because of the bloodied metal thing in the box art looking like a Roman 5.

This is easily the one I'm most nostalgic for despite playing 2 and 3 before this was probably the first one I understood what was happening. Main memories being how sad I was that my favorite character Lui Kang being killed and discovering cooking with scorpion one night when I stayed up way too late and thinking I dreamt it

MK:DA is also one of the only MK games where the bosses were plain selectable characters rather than a cheesy overpowered super boss.
I was so hyped for this game, and will never forget how it immediately scarred me with Liu Kang. My first introduction to the protagonist being killed off.
man.. I remember getting my Dad's friend 's PS2 as a hand me down. Switching through each game he had. A relatively small selection. Only about 8 games or less.
Then I flipped to MK5 and I spent so many hours in the weird mystery of this game. It was so cool. Kind of hard to get good at while being in elementary school. But it was worth every second.
While I had played the og MK games back then I only seriously got deep into the series with Deadly Alliance, my first game that I personally owned instead of playing off a brother's copy. The tons of unlockables and ost really help keep me invested in keeping up with the further games, even MK vs DC, but overall this one holds a special place in my younger self.

The movement was much quicker in DA. They gradually slowed the combat down more and more throughout the 3D era titles. The combat felt best in DA.
4:50 I actually never noticed the blade emblem behind the logo is a V because it’s the fifth game.
DA was my first Mk. One of the first games I ever remember playing as a kid on the GameCube. I remember my younger sister going Li Mei and kept spamming 3. We'd laugh every time because I couldn't beat her when she did that XD. I remember listening to Immortal music video on repeat every time I played. Good times.

I remember buying this when it came out for the GameCube. I had just started college and definitely spent a lot more time trying to figure out all the stance combos then I did for the majority of my classes that's for sure. -- Don't slack on your studies kids, 😅😎

my friend got a ps2 and this game in the first day of school holidays, we beat it in one week, like unlocked all characters and stuff, was pretty fun at the time, great game
I played a lot of Deadly Alliance with friends on Xbox. It was one of my favorite MK games.
DA was my first MK game and i remember not really understanding or caring that "Liu Kang... Is dead" and basically only looking up the character bio of Reptile and otherwise just playing a lot of towers (almost never beating Moloch), chess kombat, and vs until Deception came out

i really did like Konquest mode. As a casual it let you learn characters you normally wouldn't. And you are 100% right when you say its a button heavy game! It was always so difficult trying to execute each characters super long combos
