I’m grateful for this information. I was tempted to buy one of these to see if it could be wired to use with my Xytronic LF-1000 temperature controlled soldering station, which only has a single SEVEN pin socket normally used for the soldering iron. But your explanation of the temperature sensor made me realise that it’s unlikely to be calibrated to my soldering station and so my temperature read would be wrong. These guns should only be used with a temperature controlled station that was made for them.
Great demonstration! Now I know what to look for if I have a problem.
Very useful! I did that for a device with 8-Pin aviation plug. For some reason the diode test to get the fan didn't work. I needed to open it anyway because ESD-GND was badly crimped.
1: Reed switch - / Thermocoupler -
2: Thermocoupler +
3: Reed switch +
4: ESD-GND
5: Fan -
6: Fan +
7 and 8: Heater (85 Ohm)

So I found out that the internal wiring arrangement is different.

How would you connect to the T12 5 pin connector? And to the board of a T12 solder station so you can swap soldering gun with hot air gun

My question is about the rest. Haw to connect these wires to the station's motherboard if there's no indication in it.
I know that 2 wires of the heater go to 220V and the rest?
The magnetic switch as i am thinking is only for auto start/stop and is placed in the base holder a strong magnet for this purpose.So it can be ommited.One question about thermocouple polarity has already aswered while watching your video.And the voltage of heating element is 220V or 110V so it needs attention when ordering.Thank you i am on the way for buying and testing.
Is it possible to find the voltage of the fan by the diode voltage?
Hello, very useful video, I bought a very similar handle and I have been able to identify all pins, I also dissasembled it to make sure. One question, the heater element measured 103 ohm, do you think it is meant to be used with 220 AC voltage? I plan to use a dimmer to control power and measure the temp just like you showed on the other video.

I got one of these from a friend that didn't realize it had a 24 volt fan in it and he burnt the fan up. I have a 12 volt fan I'm going to replace it with. The hot air gun has an 8 pin connector and I was needing to know how many volts the heating element uses. From your video I'm gathering it's 110-220 volts. Would I be safe in assuming that's correct? I've been wanting one of these and don't want to damage it anymore than he did. I know electricity and electronics very well, but couldn't find any other info on these hot air guns.
Does anyone know what size wire it is i know its 8 core but not sure on the thickness of the cable.

I don't know for sure but I think that 2 wires for a heating element, 2 wires for a thermocouple, 1 for ESD protection.
I've looked, but I'm having a hard time finding a 110V handle. Do you know of one that exists, or what would be my best option? Thanks!

The reed-switch is used for cool-down or turn off -mode when you put the handle into its holder, as I started to progarm my Arduino sketch I was very proud about my idea to turn off the heating element but let the fan run until it is cooled down to a not-dangerous temperature, but then I saw that almost all manufacturers use that method xD And yes, ESD is connected to metal chassis or where the third wire, the protection wire, in Germany they are green/yellow colored, from the 110/230V plug is connected to.

Затрудняюсь сказать. Но самый распространенный тип термопар это Type K (chromel-alumel) 41 µV/°C en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermocouple#Nickel-alloy_thermocouples В моем фене стоит Type K. Хотя возможно, что ваш прибор откалиброван на другой тип термопар. Тогда его нужно перекалибровать, если это возможно. Или держать перед глазами таблицу соответствия одних температур другим.

+Jurij Khomjachenko Чтобы собрать только фен с ручной регулировкой нужны: ручка фена с 8 проводами (как в этом видео), мультиметр, диммер и повышающий DC-DC преобразователь. Повышающий DC-DC преобразователь необходим, чтобы получить 24В, на которых достигается максимальная скорость вентилятора фена. +Jurij Khomjachenko Зависит от целей. Только для фена, то не думаю, что это хороший выбор. Нагревательный элемент в фене - нихромовая проволока. Это хорошо управляемая пассивная инерционная нагрузка, для которой особо не нужен замысловатый PID-регулятор. С другой стороны в устройстве по ссылке на выходе стоит реле. Надо разбираться, что это за реле и как оно управляется. Если это электромеханическое реле, то можно получить короткую жизнь нагревателя (когда коммутация попадает на максимум фазы), залипание или выгорание контактов реле, если там стоит zero-crossing драйвер, то эта проблема частично снимается.
+Jurij Khomjachenko Скорость вентилятора управляется величиной постоянного напряжения. (максимум скорости достигается на 24 В). Поэтому если есть БП от ноутбука, это, скажем, 19В, то желательно иметь возможность понижать напряжение, тем самым понижать скорость до приемлемой. Для этого можно, или собрать линейный регулятор,например, на lm317, или купить готовый понижающий DC-DC преобразователь (DC-DC Buck converter). Если есть какая-нибудь телефонная USB-зарядка 5V/1A, то нужно брать к ней повышающий DC-DC преобразователь (DC-DC boost converter), чтобы иметь возможность увеличивать скорость вентилятора до приемлемой.
+sergeikrasnikov про контроллер REX-C100 я читал, что он точно работает, и не ломается. Для меня точность +/- 30С которую выдаёт 878D очень критично, а REX-C100 выдаёт с точностью до градуса
