I believe that Z Broly doesn't dislike Goku but instead that Z Broly has PTSD from the things he experienced during his childhood. Goku's crying likely is one the things Broly likely remembers about his traumatic childhood. Thus, Goku triggers Broly's PTSD. This can be noted In Z broly's second movie when he awakens from the ice due to Goten's crying, which likely triggered his PTSD from his childhood.
Yeah if i'm not wrong he got stabbed as a baby didn't he that would already be pretty traumatic but then you also add all of the other things he went trough and u understand he had it bad
he may have had some sort of "combat social anxiety" as a trigger, and goku's constant energetic fighting spirit, regardless of his low power level, constantly annoyed a baby broly whose psyche tries to protect from his own power by trying to keep him calm. That kind of trait fits with his characterization through the whole movie imho
Bro I love that you included the “Is that another word for coffin?”. That was the first line I thought of when you were talking about him saying full sentences.
To me, Z Broly was the epidemy of what a sayain was supposed to be; an all-powerful, blood-hungry monster. The problem he had with Goku was that he wouldn't submit like sayains are supposed to. Goku was the only person who is willing to go up against the internal sayain hierarchy. That's why Vegeta who was who was gifted at birth, instantly gave up against the one who outclasses a prince
bro... paragus whent against the "saiyan hierarchy" he planned to kill king vegeta and his family... doesint get much less submisive than that... and your forgetting trunks gohan vegeta, picolo, fuckin matster roshi... they all oposesed both the saiyans in general and broly spicificly... the hell you talking about, youv invented your own fantasy of motives and claimed thats the cannon, bro we all have access to the story, its not hard to see where you put your own fan thoeries into the story. also saiyans are supposed to concor wolrds not eraze them... and even vegeta and radits go against this stated goal a number of times becuase the writers simply do not care for consistency of characterization just what works thematicly for the stakes of a fight.
@@josephquezada6138 they weren’t pure blooded to understand pride or tradition nor were they competition. Goku uniquely asserted his presence from day one unlike anyone else, which Broly was affected by and remembered. He remembered the competition. The narrative was just that Goku was remembered and stirred his competitive blood lust. His Kakarotism truly started the in 2nd movie.
Z Broly's character can be summed up in a single word: "Saiyan". As in, a "perfect" Saiyan, in their eyes at least. Immeasurable power, egotistical, nigh-indestructible, ruthless, no regard for his victims, and the spitting image of the legend of the Super Saiyan.
Yeah. He's basically the Saiyan messiah. His clothes almost resemble that of a holy figure or a prophet, he outright declares himself divine (IE "I am the devil!"). His transformations are overwealming and mindboggling, causing effects no other transformation before or since has carried. To top it off, his second movie (In the US at least) is called "The Second Coming", like Jesus. He embodies also the limitless potential of the Saiyan race: constantly growing in power, breaking any and all limits places ahead of them, until everyone and everything is destroyed.
He’s literally what all saiyans aspire to be, he’s ruthless, callous, and on top of all that limitless potential (literally his power never stops increasing hence why he’s “legendary”)
Another reason I think Broly is so great is he puts the grit back into super saiyan. Once everyone was able to go super saiyan, the transformation just felt standard. However, when broly goes LSSJ, he feels like an unstoppable force that manhandles all the other super saiyans. He puts fear into his transformation and its gold
people say super broly is a better charachter with better backstory . bruh super broly is a cute braindead gentle giant with the same backstory but watered down
Broly was also the only Super Saiyan that was actually evil and not inherently good or treated Super Saiyan like it made characters good, which the rest of the characters who can do it, make it seem. No. He was an evil Super Saiyan and a mutant.
It’s not often we get people actually dissecting Broly beyond kakkarot and crybaby shenanigans so this was definitely refreshing. Something I remember sticking with me was in an interview Z Brolys creator saying there was a lot of scrapped dialogue where he wanted to give broly more of a somber personality. Specifically his asking “What am i”
I didn't grew up with Dragonball or Z Broly, but "It's just a dream" scene alone is enough to make me love this guy. It's just so cartoonishly over the top evil it's amazing. We need more villains who absolutely revel in their villainny and have a time of their lives tormenting everyone around them.
The "its just a dream" could also be looked at like Broly venting a little. Homie's planet is gone, his race is gone, his people are gone, he and his dad were thrown out for reasons he still doesn't get, and he's had several years brooding under his father's bitterness to become a war machine. Soooo....I'd say the movie is Broly having a lil meltdown and breaking stuff, blowing off steam, and lashing out. Not exactly evil, just....complicated. It'd be like Vegeta being called evil, when he's just really a bitter orphan.
Let me clarify the significance of the crying scene, in Bardock the Father of Goku it was stated that an infant Goku had the cry of a great warrior. The first Broly movie expanded upon this concept where Broly, the natural lover of fighting he is, upon hearing Goku's cries, interpreted him to be a powerful fighter which awakened his desire to fight Goku specifically, as he perceived him to be a worthy foe- not out of an annoyance through the sound of crying. Later on in the movie Broly seeing Goku's face caused him to momentarily break free of his mind control without the sound of crying, so he just desires to fight a powerful opponent and it just so happens the the first time he recognized one occurred through someone's crying.
You know why that makes no sense? Broly never saw Goku’s face as an infant, nor did he ever hear his name. So the fact that he can remember things that he never learned in the first place is crazy. Not to mention that his face, voice, and name are ALL different now as an adult.
I, the second of the only two Z Broly fans in existence, felt incredibly seen by both this video as well as your assertion that you were alone in liking Z Broly. I didn't even need the deep analysis. Broly is just fucking AWESOME and I couldn't understand why people DIDN'T like the simple, havoc-wreaking, mayhem-dispensing charm of that Big Bad Boy.
Because the original dub team, per usual, fucked up the dialogue. Like mentioned in this video, Broly in the dub just knows who Goku is, without anyone mentioning his name around him, which leads people to believe he's capable of recalling a name some scientist said in the background while he was a baby, upset by Kakarot's cries. The fact that Broly is also seemingly aware of some connection between him and Goku, without there being anything explained behind it, like Saiyans being able to sense a future destined opponent or something, also leaves people confused in both sub and sub. I like Z Broly, but compared to every other character in the series, you have to put in a ton of headcanon around Broly to ignore the questions around the logic that Toei presents. I like the idea that Goku's presence brings back disjointed memories of the day he heard Kakarot's cries, King Vegeta stabbed him and Frieza destroyed the planet, and that's why he's stressing so hard before transforming in both fights. But even then, it's sort of stupid that Goku out of everything triggers that, and not Vegeta, in the likeness of his father, or any energy blast that causes decent destruction, vaguely reminiscent of Frieza's supernova.
While Z Broly doesn’t really touch villains in the actual show, he’s easily one of the coolest, most intimidating, and fun to watch villains in the old movies
Plus he has some pretty good lines in the dub "handicap?, is that another word for coffin" Broly goes so hard in the first movie, I wish they kept letting him make those one liners
I think Broly is the epitomy of "mindless fun", which I think alot of stuff is missing nowadays, he's not the best written character but he puts on a show that few villains (even in the main series) can beat.
@@Jay-LT_513 We're probably the same age and man the GTA series had a phenomenal run on the 2000s and I still call CJ a buster. Long story short, life was lit back then.
Hell yeah man. Legit good AMV too. Brought me back to the late 90's looking for DBZ AMVs just to see a little more for what wouldn't be aired in the US for years to come
@@A_Real_Bloody_Vampire His motivation wasn't a crying baby hell he's not even a complex character that's not the point and never was the point of his character Its because of the shit English dub and his other 2 movies that flanderized the hell out of his character is why people thinks his motivations is a crying baby not once was it ever explicitly stated his hatred results to a crying baby. If you don't like z broly sure but he had some character at least in movie 8 movie 10 and 11 it was just ruined beyond that point
I think the crying part is mostly symbolic. What triggers broly is goku fighting spirit as stated by the doctors in the movie. Remember that the very first scene goku meets broly he is triggered without even seeing his face and they show both goku and broly flaring their ki as to represent goku unwillingness to back down.
I always saw it as being Goku is just the trigger for all of his painful memories of his childhood trauma. Maybe Goku and his crying just triggers latent PTSD memories of being stabbed and left for dead as a baby, something no one should ever endure.
My interpretation is this: What upsets and unnerves Broly is that he knows he's powerful, yet finds himself unsure and without control. Goku on the other hand seems like an ant to Broly but Goku loves to fight, doesn't back down and is sure of himself. It'd be like if Vader met a rebel grunt who stood zero chance, but instead of running, instead of cowering in fear, instead of being one small bit intimidated, that rebel grunt was absolutely psyched to fist fight Vader. All of a sudden there's that fear that this is no ordinary grunt, this welp who should fold like paper might actually be able to hurt him, and that terrifies the hell out of Broly.
It's definitely either that or Its not the crying itself that broly hates its because its one of the things he remembers from his very traumatic childhood which gave him ptsd I feel like either on of these work
@@obiwanshinobi87Straight up lol. Vader does not take likely to fools acting tough in front of him. You’re either brave or your stupid, he’s going to MAKE you the latter.
Z Broly has totally control of his powers. and he likes to fight(he destroyed an entire galaxy), he only stops because his father was controlling him. Broly probably dislikes Goku because he was left to live yet they wanted him dead, and how they belittled him and compared him with Kakarot when they were babies.
This kinda vaguely reminds me of Xenoverse 2 (spoilers) At the part with Mira and the Masked Saiyan where Mira talks about how he is the perfect fighter but there's something about the Masked Saiyan he just can't replicate and he's kinda mad about it. A type of strength Mira can never access.
That AMV you played at the end I was searching a good 15 years for I can’t believe I just ran by it. Thank You so much. Z Broly was one of my favorites too. Misunderstood for sure.
I am grateful that you uploaded this because I love Z Broly AND Super Broly. This video just gave me a different perspective and further makes me appreciate Z Broly even more
I don't think I fully agree with the idea that Broly wasn't bothered by Goku's crying, but I agree with the idea that Broly somehow remembers Goku's presence. As a result, he gets really anxious in the movie as a result of it awakening some deep, deep nameless trauma within him (aka Goku's crying sleep depriving him as an infant) that he can't even remember the source of.
I don't think that is anxiety from trauma as much as broly railing against the mind control he is forced under by his father. He definitely wants to be free in every scene until he finally breaks the power limiters.
I feel it might have been a two edged sword situation, Broly had the overwhelming power and Goku had the power to perceive that power, like casting detect magic in a dragons horde.
I always did, and still do, LOVE the original DBZ Broly. His hatred of Goku wasn't anywhere near as stupid as people liked to think it was. Here's the thing. Broly was a freak, born with freakish power. God knows how much he was aware of as an infant, and given the fact that he escaped a planet AS IT WAS BLOWING UP, tells me that he was cognizant of a LOT more than any other child. Then there's the difference in how Goku and Broly were raised. Goku got to live a cushy, virtually carefree life, having fun adventures, while Broly was living on scraps, working as a mercenary, and being mind controlled by his own father. Gee, and people wonder why Broly turned out like he did. Broly was probably always told about his Sayan heritage by his father, and blah blah, blah, then gets betrayed by his father for being everything his old man wanted him to be.
The sequels are where the one word Broly came about, and the sequels sucked. Then again, the whole phrase "Going Rambo" came about because of the sequel to First Blood, not First Blood where Rambo killed all of ... one man, on accident, because Rambo threw a rock at a helicopter, and the idiot fell out. Yeah "Going Rambo" became a thing because of Rambo: First Blood Part 2. Are we seeing a pattern here? It seems like the sequels had more influence on perception than the originals did.
I love Broly’s character in the first movie and what he represents, he represents everything in Goku and Vegeta’s Saiyan nature that they move on from, Brody is the epitome of what a Saiyan is: powerful, sadistic, and alone. He’s a great contrast to the heroes and is fucking sick
I always thought Broly was just literally insane, like straight serial killer vibes. Paragus’s flashback shows us that Broly was violent and unstable. He’s chemically imbalanced and Paragus had to put a mind control device on him to avoid being the next victim. He’s a psychopath that rains terror much like King Vegeta predicted. I think Goku was a simply a trigger that made him snapp.
Yea. Never read too much into it, and I don' think anyone was meant to He's the "truest" saiyan, with all of their instincts and tendencies taken to the greatest extreme. And he's a raging, psychotic, murderous monster. There's something great about that narrative despite its simplicity
king vegeta ironically is the one who made him that way in trying to prevent his upbringing he likely would have been too much to handle anyways, but king vegeta only made the problem far worse
You unlocked a DEEP and REPRESSED core memory of mine with that AMV at the end. It was the first and only AMV I ever watched but rewatched it over and over again it was the single most coolest DBZ media to me as a kid thank you so much for digging that up I love you man.
Minor correction broly didn't destroy South Galaxy. He destroyed South Galaxies, a region of space made of multiple Galaxies. It's complicated because the kais and universe are never properly explained and it's got a poor translation
I decided to watch the movie again for myself and have my own theory for Broly's motivation. Seeing Broly in the first half of the movie makes me think that Paragus kept his son in constant state of apathy, blocking any emotions from growing to any troublesome degree. You have to think that Broly for the majority of his life with an exception to his younger days, probably had no control over his own life, following his father, feeling like he was in dark well watching the world go by with no interest or feelings of his own. I do think he knew that Kakarrot was the baby next to him before, but as a vague memory for him. What's interesting is that because any emotion's he felt were before the control band was put on him, those things that would remind him of them, could give him a small feeling that could break him from his waking slumber. For Goku, the crying was probably a discomforting feeling from those past memories that slowly would grow the longer Goku's face and voice would be to near him. Being in this apathetic state, this small feeling is actually freeing, even though it is a discomforting feeling, it is an actual feeling from himself. One could interpret him following Goku, is like a cry for help, but with punching and his own rage, so he could break himself slowly from his fathers control. I guess for whatever reason, Goku was a bigger trigger than Vegita's face, since king Vegita was the one who stabbed him (maybe if Vegita had a beard that would have helped). But none the less, that power burst and transformation into the legendary super saiyan was him finally breaking the chains and giving him full control of his own body. The jubilation of the man giving the most awesome beatdown to the dragon team ( none of that z fighters bullshit), was him stretching his legs and seeing what he could do. Killing his father must have been the most cathartic moment in his life. You probably right though that he doesn't hate Goku, but Goku is important for him to break out of his induced apathy state. It is convenient that you played Bring me to life from Evanescence, since that song works amazingly with this interpretation of his life. For the ending,I think the moment Broly knew he was going to die, he pieced together that Goku was that Boy who cried next to him was the same man, that set him free from his mental prison. An insignificant action that brought him discomfort in his youth was what saved him and now that same man is about to end his life. I don't want to discredit your interpretation, I mean, Dragon ball is no stranger to Battles of Destiny (Frieza and the Super Saiyan Goku), I just wanted to give my own idea. For Broly 2, I feel like they should have at least gave him a few lines outside of the name Kakarrot, but alas. I will just ignore Bio Broly.
@loxt2 my theory is only about why he had that reaction to Goku. His dad for the original movie was a piece of work, He was okay leaving his son to die when the comment hit. The fact Broly was uncontrollable didn't help, but still, damn.
I believe its Paragus meddling with his emotions, his outburst and lack of control of his power and the physical and mental abuse(Goku's crying not giving Broly peace and the only reminder he had of a time as a baby) amplified over time creating the power freak true fans know and love today.
Broly is a tragic character of sorts. He's a savant. Powerful yet unstable. He delights in death and destruction because that's what life presented to him.
Feel like the main thing Broly dislikes about Goku. Is Goku's unwillingness to be intimidated by Broly despite his overwhelming power. And this is shown perfectly with Vegeta. Vegeta similarly to Broly would rather fight someone weaker than themselves so they can feel greater about their power. The complete opposite of Goku who is always excited to fight stronger opponents This goes back to alot of the beliefs Saiyan's had. How Vegeta constantly boasted to Goku about being a high class Saiyan. Saiyan's rarely trained and believed that the power you were born with would determine your future. self-improvement Goku has defied the odds in many of his fights and he isn't afraid of someone even if they are more powerful. The interesting part of Goku and Broly first interaction is how Goku stared Broly down with no intimidation. However, Broly on the other hand is shaking and flustered. He couldn't believe someone would stand up to him that way. It annoyed him so much he was thinking to himself in his room. He even tried to attack Goku while Goku was sleeping. A cowardly move to say the least. During this fight Goku even made Broly bleed and Broly licks his blood after. Now why would broly do something like this? It was to intimidate Goku. Broly gets off in breaking his opponents will. It's why he enjoyed beating up the Z fighters so much. He could have easily killed them. But he chose to beat them up for quite a while. He can't get enough of beating up people weaker than he is we see this with the slaves as well when he blew up their planet Broly is a bully that has a sadistic love for picking on people weaker than him Similar to Vegeta who is shown giving up before the fight even began because of the gap in power between Broly and him. Broly is not only the perfect saiyan but he is cranked up to the max to the point he had no remorse killing his own father and laughing about it. It's the commonly held belief Saiyans had about power. Someone who is more powerful than you is superior to you and you shouldn't even try to fight back. This is where Goku breaks the mold. Goku is always willing to take on tough challenges he even welcomes it Now this is where the ending is scene is so important. Broly finally has the flashback about goku making him cry despite being weaker than him. Goku was weaker than Broly for most of the fight despite that Goku continued to get up over and over and over again. Not only did the ki from Goku friends is what lead to broly defeat it was the fact that Goku never gave up. It broke Broly mentally.
The best way I can describe Z Broly in all of his movies is as a Slasher Horror Villian. In his first movie he's Freddy Krueger, sadistically cracking jokes and pulling people through walls. The second movie he's Jason Voorhees, an unstoppable, nearly mindless force. Finally Bio-Broly is classic monster like The Creature From The Black Lagoon crossed with Frankenstein's monster and The Thing. When you look at his movies being references to American slasher movies, it makes a lot more sense.
Honestly that makes a lot of sense. I remember growing up with people and hearing that Broly scared them. Out of all the 13 original movies, Broly definitely had the most threatening presence
They push the Kakarot crap too much. They made Z Broly an over the top cartoon villan where he just yells "Kakarot" that turned people away until the Super Broly movie which is far superior
Z Broly is actually handled perfectly in Dragon Ball Heroes. He’s intimidating, brutal, and doesn’t just scream “KAKAROT”. He deduces Vegito is a fusion of Goku and Vegeta almost instantly and proceeds to lay the smack down on 2 of them! (SSJ4 and SSB)
Same with Xenoverse, really. "Learning" from him is more like "following him around as he blows shit up and hoping he doesn't decide to set his sights on you"
I was born in 91 and grew up with DBZ like most of us.... I can't understand what's so hard to get about broley. He's the quintessential super sayan like he literally lives up to the lore and I always assumed that was the whole point to his character, nothing more nothing less. There really is no mystery to him.
It's crazy to think that there could be a whole ongoing dialogue about Broly's motivations on Japanese forums and comments sections, but we'll likely never know. Obviously there are people who know both languages, but nobody would take the time to translate videos or conversations like this one into another language. Maybe Toei put out an interview in some magazine in the '90s that put the whole thing to bed, but no one ever took the time to paraphrase it into English.
@Vegoku Rulez the amv they are referencing isn't the scene for "is that another word for coffin," they are referring to the amv that is at the end of the video. The compilation of clips to the evanescence song. They were very popular in the early 2000s. The op comment is not referring to the music of the actual movie.
Unironically because TFS got so popular with DBZA fans actually confuse and took on their opinions as if theyre facts. Goku being a bad dad, Broly being upset by Goku crying just two examples off the top of my head.
Yamcha being a loser who got cheated on when in DBZ is the other way around, Bulma ditched him because the shy guy who wasn't able to speak to women turned into a player.
You give TFS too much credit. Goku is absent from all of his kids' lives in the show, he didn't even know Goten existed until he was like 9? The mfer could've had King Kai check in on Chichi and fin dout but he didn't care lol. And Broly being upset by Goku crying is canon from Broly 2 and Biobroly compounded by Goku putting him in a coma by attacking his scar. In Broly 1, not so much.
That INSTANTLY brought back so many memories! Evanescence with AMV! Back when UA-cam didn't have so many ads and wasn't toxic... those were the good old days!
Yup, the last few minutes made me feel like a teenager again, listening to basically any song put to visuals from either the show or fanart, and falling in love with both. Those AMVs also just so happened to define my taste in music forever. Evanescence, Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, A7X, and Lady Gaga were all introduced to me by those AMVs and they remain my favorite bands, with the AMV songs being my favorite songs.
That's what I like about the idea that Goku's presence and voice reminded him of the pain and suffering that he felt during his and Goku's infancy. I'll take that as a necessary explanation for Broly's aggression towards Goku's mere presence.
Even if that was the case, think. He was a damn baby. Didn't look like his mental was doing all that well on top of the physical abuse he soon got. the only thing he can remember from the darkest points of his life is Kakarots name, and the source of noise where he cant get peace. Babies can be easily prone to mental trauma. A Saiyan baby is no different.
I always took it as Goku's ki and crying is what bothered and heard during the same time he suffered enormous trauma (he was stabbed and let to die). That type of stuff sticks psychologically with you even if you were a baby.
@@aitorchul2262 no there got to be a large number of fans who never actually watched the show but just the abridged series/youtube shorts/fight of it and the game which only shows the highlight

Exactly i'll never agree when people claim Second Coming "Ruined" Broly he only acted like that due to being in the regular Saiyan form its kinda similar to Janemba when he kept repeating his own name then when he transformed into the Devilish Form he says nothing at all, With Broly eversince he came across Goku in the 1st movie all he kept repeating was "Kakarot" in Base and Regular Saiyan state but when he went Legendary he finally showed his personality having a shit ton of Memorable Quotes, In Second Coming he spent a longer amount of time in the regular saiyan form so it makes sense why he kept saying Kakarot but notice how when he went Legendary again all of that stopped and the first thing he told Gohan was "Not Until You Lie Dead At My Feet" yeah the writers could of gave him more lines after he went Legendary again but i honestly don't like how people misunderstand Second Coming as Broly being "Mindless" when the guy in his normal Saiyan form literally tossed a Ki Blast at Gohan then stopped it at the last minute to deliver a smirk then redirects the blast at Goten and the others for giggles like seriously this scene is similar to the 1st movie with Broly pretending to throw the blast at the Alien slaves then blows up their planet instead so in all honesty Z Broly wasn't mindless at all in the 2nd movie he was more pissed off sure but never mindless he still knew what he was doing and loved torturing everyone. Despite the constant Second Coming bashing with this fandom i'll always defend that movie it was decent and had cool moments its not as good as the 1st movie but still decent regardless and not as bad as people make it out to be
@@chadgrimes252I mean you could say that, but the 2nd movie is the start of what every one thinks broly is. It perpetuates the idea tht he’s a big brute who hates goku
I think that highlighting the "Violent Problem Child" angle really does a lot to clarify and crystallize Z Broly's character. He's all the Saiyan values taken to a destructive extreme, to the point that even the other Saiyans balk at him. That has real narrative value. I still prefer Super Broly as a character, but this video turned me around on Z Broly. Thanks!
Yeah, the concept is "This is what Goku would have been if he had not been sent to Earth" Its not really Goku Vs Broly, its Goku and Vegeta against the sins of their fathers. Its the New Saiyans versus the Old Saiyans Broly's entire character motivation is his absolute hatred of the father figure, he wants the children of Goku and Vegeta to feel the pain of betrayal that he went through with his dad
Are we forgetting that broly has multiple personalities? Broly normally seems to be a kind, gentle being. One that upon looking on them. You know they would not fight. Until he is triggered.
@@thepackable its not multiple personalities at all. You completely misunderstood something important. Broly first asks "Kakarot, how much do you love your son?" then after seeing Goku send Gohan away to protect him goes after Gohan to hurt Goku emotionally. Broly is not only intelligent but can understand others emotions which allows him to use them to cause pain. When Goku runs to check on Gohan, Broly leaps in font of him to block him, before continuing the fight. This actually makes him a bit more terrifying than a mindless brute because he isn't trying to just kill you but instead trying to inflict as much pain (of any kind) as he can until you die.

I was quite disappointed in the Super Broly. They "canonized" him for fanservice and cash but beyond vaguely looking similar it's not even the same person. They made him into a soft-hearted nice guy, he wasn't even a Super Saiyan until Frieza treats the death of a loved one as a cheap super saiyan button. It's like they sterilized and domesticated Broly for a modern audience and I hate it.
@@orenji-sama514I respectfully disagree. I enjoyed Super Broly so much more than Z Broly. His backstory was better explored, he had actual character and personality, and his development was nice to see. New Broly stopped talking for the whole movie after he starts fighting, so it’s hard to gauge his opinions on anything that happens after. Not to mention his backstory is pretty much the same as old Broly, getting used by Paragus and such, minus being born on the same day as Goku and going insane of course. We get a backstory about a pet he had that Paragus got rid off, but that’s not much really. Broly doesn’t really change in the movie, he just gets “freed” from Paragus and Frieza, and has friends. He’s as much of a static character as the old Broly IMO. He’s like Tarzan mixed with the hulk, but without the nuance of Hulk’s dynamic with Banner. I think a lot a people just think him being a good person = him being better written.
@@shadowstorm6458 His development is more so on his life than character progression. Throughout the movie, Broly was treated more of a creature than a person, to the point where his own father put a shock collar on him. Broly's reaction to the remote says a lot about him and their relationship. It was so bad the only compassion he ever received before Cheelai was from an animal. A fucking animal. Now he has friends who care about him, and people willing to help him control his power instead of trying to keep it sealed shut. We never got to know Z Broly. He was always either brainwashed or bat shit insane. Sure, we knew his backstory, but we never got to really know who he was. Super Broly gave us more of a chance to understand him because he got to emote, react and speak his mind. We know he respects his father despite the shock collar. We know he cares for others with how he defended Cheelai. We know he cherishes the relationships he develops with others with how he kept Baah's ear and refuses to take it off. And we know that, despite everything Paragus did, Broly still cared about him given how his death was the trigger to become a Super Saiyan. Z Broly just broke out of mind control and beat everybody's asses. Sure, Super Broly might not have gotten that much development in general, but I do personally consider him a more fleshed out character with more potential for growth than Z Broly did. Then again, one was written to be a villain and the other was written to be a sympathetic himbo forced into being an antagonist, so take that as you will.
Ehh I like the Japanese voice line where Broly call himself THE DEVIL rather than a "True Freak" but I still love the English dub heck love Japanese version and English dub equally
If I spoke Japanese I’d probably be able to appreciate it more but the voices in the English dub are just so iconic to me now the Japanese version sounds alright I’m sire the captions don’t do the dialogue justice though
I didn't even know people disliked Z Broly, my friends and I always thought he was sick. Dude is so strong he changed the color palette when he transformed in the first movie lol
I love Super Broly, but it took him showing up to help me get a newfound respect for Z Broly. He’s amazing to watch with how powerful and cunning he is.
Honestly, I hate how they did broly in the new movie, bro gets clapped by electric shocks making him seem weaker then he is, while z broly straight up got his mind fucked with.
Super Broly is a pussy on steroids he is a soft retarded boy with anger issues unlike Z broly who is a savage an unstoppable killing machine he only lost to goku because the plot says goku always wins you can literally feel the savageness and badness of broly in the way he talks especially the way he said that he isn't a demon but he is the Devil
@@cauliflablack8329 it may have been a conditional thing. It's up in the air that Broly is getting murked by massive voltage of electricity or he was mentally trained to think it pains him. Either way, Compared to Z Broly, Super's was not restricted by power and it was mainly his emotions.

I totally agree with this I've personally always thought that even if it was the crying Broly was mad at, it wasn't just cuz it was annoying. I viewed it as Broly's only moments of peace in his life being ruined by Goku's crying. Like Broly is constantly feeling some type of rage and, assuming saiyan children remember stuff from that early which who knows they could, he associates Goku with where it all started going wrong. Irrational of course but I think that makes sense for him considering he never got the chance to get at King Vegeta or Frieza Also the (untrue) criticism of him being just a big dumb meat head is usually accompanied by people saying stuff like "Which DBZ has enough of" when in reality all the main villains are cunning and well spoken up until Buu and even then Super Buu is
Man years ago when I tried telling my friends it was an instinctual fear of Goku Broly has which is why he was crying as a baby they thought I was the dummy.. Lol I never once thought it was because he was crying. Also Broly's maniacal laugh after blowing up that planet... kind of really solidified what a psycho may look like as a kid.

Thank God there's another dude out here putting some respect on Z Broly's writing. The amount of damage T4S did to him is crazy, not that his later two movies helped...
I think that him getting flanderised by almost all of his subsequent appearances, followed by Super Broly, which played into the Feral aspect of his character, but also played more into his emotional state in a more empathetic way makes him seem much more dumb and bland than he is. Seriously, I probably still would've thought Z Broly had no personality if I hadn't seen this video, as I wasn't ever able to see the OG Broly movie, and every other appearance of the dude makes him a mindless monster with less emotion than the literal robots of the show.
Z Broly for years has been my favorite character in dragon ball ever since I saw Broly second coming for the first time on nicktoons. Broly kicked everyone’s ass, had a fantastic voice actor Vic Mignogna and has Pantera playing in the background for his transformation. Yet people focused so heavily on his backstory/motivation or lack there was. You don’t need a ground breaking backstory or motive to write a great character as explained in this video. Z Broly is an absolute badass!
straight up, 100% agree my guy, i hate the way the dragon ball community treats Z broly and i don't like super broly. everybody and their mother, when broly is put into a discussion, only ever remember Z broly as "big strong idiot who screams kakarot", yet they conflate this with his first movie counterpart. it was only in broly's second coming and bio-broly (the two worst movies when it comes to broly) that he became what everyone memes on him as. Broly in the first movie was a total bad ass. sadistic as all hell, smart as hell, insanely tanky, blood thirsty, dropped BOMB one liners and shit talks all day long, able to tank frieza world busters as a NEW BORN CHILD, was extremely unstable and looked and acted exactly how any and every saiyan warrior would imagine themselves looking like, a cold blooded warrior who could take on anyone. how strong do you gotta be, to be one of the only 2 people in dragon ball to make vegeta, the guy who doesn't give a damn who you are, cower in fear?, seconded only by beerus. he even talked in the first movie which is more then i can say for his dragon ball super counter part, if the line "kakarot, how much do you love your son?" doesn't give you chills then idk what does my man. Z broly is exactly what he is suppose to be, Z broly IS the embodiment of the saiyan dream down to the wire. and he OOZES personality and then you have DBS broly. . . oh god
That impromptu AMV at the end made me laugh really hard then I got clotheslined by a massive wave of Nostalgia. Great video it certainly made me reconsider my views on old Broly. As much as I like new Broly I miss the brutality of Saiyans.
I literally dont know anyone in my private life who hates OG Broly. Like you said, he is fun to watch, he destroys the entire cast, talks trash, and he is an absolute beserk. We all love it. He is just a blatant psychopath but that was never a bad thing for us. But I also love the new Broly. Broly is awesome all of them, even the Bio freak because he gave the kids and 18 some screentime xD
I love how one of the comments at 1:35 was "He's evil and sadistic for no reason". Dude is a SAIYAN. *THATS HIS REASON THEY"RE ALL EVIL AND SADISTIC* amongst the fact that *THE DUDE WAS CAST OUT AND ALMOST KILLED AS BABY* some people are really so dense
Giving OG broly a video and Hearing you like GT is all I needed to hear to know that THIS is a channel where REAL Dragon Ball fans can enjoy content. No matter which series ❤️
Cuz honestly, it's all about just what you like. Mr toriyama make you rest, gave us so many versions you can choose what you want. You can watch all of dragon Ball and go from the fun to the serious, or just watch Z and go right into the action. You can watch GT if you want Super Saiyan 4 the transformation that's based off of the golden age and legendary Super saiyan. Or you can go to dragon Ball super where you have ultra instinct and ultra ego which is mastery of the person's techniques and soul. Movies that fit into the canon, or movies that can do whatever they want because they're outside the Canon. It kind of shocks me how in dragon Ball we can argue about canon, when there's multiple universes and timelines even within the authentic manga Canon😂
This has always been my favorite db movie even tho my whole life I thought broly hated goku bc of the crying until you’re video. I’m gonna subscribe to your theory. You da man
Another thing that ppl fail to see is how repressed his personality is, alltrough the movie up until he explodes he is quiet and somewhat humble, but as many ppl highlight , his thirst for battle combited with what the new movie said about his power taking control, results in his ego letting lose, not only his power was let lose but his personality also
Seeing this perspective on Broly's motivation actually gives a cool little deep! Think of it like Saiyans are so violent because they are 50/50 intellect and primal instinct. Broly as a "Super" Saiyan, have more power but also more animal instinct over IQ than other Saiyans, which os why he was so violent since the start. Now, with Broly's massive latent power as a baby, paired with his natural tap into both Ki (he could make a shield and fly as a baby), he could sense ki and power in young age, unlike nobody else in the Saiyan race that were present in that laboratory or something the saiyan babies are kept. Maybe high class Saiyans could have felt the same, but I don't think thet dont even get time to go there, so Kakarot was unoticed by everyone, except Broly himself. Now, his primal instincts made Broly react to that massive power from Goku's like a carnivorous animal: He felt a bigger predator than him, and so, like a carnivorous animal he felt threated. And what carnivorous animals do when they are threated? They became hostile.
Remember when Frieza couldn’t sense Goku on Namek? Infant Broly was tapped into that primal Ki Warrior instinct and he definitely felt something unique about Goku.
I love your comment, but my response will have nothing to do with it. I’m responding here cuz it’s the only way for people to see my comment. The reason why Broly is reduced to “KAKAROT” as his only dialogue is because he developed speech issues. I don’t think it’s a writing hiccup, I think it’s genuinely a part of his character. Getting obliterated by an asteroid can change your life. I think Broly, in the second movie, is dealing with severe brain damage. Possibly CTE.
@loxt993 obviously there’s trauma, you’re right. Broly likely had his fear of Goku confirmed and validated by that experience. But I’m talking about concussions. Brain trauma. The type of physical damage that changes who you are as a person. Broly was likely dealing with CTE or something adjacent to it in the second movie. It makes more sense to me than just shitty writing. They wouldn’t give him such good dialogue in the first movie only to reduce him “KAKAROT” in the second movie. Broly has brain damage.
Man i absolutely think you nailed it on the head, on why broly was so bothered by goku's presence. His ability to sense goku's hidden potential makes complete sense to me. Also people always shit on z broly; thinking he's just a mindless brute, they must've forgot. Z broly, in the first movie, was complete savage. His one liners were a treat; he was also in a more clearer mental control during in battle, its just crazy how the super broly caused everybody to shit on old broly. lastly for the record I prefer the design of z broly way more.
Honestly this will always be my favorite version of Broly, I was a fan of him since I seen the movie and playing him in the games, he’s a mad powerhouse, a damn killer beast and I love it, brutal as hell. 🤘🏽
That goofy amv segment was unexpected, but very welcomed. Got shot back to early days of UA-cam seeing them, well done on the video. Z Broly will always be a treat to watch, I remember showing him to one of my cousins who never watched Dragon Ball, so seeing his reactions to Goku and the gang getting stomped was funny as hell.
The fact that you used budokai tenkaichi 2 soundtrack as the bgm and starting it off with Arcadia village (my favorite song), talking about my fav dbz character and adding that mid 2000’s ass amv, makes this one of my favorite video’s of all time. Thank you
Great work on the video. As someone who appreciates Z Broly quite a lot, I enjoyed this video greatly. People not understanding why Broly hates Goku has always confused me. Here's the thing, traumatic experiences can be marked by many things. Colors, sounds, textures, etc. So I've always just imagined that Gokus constant screaming left an impact on Broly. Likely due to the fact that around the time they were in their nursing capsules is when Broly got stabbed. That's Brolies trauma. The first time he's felt fear. The first time he's been near death even. I would say Gokus crying is the actual thing which made Broly cry. That trauma was reawakened when Broly met Goku again. So Broly snaps. He feels that fear again. Goku may be, at least subconsciously, a symbol of death for Broly. Which is why when Goku punches him it flashes back to them crying in their capsules. It's not just a kid crying. It's a traumatic reminder of the time Broly was last vulnerable. I like your explanation too however! Especially with how they comment on infant Gokus rowdiness. Anyhow, keep up the great work!
I don't think you understand Broly either, but you get him better than most. Here's my ramble about him with mental health in mind: All this time I've always thought the Broly kakarot trigger thing was dumb as hell. But I've seen what trauma looks like, and I know that sometimes people don't get scared of the thing that hurt them, they get scared of the thing happening at the time. My little sister when she was just a toddler went up to the stereo player and pulled it onto herself and got hurt. She didn't get scared of electronics and wires, she became scared of the song that was playing at the time. Any time it played she cried and screamed. Babies or young children don't always make logical connections, and that's where a lot of strange phobias come from. I knew this, but I've NEVER applied it to Broly because as a character I just deemed him too badly written to ever give the benefit of the doubt to. But he was, as a baby, stabbed, just after having to listen to Goku wail on end. On top of hearing him, Broly also probably would've been able to sense Goku, which is why I don't think he ever needed to visually or audibly recognise Goku for this trigger to take effect. I don't think he could sense how strong he'd become later because that's nonsense, no offense. That's grasping at straws and doesn't have anything backing it up. It's more sensible to just say he remembers Goku's Ki. With that context added, that mental health was actually considered properly, it flips everything I thought I knew about him. I just never bothered to give it thought before. His constantly ignored personality being what happens when a saiyan, already raised in a terrible enviroment to enjoy violence, also has trauma and an awful father. If not for Frieza, Broly would have likely become a legendary serial killer and would have probably destroyed planet Vegeta himself. But if not for King Vegeta (and frieza), he also probably would have grown up to be the hero of the saiyans. He is a tragic character, mistreated from birth because he was too strong. Never allowed to use his full strength but still made to fight for his father. The guy really needed therapy. I think he'd have liked it if people stopped being scared of him. Because those that feared him, hurt him. But he was a scary guy, so if that was something that pissed him off more, that's really damn unfortunate. And the one guy that was never scared of him, Goku, well they probably coulda been friends, but oops Goku's power level feels like that feeling Broly felt the day he was stabbed. Broly's transformation into the legendary super saiyan was not just the moment he was free of his father's mind control, but also the moment he realised he was stronger than his trauma. When Goku punches him and makes him bleed we see him look uncomfortable, before smiling. I think this shows his slowly growing sense of freedom from his past. His transformation is the physical representation of his sense of freedom from everything that had been holding him back. And it was just damn badass! It's just not much of a celebratory moment for anyone else, because Broly's personality is very murdery. His mental health improving at this moment is situationally a bad thing. All in all I keep finding myself not just loving how awesome he is, how fun he is in a fight, but wishing he had a better ending. He is one of the most tragic villains in DBZ. New Broly is nothing like him at all and did not sate that wish at all.
Z Broly has PTSD from his past and split personality disorder due to the power of being LSSJ. Saiyan babies have great memory that they are sent to other planets to conquer. Broly hates Goku because he reminds him of the day of being stabbed. He remembers Goku ki and hearing the name Kakarot as baby. When he first met Goku again as an adult, he sensed his ki triggering his ptsd reminding him of that day. Goku is the link to the pain he felt as a baby. Its not that Broly blames Goku for what happened but Goku triggers the psychological trauma of the incident causing him to relive the experience of being stabbed in the chest as a baby. So how does Broly get rid of that pain? By getting rid of Goku. Broly split personality was affected by his past and LSSJ power. LSSJ power is more unique than the regular SSJ. Lssj is constantly overflowing with power that it is much more harder to control. When Goku went ssj1 for the first time he told Gohan to leave since he almost lost it with rage. When saiyans ascend to ssj1 and above their power increases as well as their aggressive savage saiyan natures increases for example ssj3 Goku and Gohan ssj2 they were more serious and willing to kill. Goku had his saiyan nature changed from hitting his head as a baby and Gohan is better raised by Goku and is half human. So imagine being a natural born saiyan with Lssj power who had a harsh past of being stabbed as a baby and raised as a weapon by your dad. Base Broly was more shy and docile until his power takes over making him lose control which is why Paragus put the headpiece on him to control his powers and to prevent his other personality from coming out
The problem is that Broly is actually really simple, but people overcomplicate him and it ends up confusing them instead. Kakarot is not Broly's motivation to be violent, he already is. Paragus was making sure he doesn't remember but seeing Goku made him remember.
Nah there for sure is a reason. Because normally we see Broly is normal and nonviolent. Only Goku made him snap. Its obviously the memory of Goku taking him back when he got stabbed and left for dead.
@@sharkquisha3407 Broly was violent before Goku came back into his life. Hence Paragus putting the band on him and how he lost his eye even before that.
@@UnifiedEntity he didnt have his crown device before that. He could still lose control and lash out without his dad to use the device to calm him down.
This was a great breakdown about the Broly character and I truly believe in the added depth you talked about him being afraid and feeling threatened by Goku's power. Hadn't quite looked at it that way. And yes the American soundtrack does really kick ass in this film.
Thank you! I knew I wasn't the only one who felt this way! People completely missed the point of what Goku crying as a baby both foreshadowed and symbolized.
To this day as a 26 year old I HAVE to watch this movie with the original english soundtrack. The early 2000s rock/metal vibe just fits Broly’s character so perfectly and also gets me hyped
I can't stand the original Japanese music on anything this series has ever done, period. Which has very little to even do with nostalgia I literally just hate the music and think the American stuff fits better. In the movies the licensed music can be hit or miss on weather lyrically they fit, but regardless I'm just a fan of that kind of music and most of those bands anyway and think the rock music fits the tone better. If it was all instrumental versions of the songs they would all fit perfectly fine. And then other songs are just lyrically vague enough that they could fit with just about anything.
this video brings up some valid points that I was unaware of and made me see the character as more than just a screaming maniac that says kakarot. Great job dude.
THANK YOU. Broly is my favorite villain ever. He might not be the best written villain to ever grace dragon ball, but by far he’s the most fun. Broly just radiates power and intimidation. Every time he’s on screen he steals the show. I want to see more of THIS Broly. The OG.
I prefer the Super version. Because he retains his intimidation, I mean that scene of his transforming with the red eyes and stuff is awesome, while also actually have more character.
Yea this makes more sense than an infant sensing another infant's potential
Yep, makes way more sense than all the reaching in this video
he may have had some sort of "combat social anxiety" as a trigger, and goku's constant energetic fighting spirit, regardless of his low power level, constantly annoyed a baby broly whose psyche tries to protect from his own power by trying to keep him calm. That kind of trait fits with his characterization through the whole movie imho
Broly has no ptsd...

Something I remember sticking with me was in an interview Z Brolys creator saying there was a lot of scrapped dialogue where he wanted to give broly more of a somber personality. Specifically his asking “What am i”
I like the 2nd Broly movie, but i can't blame it enough for pushing that kakarot shit so much

It also completely undercuts every single "No personality" argument. He has a whole ass Villain Monologue.

My interpretation ^ inspired heavily from Lonely Boy Adventurer
If u look at 18:13 then u can see right after he gets hit hard enough to bleed he smiles. That’s just more proof of your love of fighting idea
@@inboundira329 Yes, and he proceeds to lick his own blood which signifies that the dude is quite blood-thirsty 😂
This is the only interpretation that makes sense to me now. Thanks for sharing
You know why that makes no sense? Broly never saw Goku’s face as an infant, nor did he ever hear his name. So the fact that he can remember things that he never learned in the first place is crazy. Not to mention that his face, voice, and name are ALL different now as an adult.

@@bluesbest1 The youtube algorithm is broken again

That's what I think too, Broly mostly dislikes Goku's fighting spirit since they were babies.
That's actually a very good way of looking at it I'd have never thought to see it that way, it's a great theory 👍
I always saw it as being Goku is just the trigger for all of his painful memories of his childhood trauma. Maybe Goku and his crying just triggers latent PTSD memories of being stabbed and left for dead as a baby, something no one should ever endure.
My interpretation is this:
What upsets and unnerves Broly is that he knows he's powerful, yet finds himself unsure and without control.
It's definitely either that or Its not the crying itself that broly hates its because its one of the things he remembers from his very traumatic childhood which gave him ptsd
I feel like either on of these work
Vader would litterally smile.. maybe compliment him... and choke him without losing a beat
This kinda vaguely reminds me of Xenoverse 2 (spoilers)
At the part with Mira and the Masked Saiyan where Mira talks about how he is the perfect fighter but there's something about the Masked Saiyan he just can't replicate and he's kinda mad about it.

This video just gave me a different perspective and further makes me appreciate Z Broly even more
Same here, I watched the 1st Broly movie DVD until it was mostly covered in scratches.
Z Broly has one of, if not the best transformation scenes in the show, with Pantera blasting in the background.
Super will never be able to match it
You aren't alone I loved Z Broly
I always thought Broly was just literally insane, like straight serial killer vibes. Paragus’s flashback shows us that Broly was violent and unstable. He’s chemically imbalanced and Paragus had to put a mind control device on him to avoid being the next victim. He’s a psychopath that rains terror much like King Vegeta predicted. I think Goku was a simply a trigger that made him snapp.
KAKAROTTO!!!!!!!
Yea. Never read too much into it, and I don' think anyone was meant to
He's the "truest" saiyan, with all of their instincts and tendencies taken to the greatest extreme. And he's a raging, psychotic, murderous monster. There's something great about that narrative despite its simplicity
king vegeta ironically is the one who made him that way in trying to prevent his upbringing
he likely would have been too much to handle anyways, but king vegeta only made the problem far worse
Vegita
@loxt2 my theory is only about why he had that reaction to Goku. His dad for the original movie was a piece of work, He was okay leaving his son to die when the comment hit. The fact Broly was uncontrollable didn't help, but still, damn.
good take, dragon team sounds stupid af tho
I believe its Paragus meddling with his emotions, his outburst and lack of control of his power and the physical and mental abuse(Goku's crying not giving Broly peace and the only reminder he had of a time as a baby) amplified over time creating the power freak true fans know and love today.
Broly is a tragic character of sorts. He's a savant. Powerful yet unstable. He delights in death and destruction because that's what life presented to him.
That amv was a much appreciated blast to the past😢 thank you for this phenomenal video
The complete opposite of Goku who is always excited to fight stronger opponents
This goes back to alot of the beliefs Saiyan's had. How Vegeta constantly boasted to Goku about being a high class Saiyan. Saiyan's rarely trained and believed that the power you were born with would determine your future.
self-improvement
Goku has defied the odds in many of his fights and he isn't afraid of someone even if they are more powerful.
He can't get enough of beating up people weaker than he is we see this with the slaves as well when he blew up their planet Broly is a bully that has a sadistic love for picking on people weaker than him
Similar to Vegeta who is shown giving up before the fight even began because of the gap in power between Broly and him. Goku is always willing to take on tough challenges he even welcomes it
Now this is where the ending is scene is so important.
A comment that actually understands The Saiyan of Legend💯This pretty much sums up what Broly was about during the movie
@@chadgrimes252 stop dickeating that literally makes no sense
The best way I can describe Z Broly in all of his movies is as a Slasher Horror Villian.
In his first movie he's Freddy Krueger, sadistically cracking jokes and pulling people through walls.
The second movie he's Jason Voorhees, an unstoppable, nearly mindless force.
Finally Bio-Broly is classic monster like The Creature From The Black Lagoon crossed with Frankenstein's monster and The Thing.
When you look at his movies being references to American slasher movies, it makes a lot more sense.

Probably unintended by the creators but yeah I can see it.
Honestly that makes a lot of sense. I remember growing up with people and hearing that Broly scared them. Out of all the 13 original movies, Broly definitely had the most threatening presence
you know, that works really well...

Unironically because TFS got so popular with DBZA fans actually confuse and took on their opinions as if theyre facts. Goku being a bad dad, Broly being upset by Goku crying just two examples off the top of my head.

I always thought it was weird that broly had so much aggression at goku, it was always an easy cop out that it was gokus crying was the reason
That's what I like about the idea that Goku's presence and voice reminded him of the pain and suffering that he felt during his and Goku's infancy. I'll take that as a necessary explanation for Broly's aggression towards Goku's mere presence.

I still prefer Super Broly as a character, but this video turned me around on Z Broly. Thanks!
Yeah, the concept is "This is what Goku would have been if he had not been sent to Earth"
Its not really Goku Vs Broly, its Goku and Vegeta against the sins of their fathers.
Its the New Saiyans versus the Old Saiyans
Broly's entire character motivation is his absolute hatred of the father figure, he wants the children of Goku and Vegeta to feel the pain of betrayal that he went through with his dad

This actually makes him a bit more terrifying than a mindless brute because he isn't trying to just kill you but instead trying to inflict as much pain (of any kind) as he can until you die.

he's bothered by goku due to being able to sense goku's potential
they even mention in the crying scene how goku's crying is a sign of a great saiyan fighting spirit, which broly, despite being a baby, can still sense
and him being able to sense goku's potential really isn't so far fetched when we see him make an energy shield and fly on the same day
the first time he meets goku in the movie, the same thing happens again, with them having a staredown with their ki's highlighted, broly is frightened by this, shown when he's sweating on the throne, and later his saiyan instincts kick in and he transforms to take care of him
and broly only recognises kakarot's ki is the same as the one from when he was a baby at the very end of the fight, when he gets uppercut and has a flashback to it, and of course, the dub like always fucks a bunch of shit up by changing dialogue, he only refers to goku as kakarot because *vegeta* did so right before goku and broly had their staredown, he says kakarot before he transforms, since he's mainly transforming to fight him, and when he's directly speaking to him, the second movie severly fucks this up by having kakarot be all he ever talks about
TLDR: broly is motivated by his saiyan instincts, not just some crying baby from 20 years ago
When talking about the original Broly movie my mind always goes back to the scene where Broly eats a kamehameha, picks goku by the head with one hand, and punches him so hard the screen shatters.
The English Dub Version of Broly had the best lines in the entire series.
🗿🗿🗿🐐🐐🐐
Ehh I like the Japanese voice line where Broly call himself THE DEVIL rather than a "True Freak" but I still love the English dub heck love Japanese version and English dub equally
"How about giving us a handicap?!"
"Is that another word for *coffin?"*
If I spoke Japanese I’d probably be able to appreciate it more but the voices in the English dub are just so iconic to me now the Japanese version sounds alright I’m sire the captions don’t do the dialogue justice though
Excellent video. Couldn't have explained it better. And the ending is pure nostalgia.
Bravo sir
Either way,
Compared to Z Broly, Super's was not restricted by power and it was mainly his emotions.
@@cauliflablack8329 could be also a PTSD thing that S broly is just terrified of that punishment so when it happens it just feels a lot worse then it was
@@cauliflablack8329 How strong he actually is doesn't change the effectiveness of the shock, if it was used on him since childhood that means his brain has decades of conditioning reinforcing the shock as something to avoid. I totally agree with this
I've personally always thought that even if it was the crying Broly was mad at, it wasn't just cuz it was annoying. I viewed it as Broly's only moments of peace in his life being ruined by Goku's crying. Like Broly is constantly feeling some type of rage and, assuming saiyan children remember stuff from that early which who knows they could, he associates Goku with where it all started going wrong. Irrational of course but I think that makes sense for him considering he never got the chance to get at King Vegeta or Frieza
Also the (untrue) criticism of him being just a big dumb meat head is usually accompanied by people saying stuff like "Which DBZ has enough of" when in reality all the main villains are cunning and well spoken up until Buu and even then Super Buu is
Man years ago when I tried telling my friends it was an instinctual fear of Goku Broly has which is why he was crying as a baby they thought I was the dummy.. Lol I never once thought it was because he was crying. Also Broly's maniacal laugh after blowing up that planet... kind of really solidified what a psycho may look like as a kid.
I think I heard once that while every baby was silent goku was the only one bellowing a representation of his warriors spirit
@@durrangodsgrief6503 I like that
@@durrangodsgrief6503Saiyans follow a power hierarchy instinctually so they were silent as to give broly his higher standing. But Goku defied hierarchy of Saiyan instinct.
Seriously, I probably still would've thought Z Broly had no personality if I hadn't seen this video, as I wasn't ever able to see the OG Broly movie, and every other appearance of the dude makes him a mindless monster with less emotion than the literal robots of the show.
he has no writing
Just came to say I unironically loved the AMV
Z Broly for years has been my favorite character in dragon ball ever since I saw Broly second coming for the first time on nicktoons. Broly kicked everyone’s ass, had a fantastic voice actor Vic Mignogna and has Pantera playing in the background for his transformation. Yet people focused so heavily on his backstory/motivation or lack there was. You don’t need a ground breaking backstory or motive to write a great character as explained in this video. Z Broly is an absolute badass!
Yep Vic was magnificent as Broly
Thank you for making this video, I feel like Z Broly is just so misunderstood and people can’t understand why he is what he is.
Yeah you right
straight up, 100% agree my guy, i hate the way the dragon ball community treats Z broly and i don't like super broly. everybody and their mother, when broly is put into a discussion, only ever remember Z broly as "big strong idiot who screams kakarot", yet they conflate this with his first movie counterpart. it was only in broly's second coming and bio-broly (the two worst movies when it comes to broly) that he became what everyone memes on him as.
Z broly is exactly what he is suppose to be, Z broly IS the embodiment of the saiyan dream down to the wire. and he OOZES personality
and then you have DBS broly. . . oh god
Or just badly written.
@@yungmuney5903 all of DBS is badly written
@@MTGDuelist8870 he was not smart as hell he had the most normal intelligence anybody would have
the amv at the end finished it for me, what a great video!
This is a lot of mental gymnastics; if he was misunderstood, there would be one explanation, but we have so many. It was most likely the crying.
14:37 That is a weird way to explain their differences, and I like it.
This was actually a good deconstruction of Z Broly, looking forward to seeing more stuff from you
17:18 don’t think you understood how hyped you got me had to replay the shit
I love how one of the comments at 1:35 was "He's evil and sadistic for no reason". Dude is a SAIYAN. *THATS HIS REASON THEY"RE ALL EVIL AND SADISTIC* amongst the fact that *THE DUDE WAS CAST OUT AND ALMOST KILLED AS BABY* some people are really so dense
Bro this is a really good video. This got me rewatching the movie again and seeing it in a better light.
BRO I LOVED Z BROLY AS A KID, NO ONE ELSE DID EITHER ITS CRAZY
I love how he is now called Z Broly.
Almost like saying "THE Broly". This video really put that into emphasis.
Giving OG broly a video and
Hearing you like GT is all I needed to hear to know that THIS is a channel where REAL Dragon
Ball fans can enjoy content.
You da man
Another thing that ppl fail to see is how repressed his personality is, alltrough the movie up until he explodes he is quiet and somewhat humble, but as many ppl highlight , his thirst for battle combited with what the new movie said about his power taking control, results in his ego letting lose, not only his power was let lose but his personality also
Finally the conversation no one wanted to have but had to happen someday
Man dropped this banger of a video and dipped from his channel. What a legend
Nobody gives a crap when Vegeta gets obsessed.
@@BiggityBoggity8095 This is so sad and so funny at the same time
@loxt993 obviously there’s trauma, you’re right.
The AMV at the end was the cherry on top.
GG, subbed.
Honestly this will always be my favorite version of Broly, I was a fan of him since I seen the movie and playing him in the games, he’s a mad powerhouse, a damn killer beast and I love it, brutal as hell. 🤘🏽
For me, Z Broly's existence validated the fear Frieza had against Saiyans. You can't reason with, threaten, bribe, or beg Z Broly. He just destroys.
13:10 I completely forgot about this scene. Pure and utter disrespect and terror being inflicted here
The fact that you used budokai tenkaichi 2 soundtrack as the bgm and starting it off with Arcadia village (my favorite song), talking about my fav dbz character and adding that mid 2000’s ass amv, makes this one of my favorite video’s of all time. Thank you
Yep!! Soo good!! Dark Half😊
Sick AMV bro.
I don't think you understand Broly either, but you get him better than most. Here's my ramble about him with mental health in mind:
All this time I've always thought the Broly kakarot trigger thing was dumb as hell.
Amazing comment bro
Not bad
Exactly my thoughts on New Broly. He is nothing like the original Broly
Base Broly was more shy and docile until his power takes over making him lose control which is why Paragus put the headpiece on him to control his powers and to prevent his other personality from coming out
Yooooo the AMV part brought back so many memories where I would watch dbz movies on UA-cam thank you for including it
The AMV at the end got me nostalgic as fuck this is probably one of the best videos I’ve watched all year
The problem is that Broly is actually really simple, but people overcomplicate him and it ends up confusing them instead.
@@UnifiedEntity yeah but the same thing could have happened even with Goku not being around. He could have been reminded.
@@sharkquisha3407 Triggered to the point he broke out of his shackles? Highly doubtful. Goku was the trigger to set him free
