In 1993 Toei Animation released two video game related OVA's - Dragon Ball Z Side Story: Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans.
Although his might seem like an un important project on the surface, it had the franchises biggest names involved, from script writer Takao Koyama to animators like Tadayoshi Yamamuro, Kazuya Hisada, Naotoshi Shida, Masahiro Shimanuki and many more other talents on board.
So join me today as we dive into this OVA and more in today's video.

Awesome video!
@@TramiNguyen-oi3kp thanks so much Trami!
@@forgottenrelics1197 you’re welcome!
man, you know all the names of the animators, awesome
This was so confusionary to the point I didn't even know how many endings this OVA had. There's One where Goku finishes Hatchiyack off with the Genkidama(weirdly enough as a Ssj), One where they beat hin all togheter in an Energy Attack, One where they beat him in a beam struggle(Only piccolo Is missing) and One where Hatchiyack becomes giant. I could be missing some more alternative scenes tho.
Heck I Remember there also was a scene where Piccolo Special Beam Cannon clashes with Slug Full Power Energy wave, but I couldn't find that clip anymore...
I think that’s because of DBZ’s Gaiden story Plan to eradicate the saiyans also having an “interactive film laserdisc type of video game” adaptation on the Japan exclusive console called the playdia system, where there were Newley made animated moments & scene variations of the two part storyline or the ova special in its own way such as seeing that blue haired fairy & tao pai pai again and I just always found this one to be the most interesting out of all the other adaptations of this same ova saga side-story.
Was there an ending where Gohan goes SSJ2?
@@JoseC687 unsure. but he's drawn in ssj2 by Masaki Sato for the promo art of this ova. for whatever reason...
@@JoseC687nope, not in the broly movie or in this ova, only in the bojack movie he goes ssj2.
Bc he would've overshadow everyone if he went SSJ2 i guess.
Hot take: Toei & Shueisha should go back doing OVAs for Dragon Ball. Better than getting a movie every 6-7 years.
The movies is more likely to have really good animation tho and toei will make more money that way
They should make a Majin Ozotto OVA
@@windandfireproductions5358 Too bad we got the shitty super hero movie
a Majin Neko Special that comes alongside Daima would be pretty cool 🧑🦯
@@windandfireproductions5358 I think an OVA series could introduce some fun side content that doesn't have to be encapsulated into 2 hours.
Might give us a better means to have more solid 2D animation too so you don't have to deal with expansive CG.
might be good
Turles hating the Saiyans makes a ton of sense, considering his entire motivation was to escape that life because he felt like he was being treated like a disposable soldier.
still tho saying his hatred is greater than both freeza and cooler of all characters seems a bit extreme. Turles even gives his reasoning after saying this hatred of saiyans comes from the fact he was "killed by a saiyan", which isn't any different to freeza and cooler
It's an interesting aspect of the character that i wish was explored on his own movie
@@forgottenrelics1197 wowww...makes sense cus I never really understood his motive ... INTERESTING!

I just love how you do a lot of research for this
it's my favourite part so i love doing it
I actually have a cel from this OVA
It was bought for me quite cheap because they didn’t know where it was from. I instantly knew.
The designs were Broly-esque and it the time Goku’s battle damage hadn’t been seen that often.
It’s a small scene where Goku begins to sit down after the fight is over.
It’s nice to own a piece of a forgotten episode and really cool.
ayee nice find. i haven't seen to many cels from these ova's
Was it just by itself or did it come with a background?
No background, but annoyingly the genga is stuck onto the back, if I try to remove it, it will damage it.
So annoyed people didn’t use to take care of these things

I would if I knew how haha
The "Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans" DBZ OVA is pretty much the Blueprint for "Super Dragon Ball Heroes" to come 2 or 3 Decades later.
Are you smoking Scooby doodick?
@@Areaninetyone real
They're both continuity-porn!
Wtf? They aren’t similar at all
How is it the blueprint? I don’t understand.
It's such a shame we may never get a higher quality rip of this OVA. It reminds me of how Toei doesn't really care about preserving the 1998/Season Zero YuGiOh anime and (almost) everything online for that is like VHS rips.
honestly i'm surprised Toei even re-released this ova with the Dragon Box set. missed opportunity for a remaster there. guess the best we can hope for is that kineko video comes across a scan
The fact that 1998 YuGiOh and the movie can't seem to be recognized enough is criminal on it's own
Yeah that is true but I have manged to stubble across some fan made upscale remasters of this ova so I think that’s as close as we’ll get for now.
Do any of the reused scenes in the Playdia games look any better?
@@BagOfMagicFood unfortunately it's worse. or at least going of the reuploads on YT like the clip at 17:04
My man, the graphics you design for these videos are a thing of beauty. You’ve nailed so many different visual aesthetics throughout your catalog of videos. Seriously impressive stuff. 🙌
thank ya, it's always a pain trying something new every vid but happy how this came out
7:05 I think fans were more forgiving since most of those appearances weren't directly canon to the series.
I probably could've worded that better. I was poking at the irony of fans criticising Super's writers for just "reusing" or "recycling old concepts" when in reality Toei's writers were doing the same back then. Not "they brought back villains before why is it a problem now" which seems to be how it came off. Because personally i'm not exactly a big fan of bringing back old villains either.
This was originally made to be shipped with a game, having older characters appear was literally just an excuse to make them playable, so it was fine.
@@forgottenrelics1197problem is most of Super's writing was just poor.... while even the mess that was GT had interesting concepts and improved storylines like Baby
@@jesusbarrera6916 a lot is, although personally I think Super had some interesting new characters and concepts of it's own.
"the fuck's an OVA?" - Vegeta, probably.
That was my exact thought. 🤷🏾♂️ Vegeta's my favorite by the way
Most a Tuffle
Too bad toei hates us, we deserve a remaster of this OVA. The low quality always makes me sad
A truly remaster has ever seen in every ending in plus more. That would be great. And not that water down crap I got with raging blast 2
11:58 Huh, it is strange he didn't insert Broly into this OVA given how much he's his favorite character.
I’m def overthinking trying to bring logic into this but maybe dr. Lychee could only revive villains who were on earth
I think the simple answer is that this was an adaptation of a video game plotline and was meant to work as a visual guide for the game, so Koyama was restricted in making major changes to the plot to avoid conflicting with the original premise.
@@forgottenrelics1197 Ok that makes sense.

Was fun to do a proper video talking about the animation side of Dragon Ball Z again. If you want more breakdowns, please give like and all that, so i can gauge if this is content ya'll are still interested in. ty
One of my favorite subjects by far. Animation is such a crucial part of visual communication. I started watching Z (sub) before I could read. Every movement felt so important.
@@ToliG123 for sure, it's a very overlooked aspect that carries more weight than most anime fans give it credit for
I’d like to learn more about the processes for new animation. I know they use genga. But I don’t think it looks quite as crisp as old school animation

Barca won the treble that season
12:45 I dont get how a proffesional animator draws the biggest forehead known to man, and just says ''yeah that seems about right'' lmao
its strange because her art in earlier arcs like at 12:24 is nice. guess she struggled with the later designs
The weirdest thing about the android arc is that an earthling scientist could somehow create multiple beings stronger than base ssj. So yeah, if it was a tuffle scientist instead I could see it happening

Dude, it´s like every plot of the movies from the fanchise
Broly was not a ghost warrior in this film because he simply wasn't dead, as later revealed in Broly second coming.
I think King Cold would have made sense as a Ghost Warrior.
Koyama penned the script for this ova before he decided on bringing him back the next year in 94. so in the context when this came out, it could've been possible. the more likely reason he didn't is that these Ova's were intended as "visual guides" for the actual video game, so making drastic changes to the original plot would ofc cause a lot of confusion for the intended audience
As a dragon ball fan, this is the first time I've seen this... interesting.
Yea me to and I grew up on og toonami days …. I never seen this nether

PLOT TWIST: Bulma is secretly a tuffle
real
Maybe a human a Capsule Corp. sent a earthling around a civilization Tuffle technology Bulma has 1/16 human or Ex-Tuffle even a Trunks and Bra 1/2 Saiyan human
Frieza is like kenny from south park these days and nobody cares everyone is just soo happy to see the same guy over and over and over and over and over and over and over......
It's because Frieza is a pretty good villian. Frieza has some real ambitious being a conquerer. However, it's the whole him wanting to right the humiliation of a monkey being stronger than him that keeps him pushing for new heights of power.
@@Dijitz23I see what you mean, but that doesn't sound interesting at all. Besides, Freeza in Super has been either more of the same or a parody of himself.
Sure they tried something different with him in the tournament but IMO it wasn't worth bringing him back a 3rd time. Especially not with whatever the hell the manga is doing.
i'd say it was pretty good for what it was. it's pretty apparent this was just a side project, while DBZ was still in full swing.
That Vegeta vs Freeza clip was around a lot during the olden days of UA-cam (2006-2008)

I remember when I downloaded this from either Kazaa or Morpheus and it was just called something like "Lost Dragon Ball Z Movie" or something, and it was MINDBLOWING to me at the time, because the internet was still in its infancy, so the only place to get Dragon Ball information back then was still from those old Angelfire and Geocities fan pages with the corny music and gif templates all over the place...
So to find a movie that existed that was completely unknown(to a Westerner at least), was unbelievably exciting, and when I told a friend in school about it, he couldn't WAIT to come over after school to watch it at my house... we both sat in the living room computer and watched it with smiles ear to ear... I even remember burning it on a CD-R and putting that CD in a safe place so that it wouldn't get scratched or damaged(as most CDs did) in case I'd lost the file and couldn't find it again...
Thankfully, years later, it was included along with one of the Budokai or Tenkaichi games and it's been relatively easy to find ever since... but I miss those days before the internet became all encompassing, when you could still discover magical shit online that NOBODY had ever heard of like Anime, Music, Movies, Shows... etc... hell even Fan Art would fool us into thinking SSJ5 was real back in the day... good times...
Wasn't really good times like It created Misconceptions that are still here today like gohan was replaced due to fans.
@@SpeedPunch - It was good times, because while there may have been misconceptions due to lack of official outlets for information like the ABUNDANCE of official outlets we have today, I prefer the good old days, when you couldn't just GOOGLE something instantly and if you wanted to do your diligence, then you had to do the RESEARCH...
That's why people are fkin stupid today, because instead of having to WORK for information, which always yielded more information than you bargained for, we just Google anything and it takes us DIRECTLY to the source of the information, which we consume and then promptly forget because we didn't have to invest any time into researching it...
When I had to cite work for school or learn about something new, that shit stayed with me for life, whether it was a book report on birds or Italy, I didn't just GOOGLE footnotes, I sat in a library for HOURS reading interesting facts and information about the subject that I would have otherwise NEVER known unless I had to WORK for the research...
Kids today don't even use Google anymore, they're so fkin lazy and stupid that they just ask ChatGPT to write the damn book report FOR THEM...
So while misinformation and misconceptions were certainly a part of "the old days" i'll take them old days over the obsessive internet society we got today...
Hell even PORN was more fun to search for, now you can search up w.e porn you want at your fingertips.. I remember when we all used to jerk off to fkin Magazines, even Victoria Secret catalogs if you were too young to buy a porn mag, and when you found a mag you REALLY liked it was special, you kept that shit in a secret spot, and if they house ever caught fire, you bet your ass you were gonna run and grab that porn mag before the house burnt down and you lost it forever lol
Dragon ball has so much fucking random content you could pull from at any time. Dragon balls universe is so fucking insane they have an entire different anime to pull from at any time

The concept of the tuffles is underrated. Tge onmy known tuffles are Hatchiyack & Baby

I love this era of Dragon ball z animation ❤
As an anime OVA it's maybe a bit underwhelming. But as a video game tips video it went above and beyond.
When I clicked on this video, I didn't expect to see a detailed break down of all the different animators and their styles. I admire your dedication. :)
It's crazy that this is actually canon in Dragon Ball GT universe cause that fake Dr.Gero looking character was part of the reason why Super Android 17 happened, lol XD
I watched all TV series, all movies, and the remake of this too cause it was in Raging Blast 2 (didn't knew this was a remake til now too), but I didn't watched any other OVA, so that always confused me in GT since I didn't knew enough of the fake Dr.Gero I felt like. Lol XD
Nicely reworked and creatively implemented within the limitations of the original material's low resolution! I have a Playdia and both games in my collection, but unfortunately, I don't have a proper solution for digitizing them. The newest RetroTINK would probably be the best option, but that's not financially feasible at the moment. I remember years ago someone created a sort of DVD port for the first Playdia game disc-it must have been a lot of work. It's also a shame that no one has tackled the potential emulation of the Playdia console yet, as it would at least make the already existing digital material accessible. Although, it surely won't have a great native resolution anyway, given the roughly 700MB size.
Finished the Famicom game of this several times and I really love how powerful is Hatchiyak. Also the special moves are easy to recover as long as you knew the symbols of each attack.
didn't know there were alternative scenes. might look em up sometime
yeah there were quiet a few
Great video, this type of stuff is so interesting to me haha
thank ya!!
3:23: "No, Gohan. You're supposed to transform when you give a strong punch, not turning off."
That was the first and only 1 of two times Freeza was back in Dragon Ball Z anime. Facts!
Freeza wasn’t dead in the beginning of Android arc, so he never left arguably. But even then, it’s the second and 1 of 3. That served a purely narrative purpose to show how strong Trunks is and how much stronger the Androids will be.
Lol great timing, I just watched this the other day. It's not the greatest bit of Dragon Ball media but it does have its moments, I too enjoyed the bit with the red henchman and Piccolo looking absolutely dumbfounded. (Also Popo Poco Volcano is a mistranslation/typo, it should be Poco Poco, not that this is important lore or anything lol)
ahhh that choice in name makes a lil more sense now! and yeah it really sits in the middle for me, defs not the worst thing but considering the staff list it coulda been a lot more
i actually liked that when in super saiyan form they have pupils
ye its cool 👍
I fucking love how I have no eye for any of this, but there are people like you who can pick out who drew which frame of an anime, based on like an ear lobe shape. That's wild and impressive and just shows how someone who spend years of their lives on their own passion can know basically nothing of another's passion, even though they both relate to the same subject (dbz in this case).
Idk. We're all nerds in some way, and I love it.
The Animation is master piece
Its like the whole DB staff got bored one week and decided to create while on powerful psychedelics 😂
My friend created an English 5.1 dub of this for his final project in recording school. I wish I still had a copy.
I loved this OVA despite heard non good critics about it, not the best DB movie by far but I enjoyed it like a kid even in my 36! 😃magic nostalgy. I loved it specially for the topic of Tsufurus and the dark vibes on it, the last battle with Hatchiyack with that gloomy music was very enjoyable for me 🔥
Same, it really has a dark atmosphere that hasn't been repeated since.
It was remade and sold with Raging Blast 2, and the villain has a spotlight on the box.
I’m SHOCKED I never heard of this. I’m a fiend when it comes to collecting dbz cels so I’m glad I never found a cel from this OVA because I nEVER would have found this to be a match 😅
Why does toei treat dragon ball so bad when it’s one of its greatest anime’s?
Because most of the casual DB fans are dumb enough to buy literally anything from Toei even if the products were inferior and they don't care about good quality lol
Really nice presentation and editing :)
Wait, there was a DBZ OVA? I only knew about the DB OVA.
I remember watching this thing almost 20 years ago and being blown away by Yamamuro's art and animation in that small section. Yamamuro was always amazing to see, especially on the episodic format of the show (a Yamamuro episode right after an Ebisawa one was priceless). But in this OVA he stands out particularly well. Up until that point the art was fine and the animation quite limited. Then Yamamuro shows up and delivers the best at both.
Since we are at the topic of Dragon Ball rarities, are you aware of that telephone special? Don't know how it is called, the characters just pick up the phone to talk to the audience or something like that. There's a scene of Super Saiyan Goku fighting Cell. The art is absolute fire and I don't know who supervised that. Out of memory it seems to be Masaki Sato, but I could be wrong. Know anything about it?
sounds very familiar :) could you send me a link to the vid? would be keen to give it a look
I remember that, Goku goes back in time with Trunks, Gohan and Krillin and they go back to whem Goku was a kid. At least thats part of the special.
Yeah I know about that one it’s called "Dragon Ball Z: Gather Together! Goku's World" released by Bandai for the terebikko phone game interactive play vhs console game system in the year of 92.
ahh that one. for the first half Naotoshi Shida seems to animate a lot of it (guessing he was AD as well). the 2nd half is supervised by Naoki Miyahara. that particular fight of Cell is animated by Tetsuya Numako with very heavy corrections by Miyahara.

10:04 shimanuki vegeta frame forgot that vegeta’s suit goes halfway up his neck.
I remember this! It even had a modern remake! Good times watching on the VHS ✨💖 And I couldn't forget about Goku's goofy run on the ice! That was the most memorable scene, at least for me 😂
I waited forever for funamation to get their hands on this one. I remember seeing it in Mexico and being awe that I was finally able to see it 😅
Just my own personal head canon but @11:33 I believe Vegeta is saying this because the Tuffles forced the Saiyans to live out in the wastelands of Planet Plant since the Saiyans were a barbaric warrior race and didn’t want to intergrate with them which eventually led King Vegeta III to gather an army of Saiyans to wipe out the Tuffles and take over the Planet renaming it after himself.
That's a pre good explanation! This ova doesn't actually ever show where the saiyans exactly lived which is odd. It does in the original backstory from Z ofc, although Koyama's new take in this ova does retcon parts of that original episode. So I'm unsure if he still had details like where they lived in mind when he wrote this or if he treated this as something entirely new. He definitely kept parts like the Saiyans rampaging as ape's so it's possible.
My guess is it wasn’t poor living conditions. Saiyans are kind of Spartan and can handle harsh conditions. It would make more sense if the Saiyans found out the Tuffles were developing Baby, a hive mind virus that they intended to release in the Saiyan population and make them into a compliant slave race ruled by a Tuffle hive mind.
It just makes sense if the Tuffles weren’t as innocent as they pretend. Their bodies were weak but their science was strong, so they planned to use their science to obtain powerful slaves who would make their lives easier. They wouldn’t even have to feel bad about it considering how violent the Saiyans were by nature. Really Baby would be doing them a favor, harnessing their strength for the greater good!
In the defense of Z and GT them re using villians in movies are basically events that never took place and made more sense when Jenemba was literally ripping the fabric of reality apart and left hell opened like wound where as Super took R-F and BOZ which were Z movies and ran with idea of not only bringing back Frieza 4th time but making him as strong as he is after being one shotted by the weakest super saiyan which was Trunks at the time. Super seems to go in on going in aleady used themes and concepts just to bring a story full circle which is why mow Frieza (due to plot) is once again the strongest Villian in DB since he has a new colour based form which is vaguely explained.
10:23 I never saw the OVA but I swear I saw the setting In a dream
Shame you didn't go through the rest of the footage like the gohan punches, frieza's discs destroying buildings and trunks. His barrier that makes nosense. Not to mention the scenes where the heroes fail and game over.
The funny animated dragon that goku takes the ring from it's nose, when he rescues the fairy.
Even if the animators are the same the comments were really funny.
It was the only time Freezer returned besides him returning as Mecha Freezer against Trunks.
the fixation on who drew which scene was a bit distracting.
Not alone was it distracting it didn't really add to the weird story of this OVA. It's interesting stuff but it really felt very misplaced and disconnected from the video itself
So glad someone's taking about this because I really thought most of this ova was lost media
Maybe a bit unrelated to the animation itself but it’s interesting to note since this ova never came out on a dvd, it had to be recorded on broadcast which looks a lot closer to the cels (color wise) than the dvds like dragon box and orange bricks. Side note: Every time I come back your vids keep getting more well produced, you’ve come a long way ❤

Plan to Eradicate the SUPER Saiyans was the remake
I agree that this OVA should have been yet another little mini arc (although none of the movie characters are canon, so the anime staff instead would have had to bring back like, the Ginyus or Nappa and Raditz), then we could have seen the whole cool things like the adventures in space and meeting the sea god (and instead of Turles appearing to fight it, if Broly wasn't available, why not have Krillin or heck, use Yamcha, Tenshinhan or Chaozu since they pretty much had hadn't done much of anything after being on Kaiou's planet during the Frieza saga)? Shimanuki is a decent animator from what I've seen, and his corrections are far better than Uchiyama's wretched ones.
I'd also be interested to see your thoughts on "Dragon Ball Z: Atsumare! Gokū Wārudo" (translating to "Gather Together! Goku's World"), that Terebikko video game, the Terebikko being a Japanese interactive VHS console game system that was like an interactive ☎toy, and it came with 30 minute VHS tapes, Dragon Ball Z having one of them (this one taking place in the Cell arc). It was also low budget animation wise, and not too high on action/fight scenes.

4:32 thumb looks to be on the right side of the fist it just looks slightly odd. perhaps if the elbow was slightly bent and the wrist turned a bit more towards the character it wouldnt feel as unnatural. otherwise if i would throw my hand straight in the air it would probably be wrist forward not backward.
The clips in your video are the best quality I've ever seen this in. Where/how did you get it?
Also, I never understood why this OVA always seemed so...dark, grey, and...old looking, compared to the show. Especially after learning that some of the heavyweights made this.
who tf was the guy with gems on his face?
The OVA is a weird part of Dragon Ball history, especially since beyond the Saiyan/Tuffle lore, it seldom, if ever gets discussed in the fandom, even in comparison to when GT basically re-used the same concepts. In fact, the OVA feels like a prototype for GT when you really look at it, though whether GT did it better is debatable.
Don't look at stills when saying bad animation. You have to see the complete work
where was i calling stills bad animation?
This is high level.
I never knew about the alternative endings 😳
