Flash Hobby D3530EVO/36 Outrunner Review (In a crawler)

  • Hi guys,
These little Flash Hobby outrunner motors work pretty well in a crawler despite being marketed for airplanes. I've been using a Hobbywing 10BL120 sensored version ESC and the combo works well. Lower KV versions work better with Axial clone transmission setups and I would expect the higher KV versions to work better with something like a Redcat Gen 8 that is geared lower where you can get away with the big 13t 5mm shaft pinion. Lower than 13t pinions will run you more money in a 5mm shaft size.
I've only run one torture test so far running as slow as the wheels can spin on approx 45 degree inclined cardboard surface and nothing got over 50 degrees Celsius. I glued the magnets in mine with super glue and baking soda to try to avoid magnets coming loose (a fairly common failing in motors not designed for crawler use).

Do you drive to wrench or do you wrench to drive?

Thanks. Definitely a cheaper way to give it a try. There are also BLHeli escs that you can program (There's a BL Heli firmware port for crawlers) but I haven't been able to find a good enough deal on one I'm sure actually works

Why not just pay a couple more bucks for the Crawler outrunners that they sell.. no need for 5mm pinions and already designed for use in crawlers.

Buy what you want, like I said, a Holmes is 4x the price, not a couple of bucks more. Chinese "Crawler" outrunners aren't known for being awesome

How hard is it to mount and mesh pinions with a 5mm shaft

Same as 3.xmm, you just need to grind a flat spot on the shaft for the grub screw with a moto tool. 32p pinions are common, 48p seem to be mostly over 20t which bumps the gearing up probably too much for most crawlers. Mesh and whatnot is the same as with any other motor.
