Some additional dialogue comparisons with Sten vs Taash:
    Veilguard:
*Taash:* Here you go. Shathann said to eat the fruit before it spoils
*Karash:* I like the cookies better.
*Taash:* Everyone likes the cookies better.
*Karash:* I'll eat the fruit. Thank you Evataash.
*Taash:* Panahedan. I'll see you soon.
    Origins:
*Warden:* [As a Grey Warden, I demand to be brought to the tower.]
*Caroll:* You're a Grey Warden are you? Prove it.
*Warden:* [I don't have to prove anything to you.]
*Caroll:* So I'm not good enough for you? Fine. See if you get into the tower on your own then.
*Warden:* [Can't we work something out?]
*Caroll:* Hmm... I don't know. Y'know, I am feeling a little peckish, though.
*Warden:* [You want me to feed you?]
*Sten:* Parshaara! Here! Munch on these if you like.
    *Caroll:* Oooh, cookies!
*Sten:* I am content to part with them if it saves us from this fool.
    *Warden:* [Where'd you get those?]
*Sten:* There was a child--a fat slovenly thing, in the last village we passed. I relieved him of these confections, he didn't need more.
*Warden:* [You stole cookies from a child?]
    *Sten:* For his own good.
    ----
    Veilguard:
*Rook:* I'd appreciate it if you avoided fencing any of the elven artifacts unless Bellara tells you it's okay.
*Taash:* Don't worry about that. The Lords of Fortune aren't thieves.
*Rook:* I mean... Aren't you though?
*Taash:* Nah, anything we hunt is salvage. Old forgotten ruins and crap. And we make sure we're not screwing over a culture that lost it.
    Origins:
*Alistair:* So I suppose once I could end up in negotiations with the Qunari one day.
*Sten:* My people do not negotiate.
*Alistair:* What do you mean? They negotiated a peace treaty after the war, and as far as I know they've kept to its terms.
*Sten:* They signed a piece of paper. But only because they knew that you believed in it.
*Alistair:* And what is the difference between that and negotiating?
*Sten:* They stopped fighting for their own reasons. And they will resume it again, one day. The agreement means nothing to them.
*Alistair:* But I thought you said your people believed in honor.
*Sten:* They do. The honor of the Qunari is what will bring our warships back to your shores.
    -----
    Veilguard:
    *Rook:* Taash likes you.
    *Harding:* Rook!
*Rook:* What? It's true! Ask them.
*Taash:* You're really nice. And.. um..you smell good.
    *Harding:* oh! Thank you?
*Taash:* _Really_ good! [wheezy gurgle of attraction]
*Rook:* Please get there faster Harding...
    Origins:
*Morrigan:* So have you changed your mind, Sten? I dream about you and I, if you must know.
*Sten:* Don't you belong to the Grey Warden?
*Morrigan:* In fact I belong to no one. And he would not mind, I am certain.
*Sten:* You would, even were I interested in a small thing like you. The Qunari act is... unpleasant.
*Morrigan:* Unpleasant? Unpleasant how? Now I really am interested.
    *Sten:* Deadly.
*Morrigan:* And what if I didn't mind? I enjoy a little... animation.
Sten: You'd be less animated afterward.
*Morrigan:* It sounds as if I am arousing your passions already, my dear Sten.
*Sten:* Parshaara. Why do you pester me?
*Morrigan:* (Chuckles) Because 'tis amusing, that is why.
    ───────
    Veilguard:
*Emmrich:* Rook! Excellent! We could use a second, _sober_ voice!
    *Taash:* I'm not drunk - you're drunk!
*Emmrich:* It's a figure. Of. _Speech._
*Rook:* I was wondering when this would happen.
    *Emmrich:* I.. don't follow
*Rook:* You two didn't seem to be bonding.
*Taash:* I need one of his little needle things to dig some crap out of my armor. Death Mage won't give me one.
*Emmrich:* First, a bone threader is an extremely delicate instrument. Second, it's _Emmrich,_ Taash. My name is Emmrich. Not "Death Mage." Not "Corpse Guy." Not... I won't repeat the rest.
*Taash:* What? You _are_ a death mage.
*Emmrich:* Why are all my attempts to converse with you met with scorn? What have I done to you, Taash?
*Taash:* You talk about corpses too much!
    *Emmrich:* It's a rich topic!
*Taash:* No! Corpses are messed up! They used to have people in em!
*Taash:* You make them move like they are alive. But they smell wrong and they move wrong and none of it is okay!
    *Emmrich:* ....oh.
    Origins:
    *Sten:* Draw your weapon.
*Alistair:* Are you talking to me?
    *Sten:* Your weapon. Draw it.
*Alistair:* Why? Are we under attack?
*Sten:* I want to see what you can do.
*Alistair:* You want to fight me? Just like that?
*Sten:* You are a Grey Warden. How are you going to face an archdemon if you cannot face me?
*Alistair:* It is a mystery, I'll admit.
*Sten:* I should let your weakness damn us all? Draw your sword. I'll try not to injure you permanently.
*Alistair:* I don't have to prove anything to you. Forget it.
*Sten:* So you do have a spine. Pity you don't use it.
    ------------
*Taash:* are you trying to have sex with me?
*Rook:* Wow.. in my daydreams this is where you'd.. lean over me and slap the wall.
*Taash:* [Slaps wall] Quick. Think about us having sex.
    Origins:
*Morrigan:* You seem so deep in thought, my dear Sten. Thinking of me, perhaps? The two of us, together at last?
    *Sten:* Yes.
*Morrigan:* I... what did you say?
*Sten:* You will need armor, I think. And a helmet. And something to bite down on. How strong are human teeth?
*Morrigan:* How strong are my teeth?
*Sten:* Qunari teeth can bite through leather, wood, even metal given time. Which reminds me, I may try to nuzzle.
    *Morrigan:* Nuzzle?
*Sten:* If that happens, you'll need an iron pry bar. Heat it in a fire, first, or it may not get my attention.
*Morrigan:* Perhaps it would be better if we did not proceed.
*Sten:* Are you certain? If it will satisfy your curiosity...
*Morrigan:* Yes. Yes, I think it is best.
    --------
    Veilguard:
    *Taash:* So I'm non-binary.
    *Shathann:* what does that mean?
*Taash:* It means I don't feel like a man or a woman.
*Shathann:* If you are neither a man nor a woman... Than what _are_ you?
*Taash:* Non-binary. I just said. And I'm going to use "they" instead of "she" from now on.
*Shathann:* If this is because I have criticized your dress or your manners--
    *Taash:* It isn't!
*Shathann:* Under the Qun the term for one whose gender does not match the one given to them at birth is "aqun-athlok." Perhaps you are like that?
*Taash:* why do you have to keep picking at it? Why can't you just be happy for me?!
    Origins:
*Sten:* I don't understand. You look like a woman.
*Female Warden:* [I am a woman.]
*Sten:* You are a grey warden. So it follows that you _can't_ be a woman.
    *Warden:* [Why not?]
*Sten:* Women are priests, artisans, shopkeepers, or farmers. They don't fight.
*Warden:* [That's not a universal truth. Some women fight.]
*Sten:* Why would women ever wish to be men? That makes no sense.
*Warden:* [They don't wish to be men. They wish to be women who fight.]
*Sten:* Do they also wish to live on the moon? That's as attainable.
    *Warden:* [I'm a woman, and I'm fighting.]
*Sten:* One of those things _can't_ be true. A person is born: Qunari, or human, or elven, or dwarf. He doesn't choose that. The size of his hands, whether he is clever or foolish, the land he comes from, the color of his hair: these are beyond his control. We do not choose, we simply are.
*Warden:* [But a person can choose what to do.]
    *Sten:* can they? We'll see.
    Alt:
    *Sten:* Why are you here?
    *Wynne:* I beg your pardon?
*Sten:* Women are artisans, or merchants. Or farmers, though you don't seem particularly... earthy. They have no place in war.
*Wynne:* I can't even begin to tell you what's wrong with that idea.
*Sten:* It is not done. There is no more to it.
*Wynne:* I do not understand. Do the Qunari have no female mages? No female warriors?
*Sten:* Of course not. Why would our women wish to be men?
*Wynne:* Do you believe I wish to be a man?
*Sten:* You cannot wish to be a man. It will lead you only to frustration.
*Wynne:* Hmm. I believe this discussion does the same. Let us speak no more of it, Sten.
    *Sten:* As you wish.
    Additional:
*Zevran:* "Sten", it's not a name is it?
*Sten:* Do you always begin conversations this way?
*Zevran:* It's your rank is it not? I've met a few Qunari in Antiva you know. Not much for conversation but some of them were quite easy on the eyes.
    *Sten:* Those are not Qunari.
*Zevran:* No? They are what then, very large dwarves with comical accents?
*Sten:* They wear the faces of Qunari but they are Tal'vashoth, fiends of Seheron. They have abandoned the Qun.
*Zevran:* With titles like your own though, which makes me curious. What is your real name then?
    *Sten:* "Sten" is enough.
*Zevran:* But it is not your name.
*Sten:* It is who I am.

this is the truth that LGBT don't wish to acknowledge. they don't believe it themselves, if they feel like misgendering is equal to denying their existence. my sister, who is an uber lefty, and has come out as nonbinary and says she is pansexual, has said as much to me before. my thing is, if someone tried to say i was gay, or called me a woman, i'd just laugh at them. it would not bother me at all, because i know 100% who i am. there are legit trans people, like Blaire White for example. she is the same. if someone calls here a dude, she doesn't care. and i have no problem calling her a she, because she looks like a she, and clearly believes it herself. she is comfortable and confident in her identity. but if you don't believe it yourself, don't expect me to believe it for you, and constantly affirm you so your glass of an identity doesn't shatter up against reality.
the fact is, if you truly believe it is who you are, you won't care what other people think, or call you. you have never seen a cis gendered person get mad at being called the opposite gender. in our eyes, it's just a ridiculous and hilarious notion...

More than that, he asked every woman in the party (excluding Shale for obvious reasons), including the PC. It's even a sort of harassment at some point. And he do not stand back because they answer, far from it.
The trans possibility introduced in DAI was already a mistake, whatever bending of the lore they did. It was clear back then than the qun isn't the kind of philosophy to deny the obvious.

    • @GuiPaim

@@garroshhellscream594 I disagree. Sten is the one who says he was wrong afterwards, to the warden. That through your actions you proved youserlf a warrior worthy of being in the beresaad. Even though you lost your destiny, this was not a bad thing.
I think they wanted the qunari to not use
What I like about the qunari is that they were harsh, but at the same time, they said they were wrong when you proved it. Like, the Arishok asks Hawke what they would do in his place about the elves. You can say you would do the same as him.

    • @SangAsura222
      @SangAsura222 Місяць тому +160

@@garroshhellscream594 I don’t think Sten’s behavior qualifies as harassment. What you’re interpreting as harassment is better understood as cultural confusion and bluntness, which is consistent with his character and the Qunari worldview. Harassment implies malicious intent or repeated behavior aimed at discomforting someone, and Sten’s questions don’t fall into that category.
Sten is a product of the Qunari culture, where roles are rigidly defined, and women as warriors are virtually unheard of. His questioning is a reflection of that worldview-he’s trying to make sense of what he sees as an anomaly, not belittle the women in the party. His bluntness can come across as abrasive, sure, but that’s part of who he is as a Qunari.
Most importantly, Sten demonstrates growth. When the Warden or other women in the party prove their worth through their actions, he doesn’t double down on his assumptions. Instead, he admits he was wrong and acknowledges their skill and honor. This kind of humility is rare in a character like Sten and shows that his questioning wasn’t harassment-it was a way for him to grapple with his rigid worldview being challenged.
It’s also worth noting that Dragon Age: Origins uses moments like this to highlight cultural clashes, and Sten’s arc reflects the Qunari’s blend of pragmatism and rigidity. His eventual respect for the Warden or other female warriors underscores that he values strength and purpose over preconceived notions. That’s a far cry from harassment-it’s a story of personal growth.

you said that this was lacking empathy and i couldn't disagree more.
Empathy requires "the ability to understand and share the feelings of another"
Sten fully understood not just from taash's perspective, but also from the perspective of the qun.
taash has lost the way and has been looking inward for answers they themselves do not have
(a literal self made echo chamber with room for only one voice) and then when faced with an outside answer that didn't immidetly validate their feelings, they choose to lash out like a teenager going through puberty, irrational and emotional without logic or rhetoric (you know...the things the Qunari are known for)
Problems that could be solved with a 10 min conversation are completely blown out of proportions by a lack in accountability and self awareness(typical of the modern generations of 2024)
as well as by abandoning the qun, and then being confused as to why they no longer feel like they "belong". its a literal self-imposed confusion and self consuming mindset that a lot of people (not just trans) suffer from today due to the echo chamber that is the internet.
"They" (no pun intended) really could have explored this more, but likely would have been labeled some kind of "phobe" for tying to apply logic/rhetoric to a trans character.
(Because accountability and objectivity based in logic and rhetoric that doesn't immidetly validate a persons subjective feelings, makes you a "phobe" nowadays)

@@XenolithialThe difference is that Iron Bull is meant to be an oddball and a black sheep amongst the Qunari. His personal quest either takes him back to the Qun or tips him over the edge to Tal-vashoth.
Taash is just straight up a terrible character and an opportunity for the writer to self-insert.

    • @Xenolithial
      @Xenolithial Місяць тому +33

@@deadchivalry1698 A lot of people say that but tbh I think Iron Bull was more damaging because he was used to set the standard that paved the way for the trainwreck that is Taash.
He turned Qunari reproduction from a highly regimented process that can be and often is fatal - particularly to other races - and just made it... A night when a safe word and aftercare may be in order.
He became the gateway that retconned every conversation Sten had regarding the roles of women and men in the Qunari - which is tied into the very fabric of how that entire society is structured
He claimed to be a spy and yet the Arishok outright says that operating from the shadows is the mark of someone too weak to stand before their enemy. Which doesn't mean the Qunari don't have spies necessarily, but somehow I doubt they're anything like how he was presented. And the Qunari would be far more likely to use a viddathari of another race since they would blend in far better for such a task I imagine, but that may just be my headcanon
And these are just a few of the things I remember.
And these are things that aren't really linked to his individual personality. But they torch the established Qunari culture just the same. Much like how Veilguard torched Fereldan I suppose.
His personality is extremely bizarre for a person raised under the Qun. And that is the only part that could be explained by him becoming Tal-Vashoth.
He should have been Tal-Vashoth from the beginning. He'd have been the most cavalier one we've ever encountered, but it would have fixed a lot of these issues.
And they could still have him struggle with his decision to return to the Qun or remain Tal-Vashoth. Though had he returned I imagine it would be similar to Fenris' outcome when he returns to Danarius.

Sten is a warrior of the Beresaad, the vanguard of the Qunari people. He is a stoic and disciplined man with a strong code of ethics, and the way he treats others depends on whether or not they have his respect, which he does not give easily. He is not a typical Qunari as he was born without horns. As with all Qunari appellations, "Sten" is not a name but a rank.

You know... if someone had told me this character was going to be introduced in DA:TV, I have to say this is exactly what I would have pictured it to look like. BTW, Bioware, the word "Binary" didn't exist until the digital age, so why would anyone in the game's entire reality even have that word? Does the character also talk about how it hates Trump?

    THANK YOU!
This video was Refreshing and Amusing at the same time!
A funny remind how Qunari should be. Taash is more of a Tal-Vashoth.
The ending was priceless... "it needs you to stop being a burden".
Roasted from the beginning to the end of this conversation!
This dialogue should be presented to woke people.

The older I get, the more I love the Qunari and their culture, their logic and their way of thinking. Honestly, I think among all other races in DA, none comes closer to figuring life out than them. I especially enjoy all, and I mean all dialogues with the Arishok in DA2.

    Well done!
The Qun requires you to be disciplined and stay in the role given to you. In most cases the tamasrans decide what you are going to be. Your role is also most of your identity. This is how they maintain order in their society.
People can think what they will about the ideology itself, but that’s how it is. It’s an interesting part of Dragon Age, and one of the most interesting parts of Dragon Age 2.

This is a banger of an edit, but its also spitting some serious facts about self-indulgence and self-made chaos.
All this nonsense about identity has people twisted up trying to find the right words or monikers to explain themselves.
We had this figured out in the 1990s with every other movie and show shouting, "Be Yourself!" to the high heavens, now people need everyone to play along and kiss their ass.

    Perfect!
I was so confused over her strong act when she talked with her mother. I felt she actually tried, thrue their cultures point of view, to understand her daughter, while taash just had a 12y olds fit of rage more or less. THIS would have been so much better! Taashs dialog would have been ok while you would atleast get the feeling that they still respected the Qunari and their culture when they made the game.
