Just installed mine today without the 3D printed pieces, took my time, and laid the screen very square to the body. Turned out amazing. I’m blown away. Makes the GBC playable again in 2021 and then some. Totally worth it and the time to install it. Soldering was the easiest part. Carving body took time.
The detail on this installation is excellent and this mod looks great. The screen difference is immaculate! Definitely something I'll be on the lookout for.
I have the Q5 screen and you can utilize the battery mode. You need solder in a 4th wire to battery pad on the screen board and to the positive terminal battery just above the a/b button. It displays the battery level in the upper right hand corner
Just installed mine today. It’s great. Can you turn off battery level indicator if wanted? Edit. Just looked in the menu. You can. Looks like I’ll be opening her up again tomorrow
How did the battery mode work out? I'm curious what kind of voltages it is set to for its range. As I would like to utilize this for a gameboy color with a lipo battery installed.
i'm new to modding stuff but wanted to mod an old gb color for my partner (we are collectors but haven't gotten into reshelling and stuff yet) for their birthday. this was super super helpful and made it 100% accessible for a beginner thank you so much :-))
Looking to buy a customisable gbc. Do you have any recommendations on a reliable/reputable seller? REALLY looking for somewhere and have had zero luck. Any Info would be appreciated.
Hey, i know this video is a bit old and i dont know if you or anybody else will see this comment. I just wanted to say that if your having power draw issues with your NiMH batteries, you can use NiZn batteries in conjuction or byselves to improve performance. The NiZn batteries are available on Amazon and Ebay from a few brands to pick from. They perform great and are rechargable. They even sell Lithium AA batteries, but they dont have as much upfront power like the NiZn.
I love how incredibly clean these mod videos are. So satisfying to see you put the extra effort when modifying the shell especially, some people do it so poorly and they look so janky afterwards.
I used this guide and it worked great. Only thing you didn't do and I suggest people do, is wire up the BATT test pads too, so you can have the battery level indicator working - you said it's not a feature on this mod, but it actually is. Thank you again!
Great that the GBC is finally getting a nice IPS kit that doesn't sacrifice screen size. Will definatly look into getting one of these. Great guide as always sir, it's always good as a modder to see how others tackle these installs and I too like the knife scoring technique. Gives the best cuts with minimal tidy up :)
Put this exact kit in my GBC build last week. I love it. Anyone looking for an IPS kit, this is the one for you. I bought it along with a precut shell so I wouldn't have to do much modification. Although I did need to take a little more off the edges of the viewing area. You were able to still see some of the edges with the glass screen installed. My kit didn't come with those 3D printed brackets. So I had to do it eyeball it. But I fixed it and it looks amazing now. Edit: forgot to mention. You're going to hate those touch pads. They are extremely sensitive. Even when I know I haven't touched the area, I find my brightness is higher than what I've set it at. I plan on going back in and just taking wire cutters and removing them. You can do everything from the OSD. The touchpads are really only for those who can't solider.
I don't know, I am so used to them now that I very rarely touch them by accident, and if it does happen then it's just a few touches to put it back to normal. I do have the menu working, but it's a bit fiddly to use so happy to have the sensors. Could probably live without the left - colour tint - one though

I will say though, where I did struggle the most was cutting the shell without the 3d printed outline. I dont own a 3d printer, so I had to use the glass screens sticker outline and use a dremmel to sand it down because I couldn't cut in a straight line. All in all it came out really nice and is totally worth the effort.
Your channel is my favorite modding channel. The quality of your work is unbelievable. I just followed your tutorial to do my own -- those little wires are killer to solder, lol. This was a very well-made video and THANK YOU for showing the fact that pixel mode can be turned on with the touch sensor without soldering! That is HUGE!!! I was looking everywhere to find this out!!!! Your style is so concise and thorough!
Really great kit! Something else to do before putting the insulating film onto the board is wiring the BAT port to the positive battery terminal and the GND port to the negative terminal so that the built-in battery monitor will work. My kit came with 4 wires and one cut about in half reached A and B so I was able to get everything wired up easily
Theres alot of gameboy modders on youtube, but you are heads and tails above them. Incredible detail and work ethic. Thank you for your videos can't wait to see how large your viewership will grow.
I was about to say this too. But you already mentioned the problem 👍 and this counts for every rechargeable aa and aaa ni-mh batteries for sure. As far as I know also for other rechargeable batteries.
is an amazing mod, i started a retro handheld restoration bussisness in my country and i got a ton of those kits, basically i can play tetris all day and pokemon in this amazing high quality product!
For anyone trying to get the battery monitor to work. You need to run a wire from BATT on the video board to the Positive battery terminal. You also need to run a wire from the GND on the video board to the Negative battery terminal.
Just did this mod yesterday! It was my first time ever opening a gameboy, so I was nervous I’d screw it up somehow. The mod worked perfectly though! Thanks for the awesome video Macho Nacho!

Once you get the new screen in plus the PCB and ribbon cable in there I find that it makes putting the motherboard back in a bit of a squeeze, I can see in your video around 10:30 as your screwing down the motherboard that its lifting very slightly in the top half. How do you minimize this? Because I'm noticing that when I put the shell back on it affects things like the volume wheel and the power switch.

Thank you Nacho Macho for guiding me with the step my steps necessary to complete this mod. I skipped soldering as I don’t have experience but everything else worked well. My replacement Pokémon shell does not sit flush at the end but it’s okay.
About the Eneloop problem: It Probably has to do with NiMh Batteries having 1.2V instead of 1.5V from a fresh Alkaline one. (This will also mean that it won‘t work when the disposable Batteries are already drained to 1.2 or lower) There are Lithium Ion AAs that output 1.5V for devices (or in this case combinations) that need more Voltage.
I took a break from the GBC modding community for a few years (got married had some kids etc.) I’ve recently started browsing around again and I can’t believe how far we’ve come! When I left there were pretty much only front light GBA mods and the bennvenn stuff. I think it’s finally time to start a new project!
Something of note that might be useful is that you can actually buy lithium-ion rechargeable batteries in AA form factor. These will run at 1.5V almost their entire duration, meaning that you'll always be able to power flash carts and still be able to recharge your batteries. The only problem is you'll have trouble figuring out just when they're getting low until it's very nearly dead, so you have to watch out for that. You'll also probably need a charger specific to them. IKEA LADDAs and Eneloop Pros will usually work fine as long as they're more close to fully charged (they have more capacity than standard eneloops and LADDAs are cheaper) or you have a newer flash cart, since the newer ones use less power. This mod is lovely, about the same size as the Game Boy Pocket's stock LCD, and the pixel grid effect is excellent. Also, a use for the color palette toggle is if you want to play a regular Game Boy game on your GBC, but you don't like the predetermined palette or any of the palettes you get from holding directions and buttons at startup.
Thank you for the tips on the batteries. Will def look into that! Also, that is a great point I hadn’t thought about playing regular gb games, the pallet would certainly be useful for that! Cheers!
Another fantastic review. I plan on buying this kit eventually. If you plan on replacing your aging Eneloop batteries, you may want to check out the Ladda 2450 mah batteries from Ikea. A four-pack is only $6.99 and they sell a cool charging book that holds 8 AA's or AAA's and you can leave the batteries in the book plugged in, as it turns off automatically. Highly recommended. Thanks again!
I already have the smaller ips screen and I don't think that the retro pixel mode it's an excuse to upgrade to this kit, neither the function to change colours, and I found the aspect ratio of the older one closest to the original, anyways great video, that was just my opinion, new sub! Keep it up 😊
I know that you added the part about the integer scale just for me. I ask like every video. XD PS: Watching you trip and modify an original pokemon GBC hurt me on a spiritual level. 😂 EDIT: I didn't realize that the shell was a reproduction? :0 That's cool.
I ordered the version that comes with a precut shell. I opted not to solder. However, one of the screws is now stripped as I tightened it too much when putting the shell back on. Wondering if there's a way to remove it should I need to open it again
To aadress your issue with the Everdrive: get Kentli PK5 rechargable Batteries, those are lipo's tweaked down from 3.7v to 1.5/cell, they deliver the Voltage you need :-)
Indeed it is a very good screen. I already have a version 2 ips screen. I don't know if it deserves it right now to change it. If didn't mod my GBC i would have installed it for sure. Another great video my friend! Really enjoyed it!
I just bought one because of your video I have never done anything like that before. Closest I have done is changed some game batteries. But Nothing ventured nothing gained!
@@MachoNachoProductions Put it together today, came out fairly well. I didn't cut the case enough on the right side. But it works and you can't really tell when it is on.
I like original size screens but as close as to the original experience as possible. But we getting old we going blind. And need bigger screens and backlit. 🤣
I picked up some Deleepow 1.5V lithium rechargeable AA batteries from Amazon. Since these are 1.5v instead of the Eneloop's 1.2V, they work great for stuff like this.
Great guide for the original QX XL. Just a FYI the new updated version does not have soldering to A&B and no longer has the OSD menu to adjust screen alignment which is... pants.

Thank you for the tips on the batteries. Will def look into that! Also, that is a great point I hadn’t thought about playing regular gb games, the pallet would certainly be useful for that! Cheers!
Was waiting for your video to pull the trigger.
I hope the video was helpful in helping you decide! Cheers!
That backlight looks stunning! Where can I get one?! An even better way to play Pokémon?! Count me in!
@@jaydickstein thank you
Another fantastic review.
I've done a few of these kits also but learned a few cool tricks for next time thanks for another awesome video.
Glad you enjoyed the video Matthew!
Another excellent video. I think the different palettes are for when people play DMG games on the Color.
Thanks Dan🙏! Agree, I think it’s a left over feature. Cheers!
XD
PS: Watching you trip and modify an original pokemon GBC hurt me on a spiritual level. 😂
EDIT: I didn't realize that the shell was a reproduction? :0 That's cool.
Great! Awesome upgrade. Tks for the class.
If someone made a front case that was already the right size I would buy this in a heartbeat :0
Hey buddy here is a case that works with this IPS kit. No cutting needed.
GBP FunnyPlaying Game Boy Pocket IPS Backlight Ready Shell Housing No Cut
you can already find those on aliexpress
I ordered the version that comes with a precut shell. I opted not to solder. However, one of the screws is now stripped as I tightened it too much when putting the shell back on. Wondering if there's a way to remove it should I need to open it again
Always good to see another upload featuring a Game Boy even if I do still prefer my DMG. Another interesting video Tito!
Thank you Makoy! Glad you enjoyed this one! Cheers dude!
Loving these build videos, keep up the great work.
Thank you 🙏! Will do!
To aadress your issue with the Everdrive: get Kentli PK5 rechargable Batteries, those are lipo's tweaked down from 3.7v to 1.5/cell, they deliver the Voltage you need :-)
Would the screen still work If you don’t sauter the A,B and Select?
reason of problem is ...
most rechargeable only provide 1.2V. alcaline provide 1.5V.
Good to know! Thank you! Cheers!
Just ordered the isp shell and v3 screen off handheld legends can't wait !
Indeed it is a very good screen. I already have a version 2 ips screen. I don't know if it deserves it right now to change it. If didn't mod my GBC i would have installed it for sure. Another great video my friend! Really enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it dude! Cheers!
The best mod for the GBC IMO. looks awesome Tito I finally just got all my parts from ali to do my sp mod. hope for the best.
Awesome dude! Best of luck! Cheers!
Thank you for the video! You convinced me. I've just ordered it 👍
Awesome!
Nice review, the battery issue maybe down to your rechargeable batteries being 1.2volts each rather than 1.5 of regular batteries
I just bought one because of your video I have never done anything like that before. Closest I have done is changed some game batteries. But Nothing ventured nothing gained!
I hope it turns out well! It’s a great screen! I love playing mine! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Put it together today, came out fairly well. I didn't cut the case enough on the right side. But it works and you can't really tell when it is on.
fantastic video as always, tito! you inspired me to pick up some old gba sps and give modding them a spin! itll be a fun project, i cant wait!
The game boy colour screen how you remembered it feeling when you was a kid.
Hopefully there will be a Boxypixel shell to fit this screen! That would be an instant buy.
I like original size screens but as close as to the original experience as possible. But we getting old we going blind. And need bigger screens and backlit. 🤣
😂
I picked up some Deleepow 1.5V lithium rechargeable AA batteries from Amazon. Since these are 1.5v instead of the Eneloop's 1.2V, they work great for stuff like this.
The Pokémon GBC is my favourite out of the ones I own, followed by the Australian "Ozzie" 2-tone transparent green & yellow
They need to start making aftermarket cases that fit these new screens. It only makes sense. The sooner, the better.
Great guide for the original QX XL. Just a FYI the new updated version does not have soldering to A&B and no longer has the OSD menu to adjust screen alignment which is... pants.
Where would I look for the newest version pls n thx
There are pads above the cartridge pins you can use to solder to. If you need a reference LMK I’ll send one. It looks better for clear shells
That’s be great! Would def be interested in knowing those pads! Cheers!
Great video as always. So, this mod can unleash his full potential on an original Gameboy or Gameboy pocket!
Thank you Rafael🙏! Very true!
