I used some techniques I learned from your channel (including my hand at soddering) and now I have a backlit, clean and new working Gameboy. It's a fun hobby I wish to try more of.
After finding your channel while searching how to resurrect my Grandmothers original Gameboy DMG after she passed, I found your tutorials and recommendations. Not only is my Grandmothers DMG in beautiful working condition, but now because of your channel and recommendations, it's screen is absolutely gorgeous as well. Thank you Tito for your great content!
Just successfully installed the new version of the Funnyplaying kit. It now has a clear plastic centering bracket that holds the screen nicely. The new kit also has a new ribbon cable, with a built in touch sensor and two soldering pads, for power and touch. Neither the touch sensor or the power and touch pads are used with the DMG kit. The select wheel: Pressing it up and down adjusts brightness, pressing it in will switch it to color palette mode, allowing you to pick between several color palettes, some that look like the original DMG green, and one that looks like the Game Boy Pocket screen, very nice selection.
With a new shell, it was quite hard to manage to have all the screws in, but I successfully have a DMG with brand new parts thanks to your video. Thank you so much!
You’re most welcome! That’s true, new shells don’t have threads for the screws which make them harder to screw in. Glad you successfully modded your DMG! Cheers!

drencoss no worries dude! It’s definitely a noticeably larger screen. The screen lens is just ever so slightly larger too. The OG DMG lcd didn’t fully fill out the screen lens. The screen lens on the FunnyPlaying almost seems a tad to small for the actual picture on the IPs. Cheers buddy!
I would actually use the foam gasket as the guide by putting it on and removing the middle and cutting from the inside by snipping the corners first, then scoring with the X-acto blade with the gasket on to make near perfect straight edges
Installed the FunnyPlaying V2 kit on my DMG, and I'm loving it. I just need to figure out why Im loosing sound when I screw the shell together too much. Thank you Jim! So glad you’re enjoying your modded DMG! The FunnyPlaying kit is fantastic! To answer your question about the speaker, I would double check the solder joints. Make sure they look good. This mod looks great! I prefer the RIPS mod a bit more though and really hoping this will push the cost down on RIPS kits in the future... hard to believe this one is over $80 with shipping :O
Or you could buy directly on their website, but you dont get the brackets, your choice funnyplaying.com/collections/product/products/dmg-retro-pixel-ips-lcd-kit
Both are great kits. You really can’t go wrong with either. As of right now the RIPs has the price advantage but I think the FunnyPlaying wins on features. Cheers!
@@kronos43 Yeah, usually resellers pull up the prices because they gave some extras, but I can assure I have buy more than 5 IPS on their site and It's the same (witouth brakets)
This is the only problem with modding the DMG, do you wait or do it now as things are always improving, I might just give it another 6 months and see what's out then, this version looks the best so far though!
Very true Makoy! This is a very fast moving mod scene. Things are always improving. My guess is that RIPS will release a V4. Who knows what awesome features it’ll include. Cheers buddy!
Macho Nacho Productions - I’m personally staying away from the RIPS kits. I was an early adopter and got the v1....the colors were not right and required modding the DMG, which then broke the “special” Pokemon pallets. I then got a few v2 kits cause it fixed this this, it then made the buttons completely unresponsive. From there I just held out until FunnyPlaying stepped in. The RIPS kits are using buyers as beta testers which is not ok with me.
Oki_Dingo agree, they were quite problematic. It would have been great if they held off until they had the V3 ready. I bought all of them as well so I know the struggle. The FunnyPlaying kit is great and the V3 is now at an acceptable place. I would say both a great kits now. Cheers buddy!
Great video! Currently waiting on my kit to fix after finding soldering the screen pins was unsuccessful. Just curious what kind of solder do you use? I'm completely new to it I can never seem to find an answer.
This is awesome - but I think I'm going to wait until a v2 inevitably comes out to fix those minor issues. Plus, I'd imagine Hand Held Legend / Retro Modding / Retro Six will start to offer pre-trimmed shells at some point. I think I can handle internal trimming - but trimming around the screen, any little imperfection would drive me nuts.
This looks absolutely like the better screen I don't like the retro pixel mode though looks like it washes it out alil bit. And the mode is glitched so why use it unless your a retro old timer lol.
Agree! It's my favorite IPS kit! I like having the option to use the Retro Pixel mode but find myself using the normal mode most of the time. Cheers buddy!
Just finished this MOD and it looks fantastic. Followed your video and it made it a breeze, so thank you. Bought the kit and the funny playing molded case that was already modified for this screen. The only thing missing were the stickers. Have any recommended sources for them?
to be perfectly honest, if the Analogue Pocket wasn't about to go up for pre-order. I would be purchasing this mod to upgrade from my RIPS V3. as it stands, I'm good with my V3 knowing I'm getting something even more wicked in a year or so. however only time will tell if I really got that much patience lmao.
I hear you dude! I really hope I can snag pre order for the analogue pocket. Looks amazing! Yeah these kits are always improving. Who know what awesome features new one will have. Cheers!
@@Derick350 Unfortunately no. I was told there is no way to adjust the picture. I ended up taking some black electrical tape and carefully "framing" the play screen. That took care of the light bleed. Nobody seems to notice except me... which is very unsatisfying... Good luck!
I bought a generic IPS V2 screen, then realised 'oh maybe I should've made sure it was the one that said "Funny Playing" on the ribbon cable, I did inspect pictures of the ribbon cable and it seemed like all the components were exactly the same, wish me luck!
I think you should be okay. I have a theory that all the IPS kits are made by the same manufacturer. I’ve used ‘clone’ kits before without any issues. Best of luck buddy! Cheers!
I wish the RIPS mod had a grid and a few more pallets but I prefer the original screen size. While It's nice to have a bigger screen, I can just put it in my Gameboy pocket and have the best of both worlds. That way it's true to size there.
@Macho Nacho Productions You said that the gameboy pocket ips kit has the artifact issues solved in a new version? Where did you get the info from? I asked funnyplaying for the DMG Kit and they said it very difficult to handle theres problems and that there is no fix soon.
Hey Maurice! I was going off of an Instagram post they made a little while ago. They said they had a firmware update which the first batch of ribbon cables didn’t have which I think was supposed to solve the issue. They said those who got the first batch could either send it in to get updated or receive a voucher for this kit. I opted for the voucher since the artifacts don’t bother me too much. Here’s the post, instagram.com/p/CA9I2TtnVXt/?igshid=fk8nwevtdiqj It’s actually pretty vague but I assumed it referenced the artifacts. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Thanks for the video. I didn’t know there was a difference between the RIPS and FunnyPlaying IPS kits for the DMG. I wonder if the GBA and GBC FunnyPlaying kits are different as well?
its a very nice IPS kit. I couldnt ever call it the best because it replaces half of the original console with a custom PCB. The best will be a kit that uses the original console! But thats just my opinion
HI there, I'm planning to mod my DMG with FP IPS retro pixel kit. Do you think I need to replace the original voltage regulator on the motherboard? Would the "Clean Power power supply voltage V2" from Retro Six add some benefits?,Or is just useless? I really want to make my DMG the best. thanks
My DMG with the FP IPS works great and I don’t have the clean power installed. I’m sure there are benefits but I am unsure exactly what they are. I hope that helps buddy.
I know man, I think the gaskets would be much better if they could use a weaker adhesive. Once it’s stuck, it’s very difficult to remove. That would be my one suggestion to FunnyPlaying. It would also be nice if they could develop and ship their own aligning brackets. Thanks for the comment! Cheers buddy!
yep, I mess up my gameboy pocket because of that, I didn't clear good enought the led hole cut and couldn't stick out the screen... The definetly need to ship the plastic brakets
I'm bidding on a pair of DMGs on eBay to do this and a case swap. I want to keep my near perfect original (minus where my dad wrote our last name in permanent marker on the back) as an original and find one that has... some wear to mod.
I'm not changing. I don't see bigger screen , lots o colors n the control wheel as selling points. IPS close to stock size . enough color and wheel control is fine. Only selling point if cheaper
At 7:13 you soldered an old Gameboy speaker to the new board, but if I ordered a new speaker and were to solder the red and black wires to the board, from this position which side would it connect?
After installing this mod, my speaker has a bit of a constant buzz. Would replacing the speaker with funnyplaying's dmg speaker fix this issue? Thanks for your videos!
I have v3 kit but not installed yet and I don't know what to do if install v3 or buy Funnyplaying 😫. I Love the bigger screen, maybe I also do gb pocket funnyplaying mod to play with bigger screen.
I think the V3 is a great kit. It’s a bit easier to install than the FunnyPlaying. To me, both are great, each with their distinct pros and cons. Cheers buddy!
Hey Tito quick question...in your opinion would you say enlarging the viewing window in your DMG shell is a necessity for this mod? I saw This Does Not Compute's review of this kit and he said he didn't enlarge the window and found it to be fine. What's your opinion?
You may be able to get away with it but I think it may cover a small sliver of the screen. The lens itself had a larger window. If you have a 3D printed bracket you could install it and see how it looks. I wouldn’t use the foam adhesive gasket it come with. Hope that helps. Best of luck!!
@@MachoNachoProductions that's true! Yes I'm planning on ordering it from HHL, but they don't seem to include a bracket. I have a buddy though that can print one for me so I think I'm going to try that. Good point though, I can just drop it in and see if the screen cutoff is significant. Thanks man!
Hi Mosiu! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a feature to change the color pallets in the same manner as the GBC. There are 36 different color backgrounds that the FunnyPlaying kit provides. I hope that answers your questions. Cheers!
Mine came with it as well. I believe it was included because the LCD and ribbon cable are the same as the GB Pocket which does use them. There is no need for them for the DMG mod. It probably would have been better if they did not include it. Cheers Xav!
wish i could just get the funnyplaying rgb modes on my ripsv3, I have a funnyplaying in my game boy pocket (AAAs dont give me enough playtime) and absolutely love the pallet selections but im honestly not looking for a bigger screen on my dmg due to a custom lens and prefer the wheel on the ripsv3 to whatever that weird fragile looking switch on the funnyplaying
I really love the pallets too on the funnyplaying. They are more muted and easier to look at. And I totally agree with the wheel being better than the toggle switch on the funnyplaying kit. The wheels has a better overall feel and is easier to use. Cheers!
I like the pallets and the button switch of this Funnyplaying kit but I have boring dots glitchs in Pokemon Yellow and Kirby's Dream Land even with Retropixels filter off. It's a dots like the dots glitchs have appers in the legend of zelda links awakening. Is this normal of this kit or I have a bad kit? My OSD Rips v4 kit does not have this horrible dots glitchs :(
That's a very good question! I haven't seen the Prestige shells from Hand held legend but I am assuming that you will still need to trim the window to fit the larger image of the FunnyPlaying IPS. The best thing to do would be to contact HHL via email, they are pretty responsive. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheers buddy!
I bought and installed the same kit. I noticed in Zelda links awakening of link is standing near the top few rows of the screen there is a flickering. Anyone else see this??
Maybe you can help me out? I installed this and it sometimes loads with a black screen, sometimes loads and plays normal. Do you think there is a loose ribbon cable somewhere? If so which one? When it does work its amazing, the bigger lens could be a touch larger also. Update it works perfect in another gameboy back I tested it with. Something going on with the rear of the gameboy.
Hmm that’s interesting, I wonder if there is any issues with power. The creep may not be getting all the power it needs to turn in the back light. I would make sure the battery contacts and the power switch are clean. I use deoxit for the power switch. Hope that helps! Best of luck! Cheers!
The power is on, the screen has power and is lighting up, just in black. I believe the rear of the gameboy just died, lol. It was working, now its not. Might be capacitors or something beyond my knowledge. I cleaned everything good and cant see any damage. So i just bought a working gameboy with lines in the screen to replace it. Kinda sad, because thats what I had when I started haha. Thanks for the response 👍🏼. The front half is perfect, so the mod is amazing!
Thinking about doing an IPS screen mod for me DMG cause I have two, one that’s pretty dirty and works but I can’t open it up due to an extremely stripped screw (btw any advice on that? lol) and another that kinda works but the screen is blank so I might do it on that one once I get the money for the mods I wanna do haha
It’s definitely a great mod, especially to do on a unit with a busted screen. As for the striped screw, it might be tough to get it out without damaging the shell. There are some tricks like potentially drilling it out but that may damage the shell around it (it’s a petty aggressive last chance sorta tactic). I’m sure there are some other clever ways. I’d google it. Best of luck buddy! Cheers!
There are plenty of Stripped screw tools you can buy out there we have one at my shop we experience plenty of stripped screws and sometimes sadly they are far too stripped and need a careful drilling
Macho Nacho Productions thanks yeah I probably will have to drill it, it’s stripped pretty badly but I’ll save that for the future lol. Also just noticed the hat you wear in your videos is there anywhere I can get one?
matt Marshall yeah I was thinking I would have to do that because I’ve tried every other method of trying to remove it and still nothing so if worse comes to worst I’ll probably have to do that in the future thank you!
I’m thinking of opening a small merch store at some point. Right now I just have the one lol. Thank you so much for your interest! I’ll definitely make an announcement when I do open a store. I may also try to gauge interested prior. I wasn’t sure if people actually noticed it. I’m glad you noticed it, thanks for letting me know dude! Cheers!

I really enjoy your high quality video’s thanks.
Thank you Joey! Glad you like them! Cheers!
Quick question? Now that the rips ips V5 is out how does it compare to this mod?
Once again all your content is tops! I have a DMG but it holds sentimental value and don’t know if i could ‘snip’ some plastic off!
If you can, I would definitely keep your DMG original and buy a cheap broken DMG from ebay or cragslist (usually the motherboard is fine, just the screens are damaged). And then you can mod the broken one. I like to have original unmodified consoles in my collection too! Cheers!
onasazi its worth it. I can see now lol
Greatly informative video, thanks!!
Got this coming from ebay, already installed on dmg
Great video thank you I did it to a DMG that bought and it works perfectly
Thank you! Awesome man, I really love this mod! Cheers!
i subscribed cuz i love the macho nacho intro
This mod looks great! I prefer the RIPS mod a bit more though and really hoping this will push the cost down on RIPS kits in the future... hard to believe this one is over $80 with shipping :O
Just curious why do you prefer the RIPS?
Or you could buy directly on their website, but you dont get the brackets, your choice funnyplaying.com/collections/product/products/dmg-retro-pixel-ips-lcd-kit
Both are great kits. You really can’t go wrong with either. As of right now the RIPs has the price advantage but I think the FunnyPlaying wins on features. Cheers!
@@jmsmoriarty holy shit, its way cheaper on their site than resellers. thanks for this!
Cheers buddy!
looks very good, now lets see hows the battery life compared to rips
Gonna have some tests coming up!
That’s a good idea! I agree, I’m sure a prettiness shell will be available eventually! A V2 kit would be nice as well! Cheers!
Cheers!
@ap_Maquina did you ever get your pocket ??
My screen is not centered in the viewing window. I bought a ips shell and bracket. Is there a way to adjust the picture on the screen?
Also having this problem. Did you figure out how to fix it?
@@Derick350 Unfortunately no. I was told there is no way to adjust the picture. I ended up taking some black electrical tape and carefully "framing" the play screen. That took care of the light bleed. Nobody seems to notice except me... which is very unsatisfying... Good luck!
This would great for me, but I think my DMG doesn’t work anymore 😢
can you do a video on the installation of the clean juice battery for the dmg i cant seem to find one . a how to video. thank you
I bought a generic IPS V2 screen, then realised 'oh maybe I should've made sure it was the one that said "Funny Playing" on the ribbon cable, I did inspect pictures of the ribbon cable and it seemed like all the components were exactly the same, wish me luck!
Very good point! The Pocket is a fantastic form factor (Might be my favorite). Now we just need some awesome battery mods for it
I just wish that somebody would explain what DMG stands for. I hear it all the time and nobody says what it is.
It's Dot Matrix Game bro it's written on the screen
The model name of the original Game Boy is DMG-01
@Macho Nacho Productions
You said that the gameboy pocket ips kit has the artifact issues solved in a new version?
Cheers!
Had the issue with the retro pixel mode been fixed since this video?
Thanks for the video. I didn’t know there was a difference between the RIPS and FunnyPlaying IPS kits for the DMG. I wonder if the GBA and GBC FunnyPlaying kits are different as well?
That's a good question! I am not 100% sure but I think the IPS panels may be the same. But not 100% sure. Cheers!
its a very nice IPS kit. I couldnt ever call it the best because it replaces half of the original console with a custom PCB. The best will be a kit that uses the original console! But thats just my opinion
That would be really cool if we could somehow utilize the original front pcb, but it would be a pretty difficult mod to do. Cheers buddy!
I hope that helps buddy.
what about the GAME BOY DMG IPS LCD V5 WITH OSD - HISPEEDIDO it seems to the the same options?
You are not kidding I misaligned my screen and had to use some alcohol to carefully remove the screen again and put new sticky tape down
I know man, I think the gaskets would be much better if they could use a weaker adhesive.
Yeah I agree dude. The adhesive gasket alone isn’t the way to install the screen. A lot can go wrong and it’s very difficult to fix. Cheers buddy!
I'm bidding on a pair of DMGs on eBay to do this and a case swap. I want to keep my near perfect original (minus where my dad wrote our last name in permanent marker on the back) as an original and find one that has... some wear to mod.
And won. So this is definitely in my future.
My sister’s Gameboy is from 1990. What parts should be replaced on those old ones before proceeding?
please make a dmg mod video for chiptune! audio jacks, power cleaner and speaker
and screen if it helps
I'm not changing. I don't see bigger screen , lots o colors n the control wheel as selling points. IPS close to stock size . enough color and wheel control is fine. Only selling point if cheaper
All valid points. The RIPS V3 is an extremely solid product and if you have one, I'd agree there's really no need to change. Cheers buddy!
nice video as always.
Thanks buddy! I really appreciate the comment! Cheers!
Is that retro pixel mode on any of the gba kits from Funnyplaying?
Not at the moment, but I would expect that they will do something similar with future revisions. Cheers!
At 7:13 you soldered an old Gameboy speaker to the new board, but if I ordered a new speaker and were to solder the red and black wires to the board, from this position which side would it connect?
Did you use flux when you soldered the speaker?
After installing this mod, my speaker has a bit of a constant buzz. Would replacing the speaker with funnyplaying's dmg speaker fix this issue? Thanks for your videos!
thank you for great video! Is both of kit(RIPS V3 and FunnyPlaying) battery life are same?
You’re welcome buddy! I haven’t done a thorough test on that yet but I would imagine they would be pretty similar. Great question! Cheers!
I got a flash cart for my original screen gameboy just so I could play roms and it not look like an emulator.
Nice! Cheers!
Stl files for the bracket?

@@MachoNachoProductions you are amazing and I love your videos. Just ordered two of these kits thanks to you my wallet is mad haha
Haha! Thanks dude! Sorry about the wallet, but at least your DMG’s will be happy! I’m sure your going to enjoy them too! Cheers buddy!
Do you recap your devices? Any caps you recommend after doing this mod? Thanks.
Console5 makes a great cap kit
Thanks man!
Absolutely Michael! Cheers buddy!
I’ve been modding and gaming for years, and you make excellent videos Tito. Keep it up!
Thank you Jeanfranco! Really appreciate it man! Cheers!
Is it possible to set different colors for the sprites like gbc does?
Hi Mosiu! Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a feature to change the color pallets in the same manner as the GBC. There are 36 different color backgrounds that the FunnyPlaying kit provides. I hope that answers your questions. Cheers!
I received it today. But there was a sensor touch included. I don’t know why..
Cheers!
Is the kit supposed to come with a custom bezel that is 11% larger viewable area? The kit I just got came with a standard glass piece.
My OSD Rips v4 kit does not have this horrible dots glitchs :(
Can you use nimh batteries with this or do you need a regulator
Do you know if the HandHeld Legends shells will need modification to show the full screen?
That's a very good question! I haven't seen the Prestige shells from Hand held legend but I am assuming that you will still need to trim the window to fit the larger image of the FunnyPlaying IPS. The best thing to do would be to contact HHL via email, they are pretty responsive. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Cheers buddy!
My retro pixel ips screen is a bit flickery on startup. Is this normal?
I just installed this kit. For some reason the shows a border around the image. Any idea why this would happen?
So is the screen lens larger on the funny playing mod?
11% bigger
Really not feeling that modifying the screen size. If you want a bigger screen get a Gameboy advanced. Maybe thats just me though.
Agree, it is extra work. That’s the nice thing about the RIPS kit, no screen modifying is necessary. Also, the GBA is a great alternative. Cheers!
Its worth it and barely bigger
It was also easy to mod the shell and screen size. Soldering the speaker was the hardest thing by far
I bought and installed the same kit. I noticed in Zelda links awakening of link is standing near the top few rows of the screen there is a flickering. Anyone else see this??
Does anyone know where I can get the 3d printed display bracket? I cant find the stl file or anywhere to buy it.
This should be the stl file for the funnyplaying DMG kit: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4541111
Cheers!
i want a DS lite with an IPS ☹️
You and me both dude.
Sorry to hear about the GB motherboard going bad. Glad everything worked out in the end though! Cheers!
It's a year and half later. Finally found a DMG for a good price. Free from my brother's girlfriend's basement storage. This mod is on the schedule.
hey tito \m/ waiting on the tax return to pick a couple up from HHL
Cheers!
Ive had 2 of these Screens randomly develop clusters of dead Pixels. They are amazing when working but Total Junk in my Experience so I can't recommend. Too Pricey to keep replacing these Junk Screens
i wanna die
u talk to much to stretch it to 10 mins for those ads
