They are totally missing a trick by not having a setting to have the letters of 'Color' match the original GBC logo, they've got each individual colour by the look of it (Red, Purple, Green, Yellow, Blue) and they look nice and vibrant!
Honestly the coolest thing they could do is have it go from green to red with it slowly graduating to red from right to left as a battery indicator it would be super nice with some colours and would work really well
That would be amazing! Like I said, the possibilities are endless. They could even get rid of the gbc logo and have a window there for displaying other information. So many cool things they can do! Can’t wait to see what’s next!

It's unbelievable how we went from not being able to backlight the GBC a few years ago to the many various options available today.. just wow! With the newly found ease of use, This would make a great starter kit for someone's first console mod :)
Yeah, the only thing I would want from this would be the ability to customize the colors the the Game Boy Color logo so I could get it to match the original when it had different colors for the "Color" part. Or have them cycle a rainbow or something.
For those struggling to adhere the touch sensor with kapton tape, (I know I did when applying it to a transparent shell), use a small cut-in piece of foam or bubble wrap to pressure-fit the touch sensor to the shell. It works great and I no longer have to worry about disassembling the unit to readhere the touch sensor to the top.
Tito, as always your production and technical finesse is unmatched. Love your videos and constantly tune in to get excited for modding retro consoles and to see what’s available on the market. just finished putting this together... I've done a lot of mods using youtube but hadn't used a video with chapters - thanks for that! I wish the white cables were way shorter but overall very easy kit that looks and feels OEM. Also - if you guys get the same rechargable batteries - be sure to remove the plastic guard from the charging dock or your batteries won't charge xD
I just successfully performed this mod with every step following your vid!! They must have had a revision of the flex board that comes with the screen kit as the start and select solder pads are now up near the ribbon connector into the screen, right where it bends. I was worried the start and select would contact each other but doesn’t seem to be the case! Another tip for everyone - make sure you have a small enough soldering iron tip or it might be hard to get those start and select solder points on the game boys board! With all that said what an amazing mod and thanks for the video Tito!!!
Would love if they could illuminate it using essentially the same color scheme as the original. "GAME BOY" in white, and "COLOR" in the same set of colors as it was on the original lens.

I know this is an older video now but I just wanted to say thank you. This was super helpful for finding the solder points for start and select while installing my IPS screen.
Just got this kit myself, and I must say it is as awesome as it looks in the video. The laminated screen makes such a huge difference . I also like the backlit logo, though, as some others stated, it would be nice if on top of the color choices, they would have a mode where the logo lights up in the same color palette as the original unlit one. But eh, it is fine , couldn't ask for more with this. Installation was a breeze, aside of a dumb mistake on my part (yes do not accidentally short 5v and GND, the GBC actually does have 2 fuses, which are single use, once blown they need replaced, learned that sadly the hard way. I have done numerous mods on my handhelds, and this was the first time ever I did such a beginners mistake. Doh. )
Thanks for this video. I've now bought and fit this mod this morning. The touch sensor has already moved away from the shell so I'm going to have to tape it up a bit better. Apart from that, it's an amazing piece of kit!

i just completed my first ever Game Boy Color mod! installing the upgraded (and gorgeous) screen was a ton of fun. this was also my first attempt at soldering! as a matter of fact, this video helped me learn a proper technique, though, i’m sure i should keep practicing. 😅 thanks for walking us through the installation! I learned a lot, and now have a fancy new GBC
What soldering tool did you get? I’m really eager to get this kit but don’t have any soldering tools and I don’t solder enough to buy a fancy one. Just curious if you or anyone else has any advice on this end?
I've been watching video after video after video trying to mod my own gameboy but either they would have half of the things you would need linked or none at all. they would also have the soldering part missing or they would only say solder this to this and that without showing exactly what it is your soldering. but in your video I didn't have any questions involving any of the steps!! good good video bro!
I just picked up a GBC with this exact mod from my local video game shop today. My first ever GBC! They showed me how to do some of the features at the shop, but I’m sure I’ll forget, so thank you for going over them here. And you’re right, the image on the screen does look very premium. I have the blue see-through shell with orange see-through buttons. It has a great over-all look. ♥️
Definitely don't remove the screen adhesive until you know its working. That was the one thing I did differently than your guide. I just used a piece of painters tape on the outside to hold the LCD it in place while I worked. Very glad I did that because I got a bad LCD with tons of discolored pixels and a big purple splotch in one corner. Swapping in a replacement should fortunately be a very quick process.

This video helped me find the alternative pin outs for start and select! This way I can install the LCD and the GBC ARC RGB board, making the buttons illuminate as well as the logo! Thanks for the info Tito!
Another great video! I would add some cons, though: - You pretty much need to use their custom shells, otherwise it's really hard to modify an existing one, as you pointed out. In fact, I would love a video of you doing exactly that to show us how it can be done. - The backlit logo is awesome, but does it not draw more power than the 1.0 version? Maybe it's not significant, but would be worth measuring. Thanks again, Tito!
Thanks Antonio! That’s a great question, I think that since the backlit logo is just being lit but the IPs panel it would use little to no additional power since the whole panel is already backlit. But that would be interesting to test. Cheers buddy!

Another great video! I just got one of these and honestly I think its a huge upgrade. I didn't Think the screen being so close to the glass was going to matter but after having it in hand I can say It looks really really good. I have no complaints after a few days of using it.
Dude, thank you for going over the features! I thought my screen was faulty because a bit of the bottom was cut off... Funny Playing doesn't really explain this anywhere and neither does retro modding, not that I could find. I am so relieved all my hard work wasn't in vain!

Super sad RGRS doesn't ship to germany. Hope the screen will become available in a european shop soon, I have a GBC I want to revive and this screen would make this process 100% easier.
So what happen if your screen crack? Having to buy a complete new screen plus glass is less cost efficient as compared to just buying a new glass replacement.
@@carxiong6744 If it's tempered glass and you're being careful with it, that's probably a chance most would be willing to take. I messed up a screen the other day trying to adjust it while on the adhesive since it didn't align. $20 down the drain.
Ok, I love that Color fans are receiving this awesome screen, but I am going to have to put in a request for a GBA version now. This is too good. Lamination is a game changer.
Just got it installed, it looks stunning. As you said, it was a fairly simple process (your instructions were extremely helpful), though I had to gently scrap some coating off the start and aelect vias to get the solder to stick (a little no-clean flux helped). Thanks for the discount and for helping me find this great kit!
Just finished installing mine tonight (I have the funnyplaying V2.3 version). Took a bit longer than I would have liked (the soldering part I found very fiddly), but the end result is definitively worth it. Absolutely love it.
handy to mention, the start and select pad on the ribbon cabel are a bit too close, so if you have a nice round solder ball on both, when closing the gbc up they might touch and create a short between start and select, when you hit either both would be pressed. I recommend keeping the blobs as small as possible
Hello! I bought a custom gameboy from Etsy that I believe has this exact problem. The start and select buttons input at the same time which is messing the entire console up and making games unplayable. Is there a fix for this?

I installed everything only to not be able to select a different color so I searched throught the comments hoping someone might have the answer to what I did wrong and it was this exact issue. I was able to hold start and both buttons would be pressed so I had to resolder and make sure they wouldn't touch. Took like 5 tries but I got it working perfect. Thank you!
I have this and its incredible in the grid mode, I think if it was any bigger it would look blocky. The framerate is perfect and there is no blur at all.

I just installed the screen using a crunchy original donor. I used the funny playing transparent orange, new black buttons and black bezel screen kit. The whole thing looks amazing. I never used any of my GBC's because of the dark screen. Really awesome to have this. Thanks for the Code!
Everything is intimidating at first. Grab a 20 dollar test board of Amazon that has lots to solder. Then you'll be laughing at how much easier it was than you thought. De-soldering capacitors is trickier and where you can potentially lift a pad from the board but it's usually fixable. With practice and a mistake or two, that will be no problem either. I also did the Neo Geo Pocket mod without a problem (except for not clamping the video ribbon enough the first time) after just one practice soldering project.
There's a really great soldering subreddit I would highly recommend if you're interested in getting into it, they're very supportive and a great resource to learn from.
Boy this is making my life harder. I just recently received a Q5 + Precut Shell kit from Aliexpress that's just been sitting and waiting for me to install. I actually waited a little bit to do anything, because I saw that in June Boxypixel had planned to revise their shells for the GBC--presumably to take advantage of the Q5--so I did. Now they've done that and I've been eyeballing a new Boxypixel GBC, since I already have the screen and have found myself desiring one for over a year now. But then this comes along and...wow that illuminated logo is so handsome. Now I need to decide if I want this or a full blown Boxypixel GBC, which isn't that much more expensive than this.
Darn it, Tito is like a god, everything he touches gets SOLD OUT! Anyways, like I always say, editing skills is top notch. EDIT: Reading the comments, someone mentioned they dont ship outside of the US, thats a real shame.
If you order directly from funnyplaying website, I think they ship internationally and their little bit cheaper but it takes awhile for your items to ship

Just installed the kit into what was a battered, filthy old purple Gamebuy Color. They have since re-designed the cable, but the soldering points are clearly marked. If you power on the Gameboy before soldering the POWER wire, the screen will just be black. The original Start/Select membrane buttons fit in the new shell just fine.
How about the battery consumption? How long can you play using a non-rechargeable battery? I know rechargable batteries are very common now, just thought that it would be a good reference to have an idea of the actual consumption.

The problem is that L of the word “COLOR” overlaps the “O” so maybe that was the reason

so... your tip is to make sure the kapton tape has good adherence initially?

@@carxiong6744 If it's tempered glass and you're being careful with it, that's probably a chance most would be willing to take. I messed up a screen the other day trying to adjust it while on the adhesive since it didn't align. $20 down the drain.
Ok, I love that Color fans are receiving this awesome screen, but I am going to have to put in a request for a GBA version now. This is too good. Lamination is a game changer.
Just got it installed, it looks stunning. As you said, it was a fairly simple process (your instructions were extremely helpful), though I had to gently scrap some coating off the start and aelect vias to get the solder to stick (a little no-clean flux helped). Just finished installing mine tonight (I have the funnyplaying V2.3 version). Took a bit longer than I would have liked (the soldering part I found very fiddly), but the end result is definitively worth it. Absolutely love it.
handy to mention, the start and select pad on the ribbon cabel are a bit too close, so if you have a nice round solder ball on both, when closing the gbc up they might touch and create a short between start and select, when you hit either both would be pressed. I recommend keeping the blobs as small as possible
Hello! I bought a custom gameboy from Etsy that I believe has this exact problem. The start and select buttons input at the same time which is messing the entire console up and making games unplayable. Is there a fix for this?

I installed everything only to not be able to select a different color so I searched throught the comments hoping someone might have the answer to what I did wrong and it was this exact issue. I was able to hold start and both buttons would be pressed so I had to resolder and make sure they wouldn't touch. Took like 5 tries but I got it working perfect. Thank you!

I have this and its incredible in the grid mode, I think if it was any bigger it would look blocky. The framerate is perfect and there is no blur at all.

I just installed the screen using a crunchy original donor. I used the funny playing transparent orange, new black buttons and black bezel screen kit. The whole thing looks amazing. I never used any of my GBC's because of the dark screen. Really awesome to have this. Thanks for the Code!

That's so awesome, but as someone who's never soldered before I'm still not comfortable jumping into a mod like this. Too bad, I'd love it.
Perfect time to learn a new skill then, this project is as easy as you can get.
Soldering isn't as hard as it looks, grab an iron off of amazon, and get a practice kit. I used to practice on sega genesis cartridges.
Everything is intimidating at first. Grab a 20 dollar test board of Amazon that has lots to solder. Then you'll be laughing at how much easier it was than you thought. De-soldering capacitors is trickier and where you can potentially lift a pad from the board but it's usually fixable. With practice and a mistake or two, that will be no problem either. I also did the Neo Geo Pocket mod without a problem (except for not clamping the video ribbon enough the first time) after just one practice soldering project.
I agree with everyone else, this is prob the simplest soldering project you could find. Give it a go! Its like 4 vias
There's a really great soldering subreddit I would highly recommend if you're interested in getting into it, they're very supportive and a great resource to learn from.
Boy this is making my life harder.
I just recently received a Q5 + Precut Shell kit from Aliexpress that's just been sitting and waiting for me to install. I actually waited a little bit to do anything, because I saw that in June Boxypixel had planned to revise their shells for the GBC--presumably to take advantage of the Q5--so I did. Now they've done that and I've been eyeballing a new Boxypixel GBC, since I already have the screen and have found myself desiring one for over a year now.
But then this comes along and...wow that illuminated logo is so handsome. Now I need to decide if I want this or a full blown Boxypixel GBC, which isn't that much more expensive than this.
Darn it, Tito is like a god, everything he touches gets SOLD OUT!
Anyways, like I always say, editing skills is top notch.
EDIT: Reading the comments, someone mentioned they dont ship outside of the US, thats a real shame.
If you order directly from funnyplaying website, I think they ship internationally and their little bit cheaper but it takes awhile for your items to ship

Update: completed my build and couldn't be happier! Had to place the touch sensor under the infrared plate to get it to respond but otherwise went smooth and would recommend!

Awesome!!!! This is quite the upgrade from other screen mods!
Just installed the kit into what was a battered, filthy old purple Gamebuy Color. They have since re-designed the cable, but the soldering points are clearly marked. If you power on the Gameboy before soldering the POWER wire, the screen will just be black. The original Start/Select membrane buttons fit in the new shell just fine.
I'd like to see the standard Gameboy Color logo but with a slight shimmer, or slow-strobe effect on the letters for 'Color' ✨
The drop in screen with the front bezel attached should be the default way to mod going forward! Are there any plans for other handheld systems?

How about the battery consumption? How long can you play using a non-rechargeable battery? I know rechargable batteries are very common now, just thought that it would be a good reference to have an idea of the actual consumption.
