    I remember back in the day the limited solutions to have a backlight GBC screen, at first they were some front light panels that you need to attach with LOCA to the screen, it was really messy and the results isn’t great, then appeared other screen alternatives that required lots os soldering, and now we have this amazing elements that are just plug and play and includes a dedicated PCB to bridge the screen with the existing motherboard, this is just incredible, now we can have the consoles that we could only dream as children

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 8 місяців тому +10

      The AGS-101 on a GBC was one of the worst offenders in my opinion: taking the screen out of one of those, cutting up a GBC all around, losing the power LED and still needed a driver board to interface them both. Thankfully we're long past that and no AGS-101s need to die anymore.

      @@Blackpapalink I'm both excited and horrified by this... On the one hand, it'll be great to get new screens (the screens on the fat DS were horrid, and were the worst part of it single handedly, even more so than the ergonomics)...
      On the other hand, having seen how much DS prices have soared on the second-hand market (and 3DS prices are even worse...), will this drive prices even higher?

      @@breakinglegsandbreakinghea3167 Exactly. Time for a bezel-less GB/GBC. It's the next big leap that I can think of. That, or maybe a new Gameboy case that's larger, to make the GB/GBC more ergonomic for larger hands (and to have a larger screen, and a larger battery). But excluding up-size options for the case, bezel-less is definitely the way to refit a classic GB/GBC for the modern era. Can't wait for a modder to make it happen.

    • @Anthestudios
      @Anthestudios 8 місяців тому +10

      The problem is that all of these mods are based on old inventory. No one is making screens specifically for the Gameboy: these are old Blackberry parts. A borderless solution would require a screen which coincidentally has the same dimensions as a Gameboy lens. I don't think that exists.

      Many GBA sidescroller games really need the motion clarity of an OLED display. They look more blurry in motion on all the ITA/IPS kits compared to the OEM display and an OLED kit would finally fix that.

    • @H6rdc0re
      @H6rdc0re 8 місяців тому

      @@H6rdc0re it would get to a point where motion clarity would be comparable to the OEM GBA screen, it certainly is on my Steam Deck OLED. It solves display motion blur in all those GBA sidescrollers especially when the OLED display would be about as small as the OEM GBA display.

    • @TheRealGara
      @TheRealGara 8 місяців тому

    • @KayJay_EU
      @KayJay_EU 8 місяців тому +3

      @@TheRealGara we are talking about GBA screen size not a big TV. The smaller the screen size the less physical distance the background graphics move. An LG OLED screen at the size of the OEM GBA screen would mostly be on par with the OEM screens motion clarity or maybe even better.
      On a big TV you currently need to enable ULMB or BFI, but future display techniques will improve for that screen size category.

    Picked up two of these. One for my own personal GBC (I've already made a PoCo, so this'll be for a stand alone GBC), and another for any future project or replacement I might end up needing.
    I did a complete reshell, and added a audio amp to make it just that much more robust. Fantastic project, very easy to do. Awesome video! If you're watching this and planning on buying the kit, please be aware that this screen will NOT fit into an OEM Gameboy Color shell. My girlfriend and I just spent most of the day trying to make it work and I really don't think there's a good way to do it. We used a dremel tool with various different attachments to try to modify the OEM case in a way that is not visible externally and concluded that it's really just not possible, or would take much higher precision tools than we have access to. Retro Game Repair Shop doesn't really make it clear that you really have to buy their shell as well in order to make this mod work.

Also, I would love to see if people can create kits like this for other portable Nintendo hardware like the DS line, can't say if there's a way to do it for the 3DS or 2DS units due to the parallax barrier effect they use or even the touch screens requiring a stylus but who knows.

    Its awesome seeing such kits for older handhelds and stuff, but I really wish that some company gave some love to the Phat DS, as I would really like to mod mine from childhood, and it needs a complete overhaul, since the gray plastic is all scratched up and yellowish, one of the screens is cracked, and I think one of the speakers had like a staticky sound or something, and every time that I bring this up someone just says that I should get a DS lite and mod that instead, since there are better screens and stuff for that handheld, but I just liked how the original Phat DS felt and looked like, and its like those people that love the original GBA, where even though a lot of people prefer the GBA SP because of the backlight and portability, because of screen mods and stuff the original GBA is still used plenty because of the form factor, and its amazing how people still love the GBA micro too, because during my childhood I did try that system because a friend had it, but I could never get used to it since it just felt too small and cramped for my taste.

      One of the problems is, a small shake in the handle of an iron translates to a bigger shake at the tip, due to the length - you just don't see short irons because of the length of the heating element needed. I'm old.. I have a tremor in my hands due to a condition and I take beta blockers to help. But, I've been soldering all my life so I can still make it work. Practice is what you need, my friend. Get some old boards or practice kits. Once you're soldering something that isn't precious you'll be surprised how quickly you become confident and proficient 🤘🏻

    I thought the touch screen sounded kinda excessive, but seeing that it eliminates the need for a touch sensor and means you only need to solder one wire really should make this easier.

    Very cool. I loved my blackberry back in the day. I wish that there was a foldable blackberry like my z fold 4 with a non touch keyboard.

      That is a great idea to include in the videos in my opinion: compatibility with other mods.
      I get it that it's unfeasible to check every single mod out there, and not all of them matter in therms of tests but some that seem to be particularly related (like a case and screen lens) could be interesting.

    Have you noticed any noticible difference in battery life using the OLED compared to the OG version?

      Tynology did a test - roughly 75% the original screens battery life

    Tito, I'm just a new subscriber since yesterday, any chance if there'll be a PoCo mod with the OLED? I'm in current planning phase of a PoCo with an OLED screen...

    hey Tito! great video as always! :D
    I wouldn't do the burn in test... At this point we all know burn in happens in OLED displays given enough time and screen brightness, you'd just be ruining a perfectly good display and gaining nothing from it really. With these kits being limited I think that'd just be sad.

    Another potential con of OLED panels is power. In my experience, AMOLED uses a lot more power than LCD displays, so that may be something to consider when it's drawing directly from the GBC's power supply.

    Brother have you tried using raspberry Pi 5 inside 3ds with capture card and use it as portable emulation station. It will play all switch and PS2 games on it . Man that would be awesome and we can connect it to a tv or screen . As well
