I have the brass buttons on my Boxy Pixel build as well. I recommend lacquering the the raw brass buttons to prevent oxidation, or at the very least slow down the process. Is it possible to do this mod by just using the ips funny playing lcd with flex cable without using the boxy pixel Aluminum case, while also using the battery mod? I pretty much want everything besides the Aluminum case. I love this mod but want a custom case
I actually just recently got Benn Venn's Aioli drop in LCD kit for the GBC. I haven't looked at it yet so, apologies I can yet answer your question. I am sure they will be quite similar but Benn Venn kits tend to be very power efficient. Not sure how the generic kits are in comparison. Perhaps one day I will get around to reviewing Benn Venn Aioli kit for the GBC. I haven't used any Jelly Bellys Customs products yet, but I hear great things about them, so again apologies, I can't speak to that. Cheers buddy!
Is it possible to use this housing with double A batteries and the original LCD? I think it's a slick housing, but I don't have the money for all the parts at once, and I don't want to leave my GBC open while I wait for parts.
Hey Lasky great question! Unfortunately the metal boxy pixel shell is not compatible with AA batteries because there is not battery door, it needs to have the lithium polymer battery and charging PCB installed. I do believe this kit is compatible with the original LCD, but you will need a 3D printed bracket so that it fits into the shell. I would double check the boxy pixel website, he has a lot of great information on there that should clear things up. I hope this helps answer your questions. Best of luck! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions yeah I just saw the lack of door. Well I do hope to see what I can do. However in the mean time I'm going to install an AGS screen that I have into an AGB. So wish me luck, because my hands jitter a lot when working with small things like this.
Great videos, thanks so much for sharing. I have potentially a dumb question - I have a really hard time cutting kapton tape. The tape I got is crazy strong and adheres to any razor blade or scissors I use. Plus I get fingerprints all over it when I do it. Any tips for dealing with kapton?
Thank you Mr. Bawk! No such thing as a dumb question. I think that just the nature of kapton tape. I have the same issues. I also get finger prints all over it. I think this is perfectly normal. The more you deal with the kapton tape, the better you will become at handling it. I hope that helps a little. Cheers!

Hello, Quick question Tito, the battery can it be used on an ips shell instead? I already got my materials before watching this metal shell mod! Anywho, great content as always cheers!
So I am currently going through my own process of doing this to my old Color, ive connected the battery and when i went to test the screen, it is on but extremely dim. Though when I turn it off, it flashes for a moment and I can see that the backlight is working. Do you have any advice on how to remedy this issue?
Amazing video. I was just wondering though... is there any mod to show when battery life is getting low. (So you know when to plug it in) before losing a saved game.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video. I’m not 100% sure but I think the battery indicator light on the gameboy still works. I think it’ll start to dim once the battery is low. The nice thing is that you can plug it in while playing just in case. Cheer buddy!
Question. So My Life in gaming just did a video on this subject and mentioned that you lent him a gameboy with the best feeling and best responsive buttons, may I ask how you achieved this on an IPS modified gameboy advance, and gameboy color? is there a specific vendor to purchase the membranes, buttons and casing from?
Great question Lion Heart (love the name)! I find using the OEM Nintendo buttons and membranes to be the best option. I used the OEM membranes in the Game Boy color with brass buttons (from Boxy Pixel), as seen in the MLiG video. For the GBA SP, I actually used an after market shell and aftermarket buttons and membranes, they all came with the pre-milled shell I got from Retro Modding. I hope this helps answer your questions! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions It does help thanks! but it's also kind of bad news as it means there are no good 3rd party providers yet for those parts, which happen to be the most common parts to fail first, I'd have to look for near-new gameboys to modify in order to have the best. oh well, thanks for the info, maybe someone some day will take on the task to create AAA replacement parts for gameboy color/advance.
Haha, that would be awesome to manufacture great membranes! In my experience some aftermarket ones are good and some are really bad. I’d have to say in general I’ve been pretty happy with retro modding membranes, but I think part of it has to do with console we’re talking about. I think sp membranes are probably easier to produce than a gbc for example because of the style of membrane. Cheers dude!
You don’t need a custom shell, but it makes the process a whole lot easier. Modding the shell is quite challenging. HHL sell some great cheaper customs shells for this mod. Cheers!
Perhaps I should do a video running some test on how long these batteries last! Unfortunately, I don't know currently. Sorry for not being helpful. Cheers!
Can it link to other gameboy color? i mean, the mod changes the game link port for a usb-C port... looks like you can't be able to use the game boy printer anymore... not as perfect as it looks. Just asking
The link port is still there and it works! You can still use the Game Boy Printer and connect to other Game Boys! The USB-C is only for charging the internal battery. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Cheers!
Great question! In my video I’m actually using the boxy pixel shell which does a pretty good job at keeping the lcd in place. Are you also using a boxy pixel shell?
Macho Nacho Productions Yea I’m using the latest boxypixel shell. When it’s all assembled my screen has a slight angle to it. Like it’s crooked to the body of the gameboy.
Macho Nacho Productions thanks I reached out to him, and he gave me some pointers keeping it held down with kapton tape and some foam. It’s perfectly aligned now.
That's a great question. I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it but I imagine it is going to be really hindered by the touch sensor. If you really want the IR functionality, I would recommend not installing the sensor. I actually find that the default brightness is plenty bright. Cheers!
Where can I get a glass lens for the ips screen for the GBC? I bought a foil one from jelly belly and it doesn’t fit. It’s too small for the ips screen. I thought it was the correct size. Oops lol 🤦🏽♂️
A normal original size glass screen lens should fit the IPS panel. It sounds like you got a custom lens for the older TFT lcd mods like the benn venn/McWill/Midwest embedded. Just a normal glass screen lens is what you need. Hope this helps. Cheers!
Hey man, awesome video! I’m going to attempt this exact mod at some point. I have most of the materials already, but I was wondering if it’s possible to include a pam8302a amp somewhere as well. Is there any extra space in the shell?

Love your vids, Tito! This is vital info I can't get as clearly elsewhere, and it's helping build a good mod for a gift. One question though: does the IPS screen have any dropped frames or tearing?
Thank you Albylion! I havent noticed any really, there may be a small hiccup here and there but nothing too distracting. Cheers dude and best of luck on the build, sounds like a really nice gift!
So when we expecting to see an Advance SP of this shells?
Great question Wimo! I hope soon! It would be so cool! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions I’m literally here thinking that when this comes out I’m gonna wait for your video in it.
Wouldn't metal buttons wear out the rubber membranes faster? Know they're relatively easy to replace but still curious
Loving the handheld series. I have my og GBA and a 100SP, but Ive been looking for more power and better features for emulating. Not to request here, but your suggested modern powerful (capable of at least PS1) handheld would be greatly appreciated. Also considering quality functionality and reliability etc. That would be awesome. New to the channel, but pretty cool! Also Im catchin either Cali or Philly off that accent.
@machonacho, whose blue mat is that you are using for disassembly? Love the small cells for catching screws!
Check out the link in my description. I think I have it there. It’s from Amazing. It’s great!
Nice vid, man...
Thank you, Pat! I’m happy you enjoyed the video! Cheers bud!
Love the intro bro reminds me of stranger things
Haha, thank you Red! I was sort of going for that! Cheers bud!

Would the USB C board and LiPo fit into a plastic GBC shell with some modding? I like the look of the Mcwill mini usb solution but.. USB-C everything 😅
Haha all usb c everything! Yes it should fit in a standard shell with modification. It will be quite a bit of work but rewarding when done! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Awesome, thanks!
really nice video,i have a FunnyPlaying DMG GB,i just saw your video to know how to switch retro pixel mode, really helpful!! thank you!!,and one more question, the FunnyPlaying DMG GB screen size is 44X48.5mm,do you know this GBC and GBP screen size? thx a lot!!
Is it possible to do this mod by just using the ips funny playing lcd with flex cable without using the boxy pixel Aluminum case, while also using the battery mod? I pretty much want everything besides the Aluminum case. I love this mod but want a custom case
Hey have you built any GBC using the drop in kit from Jellybelly Customs? how different is their generic drop in kit to Bennvenns?
I actually just recently got Benn Venn's Aioli drop in LCD kit for the GBC. I haven't looked at it yet so, apologies I can yet answer your question. I am sure they will be quite similar but Benn Venn kits tend to be very power efficient. Not sure how the generic kits are in comparison. Perhaps one day I will get around to reviewing Benn Venn Aioli kit for the GBC. I haven't used any Jelly Bellys Customs products yet, but I hear great things about them, so again apologies, I can't speak to that. Cheers buddy!
Has anybody tested the solid brass buttons on a plastic aftermarket GBC shell? How does it feel?
@@LaskyLabs Haha, good luck dude!
Nice!
Cheers!
Man I love those shells, I wanted to ask about if you think the gb micro shells are worth the install or wait till there might be something better cause I have an old beat up one that I was thinking of re shelling
I think the macro shells are totally worth it, although I'm not sure if an upgrade is in the works! Cheers!
Love the Videos man, started watching a few days ago and cant stop. I noticed you sometime show your 3D printer in use. What brand is it and do you recommend a certain model? I am thinking about purchasing one soon. Any help would appreciated. Thanks!!!
Thank you dude 🙏! It’s the Prusa Mini. It’s a great little printer. I recommend it! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks man. Can you do an affiliate link so you can make some money on it. I just bought the circuit board holder through your link, received and used it already. Think makes working on boards so much easier!
Awesome dude! Thank you! Unfortunately I dont have a Prusa affiliate. I really appreciate the support!
What is the thickness of the Kapton tape you use? Thank you
12mm. I think I have a link to the exact one I use in the video description. Cheers!
does a laminated kit work with this boxy pixel shell?
How long battery lasts compared to the original?
perfection
Great vid. I built one a couple of months back with the V2 Funnyplaying kit and an Atomic Purple GBC. Only issue is it has a bit of screen tearing but otherwise it's great!
That’s awesome dude! Yeah screen tearing is a bit of an issue but it’s supposedly way better than the V1. I heard that (the V1) had a lot of screen tearing issues. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yeah I don't know if I was sent a GBC V1 by mistake or if it's still an issue with GBC V2 but hopefully if there's a V3 it's corrected. GBA V2 has no screen tearing for me =)
I feel like these kits are improving little by little, I would love to see a V3!

It bothers me there's no cut or indent for the sticker on the back :(
That would be a really nice touch if boxy pixel added that. Maybe in a future revision! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions maybe if they do that I'll buy one I have a lot of interest in their products. I've been following your channel closely, I love what you do on here. Keep up the good work :)
I'm curious if I could use the usb c charging board in a different shell
Yes, you absolutely can! Esotericsean did a video on it a while back. Cheers!
Hello,
Quick question Tito, the battery can it be used on an ips shell instead? I already got my materials before watching this metal shell mod! Anywho, great content as always cheers!
It can, but the shell will require quite a bit of trimming to get it to fit inside.
So I am currently going through my own process of doing this to my old Color, ive connected the battery and when i went to test the screen, it is on but extremely dim. Though when I turn it off, it flashes for a moment and I can see that the backlight is working. Do you have any advice on how to remedy this issue?
I’d make sure your solder joints are good and solid. Also that the lcd is properly connected to the driver board and motherboard.
Awesome I will be doing the same mod very soon! Also is there a type c charger for color or just for advance?
They also have it for the color! That’s the one I have in the video. Cheers buddy and best of luck on the build!
Is there any where to buy one that’s already built?
Do I need to get a custom shell to accommodate the FunnyPlaying screen? I want to just install the screen and nothing else.
You don’t need a custom shell, but it makes the process a whole lot easier. Modding the shell is quite challenging. HHL sell some great cheaper customs shells for this mod. Cheers!
My question is how long would this run? I would love to see the ultimate battery mod for a IPS Backlight !
Perhaps I should do a video running some test on how long these batteries last! Unfortunately, I don't know currently. Sorry for not being helpful. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions No problem! Love your videos, and your interaction with your audience ! I already shared your videos with some friends!
Awesome, thank you for sharing dude!
Cheers!
My funnyplaying screen has a slight amount of play between the lcd and the frame. How did you keep it centered?
Great question! In my video I’m actually using the boxy pixel shell which does a pretty good job at keeping the lcd in place. Are you also using a boxy pixel shell?
Macho Nacho Productions Yea I’m using the latest boxypixel shell. When it’s all assembled my screen has a slight angle to it. Like it’s crooked to the body of the gameboy.
That’s really strange. I would reach out to Nick at Boxy Pixel. He’s usually pretty responsive. Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions thanks I reached out to him, and he gave me some pointers keeping it held down with kapton tape and some foam. It’s perfectly aligned now.
Awesome! That’s good to hear! Cheers!
any word on the new retro pixel screen for gbc by funnyplaying please ?
Coming soon!
2020, Why dont use 1.5V Li-ion recheargable batteries ?
one question is the IR still working or is the sensor in front of it
That's a great question. I can't say for sure since I haven't tried it but I imagine it is going to be really hindered by the touch sensor. If you really want the IR functionality, I would recommend not installing the sensor. I actually find that the default brightness is plenty bright. Cheers!
So I have a question what type of solder are you using?
Great question Josh! Check out the video description. I have an link to the exact solder I use. Hope that helps bud!
Cheers!
Yeah I figured that out when I compared my original GBC to the new screen. Thank you! Need to order a new one
Is it still possible to build this? The link to the IPS screen is broken.
Hey man, awesome video! I’m going to attempt this exact mod at some point. I have most of the materials already, but I was wondering if it’s possible to include a pam8302a amp somewhere as well. Is there any extra space in the shell?
I’m sure you can find space in the shell but just make sure to is insulate it well so it doesn’t short out.
@@MachoNachoProductions would thermal tape be sufficient? Thank you for the response!
Yes, kapton tape should do. Just to be sure I would email Nick at boxy pixel to confirm fitment. He’s pretty responsive. Cheers!
Great
