Another great video. A lot of people don't realize how much can be done with one light. Well done.
Agreed Tim, and thanks!
is this strobe light with normal light? or how is this working?
Great video. The people that didn’t like this video probably don’t like ice cream or puppies either.
Haha touche, and thank you.
You’re simple explanations never cease to amaze! Thank you.
Glad you are enjoying them Gabriel!
Super Simple & super beautiful. Thanks for sharing, I have recently got Godox AD600Pro and new 120cm diffusion umbrella, Will try it soon!!!
Awesome! They are amazing lights.
Nice captures... Great video... Thanks! Peace, Love, and Happiness!!! 🙃
Straight to the point, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for checking it out.
Excellent work and a nice short specific explanation.
Simple and beautiful. I never understood why some folks complicate things with 5 or 6 lights. All you need is the ONE light. Nice one Nathan 😎👊🏾
I often find that some of my favorite work comes from a simplified one light setup.
Thank you for creating studio lighting content that has so much detail!
Happy to help!
My go to setup! Since I got my deep umbrella I rarely use anything else
Same. It's just such a pretty light.
Showing how simple can garner great results! Thanks
Simple can often be my favorite.
It is amazing how you can pack a lot of good information into a short video... thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Another helpful video. Many thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Stunning portraits, the black & white toning is on point. Thankyou for sharing your tips 😁
Anytime Josh! Thanks for checking out the vid.
Great work big thanks. You are awesome.
Thank kind kindly!
Hi Nathan. Great video. Is it possible to use an Octa instead of an umbrella?
Great information yet again. Concise and and very well articulated. Thanks again for your effort.
Thanks Randall! Glad you’re enjoying the vids.
Superb. Thank you very much.
Most welcome
Im so glad youre back in the saddle. Youve pulled me through the covid ditch. Thanks man!
Glad to have you here checking out the vids!
Excellent video.
Glad you liked it!
It’s amazing that he had so few subscribers, nice tutorials, compact. Maybe that is the problem the algorithm tends to favor videos full of redundancy because it can put more adds.
That's the issue I think I am running into, and one that I was talking about yesterday :) My longer videos got more traction from the recommended videos on UA-cam, which is to bad.
Always great work!
Thanks D, I'm glad you're enjoying them.
beautiful and simple, thanks mate
Anytime
If you want the light as close as possible, a box or octa will get you closer than a diffused umbrella. But it’s probably only a foot difference and probably not that noticeable of a difference in final results. Nice clean look on the images.
True, I just love my umbrellas :)
@@NathanElson understood. They’re much easier to setup too. Check out the Adorama Glow deep umbrellas. A fraction of the cost of Profoto, and they appear to be identical build.
@@JohnMacLeanPhotography I have that umbrella and it’s INCREDIBLE!
Thanks.
is there also a strobe light? there was some flickers when you shot the photo? Which budget lamp would you suggest to buy for a beginner?
I love your timeless color grading. Not only this one but throughout your work. I still need to improve my editing. It’s the final puzzle
in the jigsaw. Any recommendations haha. Thanks!
Thanks James :) I have a couple of editing tutorials on here that might help you in the right direction.
very nice job
Perfect.... Great content....Thanks
Thanks John!
Cool.
Beautiful! Just a quick question that popped up in my head; if you would have added a reflector on the right side of her, what would you have been looking for in the light/shadows, or otherwise, when determining the distance, position and angle?
Thanks! It's really personal preference. If you want it as more of a rim, then further behind the model, or if more as a fill, then closer to the front. As for how much or how little fill you want, again it all depends on the mood you're going for.
love your videos. I see you are now using the Z7ii. I'm looking to do upgrade from the d800. I'm a portrait shooter. would love your thoughts on the Z7ii
I actually have the Z6II, not the Z7II, and I was using the D800 for a decade before now. I've been really enjoying the Z6II. I didn't see the extra value (+$1500) for the Z7II and I don't miss the extra megapixels.
Nathan you are extremely talented. How do you achieve The monochrome look And what camera do you use to shoot all of your photos with ?
Thanks JB! I use C1 (styles are available here: nathanelson.sellfy.store/ and I shoot all of my videos with the Sony a6400 + Sigma 16mm lens (links in description).
@@NathanElson Nathan, the page won't pull up. I'm not exactly sure which preset to buy ?
@@jbthementor4905 Fixed the link :) You can click it now. I use the C1 Ultimate pack with the TBD preset for this kind of look.
Did you do some retouch on the iris or the eyes? I didn’t see any reflectors.
Yes there is a slight edit to make the eyes pop a bit more.
Which umbrella did you use? silver and white
White
Which lens was used here? Also can you pls include the lens used in your future videos? Thanks. 👍
Sigma 85mm f/1.4 ART :)
Is the ad 400 pro powerful enough to get these results, with a 48-inch ez glow softbox?
Yep. Definitely is. I usually fire my AD600 at 1/8th power to get f/8.
Great video as always from you. I have a general question; do you ever shot with Sigma 50/1.4. Art? I don’t think I have seen you use it in your videos.
Quite often actually 😉 I do favour the 85 in studio but on location I’m a big fan of the 50mm
one question. you got one permanent light in front of her - where does the flash come from then?
That's just the modeling light in the strobe, it doesn't actually do anything other than help the camera focus by casting light on the model. Wen the flash fires that's when the light for the photo comes into play.
😍🙏🏼
Is their alternative to C-stand with extension arm, due to budget for beginners?
Check out the 420B combo stand from Manfrotto (this was the first boom stand I ever used and still own it today) bhpho.to/3zXf2g0
I would love to see more speed light(s) setup.
Hey Errol, I'm not a speedlite guy. I appreciate there portability, but I've always found more use in having the power and modifier options of a larger strobe over the size of a speedlite.
you could buy the Godox AD200 or the AD300. More powerful than speedlights but very cost effective compared to brands like Profoto. (assuming you haven't heard of Godox).
@@Whatreally123 I have more speed lights Godox.
@@Whatreally123 All of my strobes are Godox AD600PRO's
@@NathanElson yes, I have observed that in your videos. My reply was to Errol who asked about speedlights.
Is it Godox that you use or rebranded StrobePro? I once got a lightstand with a boom pole from them and am mighty impressed with their quality. I guess they're Canadian as well.
Where did you locate your flash?
seems like there was also some flash added
QUESTION: I really wish I could understand metering your strobe at f8, etc. without a light meter. That possible?
You can fiddle around until you get the proper exposure, the light meter just takes the guess work out of it.
@@NathanElson Ah! I get it now. Thanks Nathan
Which C1 style is this on your edited images?
Some tweaks on TBD
intro music sounds like cell saga music from DBZ
Haha I can feel that.
But what if you don't have a light meter? My problem is that my photos with studio flash just looks more like if I had the model with a backdrop and it's just flash taken like if it was on camera. My Godox goes up to 1/16. Not more than that.
Buy better equipment
@@NathanElson a man said "be rich" lmao
Yy should have told Fuji to put a lock on the compensation dial
Thanks for doing this video! I love how you got that little bit of shine on her skin. Is that just playing with levels/curves, or one of your presets, or D&B?
Thanks for checking it out! It's a mix of my presets + d&b
@@NathanElson thanks!
Why the light flickering
Over head lights in the studio.
Wondering as to how the photo has hair tired up, where as all the posing in the video is with hair let down. May be the video didn't capture when those shots were taken hmm..
Yep. Same lighting setup, but preferred the images with the hair up.
Well subscribe you all cause some others trying to remove our freedoms but love artistic areas 🥰
Sorry - I do not understand. Why is your umbrella permanently lit? Where does the flash come from? Is it inside the umbrella or elsewhere? Are there other lights present? This is the biggest problem I have with many photography tutorials on UA-cam - they are not clearly explained.
It's lit from the modeling light, and yes the light is inside the umbrella. This is a one light setup as stated in the title, so no there are not other lights present. I don't think it's a lack of explanation, I think you just need to get your hands on some gear so you know what you are looking at when you watch tutorials.
