It is sad that Berserk Creator, Kentaro Miura, passed away in 2021. Hopefully the assistants that worked with him can carry on the story to a conclusion. The Berserk story is a dark and beautifully drawn, emphasizing struggling and continuing on even in the face of overwhelming odds. It is not a nice story but the art work is amazing. @@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 if you find the time you definitely should. There's even an anime from 1997 that is pretty good as an introduction, however there is quite a bit of cut moment, so the manga is the definitive version.
@@xeox4280 I can't argue that those movies were beautifully made. Especially the finale. It was visceral, gut-wrenching, and I legitimately felt Gut's anger and madness grow. I would love to see reactions to either but the movies might be more feasible. Might have to point out the story changes afterwards tho. Personally I think one would do well to watch both adaptations.
This is consistently one of my favorite Death Battle episodes, for one big reason. It’s always darkly entertaining to watch people’s reactions to Guts’ backstory, especially blind reactions. He’s a Badass Survivor, and he’ll always be awesome. Sure, Wiz and Boomstick trim out a LOT of details, but that just encourages more people to follow the story, so it’s all good.
In case you couldn't understand what Nightmare was saying. From beginning to end, he said "At last. At last the time has come!" "Fool! Tremble in my darkness!" "What's wrong?" "Weakling!" "Fear my wrath!" "Tremble in fear." "Soul Caliber!" "Impressive. " "Burn!" "Ah, is that it?" "Darkness. Will consume everything!" That's it. Hope this helped. One of the best Death Battles ever!
Berserk is definitely one of the greatest manga ever created. Probably top three alongside One Piece and Vagabond. Kentaro Miura was an unparalleled artist and story teller, and he crafted the single most influential piece of Dark Fantasy ever. So much modern media would be completely different without the influence of Berserk, it's insane. Miura was a truly talented and dedicated man, right up to his unfortunate passing last year. His legacy will 100% live on forever though.
I'd throw Vinland Saga into the mix too personally, but yeah, this. (Damn, I really need to actually finally get that Brand of Sacrifice tattoo I've wanted for... a minimum of 15 years) Berserk influenced me as a person in so many massive and positive ways, and in all honesty, I probably would not have survived high school without it, and the older I get, the more I realize that despite all that, I only ever discover, realize, or comprehend MORE of the ways Berserk is a masterpiece, never less.
Funfact: Berserk is the inspiration for Demon Souls and the Darksouls series and has a reference to it in almost every Fromsoft entry. Also Guts's Greatsword is also in almost all their games. Berserk is also the grandfather of all dark fantasies
Hehe, to see someone's first reaction to the story of Guts is amusing to see. Reminds me when I found him the first time and just stared at the manga in awe and confusion...like I was 12...aaaand this put anime and manga in a WHOLE new light for me. XD
Oh Guts from Berserk. Nice. That's just one of these most famous anime of all time. :> And the most cruelsome bloodthirsty one. Gutts is the manifastation and symbolism of ironwill so thats why he survive so much. The Song in this "Hai Yai Forces" in Berserk is one of the greatest songs in anime history btw. Good job Beth :>
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I'll take both. Entertainment has many forms. Laugh, Love, Hate, Anger, Distrust, Love Making, Violence, Kindness, Loyality.. because it is all a part of us.
Guts is also based loosely off of Gots the ironhand a Franconion (german) mercenary turned knight and was known for his iron proshtetic and his disregard for the authourity of the holy roman emperor. he's also the inventor of the term kiss my ass.
Interestingly, Miura (the author) was on record saying Gots had no influence on his creation of Guts, as he wasn't even aware of that historical figure until after Berserk was serialized, but found the coincidence very amusing.
Little thing about Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. Their appearances can change. I’m not just talking about the fact the design changes about every game (which it does) but I mean they can change into completely different weapons to fit the fighting style of the wielder.
2 *japanese* series duke it out here in this death battle who would be victorious? Berserk owned by *miura kentarou(rest in peace old man)*while soul calibur owned by *yotoriyama hiroaki*
Berserk is a big inspiration for the Fromsoftware developers and their game like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and so on. The Guts sword is basically also one of the weapons in Elden Ring, for example. Those games also have bosses that resemble character in the Guts Manga. I would love to see another animated show of preferably the whole Manga (it's really dark btw), animated by the same people who animated the Netflix Castelevania show. I really loved that art style and I think it would fit Berserk perfectly. The Castlevania show even pays homage to Berserk in a pretty badass fight scene with someone looking like Guts in his berserker armor. Castlevania btw is a rather short show that I can definitely recommend watching as well.
Berserk is one of the best dark fantasies ever written but yeah, it's really dark. First book had infanticide in it which is clearly extreme, but if you can take imagery like that it's worth a read. There is a point to most of it beyond shock value and it has some incredibly developed characters. Even Guts than just edgy scary man and he is the way he is for good reason. Like Guts went through so much trauma before you ever even get to the bat monster Griffith thing and really the man just wanted a hug. Whole murder rape thing happened just when he got that metaphorical hug too. Life just keeps kicking that man in the dick. But really, they are not wrong, there are a few characters in Berserk like Nightmare and Guts has killed them. So this is really kind of Monday for him more or less.

“It was too big to be called a ‘sword’. Massive, heavy, and far too rough, it was closer to a heap of raw iron”. ~ Many characters, Berserk, in reference to The Dragonslayer.
The story of Berserk is as "shounen" as you can get without being a shounen. It's very unique in it's impact in ALL media. Where many authors and games take direct inspiration from it. From the humanist story of Dark Souls, explained before Dark Souls is about human perseverance and passing on the flame. Other games like Soulstice, a game in development that if you watched the trailers you can immediately say it's Berserk inspired. Shounen is generally for young teens and it's a main character growth story. It could be cooking, sports, ect. But generally it's combat. What makes it not shounen is that it's literally seinen, which is generally dark stories for adults. What makes it shounen is the teachings. It's simply no matter how bad your life is or how many loved ones you lose or betray you, you must be willing to take the risk to love someone. Live your life even if the writing is literally on your neck that you will die. Even if you have to start again. Learn to love and live like a human again. Many people wrote Kentaro Miura how much they were on the brink and his story touched them because they could relate. Living in a hell but learning from Guts to push through the loss, fire, and certain suffering. Kentaro Miura died last year on May 6th and even now his apprentice is still deciding if he should continue the story, since it didn't end.
Also the artwork is beautiful and not only is the writing some of the best in terms of writing but the art is top tier as well. I recommend that if you won't be off put with dark stories to buy the hardcover. It's one of the most beautifully crafted stories, themes, and artworks. But as they said, it's not for the faint of heart.
In real life the 6 feet swords were used commonly in Europe by mercanaries and 1 historical hero William Wallace....yes they were kinda light but easy to use like spears
I heard that Berserk may still continue despite the author passing away but it’s undecided yet from what I heard. Honestly it deserves to have its conclusion. The characters suffered enough and regardless of how it ends as long as there’s closure I will be satisfied.
i grew up reading and watching berserk, and its the best dark fantasy story out there, imo its the best dark fantasy in all of fantasy, including anime, manga and real literature, and it pains my heart that we wont ever see a real end to the berserk saga with he death of its creator,R.I.P Kentarō Miura, you made my childhood so enjoyable!
FINALLY SOME BERSERK ON THIS AWESOME CHANNEL \o/ fun fact for you Beth and Ken, Berserk is one of the most influencial piece of art in the manga section. The sub genre of "dark fantasy" basically exist because of Kentaro Miura's Berserk, and things like the Dark Souls games wouldn't be the same without Berserk's influence. The success is that hype all around the world, that since Miura died last year (RIP), an old friend of him will keep the flame alive and continue the story. Not sure of that, but that might be the first time, because in Japan, a mangaka dies or stop with his manga(s), and it's not even questionnable to take his place like that.
I won't say Guts could have won this. Nightmare and Siegfried combined were able to defeat Abyss who was able to cause an Eclypse after releasing his power. In Nightmare inferno form he surpassed Eclypse. Moon level+ Meanwhile Guts is city block level
Not gonna lie, i kinda expected the sword to want guts to use him or something instead of thinking he’s gonna be destroyed. After all, inferno only cares for the strongest that can wield him and only fights those that are weaker or are using soul calibur. Hopefully they’ll fix that?
We thought that as well. In the end they explained that the reason Guts wouldn’t bite on that is because he doesn’t mess with demon things because of his past experience. But it still would’ve been cool to see the sword try 🙂
You both should go out of your way to do some more Berserk content. The story is incredible and deserves proper attention. I'm not really sure where you should start, but it's one of the most tragic stories out there.
Not sure where we would start either but everyone that knows the story has told us how compelling it is. But also sad to start something that may never get finished 😢
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 The story may never have Miura's ending, but it ends on a kind of "conclusive part", which may or not be to everyone liking but give a pretty nice ending (for the characters too) when it could be worse or rushed. As for where to start: The Manga. It would be a crime not to read the original story with its beautiful drawings :D (there's even a deluxe edition in english if you want a bigger format to appreciate it :D ) That's also the "complete" work compared to the animes which are not (on top of being adaptations, removing stuff for pacing, having characters changed or removed, etc.) But outside of that I'm not sure, the anime from 1997 is pretty good, you can see its time/limitations with some of its animation (which is not bad in itself), the music is good and it uses some of Miura's illustration/painting. The movies seems good too otherwise and are more recent in terms of animation but I only watched the first one and it was years ago, so I can't say much. The 2016 anime is usually not recommended for it's poor animation/CGI and camera angles, plus some of its sound effects weirdly chosen but it covers the story after a certain event, whereas the first anime and movies does before and until said event. I know that some videos on youtube covers the story (and some of them are pretty long too), but I never watched one of them and it would be told by someone else, with some parts being understood or envision by this person, which could be different from your own and/or the author's vision or perception (like any stories told by someone else I guess). As for the story it's very human (and badass) and goes to the whole spectrum of emotions!
Berserk is one of the MAJOR Dark Fantasy work of all times. Kentarou Miura, the author, started the series in 89 when he was just fresh out of school at 19yro. And it was his masterpiece on wich he worked on till this day. Unfortunatly the series will remain for the time being, unachieved, cause the author died last year of an Heart condition, wich had the whole of the fans and the manga community at large, shook to the core. There's being talks about if his assistants or guest artists would pick up the series and give it and ending by following Miura's notes, but nothing is certain and the family of Miura and the editors are considering their options and whats best. Regardless Berserk is something that is absolutly amazing, it is not for all public, it is very mature, very raw and dark, but it is also absolutly amazing and beautifull, Miura's artstyle and attention to details that is bordering on obssession and madness is just mezmerising. He alone was capable to make still images appear as they where ine movement and have flow and rhytm, wich is one of the reasons why we never had and never will have an animated adaptation that will do it justice...
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 the movies are ok, its by far the best attempt they've made since the 97 anime. But they also had to fine tune the process, cause the first movie animation with its blend of classic animation and use of 3d models was kinda wonky, by the 3rd movie they had it under hand, and it was much better... The 2016 anime that is ALL CGI is a utter catastrophe..., and the censoring doesn't really help...
Dark Souls wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Guts. Fighting monsters leagues above our abilities. Also fun fact: Guts's and his creator's zodiac sign happens to be Cancer like mine. 😊

Ironically, they left out the part where Griffith was horrifically tortured for an entire year, in every way possible; while Guts basically took over his entire army along with his girl. Tried to end himself, but physically couldn't, and his despair triggered the eclipse; A key point of his transformation into a demon king, where he lost all his humanity; in exchange for sacrificing his soldiers for the strength he lost from the torture; along with limitless power. I think any person in that position would do the same, if they were that broken. No sane person would come out of that without a mental illness of some kind.
guts, and by extension, "berserk", is one of the most influential characters in fiction. every character who uses a giant, fuck-off, bastard sword you see is influenced by guts: cloud from FF7, ichigo from bleach, zabuza from naruto, mihawk from one piece, haru from rave master, etc. modern fantasy would be nothing without miura-sensei's masterpiece. but it is a masterpiece that shall forever remain unfinished.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Berserk in essence is very Nietschian. Its a lot of juxtaposition of Dark and Light and one of the greater red herring is about Causality and Freewill. Berserk is also the story of a recovering Abuse victime. Guts in his own way tries to find his place in this cruel and unforgiving world and his worth. And slowly recovering from his past Traumas by litteraly facing "his Demons" head on and never let it go, evne if it would kill him. He's not the only character with an intersting character growth or narrative arc. Through out the story Miura added other characters that each have their own traumas and their own ways to face it. The theme of the manga is "Struggle". Guts is called through the story by some very important characters "the Struggler", someone who struggles with all his might against an unjust and cruel fate. Fans of Berserk like to call themselfs "Fellow Strugglers", cause the erratic release schedule of the manga through the decades was always a "Struggle" that put our patience to the test, but seeing the quality of Miura's work, we were all ready and accepting to wait, no matter how long it would take (some times we only had like 1 or two new CHAPTERS of the manga ...PER YEAR...)

He died doing what he wanted, no matter what. I bet he was happy.
Ah Guts.... probably the best character with the best story I have ever had the pleasure of reading, genuinely a great manga. It is really brutal but I do believe you need that brutality to really appreciate the quiet and beautifully human moments in the story. Don't know if there's anything you could react to about berserk... if anyone has any ideas I am all for it!
Might be something we have to just check out on our own 🤔
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 if you find the time you definitely should. There's even an anime from 1997 that is pretty good as an introduction, however there is quite a bit of cut moment, so the manga is the definitive version.
@@kuranhelix278 golden age arc movies are better
RIP to Kentaro Miura, the writer of Berserk. He left behind a legend.
😢
In case you couldn't understand what Nightmare was saying. From beginning to end, he said
"At last. At last the time has come!"
"Fool! Tremble in my darkness!"
"What's wrong?"
"Weakling!"
"Fear my wrath!"
"Tremble in fear."
"Soul Caliber!"
"Impressive. "
"Burn!"
"Ah, is that it?"
"Darkness. Will consume everything!"
That's it. Hope this helped. One of the best Death Battles ever!
Thanks for helping us with what he was saying as sometimes it was tough to hear 🤗
One Piece is another one we keep hearing about that we need to check out 😅
I'd throw Vinland Saga into the mix too personally, but yeah, this.
One piece hhhhhhhhhh your kidding me bro
Funfact: Berserk is the inspiration for Demon Souls and the Darksouls series and has a reference to it in almost every Fromsoft entry. Also Guts's Greatsword is also in almost all their games. Berserk is also the grandfather of all dark fantasies
Hehe, to see someone's first reaction to the story of Guts is amusing to see. Reminds me when I found him the first time and just stared at the manga in awe and confusion...like I was 12...aaaand this put anime and manga in a WHOLE new light for me. XD
We were not prepared for that story 😂😱😨
Oh Guts from Berserk. Nice. That's just one of these most famous anime of all time. :> And the most cruelsome bloodthirsty one. Gutts is the manifastation and symbolism of ironwill so thats why he survive so much.
The Song in this "Hai Yai Forces" in Berserk is one of the greatest songs in anime history btw.
Good job Beth :>
Story or ironwill for Bethany. Bloodthirsty for Ken. Sounds like it’s up our alley 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I'll take both. Entertainment has many forms. Laugh, Love, Hate, Anger, Distrust, Love Making, Violence, Kindness, Loyality.. because it is all a part of us.
Guts is an awesome character. And berserk is an awesome story.

@@ZotharReborn yes it's all coincidental I'm sure.

No thats not true Kentaro Miura said that he had no influence of him creating guts.
I. LOVE. the line they used to close out gut's explanation section.
Little thing about Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. Their appearances can change. I’m not just talking about the fact the design changes about every game (which it does) but I mean they can change into completely different weapons to fit the fighting style of the wielder.
Interesting 😯
7:25 My heart stopping thinking pc was about to crash or something lol.
Sorry 😯🤗 missed cutting that part out. Apparently we didn’t have our phone which is our camera, on airplane mode 😖
Castlevania is one we plan on checking out at some point 🙂
Still one of my favorite Death Battles.
😎🤟
Kind of a Monday for him 😂
Guts is an embodiment of badass. I can't wait to see y react to more Death Battles.

The demon scene literally came out of nowhere. It threw everyone off when The Band of the Hawk died the way they did.
"out of nowhere" aside from the first 3 volumes, Zodd and Skull Knight telling Guts about it, Wyald and Zodd discussing it, the appearance of the Cobra Count, Slug Lord and Rosine killing half of the band of the hawk who were left behind at camp, Griffith showing Guts the egg of the king and, the other four God Hand appearing to Griffith while he was imprisoned
yeah out of nowhere
@@snuffcassette7555 Yeah, like I said, out of nowhere. No one expected it to be that swift, especially for a bunch of main characters, and I wasn't trying to spoil it either. So, like I said, out of nowhere as in surprise. No one said it made no sense or plain senseless. Please read, and don't make the Berserk community look bad. Twitter did that enough.
@@yusifudo46 it was surprising, yes, but not "out of nowhere," which you are misusing.
@@ardmate No. It was fine. Out of nowhere does not mean stupid, unfitting, and nonsensical. It still caused a much more drastic tone and world building shift in the story overall when it happened and it alone changed the perception of the story. Out of nowhere. Not out of place.

Hopefully his apprentice finishes the story. And thanks for telling us about Shounen and Seinen. 🙂
Most darkest character ever...and his writer Kentaro Miura who passed away on may 6 2021....r.i.p man and thank you for making an awesome character
😢
In real life the 6 feet swords were used commonly in Europe by mercanaries and 1 historical hero William Wallace....yes they were kinda light but easy to use like spears
Not that easy*
Thanks for adding some historical context 🙂
As brutal as Berserk is i still find it to be one of the most beautiful stories ive ever read
😊
I heard that Berserk may still continue despite the author passing away but it’s undecided yet from what I heard. Honestly it deserves to have its conclusion. The characters suffered enough and regardless of how it ends as long as there’s closure I will be satisfied.
Comment I've seen and agree with.
No matter what the conclusion is, the last shot should be dragonslayer on the hill of swords
Berserk also inspired Tales of Berseria from Bandai Namco's famous "Tales of" jrpg series.
And all FromSoft games.

Guts is basically the Ash Williams of anime. You can't help but want him to win with all the stuff he's been through, dealing with demons and all.
Thank you, i remember recommending this a while ago
Our pleasure. It was fun learning more about these two characters and heir franchises 🙂
They didn’t even cover Guts’ entire story…..It’s somehow even more gruesome than what they mentioned here
FINALLY SOME BERSERK ON THIS AWESOME CHANNEL \o/ fun fact for you Beth and Ken, Berserk is one of the most influencial piece of art in the manga section.
Thanks for the fun facts on Berserk! 😀 Sad that the creator died before getting to finish it 😢
Berserk is quite literally my favorite thing ever. In my opinion, the greatest story ever written.
I won't say Guts could have won this. Nightmare and Siegfried combined were able to defeat Abyss who was able to cause an Eclypse after releasing his power. In Nightmare inferno form he surpassed Eclypse.
Moon level+
Meanwhile Guts is city block level
I love your videos, Really entertaining. Please consider doing a death battle reaction of Sepiroth vs Vergil.
Glad you are enjoying the videos and thanks for recommending a death battle for us to check out 😀
Not gonna lie, i kinda expected the sword to want guts to use him or something instead of thinking he’s gonna be destroyed.
It would be a crime not to read the original story with its beautiful drawings :D (there's even a deluxe edition in english if you want a bigger format to appreciate it :D )
That's also the "complete" work compared to the animes which are not (on top of being adaptations, removing stuff for pacing, having characters changed or removed, etc.)
But outside of that I'm not sure, the anime from 1997 is pretty good, you can see its time/limitations with some of its animation (which is not bad in itself), the music is good and it uses some of Miura's illustration/painting.
Such an intense fight :3
WELL DONE BETHANY haha, poor Siegfried haha :>
Don't worry, Ken maybe next time TvT
I love it :0 🤍🤍

Did you check out the Netflix movies on it? 🤔
