James is what you’d call a functioning depressive. It’s like he’s nearly there for connection, but something continues to hold him back. Adding to that with the traumatic burglary, I am proud of him for keeping it together for so long. He seems misunderstood. He’s obviously smart, funny, and passionate about history and antiques, and he’s had some difficulty in his life. James, wherever you are, I hope you are well.
I think I'm more surprise at the fact that he was married twice and not that he was divorced twice. What a difficult man to dealt with, but Ruth really hit a home run on this one. Shows how brilliant her mind works.
James is not denying, he is frightened at the thought of his own Death and grieving the anticipated loss of his exquisite home. This show was many about 20 years ago I think (?). I hope James found peace and did leave some kind of documentation about his collections. I think James is a treasure.
He sold the house, and finally he is gone. So happy it’s been given to a couple who appreciates it for what it really was meant to be, a tourist attraction.
Great show , this one. Twists and turns and personalities. But I’ve gotta hand it to the camera person how captured the real lasting beauty of the old fine pieces . The lighting was excellent !
The episodes where the owner has zero interest in taking suggestions are always a bit frustrating but I will say I love his collection and the light in the building falling over the items is so serene/would make for a still life artist's dream.
So much for his Godson Robin. He sold the house in 2010, to a rich veterinarian. The house is now empty of all the hoard. Events are held there. James has moved on with his collection to a new home. Poor Robin probably was led around with this bait for years.
Well then I am glad for him. This home was too much for him at this stage of his life without a wife and children to help carry the burden. GOOD for JAMES!
Are you KIDDING!? A 1 b/r apartment in NYC and $2,100 - $2,400 in London is what it costs per month right now, for what James is paying to live in a mansion. He's paying less than $2,000 mo. to keep the place up - and complaining about it (!?) Migod, people get real, this is 2022 not 1902 - where else does he think he can live for that amount? I'm flabbergasted by the unreality of the VERY modest cost for running such a place, and everybody seems to be outraged at the amount. A most rude and disagreeable man - don't know why Ruth bothered with him.
One need income to pay that utility and building repair cost and not just move to cheaper wing and let everything you build rot. Money is needed and he asked knowing fully well you will mock and claim he is too cheaply made.
And he probably could have sold them at the car boot show, if they were in good condition. Maybe even barter some of the items for some of the things he got at the event.
James does what James wants, based on his feelings at that particular moment. Which is ok, it's his house and land, but Ruth had some fantastic plans for more income.

I dealt with a hoarder for years, definitely dealing with mental illness or some sort of trauma. They cannot let go of a cardboard box never mind “treasures”. If he sold this house he for sure took his hoard with him
The following year, James sold the house to people who he thought would take good care of it. This surprised me at first but he mentioned robbery when showing the lock of hair to Ruth. If it was the armed robbery that others mentioned in the comments, maybe it made him feel unsafe living in the house and he started thinking about selling the place at that time. It would explain why he decided not to follow Ruth's advice after first showing enthusiasm. What was the point if he was thinking about leaving soon? He could leave all that work to the new owners.
Absolute Treasure Trove!! Reminds me alot of Dennis Severs house which we had the chance to Visit from Canada few years back... this place is like getting lost in Time... has so much Potential
WOW, I love every inch of it...the taxidermy, the glass domes, the scent of leather books and furniture...indeed I love it all and the Odd Socks was perfect as was the flea market...this was great fun...!!!
I'd love to have seen a video of James having to pack up all his stuff and move it into a new, presumably much smaller space when the house sold. What a train wreck that must have been.
I looked this up and it seems it was not a happy outcome. In 2011 after this show aired the house was broken into and the owner held hostage as the house was robbed. Afterward the owner sold the house to a man named Graham Oliver (not the godson the old owner had talked about) . If you type in the halls name you can find the website from the new owner. It is sad that I could find no record if the house's amazing collection of treasures stayed with the house .
He sold a lot of the stuff he had via an antique dealers auction. Pocketed the 1.75million he got for house and grounds and lives a recluse now not far away.
As a maximalist and owning an eclectic collection (in far smaller scale cause I leave in an apartment) myself, totally understand his passion on preserving these exquisite interiors. Reception rooms are splendid but dusty, storage areas too cluttered and rather a hoarder's nest... I believe he changed his attitude towards Ruth cause he had already decided in his mind to sell this property (sold next year). A smaller house would be more manageable for a bachelor in his age.
According to BBC News, 21 March 2012, there was an attempted robbery and Cartland had managed to "raise the alarm and the intruders fled, leaving some of his antiques in the garden." Re. its current ownership, from the house website: "Graham Oliver adored Carnfield from the moment he set eyes on it in 2010, and although [partner] Heidi took longer to persuade, James Cartland knew his home needed a female touch and the motivation of a man who shared his passion and love of the house. It soon became clear to James that this couple were ideal. Having also uncovered much of the history of Carnfield, James lured Graham and Heidi into his excitement of the hall, and in March of 2011, he sold the Hall to Graham Oliver." Who knows what happened between Mr. Cartland and his godson, given his somewhat mercurial temperament depicted in the episode. There are numerous articles about the house, its owners and activities, and its ghosts if one googles Carnfield Hall.
No idea how old the following information is, but from the website: _Now James Cartland has moved on to Ashbourne (with all of his wonderful artifacts) and has handed over the serious responsibility of Carnfield Hall to Graham Oliver, an eminent and ground breaking orthopaedic vet. Graham lives with his partner Heidi and her dog Cuthbert, who is lovingly known as Custard by some. The next project is to restore the woodland which hasn’t been touched for over one hundred years. Three fishponds, one medieval and the others probably dating back to at least 1600 are totally silted up and full of undergrowth. Financial help will be needed. They are shown on the earliest plan of 1693 and the walks and trails on later plans. In May the bluebells stretch for a shimmering mile. It is hoped to be able to open this to the general public in the future._
For those calling him a "hoarder," this is exactly the same way the Victorians used to decorate... with amazing amounts of treasure all over... they took the 1 or 2 year Grand Tour in Europe and came back with tons of stuff.
They didn't treat those stuff this way at all, everything was not kept out all at once and they all had a proper place when out then they went back in storage. They changed the decor. This was hoarding.

Walking through the house is like walking into a different world and you just. An’t help but be inspired to want to live in that other world for just a little while in the very least.
As someone who is bipolar, there is nothing in this *at all* that would help you come to this conclusion ("diagnosis"). Beyond a slightly querky man who changes his mind about things and is stuck in his ways. But that isn't what being neurodivergent, let alone manic-depressive, is all about.

"Ruth doesn't understand" he says. I don't think he understands that he's trying to run an estate that's meant to be runned by dozens of workers all by himself, AND wanting to make more income without extra helpers, which is impossible!

She doesn't speak kindly of pensioners. Quite rude actually. Same thing with Alex on the hotel inspector. I wonder if it has something to do with the hotel and restaurant industry. They seem ageist.
Way too much stuff....so overwhelming and just dirty. The kitchen and pantry were down right disgusting. I never understand why people call for help if they do not actually want help.
I enjoy this content. Iam also attrached to cha nel showing abandoned mansion estate. Sometimes the abandoned places have a good portion of the contents included. Comparing this channel with the abandoned channels, like "brothers of decay", I can see how the egotistical, greedy & proud, stubborn people die or move on, without regard for relatives of the furture. Oh well. Material wealth is curious, indeed.
I thought this particular program was interesting in I'm a collector as well but not to the magnitude this gentleman has become. But I think that keeping track of all the Clutter has cluttered his mind a bit
Commenting from the far future of 2022: James is clearly a bit fragile, a bit disconnected. There's very little difference between him and a hoarder living out of a shipping container filled with junk. Eventually I assume he'll withdraw from the world completely and that will be that. I feel bad for his godson.
@@MsMesem Originally, it had been James' wish to bequeath the estate to his godson. But I don't think the godson could be prepared to take care of such a huge responsibility. And now James has moved out & sold it anyway.
I love antiques and old houses full of them, but not in the way this house is, ( it would look amazing with one quarter,or less, of the things it currently has), but it's his house and he likes it the way it is, fair enough. I guess this guy wanted a miracle when he claims he expected Ruth to tell him how to make money, because obviously he wasn't willing to do anything to accomplish that... Some people don't deserved nor they want to be helped.
Such harsh comments regarding this man ,maybe instead of being mean you would of done some research and read how he was robbed in his own home. That is very traumatic and surely very few of us could continue to live there .As far as what he does with his money or antiques that is up to him, worry more about your own business instead of others fortune.
He reminds me of a horder although with style and knowledge. Its unfortunate that he's reticent about cataloguing his collection. As a collector myself I know how important it is that the various items I've collected are properly tagged and a detailed appraisal done. It would be horrible if after I'm gone these things ended up undervalued in some yard sale and the knowledge of what they are lost forever.
He doesn't and it would be overwhelming just for one person to keep up with. These houses need a staff of many to keep it clean both inside and outside.
Everytime the narrator uses the term “curiosities”, for James’s collections, I’m waiting to see a table with deformed human heads in in formaldehyde jars.
I've watched many of Ruth Watson's 'Abode' videos and I think that she has very good ideas but often her method of communication can come across as rather 'rough' and nagging. Perhaps James Cartland is correct - charm school would be useful for polishing her demeanor!
There have been moments in which Ruth has seemed to take a certain amount of glee in cutting someone to the bone. There is a difference between driving home a much-needed point and being vicious.
What a rude man. This is one time when the house needs to go to someone who will do what it takes to keep it going, not behave like a pampered child. I would have left him sitting there with his rude manners.

Omg, I LOVE that dollhouse!!!!
Ruth doesn't seem to catch on there's a very fine line between collection and hoarding he doesn't want to get rid of any of it it's all his all his
I think she knew, or at least suspected. Perhaps her suggestions to turn the attics into a children’s museum were a test. (Which he clearly failed)
I think he’s fun but abit nutty and used to having his own way…He’s awfully short later for someone asking for help..I think it’s like most hoarders..it’s about power and control..I love all the activity on the ground…She seems to have really helped him…
We called that A STUBBORN OLD MAN. Too old to pickup anything even though he is 60 + only.
Ruth is vicious when it comes to describing aging in this series.
I have noted the same.
She doesn't speak kindly of pensioners. Quite rude actually. Same thing with Alex on the hotel inspector. I wonder if it has something to do with the hotel and restaurant industry. They seem ageist.
James Cartland sold Carnfield Hall to Graham Oliver in March 2011.
FABULOUS collection!
I really enjoyed this episode .
Way too much stuff....so overwhelming and just dirty. The kitchen and pantry were down right disgusting. I never understand why people call for help if they do not actually want help.
Perhaps the idea of being featured on an Abode Show.
I enjoy this content. Iam also attrached to cha nel showing abandoned mansion estate. Sometimes the abandoned places have a good portion of the contents included.
Comparing this channel with the abandoned channels, like "brothers of decay",
I can see how the egotistical, greedy & proud, stubborn people die or move on, without regard for relatives of the furture.
Oh well.
Material wealth is curious, indeed.
Do they ever go back years later to see how they made it? Like 10 or so years
Imagine being foreclosed on and the government turning it into a museum of your life.
I thought this particular program was interesting in I'm a collector as well but not to the magnitude this gentleman has become. But I think that keeping track of all the Clutter has cluttered his mind a bit
Great video! I’m wondering how he’s doing in 2022, and how’s the house?
Since you posted this comment, several people have posted updates in the comments. Robbery and selling the house are part of the story.
Commenting from the far future of 2022: James is clearly a bit fragile, a bit disconnected. There's very little difference between him and a hoarder living out of a shipping container filled with junk. Eventually I assume he'll withdraw from the world completely and that will be that. I feel bad for his godson.
Godson? I HAD godparents. Never expected nor received anything from them.
@@MsMesem Originally, it had been James' wish to bequeath the estate to his godson. But I don't think the godson could be prepared to take care of such a huge responsibility. And now James has moved out & sold it anyway.
So a "Car Boot" is a Flea Market(?)
Essentially, yes.
They want her to wave a magic wand and everything will be Perfect and biils will all disappear.
The idea? A giant flea market. Why stop there? Bring in the carnival, kiddie rides, cotton candy, clowns and the beared lady for entertainment.
What is a “beared lady”? A female bear??
@@johnpickford4222 Yes, caught me with my pants down. Got to be more diligent with the proofreading.
I am expecting the woman in black to appear any moment.
Such harsh comments regarding this man ,maybe instead of being mean you would of done some research and read how he was robbed in his own home. That is very traumatic and surely very few of us could continue to live there .As far as what he does with his money or antiques that is up to him, worry more about your own business instead of others fortune.
Wouldn't the car boot events ruin the grass???
A public sale would generate income and make the home mor liveable.
Sometimes it is as if people expect her to come with a suitcase of money and hand it to them.
My suspicion is that he also did not want to leave it to his godchild, wouldn't be surprised if they fell out.
How on earth do you keep all the things dusted and clean
He doesn't and it would be overwhelming just for one person to keep up with. These houses need a staff of many to keep it clean both inside and outside.
@@marydenny5231 exactly
It's Carnfield Hall, not Cornfield Hall. From the website, it looks like there were significant events for quite some time, but nothing since 2017.
I see another comment that their Facebook page is up to date.
James' inner curmudgeon comes out at the end of this. NO! NOTHING CAN BE DONE.....JUST FORGET IT!!🤣
Miss Haversham.
His great uncle was her grandfather? She died in 2000 at 99.
Everytime the narrator uses the term “curiosities”, for James’s collections, I’m waiting to see a table with deformed human heads in in formaldehyde jars.
Beautiful ❤️🙏
James seems a bit Looney to be Honest 🤪👍 wonderful collecting tho. Ruth Watson is a Gem🏆💕🌼🍃
He needs a bigger house so he can collect more dust , lol
Yes, her being negatively judgemental, is insulting.
This man is barely keeping the demons at bay and if too much changes too quickly his hoarding will spiral out of control.
WOW !
@@twistoffate4791yet she has also become teary-eyed in the face of a dear wife who has become beleaguered with the upkeep of her mansion.
Looks like he sold up, what happened to the inheritance for the Godson?
Likely, he is still having the apple dangled in front of him.
I would say this is a relief, inherit a house like this could be more of a problem.
He is probably relieved! Instead he'll get cash!
BUT... I believe England has a high death tax! 🤑🤑🤑
If he'd want to get connection, he would just have to go upstairs.
I think James got some needed company. He's a user.
I would like to have a show telling us how the Houses are doing now. Thank You
Your curiousity could lead you to your own search for answers
What a rude man. This is one time when the house needs to go to someone who will do what it takes to keep it going, not behave like a pampered child. I would have left him sitting there with his rude manners.
