It is now 2022. In spite of a rocky start, I just looked at current info. They are up and running so they must have done things right and have continued to do so. Bravo for them.. It was and still is a stunningly beautiful estate.
Took me a moment, but I just realised they were featured in another youtube channel. "War Hero Stories that Will Move You to Tears | Pentillie Castle Part 1" on "American Viscountess" if anyone is interested to see what the place looks like now.
I felt bad that the woman was so upset and cried. On the other hand, here is an opportunity to create something extraordinary by listening to the experts, and not taking things personally.
I agree... if one is in possession of a property of national importance it does deserve restoration treatment by people who have previous relevant experience. I do hope all has worked out well for the venture. I'm off to look at their website now. G Ire
@@gleefulme9617 The bear wasnt hiring a designer who knew what looked great. The flowery cottage look was dated & not apt to draw most people in on a webpage. I think the bear finally consulted a good designer.

I'd like this series to do a "where are they now". Did all these people with these big homes manage to make a go or did they bale out? How has Covid affected them all? How long did it take to pay off the inheritance bill? I know I'd like to see all the fix's and completed projects.
if u google the castle or estate for each episode most have current google reviws and photos.. pentile castle is up & running currently! and they figured out the seating!!
Tax man always has to be paid straight away as far as I know even if you have to borrow the money to pay..more expense with huge interest. It's as if governments want people to go under. When you think how huge these estates were and now some of them have mo land left. I know an estate in Ireland which belonged to a friends family. When her mother grew up here in 1800s there was 25000 acres..today all that's left is 1 quarter of the house ( the other 3/4 was knocked to avoid daylight tax which was calculated on the amount of windows in a house...and 175acres. Another estate beside me has gone from 2500acres to 150acres. Its owner a famous business man has added a lot to the house and bought 100s of acres around it as these farms come up for sale. We're going back to large estates but this time the landlords are Irish and give hardly any employment. The little employment there is is given to shipped in people from foreign lands and they're probably paid a pittance but the only few good paying jobs ate given to Irish but you could count them on 1 hand. At least with the big English landlords they employed so many. Even smaller estates could have at least 20 people employed and a lot also provided room and board. So they call it progress but I've actually got my doubts with so many looking for work and a roof over their heads.
We visited Heligan in 2013 on our trip to the UK, having also visited the Millenium Project a few days previously. We were absolutely bowled over by what had been achieved by the team restoring those gardens. The difference is, of course, that Heligan House is separate entirely from the Estate gardens. Here it is the castle and garden/estate as a whole. I wish them every success.
They were a family who had not lived in a grand manner and suddenly they had to make a plan on a grand scale. Not consulting a paint expert was probably part of their habits of economy. So was doing as much on their own (vacuumig minutes before the press came) as possible and going to a local decorator instead of someone who was more widely experienced. I am so happy to learn that they have made a great success of it all.
Why would they take on a designer for advice then not do ANYTHING she suggest as a professional ?? What a wasted opportunity ! The woman has the very expertise the owners need to be successful
It's my understanding (from a previous show) that the title has to be transferred to a family member 7 years prior to the death of the owner to avoid the taxes. How horrible she never did that.
The hermit was a very selfish woman knowing the inheritance tax that would be transfered to new owners. Hope her greed is documented through the family history so every generation knows what can happen without planning.
There is words one can choose, and a tone in the voice one can try, to help calm down the upset part. Ruth also has a really annoing schreeching voice, which does not help at all. I got the feeling she pushed for the sake of "good" TV. Anyways, what a GRAND country house and property!! My favorite one in this series.
I agree with Ruth they should have consulted the experts for such an important estate. They could also receive government help if they use approved National help. Maybe they have by now.
It seems like a tax left over from yesteryear, a blunt instrument, not geared towards encouraging family to maintain and develop historic properties, which is what all the British, National Trust and tourists want. The tax should be assessed/ levied differently in this modern era. Speaking as an inhabitant of a former British colony, the brutal ingenuity of taxation measures is a historic edifice of its own... I think this is my favorite of all the homes I've seen in this series so far (which is most of them). What a beautiful, classic home, with clean lines and not a lot of gaudy fuss. Beautiful land and views. So many surprises, too--that bathing house! Lovely family, as well.
I love this series! I only wish is they go back and give us updates on the places, people running them. Such beautiful places even before they begin to restore it! I pray one day I will get a chance to come from the USA to experience all the splendor! I would love to work/own one of the beautiful castles!
Sorry, I felt Ruth was BRUTAL with Sarah just minutes before press showed up! My Gosh, didn't she have enough pressure on her shoulders at that particular moment? It's fine that Ruth wants everything modern and beige contemporary, but not everyone likes that. Sarah put a lot of work into those boards and Ruth would have done well to acknowledge the level of work and curb her horrific timing for the critique! These folks aren't professionals, but they're doing their best, and she failed to appreciate the toll of sweat equity.
I agree! They were thrown in to the deep end and doing their best after spending 6 million pounds! The few minutes before a big group showed up is not the time to pick on them. I like Ruth Watson but this time, she could have been a bit more patient.
The people who own this are your normal, run of the mill village people. They are not the super rich who come with all their attitudes and demands. The villagers were fantastic, and they will surely support the new owners as much as possible. Just word of mouth advertising can go a long way in getting the word out about this lovely place. In due time, it will all come together. The blond lady in the blue jacket has wonderful ideas, but all I see are dollar signs every time she has an idea. Top notch designers, paint specialists, etc. all cost a fortune. The work needed here is very substantial. Where is all that money coming from? They may not have it to spend. What a dilemma.
Most beautiful and appealing house I’ve ever seen on Abode. I liked the people, but it was nuts not to get guidance from professional restoration and preservation experts. Nuts. I am disappointed we saw only a few of the rooms, so little of the house.
2000 acres, wow that is a lot of property. This is only my 2nd show and I am so enjoying it. It is a national treasure, and needs to be treated as such.
What a lovely person Ruth is I love her honesty and professionalism!! Sarah is weak and Ted is stubborn shame! Truly amazing you can lead a horse to water but can't make it drink. Mediocre isn't what they should strive for.
I wish the mentor lady had explained that they needed to style the estate not to their liking but to the grandure the estate deserves. I thought they weren't going to live there anyway but if they do they can style their private section to their own liking. The attraction for visitors is the grandure.
agreed 100 % Plus the heart and soul of the owners shows up when they choose their own decor with a little help but ultimately their own taste and artistic uniqueness. For example I have decorated a few homes and without any expertise decorators and yet I have received so many compliments on the warmth and uniqueness of each room.
Im glad to see they made a success of this house. Daughter Sammie and her husband took over running the business in 2017. It's still available for hire as a retreat home or special occasion venue.
I feel that, that type of inheritance tax is nothing but greed. People who are inheriting the castle, will have enough costs for repairs and the running of the estate. Shame shame.

I would just like to give the editor of this episode a huge shout out for the moment at 39:05 where Sarah is holding a knife when Ruth is talking about how much she hates the mood boards, I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at the implication she was ready to stab her 😂
Well I've just watched " the American viscountess " channel featuring the castle and it is actually beautifully decorated, nothing to do with the mother's mood boards. But the funny thing was she was saying that this is what she wanted to do from the beginning, that she knew exactly what she wanted and she had do e that🤣🤣 By the way,the exterior colour looks much lighter.🤣🤣🤣
the interior of this house appears so understated, but the exterior up on that hill with the river makes this a top 5 or 6 out of this whole series for me. These houses are incredible, hopefully I visit one day to see a few!
The house looks like it was once stone and brick ... now it looks like somebody took some beige paint and covered the entire place with it. What I'm trying to say is that it looks out of place.
Ruth is brutal but I agree with her critique. They’re not making over a she-shed. Stop putting your own stamp to something so important and grand. The color they chose is off and the lady’s taste in decor is too old fashioned, and not in a classic kinda way.
Something crucial is missing from this programme: how are people supposed to afford all of the repairs and experts when they've inherited a badly run down and large property with massive taxes? I'd be hesitant about using Ruth's experts as how could I afford them?
I know right. I'm thinking the British Establishment really doesn't care because a six million pound inheritance tax bill is ridiculous. One would think they would be trying to save these extraordinary and always historic homes??
I looked it up, but evidently, they have given up the B&B aspect, because all I could see was renting the entire house for much more than I could afford. I guess I won't be visiting there anytime soon. Beautiful place, though.
Bless this family, they understood that they were out of their element and reached to Ruth for help. Hopefully they have learned how to style grand, it’s not an easy style in the modern age with most modern styles that are geared towards streamline and mostly neutral palettes. These things takes trial and error, so having those with experience really helps saves them a lot of errors when making decisions that could set them back. Glad the family pulled through and was easy to work with, understandable with the family past tension of why they hesitated taking on the project, but the building certainly called to them and they reconsidered together to try to make it work. So far, it seems it has thankfully for everyone.
A magnificent estate. So sad that they chose not to take Ruth's advice and hire a professional interior design team. They obviously went with the local person. The house deserved so much better than the nondescript poorly done interiors. There are so many beautiful country estates all over England, Ireland and Scotland that are well planned and executed. A pity this isn't one of them.
This beautiful place featured in the TV series ‘Delicious’ with Dawn French. Like Highclere (Downton Abbey), being the host home for TV must be a great income booster.
I was disappointed in a little bit of a way that in the overall view of the property there is a beautiful pool that could be utilized as well for the public to help generate funds
Oh that was such a display of not being able to handle criticism that is for your own good and emotional immaturity, No one loves criticism and also not everyone is an interior designer. That was disappointing to see but Im happy to hear that they've succeeded since then
This channel is horrible about that. Half their episodes are unwatchable. Even worse, a lot of original-content channels are adding ridiculously loud and manipulative music, too. It's aggravating.
I agree with every post regarding the ridiculously loud background noise, and not having a good solid voiced narrarator. PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PRESENTATION FOR MORE ENJOYABLE VIEWING.
Why don't people listen to expert advice? They could have absolutely "hit the ball out of the park' with the paint color! I agreed with Ruth about the fabrics as well. Those fabrics were not unappealing but just looked 1980's country house rather than on a grand, national, five star level. Beautiful, sweet family though and the property is incredible! Congratulations to them!
I think they need to fire this woman is spreading dissatisfaction over everything this wonderful family is doing. It looks like their open house is a great success and is very much enjoyed by their visitors while she is walking around still criticizing their efforts.
What makes Pentillie so incredibly beautiful is not the house itself so much as the idyllic setting surrounding it. The river Tamar flowing in a wide serpentine swath through the lush landscape is perfection! The original Lord Tillie had a wonderful sense of perspective with the estate's buildings, the 'castle' being positioned like a jewel in it's lovely setting. It would have been just amazing in the day.... Fast forwarding into 2022, it's really great that the estate is doing so well under the supervision of the owners' daughter. Although it has been renovated to a very modern standard, it still retains a bit of the classical charm. A very comfortable and classy hotel atmosphere that's in the mode of a modern country house, with some of the antiques and paintings still incorporated... it must be lucrative though nothing like the former grandeur historically it must have been once upon a time. The modernized mansion could be anywhere, though the surrounding countryside is undoubtedly the most gorgeous in Cornwall 💚
Unbelievable... Inexperienced people given the opportunity to benefit from the experience of someone with true business acumen & they're too stubborn & arrogant to take it! ❤️🙏
I like the colour and the smile of their daughter.Beautiful familly i Wish them the outcome that they wish. Its big and its going to be successful!🌺💐🚩❤🎉😘
I wonder why there isn't better estate planning to pay for the inheritance tax...usually people carry life insurance in order to cover that cost or use some other strategy.
What a strangely austere facade. It's forbidding looking, and even stark. But the grounds are magical and if they can get the interior to be warm and comfortable, it's got a spectacular location and hopefully they've done well with it.
I don't know why Ruth has to be so rude to people. To call the owners formerly "paupers", to make a snarky, condescending crack about " the little woman haberdasher from town", and to say that the outdoor seating arrangements look like it belongs at a youth hostel shows a lack of class on her part.
2024 now and you can stay there for 5 nights in August for £9k ! looks lovely . 11 bedrooms so 22 people could stay at £409 each for 5 nights which is really not that bad! Good on them

mis-typed hearing aid
This channel is horrible about that. Half their episodes are unwatchable. Even worse, a lot of original-content channels are adding ridiculously loud and manipulative music, too. It's aggravating.
I agree with every post regarding the ridiculously loud background noise, and not having a good solid voiced narrarator. PLEASE CHANGE YOUR PRESENTATION FOR MORE ENJOYABLE VIEWING.
Apparently no one in UK has ever heard of geothermal heating!
The landscape is beautiful
The daughter is beautiful!
I think that the room decore boards were quite nice, and this lady critical remarks are not needed. She's a guide not the ruler.
I like how blunt Ruth is I wish everyone was like that all the time
🇨🇦 no inheritance tax here, thank god!
I think they need to fire this woman is spreading dissatisfaction over everything this wonderful family is doing. It looks like their open house is a great success and is very much enjoyed by their visitors while she is walking around still criticizing their efforts.
The background music is so loud I can hardly hear what this guy is saying
Why didn’t they ever show the pool?
i like the color they painted the mansion
It seems Mad Jimmy turned the maxim, “you can’t take it with you“ on its head.
Perhaps he decided, “If I can’t take it with me, by God I shan’t go!“.
Unbelievable... Inexperienced people given the opportunity to benefit from the experience of someone with true business acumen & they're too stubborn & arrogant to take it! ❤️🙏
The owners have no taste and this project was way over their head! They should have listened to professional. Lol
Love this series but the music reminds me of Halloween…🎃👻
The fabrics that are in the house now are actually very beautiful and modern. So it seems that things have been changed a bit.
inheritance tax is barbaric.
I thought that Ruth was a bit harsh on Sarah, after all it IS a country house is it not?
"There is no absolutes, I absolutely agree"
Absolutely beautiful. I just want to know how many total rooms ...just splendid
We don't have an inheritance tax in our country, but we'll have to pay taxes if we decide to sell the property afterwards.
That widow sounds a piece of work. She even caused trouble between him and his father
I like the colour and the smile of their daughter.Beautiful familly i Wish them the outcome that they wish. Its big and its going to be successful!🌺💐🚩❤🎉😘
This is a even a great task and challenge for a top designer! I hope they went for real professionals!
One million, with taxes and upkeep? It won't divide well, among 5 people. What a blessing though. I do hope they get the funding it deserves.
Can you raise the volume on the music? I can still sort of hear the narrator.
lol so true
I wonder why there isn't better estate planning to pay for the inheritance tax...usually people carry life insurance in order to cover that cost or use some other strategy.
Why ask for professional help and then disregard their advice?
What a strangely austere facade. It's forbidding looking, and even stark. But the grounds are magical and if they can get the interior to be warm and comfortable, it's got a spectacular location and hopefully they've done well with it.
I don't know why Ruth has to be so rude to people. To call the owners formerly "paupers", to make a snarky, condescending crack about " the little woman haberdasher from town", and to say that the outdoor seating arrangements look like it belongs at a youth hostel shows a lack of class on her part.
I liked the wallpaper and fabrics, they look classic to me. And they will hold their style .
Good story but the music over the voice is sometimes too loud.
This "advisor" is remarkably and horribly negative and underming!
yes, a little pompous for sure. If you just mute her and watch her body language you will perceive this absolutley!
2024 now and you can stay there for 5 nights in August for £9k ! looks lovely . 11 bedrooms so 22 people could stay at £409 each for 5 nights which is really not that bad! Good on them
The color looks fine really
Drama and tension make this program feel so American. :P
I like this family. Their neighbors seem to like them, too. Life is brief, be kind and happy!
Music is too loud to catch up with the words
How does the UK expect owners to preserve these historic estates and also pay these enormous inheritance taxes? It seems to be a great paradox.
