You saved my bacon. Hauling in some bales on my Massey 168 last night and it stuck in gear. Looked up your video, and with the light on my phone and a long bar, I got back in action. You’re a lifesaver..😄
I grew up on a beef cattle farm in S Ky (260 acres) we square baled hay, raised corn & tobacco along with 80 to 100 head of cattle. We had a 1974 Massey-Ferguson 175 that we used for everything and I swear I NEVER recall anything ever going wrong with it except it had a dead short and would run the battery down, which we just took the battery cable off when we parked it. AWESOME tractor !! LOVE YOU VIDEOS!!
"Don't know if he wants a new barn from insurance" that's priceless. My Dad got an 1130 cheap from a farmer like that who thought the engine was bad. Turns out he hadn't bothered to ever change the fuel filters and couldn't figure out why the tractor was so low on power. It amazes me the number of farmers who don't do their own simple maintenance, I sure as hell know we always did. Maybe that's why the banks like the other guys more.
Watch your channel alot yes i subscribed. You did something unheard of anymore you fixed the wiring ,which people hate and wont do. But you did it because it was the right thing to do. Happy New Year Deboss.
Love all Massey tractor from old to new, we had 2 X 274,s on the farm and they never gave any problems at all, we have only ever had to replaced oil, filters, tyres and batteries and as you mention no computer so less hassle, but will admit to never having let an an oil bath filter get that bad 😂😂 Love your video’s especially the tractors
Another good thing to have mate is a set of splitting rails is you doing tractor splits. Keeps everything safe and in alignment. I have a come along that I use to pull halves together on the rails. Simple and quick join up and can be done single manned. Great video by the way
A neighbor of mine growing up had one of these that was branded IMT which was a Yugoslavian brand. 95% of the tractor was still Massey. But some parts were specific to IMT. Always an interesting machine.
Those Perkins 4.236 engines (and their relative the 6.354) were heavy but reliable engines . I do remember a run of bad oil pump / balancer carrier assemblies that cracked on some Toro mowers though . They also marinized those and they made great sailboat auxiliary engines . They were in a lot of stuff as I found out wrenching for a Perkins dealer .
re: adding grease to bearings: It's OK, just don't overfill a bearing with grease when it is near the clutch. As the bearing heats up and grease expands, it squeezes a little bit out and it could mess up the clutch. If it's in the open, grease away! :) Love your vids, keep up the good work!
With the other masseys I'm familiar with the shifting rail has couple ball bearings like sliders and plate with an edge that breaks off which causes it to stick I've removed and repaired them in the past oh I learned to drive on our farm in the late 60s
So much woooooooork, just to change the clutch. I have to do this, but dont know if i have time to do it myself. Will cost a fortune to do at a shop though.
the good old Perkins one of the best if not the best little diesel motors ever built No doubt I have just offended all the Cummins people but these little Perkins and there bigger brothers the 6-354 are the best of the best During the 70's they were put in everything from LandCruisers, F100 style utes to interstate semi trailers to headers (combines you blokes call them) drill rigs the lot you name it it had a Perkins motor Very cheap to run and run forever I have mentioned them on here before but thought that they may have never made it to Canada but I never thought about Massey Ferguson I always roll the back away from the front as well, I find it much easier on my own even though any workshop manual I have read says to roll the front away, the bigger back wheels make it much easier to roll Rich I do wonder how many of the new electronic tractors will be around when they are 35 years old ??? As usual great video
Grew up farming 20 ish miles from where your shop is Rich. So I saw and used many.many Perkins powered MF tractors. The entire line from MF 35-65/135-180/230/299 was pretty much exclusivey Perkins 4 cyl. The 6 cyls were usually 90-140 ish HP tractors. So 3 generations spanning 40 odd years. Are you beginning to have trouble getting parts now for them? I should think so. I love these things. So simple mechanically, and poster children for reliability. Our 165,235,245 and 283 all had paper air filters. Thinking that one was optioned to oil bath filter.
Have an IHC 884 I am working on, I watch these guys trouble shooting the modern tractors with all their computers and wires and glad I don't have to deal with them. Now if I could just get through all the kludge fixes done by the Government "Mechanics"
Had the same problem on my dads old 265. It tended to get stuck when trying to shift uphill at crawl speeds. Easily pulling the tractor forward either by tow or if possible by handing the rear wheel, to release tension while easy pulling the shifter to free released it
Good day. Boy I was listening to Toronto radio station lawyer said he charges $400./hr. When you came off trailer, it was good you went slow. lol Thanks
Who'd have guessed it, all the guys with dirty hands have been saving the planet all along. No need to build new tractors, just keep the old ones going.
I have an old MF 35 that the Forward and reverse is stuck and the Slow and High Lever is also stuck. What could cause the gears to not move? How much oil needs to be in the Gearbox and what kind of oil?
Repack bearings if the grease used is compatible with the bearings original grease, incompatible greases react poorly to each other and can shorten the life of the bearing in question. 😉.
MF165 here, perkins has a slight knock (I think?). Are the perkins always have a slight tap/knock during idle. I can't remember and I've had the darn thing for 4 years!
in my part of Illinois we saw a few Massey-Harris 44 tractors but that was back in the 1950s I used to drive the 2 cylinder John Deere with a hand clutch (not the best idea)
You shouldn't open a new sealed bearing and pack it full of grease. All you are going to do is increase rolling resistance and cause more heat in the bearing.
There are so many variables that affect bearing life. Rpm, temperature, loading in various directions, preload etc. Bearings are spec'd out for the application. In general, higher operating temperatures reduce life. Adding more grease increases rolling resistance which increases operating temperatures. I have seen so many equipment failures caused by overgreasing certain bearings.
HELP!!! I inherited my dad's old Massey z134 and was able to get it started after sitting dead in the field for years. The good news is the engine sounds great & hydraulics work, but it won't engage into gear!! So there she sits. Could it be as simple as what you've just fixed in this video or do I need a new tranny?? (oh please let it be simple!!!) Thanks for any advise you (or anyone!) can lend!! 🙏
I need your help. I have a Massey 275 and the clutch linkage spring come off so the clutch pedal is limp. Can you tell me how and where it hooks up to transmission?
Where was that 274 made I'm used to different designs never seen a gear box looking like that or maybe on an old mf 25 which I learned to drive on in the late 70s
IS the same era ford tractors , same size machine give or take ,,, the same for clutch repair ? My buddy did a clutch but the peddle is too hard to push down . Great vid TY
@@gregshearer423 , Yep, Landini tractors are very good, they had a long association with MF and this, no doubt, helped them improve their own product. I work on both in the UK ( the smaller fruit tractors mostly), we always get the parts from Landini as they are usually miles cheaper and are exactly the same parts, Landini still use the MF parts numbering system today so it's dead easy to cross reference. We have lots in the south east and also the good old MF 35 and 135 tractors which are indestructable and are simply the best tractors ever made, they will still be going long after all this modern rubbish has been forgotten. Landini are no longer associated with MF and now repaint their tractors maroon and badge them as McCormicks.
Steve Fuller Landini 10000s was good or the mf 699 cabs were the week spot on ours. We had a 10000s and a 699 at the same time. Was replaced with a fiat 110-90
You saved my bacon. Hauling in some bales on my Massey 168 last night and it stuck in gear. Looked up your video, and with the light on my phone and a long bar, I got back in action. You’re a lifesaver..😄
The farm videos is why I came to the Deboss channel. Love them.

loved the check for dirt in the intake.. engine got most of it.

Great vid Rich, I love the tractor repair vids. I had the same oil-type air filter on my 1952 Willy's jeep. Worked great. Thanks Rich!

i do the same with all my bearings. best place to begin is every pre winter season i do all the wheels on my snowmobile track.
Massey 's are the best tractors. I have a massey ferguson 178 that's made in England
I don't know much about Masseys since they are super popular in my area, but that seems like a pretty simple machine.
With the other masseys I'm familiar with the shifting rail has couple ball bearings like sliders and plate with an edge that breaks off which causes it to stick I've removed and repaired them in the past oh I learned to drive on our farm in the late 60s
Reminds me of hanging out in my grandfathers shop when he would have to work on or even split his Farmall 650.
So much woooooooork, just to change the clutch. I have to do this, but dont know if i have time to do it myself. Will cost a fortune to do at a shop though.
Awesome vids man I highly doubt I’ll ever have to split a tractor but now I pretty much know how. Keep up the videos bro
Grew up with an Old 135, Grandpa still has it.

Amen to that! Perkins

NO COMPUTER?! HALLELUJAH!!!
Uh, bro..you didn't start and run it for us? That is the money shot.
Late to the party but this fella does have a point ^

We had a 1959 diesel MF and it would jam gears. Use a large screwdriver and pry back thru the inspection hold on top. Almost a daily experience.
Hey Rich, I love these tractor and equipment videos! theres not enough videos out there on old tractors and such..Keep up the great work man!
I do the same with sealed bearings, can,t believe how little grease they put in em,
I have a 57 Ferguson 35 4 cylinder gasser still runs and starts perfectly fine and made in the USA 🇺🇸
Had the same problem on my dads old 265. It tended to get stuck when trying to shift uphill at crawl speeds.
Easily pulling the tractor forward either by tow or if possible by handing the rear wheel,

Love the oil bath concept.
You make me want to move to Canada and work on old tractors.
nice vid and great work. it must be nice to be able to do all this yourself.
Superb video, great pace, lots of information, funny - its got everything.
Jobs not so easy if the Q-cab is fitted as most red Landini's have in the UK.
Lol don't loose those detent springs lol! I'm a heavy equipment johndeere Forestry Technician! Loving your channels bro. Cheers
Good wee tractor dad still has his
Man you good at what you do
Good day. Boy I was listening to Toronto radio station lawyer said he charges $400./hr. When you came off trailer, it was good you went slow. lol Thanks
Hey that clutch is completely opposite of others on masseys I've worked on the PTO clutch is usually on the inside of the assembly
great video
Water is good for it!
Who'd have guessed it, all the guys with dirty hands have been saving the planet all along.
No need to build new tractors, just keep the old ones going.
The drive disk is the one against the flywheel.
great vid
I've seen some shite in the bottom of air bath air filters in my time but this takes the title.. Neglect springs to mind very quickly..

Lovely red giant tractor, what are the front and back tyres sizes.
It's stuck in two years....a common problem with Massey transmissions....a few minutes with a tire tool a your done.....I grew up with these tractor s
good job, sam
Thanks
I'd suggest getting better shop lighting or even a light for the camera
Thanks for sharing sir
MF165 here, perkins has a slight knock (I think?). Are the perkins always have a slight tap/knock during idle. I can't remember and I've had the darn thing for 4 years!
Excess grease packing can cause over heating in heavy running bearings.
Super cool - thanks.
in my part of Illinois we saw a few Massey-Harris 44 tractors but that was back in the 1950s I used to drive the 2 cylinder John Deere with a hand clutch (not the best idea)
great video ....thank you.....
Best LANDINI ever painted red
You shouldn't open a new sealed bearing and pack it full of grease. All you are going to do is increase rolling resistance and cause more heat in the bearing.
what's the expected lifespan of a sealed bearing installed properly?
There are so many variables that affect bearing life. Rpm, temperature, loading in various directions, preload etc. Bearings are spec'd out for the application. In general, higher operating temperatures reduce life. Adding more grease increases rolling resistance which increases operating temperatures. I have seen so many equipment failures caused by overgreasing certain bearings.
I have Massey MF50H Backhoe with S series cab why I cannot fine throttle cables can you help?
Very cool man!
Here's what i want to know. Why is it so hard to find parts and info on the MF25? Just bought a 1962 MF25 and am having a hell of a time finding parts
Can you put a ROPS on this model?
here we go
What's your take on the new tier 4 Mitsubishi 1.7 three cylinder engine...like on the MF 1742?
Hey, when you had that clutch out, did you see a "WF" stamp anywhere on it? Wondering if my local foundry made it.

a landini sold with massey stickers .......landini have partnership with massey
Princess auto sells packs of dentist picks theyre all stainless and like 3 bucks a piece
They say too much grease in a bearing will make it overheat. Don’t know how true that is but I think you want about half the bearing full.
IS the same era ford tractors , same size machine give or take ,,, the same for clutch repair ? My buddy did a clutch but the peddle is too hard to push down . Great vid TY
lol, that must be high here's low.... AAAHHHH!!! sooo great!
But you can blow the paper elements out with compressed air and you don't have to mess with crappy oil.
SuperCool,Rich!!!!
'Ere We Go!
One of these days I have to split my 64 Ford 4000 backhoe and put a clutch in it. Not looking forward to that......
Nice red landini deboss 🤔
Paper filters are very wasteful too
All bearings should be greased if possible, they only put "assembly grease" in from the factory
Mf is the best
My father still has a 1996 mf 390 4x4.
That explains your bias against Deere, a Massey guy. You need to buy them down south, they bring nothing at auctions around here.
we have a MF35 that damn gear box does the same thing at least 3 times a year.
Oil in a air filter hmm
How much did you charge for the 274 4x4 clutch replacement...?
Where are you located?
Did someone say Massey?
Not good to over grease a bearing.
do u know if the tape boss is sold i n the UK?,I've been looking but havnt seen any,
You can get them online at www.tapeboss.com. Put a note with the order and I will make sure I sign it for you!
What is the excellent tune that begin at 8:50??

Red Landini tractor?
FC Koegelenberg no
FC Koegelenberg yes made in Italy by landini.

Careful you can over greasey
That filter was MESSY - how much new one I wonder
Free. You just clean out the debris and change the oil and you’re done.
I love Perkins engines,I hate this system air oil filter is shit!!
$800 an hour?
That was a joke
I'm curious what your actual standard shop rate is, as well as your service call rate is
