Many men seem to care less about their appearance. Their default outfit is usually a tee shirt, broken jeans or shorts, flip flops or dirty sneakers and a baseball cap worn backwards. There has been a steep decline from the golden age of fashion in the 1940's.

    • @pensivepenguin3000

For sure, but guys don’t need to be walking around looking like 1940s actors to look sharp. Even a more contemporary look could work if people better understood what items pair best with one another, and how important a good fit is. Before I started refining my style, I was a T-shirt and jeans guy, but I always wore well fitted, high-quality black T-shirts and slim but not skinny dark wash blue jeans, with Clean, simple shoes. Sure, it wasn’t the most sophisticated thing ever, but it never looks sloppy. For those guys wearing slouchy old T-shirts and joggers, even this would be a step in the right direction

It takes a lot of work to find YOUR style. Also, too many men try and stuff them selves in Neapolitan skinny suits. Sorry, it doesn’t work for many fellas!

I was visiting the "big city" (Toronto) last week and riding on the subway, I was struck that virtually NOBODY was dressed in anything remotely stylish. Seriously, hoodies and track pants were the norm, while jeans and a sweatshirt would be somewhat on the upper end of the scale. And women were no better dressed. Now, I know that a subway train is not where you go to observe high fashion, but Toronto subways are safe and widely used, and normally I would expect a smattering of "normal" office workers and people going shopping who would dress to some kind of standard. But no - it was an absolute fashion disaster zone. It was like everyone was a caricature of a low class fashion slob. And it wasn't much better on the streets or in the shopping malls. At no time (in 3 days) did I see anyone (male or female) who caught my attention (in a positive way).

Obviously that’s a simplistic and non-scientific definition, but you get the idea. :) These finely woven wools have a different feel than cotton, and wool is more insulative than cotton. This isn’t a placebo but rather a reality. The subjectivity comes in whether these characteristics are important or not, and that’s just down to individual preference. I have some Brooks Brothers Marino wool sweaters, and for me, not only the feel but the natural elasticity of that type of wool suits me well. I also just ordered a cotton cable knit cardigan from J.Crew because I just wanted a chunky, everyday sweater that I don’t have to be as precious about. So, yeah - there’s a place for both

    “Find a tailor.”
With respect, this is advice that I hear constantly in menswear circles and it has never been helpful.
Suppose that I know of a great tailor. What am I supposed to do exactly?
Do I walk in to the tailor’s place of business and say, “I just bought this shirt off the rack, please make it fit me.”
Is the tailor going to measure me? Do I need to bring my own measurements? Should I already know in advance precisely what changes the garment needs? Won’t the tailor want to know *how* I want the garment to fit? (Loose, tight, “regular”, etc.)

Hey, clothes are built to fit 85% of the population.. so don’t expect a perfect fit off the rack.. I take nearly everything to the tailor and it’s absolutely worth it.. he takes my measurements..we talk how I want the fit, e.g. which shoes I want to wear to a pair of trousers, so I can decide the length/break.. He‘s a experienced advisor, who adjusts the clothes as well..

      @pensivepenguin3000 День тому +1

If you aren’t sure, why not just call a nearby tailor and ask them how their services work? Critical thinking, folks. It’s actually quite simple. You bring in your items and you tell the tailor how you want them adjusted, whether that’s taking in the waste of a shirt or bringing up the hem of a pair of pants. They will have you put the clothes on, they will take the measurements and they will mark off the adjustments. You guys will agree on everything and they will tell you a time when you can come and pick them up

Actually this is someting I have been thinking about as well - I do have a tailoress around the corner who already is cleaning my dress shirts and sometimes repairing stuff, but I haven't used her tailoring skills yet (I am wrong actually, she did shorten the sleeve length of two shirts recently and it turned out perfect). So I'll be going to her and simply ask: what is possible? What is unlikely to be made possible? Tailors also make a living repairing clothes - so if you want to see whether he/she takes their craft seriously, bring something that needs to be repaired, like pockets in some pants or so. If the tailor doesn't value the little works, I wouldn't consider him or her for the important ones.

The same outfit for a summer might be a charcoal, cool-cocoa or stone suede jacket and a gray or blue polo. I'm not quite sure about the pocket flaps either with your style type, you might need a simpler front without the flaps and buttons. Compare pics of this outfit with some of your others to see if I'm right. Note that the skin on your neck and face is going a bit sallow with the warm colors. the modern fashion industry unfortunately has not educated men properly about fabrics. Synthetic fabrics have their place, but they are often overused and used in the wrong context.
There were certain things that men didn't have to worry about before the invention of synthetic fabrics. For instance suits were by definition made of wool with a viscose lining and therefore high quality and breathable. Back then men were wiling to accept the high cost of quality clothing as a higher proportion of their earnings.
While cheap clothing is not all bad, it has made people value low cost above all else, which is why one know needs discernment more than ever when buying clothes.

You omitted Sign 7: Don’t work quite so hard at being stylish. Special evening’s out aside, extreme attention to detail draws undesirable attention to oneself, and hints at vanity and self-absorption (strict grooming exempt). On a number of men, a bit of rumpledness, or a whiff of carelessness adds a certain charm. Knowing the right balance is the key. If you’re uncertain, ask a trusted woman. She will be delighted to give you a detail or two. ‘Cheers from the States.

What you are describing is trying really hard to look like you aren’t trying hard, which I would argue is its own form of vanity, and only works if you really know how to pull that off. I think putting as much effort as you reasonably can into your appearance and dress is good, but that’s not the same as overdressing. Showing up to a sports bar in a three piece suit might be excessive, but even if you are showing up in a pair of dark wash jeans and a polo shirt, you can still be thoughtful and intentional about that ensemble

My "tailor" is Goodwill and I'm not kidding. Why spend $50 on a shirt or jeans that I'm just going to destroy in a few months anyway, when I can spend $5? My job is hard on clothes, and I'm always working around the house doing maintenance on my home, yard, and vehicles. I simply can't keep clothes, they all get destroyed in a matter of a few months with grass stains, oil stains, or from my job, chemical stains.
When I'm at the house, I don't wear pants at all, because I simply hate them. I walk around in my boxers, even when I'm in the yard cutting grass. Pants suck.
My barber does a #2 clipper on the side and back, and blends the top in, going really short. The only "product" I use is called Pert. I keep my hair really short so I don't have to brush it, ever. I don't own a brush or a comb, and I haven't owned one in literally decades. I honestly can't remember the last time I brushed my hair. The mid 90's maybe?
My shoes are plain black Sketchers skater style tennis shoes, because they're cheap and comfortable. I have a pair of brown Skechers leather shoes, but the only time I wear them is with my Men's Wearhouse suit that I put on about once a year (maybe).
