Sadly, I've been to church services where people wear flip-flops, shorts and t-shirts. I sometimes feel like the dressed best man in the place simply because I'm wearing a shirt with a collar.
I wear a jacket and tie, usually a bow tie, to every Mass that I attend. When I meet someone at the parish for the first time, it is usually “I remember you. You’re the guy in …” Mission accomplished.
Randomly came across this channel but it's a gem, personally I'm a big fan of Polo-shirts, mainly Fred Perry because of the nice accent of the double stripe. Pair that with a neat pair of trousers that fit properly and it's a perfect balance of casual and class for everyday life in my opinion!
Yes, considering the abject laziness of most modern men, even dark wash jeans and a well fitted T-shirt would look elevated around some of these guys. Lol
@@pensivepenguin3000Exactly. And wearing nice dress shoes or loafers/mocs, pair of slacks, well fitting shirt and a sports jacket make you stand out as if you were wearing a morning coat ensemble 😂
Thirty years ago I read an article in GQ magazine suggesting that a black cashmere turtleneck sweater never goes out of style. I've bought several since then and find them useful by themselves for casual events in cooler weather or with a jacket when wanting to look more dressed up but not wear a tie. I appreciate your comments on color. I'm a black,, gray, navy, neutral clothing guy most of the time and can definitely do more with color.
Very true! And if dark/neutral colors work great for you (I'm the same way) don't worry too much about it. Find little ways you can incorporate color rather than going too over the top. While it's likely not the first thought when most think of color, tan boots with a matching belt can really make a darker outfit pop. If you're wearing a suit or sports coat, a pocket square is a great way to incorporate brighter colors.
Your point about right clothes, right place, right time is spot on! I respect that there's been a resurgence in classical menswear amongst youths, but sadly the world where everyone went to buy their groceries in suits and ties has long since passed. I love wearing a suit and tie or black tie, but it's reserved for special occasions. I still frequent a suit to my office as I try to set a standard, but more and more I've been moving to khakis or slacks, a button-down shirt, and a sports coat as it makes some clients quite uncomfortable if you are dressed significantly better than them. As you mentioned, there are ways to elevate a more casual or business casual look without going over the top. EDIT: Thank you for putting this content out there, James! I'm very happy that more young men are putting a high value on becoming gentlemen. I may be a bit critical at times, but know that it is from a place of genuine encouragement as I was once in your place - an outlier in a generation I felt no commonality amongst.
Great to see somebody being pragmatic about dressing well. So many times it seems like the default answer is just, throw on an OCBD, blazer and penny loafers in every situation. While I absolutely love that look, it can make you look out of place or awkward when it’s excessively overdressed for the setting. When going out to a bar and grill type place with family or friends, it’s usually a nice pair of dark wash jeans, a pair of brown leather sneakers and a polo shirt, for me
My recent experience of dressing well was quite fun attending classic car show I wore nice pink pink polo with tailored casual black pants Lady came to me saying beautiful outfit to go with my vintage car I looked over man she was with wore sweat pants and flip flops and NFL jersey white she was actually dressed in beautiful floral dress

Another excellent video James, I hope that a lot of young blokes pick up your channel. I`m here in Aust. & we are heading into our summer, & it`s mainly boartshorts & T shirts, maybe something about smart summer wear?
The channel needs more Harvey Specter. One of the minor tragedies of my lifetime,is that Gabriel Macht wasn't selected fot the MCU's Marc Spektor. Moon Knight.
I really would love for you to review some of the more masculine fragrances at Imaginary Authors! And their website is lots of fun, so well done. Love your vids!
Having lived in many other countries outside the US (Turkey, France), just wear whatever you want, outside of places with a dress code or if you're trying to assimilate yourself into a group of strangers in English-speaking countries. How the average Turk (in Istanbul) and Parisian dresses is comparatively more sophisticated and smart compared to the popular athleisure and comfort aesthetic in the US. Oddly enough, I find that Americans are often the ones that asks why one is dressed so nicely, whereas it's not something remarked upon (negatively) in these other countries. Life's too short to adhere by all these rules made up by others to follow along. Instead of being one of the many, just be your unadulterated self.
The bar of being the best dressed man in the room is set so low these days. Recently the cashier inside a gas station told me i was dressed up like I was coming from a wedding. I could only smile and tell him, "Thanks" because I was NOT dressed for a wedding or dressed up. I was wearing a casual short sleeve button down shirt untucked with gray jeans, and white leather sneakers.
I moved to Cleveland five years ago. Soon after, I realized that the notion of "the gentleman" you are putting forward is indeed dead. And it was the American Midwest that killed it. Men show contempt for fine clothing here. Bond, a fine menswear store, closed its Cleveland store in 1979 and demolished it. Four more department stores in downtown Cleveland followed suit. Now I doubt there is a place to buy a tie downtown. Clevelanders look like big babies dressed in soft pastel pajama-like clothing, even coming out of venues like banks and law firms. You are on a futile journey.
I often see men In sport coats and slacks at the theaters in playhouse square, although I'm typically the only one in a tie in the whole theater. It's a shame Nordstrom Saks and the rest are out in the suburbs. There was a Brooks Brothers in Tower City once upon a time.
Friend, please upgrade your fragrance taste because there are a lot of great fragrances which smell timeless and real gentlemanly. You'll help yourself and you'll help others!
I recently delivered a eulogy at my father’s funeral and chose my outfit carefully to be both respectful and individual….instead of the ubiquitous black suit, white shirt, black tie ensemble I wore a black suit and black polo necked fine wool sweater. One of the guests said afterwards that I looked extremely masculine and stylish. At 61, I don’t give a shit about convention, I wear what I like!
@siegfriedo not really worth it. hop on a Ryanair flight from London to Milan and you can buy something duty-free that smells better and costs along with the price of the airfare, less than the Swiss cow manure in a bottle.
Harvard U. burgundy-red is classy, or crimson for more vibrancy, but in my opinion not pink for straight men. Greens, olive or or pea or military-green are supportive and growth-oriented, and a rich deep emerald green is luxury. Shades of tan/brown/khaki/copper/gold are natural, nourishing, regenerative, common-sense/ "based", approachable. These are colours that enrich our lives, instead of just relying on good old shades of blue, which are nice too, classy & spiritual protection. Don't combine blue & brown together though. Choose either /or, and alternate for variety, but not together....
Agree with everything apart from the fragrance, excellent advice otherwise. Most fragrance's are attractively packed poisons, anything you spray on your skin get's absorbed into your body. Have you ever researched or considered the ingredients they put into "fragrances".
so you would say showing up to a casual sports bar wearing a tuxedo would be stylish? I highly disagree. This is sort of the flipside version of wearing excessively casual clothing everywhere - in either case, it shows a lack of self-awareness, a lack of judgment, and an inability to read the room and dress accordingly
