- In the late nineties, Alexis and Eric Koefoed moved onto a Northern California farm that had been abandoned for 30 years. There was no house, no running water and no electricity. They started out camping and eventually built a small home and began to cultivate the land.
Alexis and Soul Food Farm would become a pioneer in pasture-raised poultry, supplying eggs and chickens to the San Francisco Bay Area’s top restaurants.
After a couple decades on the farm, the Koefoeds still have a modest home, but Alexis began to create outbuildings for extra space. Old shipping containers that once housed their belongings became an outdoor bathroom (complete with clawfoot bathtub) and an outdoor office planted amid the lavender fields.
When Alexis’ 94-year-old father moved in with them, Koefoed simply moved her and Eric’s bedroom into the outdoor office. The container (once the information booth for Slow Food Nation in San Francisco) is a work of art.
Large cutouts on both sides of the 40 foot shelter have been filled with metal and glass crafted by Koefoed’s friend, blacksmith and welder-artist Jefferson Mack www.mackmetal.com/
The tiny home is lit (an electrical cord runs from the home to the container) with 2 antique chandeliers (one inherited from Alexis’ father’s home) and furnished with pieces from Alexis’ family (back to her great-grandmother) or found by Alexis alongside the road.
Today, Alexis has left full-time farming (she no longer has the energy for 18 hour days) and has moved into agro-tourism. She runs an antique fair on her property and has mounted an A-frame roofline tent to house guests interested in farm stays in her valley paradise.

You continue to find the most interesting people...thank you for bringing them to us.
+Tim Brown They find her.
I think the way she paid for her beautiful iron window work was fantastic. She said she traded camping there for the artist's family for a couple of summers for his artistic iron work. The artist made great memories for his family and created beautiful art work for her windows!
Kirstin,
Thank you for showing this post. I Love this place and I Love these people, and can surely appreciate the fact that they were open enough to share a part of their life with us all, and maybe just maybe inspire us all to follow our hearts. I say, " Be Inspired !!! " Thank You to those Beautiful people.
This is the one UA-cam channel I look forward to seeing new uploads. I love the sounds and commentary. Everything seems so natural and peaceful.
Really enjoyed this video. Coming across it by accident, I was so pleased that you intend to restore the barn from the 1800s. It shows such respect for those who were there before you. I would love to use shipping containers for an office. However, Ireland is rather cold and wet for that a lot of the time. Not complaining as I love the rain, also it gives such wonderful vegetation, rivers etc.
I wonder how stargazing is here, seems like the night sky could come right down to them. Loved all the happy birdsong and chickens peeping
I'm from Palestine !
lovely olive trees , well done.
Awww, this Cali climate... How few things you need to mind setting up a house.
Another nice video that keeps me motivated to live a simply life, cant wait when I get there God willing. Would have liked to seen the lady's home illuminated at night, it's so beautiful so relaxing. Good works Mrs. Kirsten
she seems like a lovely human, living the dream!
Love the farm and the house---oh and the lavender and olive trees too!
Casement Windows FTW!!
Every video on this channel is superb, but this one, hits home.
Just watching the video and hearing the birds makes me fall a sleep as if I was right there...I can feel the warmth of the sunshines, me sitting in a rocking chair with a cat on my lap and passing out....ahhhhhh
What a wonderful lady. I have run into a couple of free mobile homes recently. Old and need to be moved. Oh, please the property gods, bring some property my way. What fun it would be to create something so lovely like that. Thanks, Kirsten, for the stories that we would never hear, except for your videos.....Lynn
One of my favorite container videos. Great lifestyle and even better perspective on life. Trying to get there.....
How BEAUTIFUL, I Love it good for her !!! and of course her daddy worries about her being out there, he's just being a good loving father !! it's a Wonderful Place & MUST BE A BACK BREAKING JOB CARING FOR THE ANIMALS, THOSE OLIVE TREES AND ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING ELSE !!!! But DEFINITELY WORTH IT, SHE SEEMS VERY HAPPY WITH HER LIFE !!!👍👍👍 👌👌 Much luck to her & her Sweet Dear Father !! 🙌 God Bless 😇
Alexis Koefoed and you as well 😇
Geez, the windows in the shipping container had me fooled.I first thought there out of an old building.Talk about awesome work!
Thanx.
Incredible lady, incredible life, no talking or squawking ever needed, no stress it seems. Do you not have or want horses? That is the missing piece for me. Thanks for sharing this Life!
Lovely, charming place. Inventive, beautiful, clever use of space...so fortuitous to have decided to plant the olive trees, and now this devastating drought...the gods are on your side...or maybe it's a farm angel.. It's aways wonderful to see people who have discovered what really matters in this life, and what doesn't matter.. Thank you for sharing your story, and to Kirsten.
Thanks Kirsten. I really admire all they've done and the plans to restore barn, great.
What a nice lady, a good daughter of a very lucky father.
She made a wonderful life choice. I saw this video about a week back and have been thinking about her thoughts when she was in get thirties and what she would do with the rest if her life. I will soon be thirty so I have been thinking similarly.
+PrincessMary Gatchalian I was appreciative that she is actually whatever age she is. She said she had three small kids, so I guess they are grown now, and she's no longer in her 30s.
+PrincessMary Gatchalian I'm 49, my husband is 50 and we're still planning and dreaming about our future. I don't feel that old. My point is 30 came and went with the blink of an eye. 30 is not old, but it goes so fast, make the most of it. I say this with nothing but good intentions for you. Good luck!
That's pretty amazing. Has such a beautiful view too. She and I have the same taste and love for antiques and nature.
Love the huge windows!!
Kirsten like you said you don't see a Shipping Containers that look like this one. I love the openness of the container. The look is great.
Wow! Really nice. I love how the bedroom area is separated by the bookshelf. Great use or a container.
Thanks to this video, my heart is warmed, my soul inspired... such a ‘feel-good’ place to be. I’d love to know her. A lady after my own heart. I just simply love this. 🙏💜🤗
Perfect for Southern California where the climate is temperate and dry. Wonderful.
So glad this video was recommended. It put me in such a calm state of mind. Love everything about what they are doing 🌞
That outdoor bathroom is EVERYTHING! The best one thus far.
I love this look, wide open and lots of room to enjoy, Id move all my sewing, quilting painting into it... and a very small office....
Your Northern California features always have a different vibe to them, they are some of my favorites.
Ok, I'm jeleous. Beautiful weather, views and a farm and you get to live with dad!
What an amazing woman. Shes so intelligent.
Those windows are beautiful! I'd like to build a container house for my retirement. I'm thinking three or four containers and a lovely deck. Plenty of room for a garden and an orchard.
I am bouncing between extreme awe and extreme jealousy!!!!!
I enjoyed this video very much Thankyou.I especially like that they utilised what they had and enjoyed what they did with it...seems like a lovely simple old fashioned way of being, just really admire that
I really luv this entire set up! You definitely can see the "wisdom" in choosing this wonderful life style of authentic living! This is a dream no one can BUY? How wonderful. 🦋🐝
i love everything about your office/room and outdoor bathroom. you have such wonderful taste! inspiring!
Thanks for all you do, Kirsten Dirksen. Your finds and your filmwork are such a pleasure.
I love how she honors her father by giving him the main bedroom. a solar water heater could be run for the outdoor bathroom and solar canopies for power and shade. letting the chickens free range cuts down on feeding them manually too. great place!
another stunning video! Thank you again for what you do
what an absolute jewel ! I mean her! not the farm.. Her heart is wonderful
Kirsten, this video is by far one of my favorite that i have seen so far on your site. I find you make an excellent job on putting all your videos together but for one reason i cannot explain i LOOOOVE this one. Maybe because she talk about her lifestyle or the decoration... i don t know. Anyway, thanks for sharing i really appreciate, it helps me to see other types of construction as i want to make a project myself this is so inspiring. Cheers Julie
one of my new favorite videos of yours.
I recognize the area, and wish that I could go back home there, and have land to do that, it is so beautiful there, and being able to live on your land is so cool!... What a great find, to discover an old farm, that had been abandoned, for over 30 years!
Perfect.. Nature at its best.. I love it..
Part of me is becoming quite interested in this type of living - TFS!
I love all of it, the windows are great!!!!
steel grid windows make any building look great, inside and out.
A wonderful space! Love all the cross lighting.
What a beautiful life she's cultivated. Seems like a beautiful soul as well
Loved this video. Very glad I watched.
So beautiful ! I love your style and sense of family and preservation:)
such a beautiful story! thank you!
That's nice , your place is really quite nice and it was interesting to see and hear your view about the broken down homestead on your property It seems to me that you think deeply about people and how they once lived and do live. Peace and be good to yourself.
What a great idea! GREAT vid. Thank you.
I love it! I love simplicity, quaint! Completely peaceful. I want to do this.
that is just glorious! I so love it. you are amazing!
Kirsten I your channel is awesome!
Best video shoot in a long time! I really enjoyed this one! Good job!
Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Great Video, really enjoyed it! having a farm is such a joy to be self suffient and fresh air and all the exercise you get from working outside. Recycling those containers are so awesome. If you haven't noticed Farm people live long lives because they are so active outside and eat better. thanks again
i'm like 1,000 years old and i'm like a little kid in a candy store when it comes too shipping container homes. so much one (or more) can do when it comes to homes and what you can do to make it YOUR home!
LOL ahead on the windows....That welder got some quality time with his kids.... I think you both made good in that deal.
lot's to learn here and think about. thanks for another good video!
I have watched your video at least five times, and so wished I had the courage to do this. We live in suburbia in sydney australia with two adult children and cant see there is anyway we can do this. I so admire you and when I want to escape my life, I will switch on this video again thank you so much for showing it to us, love your taste, your way of life, your farm. can you share any more information or do any more videos, i would love to know how it all started, what you did previously, how farm from a city that you are etc.
Wow this is beautiful! The people and the place :)
very cool you could when setting up could buy another container to position underneath dig a trench and fill in cut an entry in the floor/roof for a staircase and have a temperature retreat in summer/basement bedroom
The temps in that office surely vary widely. Ive read that getting the insulated-former refrigerator trailers are the hot setup. But those surely cost more initially.
+Andrew may Andrew I like that idea very much. But fresh air would need to be circulated at all times.
***** yeh i would run off vent tubes underground at angles to reach the surface that could be shut with trapdoor venting as in AUS the underground section could be used as a safe haven in bushfire season
WOW!!!!!.......that is amazing!!! great ideas......so creative...good job!
Love this! Love Alexis! Thank you.
U did a beautiful job! how creative! from what I saw the outside look nice too
I absolutely love everything about your life style. But especially how yo did your office/bedroom shipping container. The windows, painting, and the décor is makes a beautiful home. I could see having 2-3 of these containers and having a full house. I wanted to know keeping kool and warm is that pretty sufficient without installation. Thank you so much for the inspiration. And Kirsten thank you for a fabulous video, awesome job.
Wado for sharing !
ENJOY....THE SIMPLE LIFE
Wonderful and inspirational, thank you.
That's a peaceful place. Would love an expanse like that. Lucky lady.
I love how they took their time, and built when necessity dictated it.
Wow. Just gorgeous!
Glorious and I love the bird song.😊
Well done, be blessed!
really cool, she might want to look into solar water heating with all that sunshine :)
You have a slice of heaven there. Good for you! I love all your special touches. You make it so inviting and just pleasant. Tammie Miller
I love the huge windows on the shipping container. They're so charming and useful.

I love your farm!
loved this one!
Gosh! I love this.
We love your place.
Amazing home! I can't believe what you can do with shipping containers!
I like the abundance of windows..
I like the view from the windows
They should add some solar panels around for extra energy sources
Beautiful.
Wonderful propperty!!
