"Crying" is one of Roy Orbison's best songs. I'm glad you chose a slower tempo song because it really shows off Roy's operatic voice and incredible singing range. Heartbreaking lyrics but beautiful.

This took me back. In the early 60s, I was lucky enough to see live a number of the then top US acts, here in the UK. The likes of Roy, Gene Pitney, Everley Brothers, Brenda Lee etc. And it was true - the audience sat and listened. Then the Beatles came on the scene and the girls' screaming drowned the music. Happy Days!

Roy was known as "The Voice" because he was totally unique. He had a five range octave and could slide from one to another effortlessly. His Black and White Nights concert is amazing, Elvis's TCB Band played and the lineup of stars who came out to sing with Roy goes on and on. Roy has so many great songs, it's hard to pick just one.
If you want a great one to review, check out Indian Summer with The Gatlin Brothers, Roy Orbison, and Barry Gibb. Really get a sense of Roy's range any why every artist wanted to sing with Roy.

Great song (love that Roy is singing about a subject that a man is usually at this time, not singing about, and his amazing vibrato in the high notes), you should check out KD Lang's version of this. She performed the song at the Roy Orbison tribute concert after his death, and when he was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame, on the request of his widow Barbara. She has basically inherited the song, and performs it at her concerts.

Girls, the song that you tried to play two live streams ago, "You're Only Lonely" was an ode to Roy Orbison's trademark style. The cover version you tried to play got blocked on the livestream, but the original by J D Souther (who wrote the song and knew and played for Orbison at times) is unmistakable in its reference to Roy's style! It was a number one hit for JD Souther in 1976. Perhaps at some point you guys cab try to react to his original version. It's a beautiful song! In the meantime, another Roy Orbison song I recommend is, "Only The Lonely"

A beautiful vibrato, which as you did the Seekers yesterday I'll mention that Roy and Judith are my favourite male and female vibratos. Very consistent and even from the moment the first sound comes out of their mouth.
I'd classify the song as Unrequited Love rather than Love or Breakup. It is post break up but it isn't about the break up.
Running Scared is my favourite Big O song, such a dramatic and intense song, but he has so many wonderful songs in his catalogue.
She's a Mystery to Me, Blue Bayou, Only the Lonely, I Drove All Night, In Dreams, Candy Man. Just so many but I'll try to control myself. I should be asleep now anyway. G'night.

This song was recorded very early in his career, as he looks so young. Later on his voice becomes a lot more powerful and the high notes much stronger. I always thought that he just kept getting better as time went on. So sad that he passed away from a heart problem much too soon - one of the all-time greats.

For a founding member of rock and roll royalty, Roy had a tragic life. His beloved wife was killed before his eyes when the motorcycle she was riding was hit by a car. Years later while he was on tour his house caught fire and killed a couple of his children. When he wrote sad songs, he was living them.

This is from a 1965 show, you may find that most TV performances from this era may appear a bit reserved. It's likely, because it is being filmed, that the audience have been briefed by the director to be respectful, they maybe only had one take at this and didn't want anything disrupting the recording. Mentioning that, the song begins with long extended shots of the audience and then only the backing band, even after Roy starts singing there's quite a lag before we actually see him. It looks like they were possibly having some technical issues, or it's just bad camera directing or no camera rehearsal and they were editing on the fly. Plus, for those cameras benefit, all the house lights are up, which can be very mood destroying for the audience and make them more self conscious. Having said that this is one of Roy's gentle ballads, so no one's going to be screaming to this one. One thing to note, which is not the case for most TV performances of the time, is that Roy and the band are actually performing live. The majority of TV show directors would not take the risk, they'd have the acts miming to their latest hit just to make things run smoother and quicker and not have to worry about micing everything up and attempting to replicate the record. The other option you may come across is they had a pre-prepared tape with just the backing tracks on, and just overdubbed the vocals live. All the acts of this time, of the 1960's and 70's were very capable of performing live, and as pop developed into rock, and a more rebellious era, a lot absolutely hated being made to mime for the TV cameras. Some would even goof about to make the point, barely bothering to pretend they were playing. BTW I would recommend a couple of cover versions of this song, the best I think is Don McLean's, but K D Lang also does a beautiful version too.

This being recorded live in studio, I think it likely that the audience has been asked to keep it mellow so as not to interfere with recording. I watched brief video of musicians talking about Roy Orbison, and they all marvelled at his professionalism, and at his ability to literally walk into the studio off the street, step up to the mic with no warmups, and be sharp enough to do a song in one take, if the band was up to it. He was a marvel in voice and phrasing.

This was right at the cusp of the controversy and even fear of rock and roll as "rebellious" and "dangerous." A friend's mom once told me that she want to a concert (don't remember the group) where several audience members stood in the back and swayed. They didn't yell, scream, tear off their clothes or anything like that. They just reacted to the music. Then the local sheriff and his deputies carted them away. The next day the band was supposed to play again, but they were driven out of town by that old sheriff. Different times.

As a kid I learned how to sing from this song, and my mother taught me how to harmonize etc. .As very very young teens we used to meet at the park and sing this song, and others. To demonstrate our vocal abilities, and to hear who had the best lungs/ vocal cords, and enjoy the love of music.
Heartbreak, and love, are synonymous. They cannot be separated. Yes there is unconstitutional love, parents to a child, soulmates, and the loss. Like Elton John said ," Sad Songs Say So Much".

Make yourselves a note for Christmas songs, Roy recorded a Willie Nelson penned song titled "Pretty Paper" which I have always loved. For breakup songs, go to Linda Rhonstat's " You're no Good ", and then you should dig into Patsy Cline's music!

A bunch of college students herded into the gym, told to sit there and that they'd have to listen it to it until the producer was happy. You could tell that most of them weren't interested! And I'm sure that Roy didn't look too happy either!

Love this song, he did a duet with KD Lang but please do KD Lang's solo of this song at a 1990 tribute concert for Roy Orbison
