HELL YEAH! I'm glad I found you. I just got a 2nd gen 4runner 4x4 auto with a 3vze in it the previous owner had torn down without putting it back together. No idea or info or experience with this platform. Really wanted one of these for a long time, got myself a doozie, but the price was way right, couldn't pass it by. I'll be visiting your channel frequently here in the very near future. Thank you!!!

I have a 1991 4runner 3vze automatic and it won't start. Doesn't have spark. I drove it to my cousins place and when I went to leave it started, ran for 3 seconds, died, and hasn't started since. A couple weeks before it happened I replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and air filter. After it happened I tried a new coil, new icm, new controls on relay, checked all the fuses, even bought a parts car and tried the air flow meter/potentiometer off of that one, still nothing. I even tried putting the old cap and rotor back on which I figured wouldn't do anything. I made sure there's no vacuum leaks between the engine and the afm, I confirmed the other 2 relays next to the controls on relay are working properly, I just can't figure it out. The only things left that I can think of are maybe the ignition switch or ecu, but my parts car is a manual and the one I'm trying to fix is auto so the ecu won't work in it (at least that's what I've read).
I'm a ford guy, I'm used to older American ignition systems. This toyota one is alien technology to me (or maybe I'm just overthinking it), but everything has to be working to tell everything else to work and that's crazy to me and has made diagnostics extremely difficult (hence the long list of parts I've replaced and gotten nowhere)
Idk if maybe you have an idea what's going on, but if so any help would be much appreciated, I paid way too much for this thing for it to quit working less than 3 weeks after I bought it, overall the thing is super clean, especially for 270k miles.
Oh and when I replaced the spark plugs, all of them looked good and the same except (cylinder 5 iirc, I know it was the cylinder opposite the one that normally has issues) looked to be running slightly rich, but still looked good.
Anyway, hopefully you see this comment and can help cuz idk what else to do on it, and online forums and other mechanics haven't been much help, everyone repeats the same thing "replace the crankshaft position sensor", but you already know where I'm going with that.
    Thanks!
Oh and it's 4x4 with manual transfer case and manual hubs if that makes any difference

Check the knock sensor a bad knock sensor will cause it not to start or could be capacitors in the ECU

    • @lumpyzx2645
      @lumpyzx2645 9 місяців тому

@@tonyisme4934 would the knock sensor cut spark? And would unplugging the knock sensor work to test it? I know on my Ford zx2s they're better off if you just unplug the knock sensor and leave it unplugged but some things you can't do that. Also everything I read basically said the ecu being bad wouldn't cause it to not have spark (which didn't make any sense to me), I might try my 5spd ecu in it just to see if it makes it run, if so I'll have to buy an ecu but that's 300 bucks.

It's important to put the valve buckets back in the correct order to get the valve clearances close to the factory spec. They won't all be exact after head and valve work, but they will be close. That way, when you do the final valve clearance adjustment. It's a ton easier. Saves time as well

@@StandardAmericanOutdoors Thanks for the information! I just got a 92 pickup with a 3vze in it, 6 cylinder 4x4. It's been sitting for 10 years but the engine was rebuilt during that time and its running great so far. I'm pretty excited to have this as my every day vehicle!
It's about time for me to do my first oil change on it and I've always taken my cars in to get the oil changed but I want to start doing it myself. I'm a little confused on finding the right oil though. Can you help me out?
At 18:00 you mention Rotella T4 1540. I google'd this and it looks like it's only for diesel engines or am I mistaken? You also mentioned motorcoat, what's that and how would I know how much to add?
I live in California so its pretty warm. From what I've read online the climate you live in effects what type of oil to use.
Any other general tips would be appreciated! Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

Sounds like a sweet truck man. Those pickups are so nice. I miss the one I used to have.
As far as the oil goes it does say diesel oil but it has things in it that these old toyota engines love. Like zinc. I and many other owners have used that oil for years and have seen great results. Just make sure you use a oem filter. I run 15w40 in the summer and 10w30 in the winter.
Motorkote is an oil additive that you ad in when doing an oil change. In a nutshell ot gets into the metals in the engine helping create a barrier between parts. Reducing friction. All these supplies can be bought off amazon. Let me know if I can help with anything else or with Part numbers. Good luck man. 👍
