**2 CARS PARK on HYDRANT at FIRE!** Firefighters Work to Extinguish Fire in the Rear of Brownstone
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 тра 2021
- Two cars with NYPD Placards parked on an East Harlem Fire hydrant as firefighters rushed to extinguish a brownstone fire. This caused a delay in water as the chauffeur had to maneuver the supply line under and around the cars. This is a major issue recently with cars blocking nearly every hydrant in the city, not only making them hard or impossible to use , but making them incredibly hard to locate. When seconds count, these cars could be the difference between life and death.

Those cars are lucky... I worked in MASS. as a firefighter and one fire i went to we put the hydrant line through the windows of the car in front of the hydrant and they were NOT opened. That's what you get for parking in front of a fire hydrant. Mike
My father was a retired FDNY Deputy Chief. He would say, " park in front of the hydrant, we'll just break ya fuckin' windows!"
They usually do but maybe they didn’t because one was a cop car and they didn’t want the administrative headache.
Where I live in Markham, Ontario Canada there's a fire about once every ten years.
Many years ago while serving as an engine company LT I had the joy of stretching a 5” hydrant supply line across the front seat of a police cruiser because the knuckle head cop parked in front of a hydrant at the scene of a cruise ship fire
It will always be a fond memory!!
Bet that was a lesson for the recruits of how NOT to park. FTO police officers taught rookie PO to wait for the fire companies to arrive and then close the street. Enjoy the circus while it arrived in the municipality I worked in for 20+ years.
So many times, FD would wait for police on accidents and serious med calls, yet they magically appear and beat the FD to fires.🤔
We didn't try to beat the cops to shootings and stabbings...
I love it my brother my eldest brother was in New York City fireman in the South Bronx
Bravo!
I remember 1 incident where I was at the forestry unit pushed the Parked vehicle away from the hydrant . The owner came home 5 days later with $2888 worth of parking tickets plus the vehicle pushed 20 ft past
Mid 70’s there was grease fire in an apartment near me in Vancouver. VFD had just arrived as I was walking to my car and I got to watch them smash windows and feed the hose through. Couldn’t wait around to see the cars owner return. It would have been fun! A very good lesson to be careful where you park!
Not enough appreciation goes out to our courageous fire fighters! Thank you!
That AMAZON delivery guy walking through the scene with his package @ 5:36, priceless.
Nothing is priceless on Amazon, even with free delivery.
more like a disrespectful asshole.
Yea what an idiot..
Guy simply doing his job.
When you live in NY we see fires all the time. Unless it's in our house we don't stop what we are doing. It's a shame but that's how it is here. Keep it going.
It was good to see the firefighters putting away the hoses. Usually do get to see that boring part of the job. Thank you to all firefighters out their. Especially the rural volunteers.
I'll bet these people who park in front of fire hydrants would have a fit if their house was on fire and someone was blocking access to their hydrant.
Those permits only allow cops to park their private cars in spaces marked "NYPD Only" near courts and police stations. Both cops should permanently lose their placards for that abuse but the jackass in front also removed his license plate, probably to avoid being ticketed. He should be suspended.
Dope
Apparently other people have commented that their are people using fake NYPD parking placards with misspelled words and nonexistent precinct numbers.
Edit: I meant NON-police people, in other words police impersonators are using fake unofficial documents to get police parking authority.
They should lose their jobs or be bucked down to parking duty. You wear a badge, should be held to a higher standard...
They do when the city does occasional sweeps, but pissing off the union constantly doesn’t pay off, long-term, and there is a very ingrained culture of not giving an F about anyone in the NYPD.
@@afcgeo882 I mean the city is full of communists crying ACAB and demanding huge cuts to their budget. Who can blame them?
A long time ago my father told me of being in the crash crew after the war . They had to respond to an off base fire and found the only hydrant on the block was blocked by the only car on the block . THEY NEVER SLOWED DOWN !! . Moved that sucker 60 ft !
i love the how the chief takes the time to tell thy guys " good job" thats awesome !!!
A good chief will do that - over the radio.
Damn good FC!
That chief was my coach years ago. Know him personally and is an outstanding man .True gentlemen .
That's is the difference between a boss and a leader
Some years ago in KALIFORNIA, a BMW had PARKED @ a hydrant, well they busted the 2 front windows, connected the hoses, but the short connector leaked into the car, so it was OVERFLOWING WATER ! Let me see him explain that to his INSURANCE ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Assuming a new driver engineer cause he looks young. Getting that good job buddy from the Chief definitely means a lot
Never get tired of seeing them all pitching in on the unglamorous and tedious part of being a firefighter and its especially seen in the FDNY. I can't recall a video of stowing hose where there weren't multiple members from other units helping get it done so everyone gets back in service as fast as possible. Stay safe! 🚒🇺🇸
They train hard for exactly that.
They truly are a team. Close as brothers.
FDNY, my brothers forever. Former fire captain here in CA. Plenty of memories lifting hose like that. Long days.
/月,
I miss the teamwork but I don't miss rolling hose, washing it, putting it on drying racks, or putting it back in the hose beds.
Firefighters are the true unsung heroes of society!
As a left coast fire captain, I would love to work as a firefighter for FDNY for a month to really experience the way they fight structure fires. They have a lot of nuances to the job that are different from the way we do some things. I would love to learn them all. Man, great guys and a great department.
You should have seen what they did in the 70's.
Have you ever watched the videos of FDNY running fires in New Orleans right after Katrina? The looks on their faces as they watched FDNY put out a fire was amazing.
@@johnnyangel9163My dad got on the job in 1977. ❤
Thank you for showing us the firefighters putting the hose up. Clearing the water and how they work together to restack them. A lot of time and effort put into thief work. I bet they are ready for a nap unless they get another call. God bless them.
I learned shipboard and aircraft firefighting in the Navy. However, watching these NYPD firefighters and NYPD sacrifice their lives on that tragic day of Sept 11 ushered in a whole new respect and appreciation for what they do.
AMEN BROTHER!!!!¡
Fill both vehicles with water. Let the owner/driver explain it to their insurance company.
I love it
Too bad they were not parked directly in front of it and had their windows broke and the line ran through it. Always hope for a slight leak inside the car too, perfect world the hose would bust inside the car after the fire is out. In the case of the hose busting inside the car after the fire is out, I would be in no rush to shut the hydrant off either.
@@Stick0413 I have to agree with you on that
@Aww Plausible Deniability...Paper on dash??? Whatcha talkin ‘bout???
In a different time I have seen them break both windows and run the hose through the car. I miss those days.

5:26 Amazon delivery guy didn’t have the common sense to just use the sidewalk and stay out of the way of the firemen doing hose work.
Have the Fire Department call an authorized Tow company to the scene to tow the vehicles out from the hydrant if able to. Second, allow for Fireman on the scene to issue a summons with penalties 3x the rate because the hydrant was blocked during a fire. A substantial fine will do it and if towed away, it really can be a thorn in the side of its owner.
I always said that any FDNY operation that has a blocked hydrant would mandate a court appearance ticket; and, in the event of a civilian hospitalization or worse, a death - charged with a felony!
They were cop cars, like ticketing the city, waste of time. Finding who the operator is and dock a month pay would work better.
@@seniorofficer9954 piss piss!
It takes a very long time to get a tow truck which is super inefficient when ya know shit is burning
Couple of j hooks a length of chain and a fire truck. Would make shirt work of removing the offending vehicles.
Funny it was cops parking on the hydrant this time.
It usually is. Whenever you see a car brazenly blocking a hydrant in NYC, check the dash. In 9 times out of 10, there is an NYPD placard. You'll often find every single hydrant within a 2 or 3 block radius of a precinct blocked by cops' private vehicles. They don't give a shit if your baby burns to death.
@@kendodd224 NYPD for you
@@kendodd224 But look carefully at the placard. A lot of them are forgeries or B&W photocopies or even nonexistent law enforcement agencies. A con artist tried to sell them in my friend's bar, complete with a rather obvious misspell, "PRECICNT". I've also seen them authorized by nonexistent precincts, like the 99th.
@@kendodd224 Then they surely dont give a shit too if the firemen smash the window on the drivers side to get the car away huh? At least, thats what i whould do regardless of who owns the car, and if it whould be the presidents car.
Take it cops hate firefighters. Most love firefighters and hate cops. Or rivalry between the bacon and fire department's?
Here in Florida we'll bust your windows out, throw our lines through the vehicle and you pay the $500 minimum fine on top of it. Happens now about once or twice a year.
Around here blocking a hydrant will incur you a 750 fine to start, we’ll do whatever we need to do to your car to get the line where it needs to go, tow it or surprise extrication training (haven’t done that obviously, but legally we could) and if someone died in the fire you can be charged with 3rd degree manslaughter
I live in southern California, you park your car like that, it's a automatic tow away from the police. Police is not going to sit and wait for the owner and fire department sure in hell not gonna wait either.
entitled pricks.....I love seeing BMW'S and Mercedes , Lexus, Range Rovers, anything expensive with firehose running through .....but then again, I am a Floridian....
Either car parked 2 feet difference either way, someone's losing windows. That was my firsth thought. FDNY, the bravest.
Yep, UK if it's big fire or life/death and they can't get to a hydrant, they just ram your vehicle out the way.
Due to our narrow streets and the cars often blocking them,.or badly parked, a lot now have either reinforced front fenders or bull bars and will just shunt any vehicle csusig an obstruction out the way.
And if it's your fault, they're absolved if all responsibility. Tough shit for parking like a jerk.
Thanks to all our Firefighters 🚒 and the awesome work they all do,and when will people ever learn NOT to Block fire hydrants!
When they have to pay a hefty fine. Like about $ 5000 first offense. Mandatory.
Impressive packing of the fire hoses and those cars were close to the hydrant and now see why they need space to run their hoses straight.
Work safely guys.
I loved the "good job buddy" by the chief!
Abusing the parking permit system, It should be permanently taken away from them.
Probably illegals
You'd need to take away up to 55,000 permits just for NYPD for starters then they'd park anyway. Good luck.
Total respect for these Fire Fighters
Heros run in as we run out, I could never do them justice with words, they are angels on earth, bless each and every one of them ❤

That was really interesting. Loved seeing the hoses being packed up. Here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand our fire hydrants are inset into the roadside and covered by a bright yellow plaque so, when someone parks over a fire hydrant, they literally park OVER a fire hydrant. It's not only a traffic infringement it's incredibly frustrating sadly, they never seem to get ticketed. Have yet to see what the fire service would do if they needed to access one though. Some other countries have the same style of hydrant but have them in the centre of the road so they can't be parked over which, IMO, is a much better system.
God Bless and Protect All our Firefighters, first responders, and law enforcement personnel!!
even the two cops who blocked the hydrant because they were too lazy to walk?
@@asbestosfiber Of course! I wasn't there in person to witness everything so I chose not to be judgmental. I was brought up to not believe anything I hear and only half of what I see because I don't know what went on before I got there.
@@ionecuff6323 K, try this on for size. Those are personal cars, and you're allowed to park in NYPD only spots. That's 100% not, an NYPD only spot. :)
You don't need to be in person to make an informed opinion.
As for the other a-hole, ripped license place. In Europe, we impound those cars, especially if found near a fire, blocking access. I've seen them picked up time and time again.
Again, you don't need to be there to form an opinion. Just know what the general rules are and you'll be set.
@@aserta In our country it is illegal to block any fire hydrant or park where it is posted "No Parking". But, there are always those people that think they are above the law and I think they should get the stiffest fines/penalties. Blocking fire hydrants delays the time to save lives.
That was good to look at everything in slow motion. Allows the public to understand what your work is like. Thank you.
That was regular-motion, ma'am. FDNY is notorious for moving slowly.
You take care of your equipment, your equipment takes care of you. Common sense.
I have seen fire departments break through both passenger windows and run hose through car.👍
And they'll use their leakiest hose while they do it
That would need a weird explanatin in this case. I mean: I saw those videos and they've been right. But I don't understand the drama here.
@@Nagilum3 Internet tough guys trying to act edgy.
I understand why they do it but putting the hose under the car gets the same results.
That was a staged awareness stunt.
The only way to stop people from parking in front of the hydrants is to run the water lines thru their cars. And make sure the leaky part is inside.
That has happened
The folding of the hoses, amazing! Thank u for ur service! Thank u for sharing!
Yes.....excellent folding?
That was a beautiful old red Chevy Impala parked there at the end.

You can tell how much the fire hoses mean to them the care and time they put in to the hoses is never too much.
Yeah, those hoses are pretty damn important when you're inside a house on fire. You don't want them to burst and lose your water supply.
I would be happier knowing that I can trust those outside tending to my hose.
There’s a reason why most fire fighters are guys only guys know how to take care of there hoses
Great video. Thank you. Fire hydrants must not mean anything to these people. Placard or not, there is a law. Too many people in NYC for me, but the NYFD has the most class of any fd in the country.
Thanks to all fireman, you have to have patients. Bravo, love you all.
My hats off to city fire fighters. Suburb work this happens so much less. That's gotta just be aggravating daily knowing your water sources are blocked usually.
That TEAM WORK MAKE DREAM WORK look like.
Wow, the fire fighters have a tremendous job from start to finish. I appreciate the video footage. Thanks so much!
Had always wondered about the process of stowing hoses back on board and never thought about asking some firefighters I know. Loved seeing the process and the fact firefighters from different crews helped each other so that all trucks are ready for the next call. Keep up the great work and stay safe!
I miss this so much, the brotherhood, helping the public. Good work
Me too. Former captain. You never really retire. Impossible. A year ago I was among the first on scene in my neighborhood. It all comes back to training. Gave the chief a full report on conditions and resources needed. Will never forget his reaction.
Y'all work so hard to save us. Thank you

This one's too easy so, "no comment."
Excellent. Now I know what team work it takes to get the hose back on the truck. Thanks for sharing!!
Loved your slo-mo filming. Very talented filming and worthy subjects.
I love watching them break windows and threading Lines through a car.
This is just unacceptable, I don't care who or what they are. And yes, this has become a major issue in NYC. It absolutely blows my mind. I don't know what the answer is, maybe barriers on either side with bright yellow stripes painted on the road? The outdoor dining on the road isn't helping taking up much needed parking spaces, but that's not an excuse to park in front of a fire hydrant.
It´s a matter of fines and immedialty been towed away, no matter who´s car it is....
I hope the cars got damaged and/or towed
@@RobertKorte1 Great idea. many people who park in Manhattan are coming in from out of state. Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Jersey & Delaware mostly. Ticket them if you want but there's little chance the City will get paid. A study this spring reported NYC has over $1B in unpaid traffic tickets.
@@arribaficationwineho32 Some folks would be thankful for some damage. Collect insurance & a check from NYC.
@@arribaficationwineho32why damage the cars on purpose? Yes they should be heavily fined and possible towed.
But if they were able to use the hydrant there is no justification to just damage the cars for fun. Then you are no better then the owners of the cars.
In my perfect "dream world" fire trucks would come equipped with arms like commercial dump trucks. They pull up to a blocked hydrant and put the arms out... lift the car up and over and dump it (preferably upside down) on the other side. Just drop it from like ten feet in the air on its roof.
Thanks for the memories! USAF Firefighter 1975-1982.

Do Fire trucks inthe USA not have an onboard tank of water to allow them to start trying to knock down the fire while they gt connected to the hydrants ? Fire trucks in the UK and Norway at least have onboard water tanks, and drums with hose that can be run out very quickly to allow initial fire suppresion, while the crew run out the larger bore hoses and connect to a water source to complete the job.
Wow was shocked to see that it was an NYPD member
I won’t say it’s not an official member, but If you know the right people, anyone can get those department parking permits.
I have a few friends of mine from other states that have the same thing in the FDNY version.
Non members/buffs/photographers go into the city and park where they want, with the assumption that it will keep them from getting parking fines.
Some times it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
I have a question...What size and how much hose is carried in each of the hosebeds on an FDNY engine?

You can always bust the windows out. I’ve seen it happen. And no the department didn’t have to pay for replacing the windows. Hazard of breaking the parking laws.

I think a TV crew and the city need to have a new season of Parking Wars and call it Hydrant Wars. Start towing them and film the interactions at both the cars, and the impound lot. The city would make money twice over AND the city would be safer.

As always, great job..... .
In the town I live in, they put a blue road reflector in the center of the car lane to let the FD know where a hydrant's is located at.
I once witnessed fireman move several cars on Wall Street that were preventing their trucks from passing. Several firemen went to one side of the cars and rocked them up and down until they were able to walk the cars over the curb and up to the sidewalk.
Less lawsuits than using a cowcatcher.
Are there bays marked in front of the hydrants, like lines on the road where you know not to park? Or is it a judgement thing trying to guess how far away from the hydrant you should be?
Rule is 15 feet. There is some leeway but it’s very obvious when it’s less than 15.

4:30 an easier way to drain the water from hoses, during male-up. Get a breaker bar (steel bar, like a Halligan but without the pointy bits, you'll have something in your truck that will do this) and hold it at shoulder level, horizontal, under the hose. With one end anchored (held, or just the weight of the hose) walk away from the anchored end, with the hose going up over the bar. A LOT easier than doing it hand-over-hand, faster, less work. Great video l0oves the mop-up work at the end. One question, way back when I was a kid they use to have towers at the firehouse to hang wet hose and dry them. You never see this on new stations, do they not dry the hoses anymore?
Hose towers! A blast from the past. Some stations have a hose rack to empty the lines.
Hose must be emptied. Rubber lined hose is vulcanized. This means sulfur. Water in the hose can lead to future pinholes.
@@robertborchert932 Thanks for replying I was curious ;)
to give you a clearer answer, older hoses would mildew if they were put away wet. new hoses have mildew resistant jackets, so while it is best to dry them after cleaning, it's not as critical. many stations also have hose drying boxes that use a fan to circulate air around the hose, so it doesn't have to be hung up in a tower to dry.

I like the filming. Like watching C span, just set up camera and just watch and listen.
I agree. C Span figure it out years ago. You don’t need a voice.
Nice they roll up the hoses just like they did, over a hundred years ago. So much for innovation, in their defense fire probably burns the same.
Some things just work. Did you know that a coal fired engine pump could flow over 1000GPM? Good stuff. Love the tradition, it's in my blood.
If I had a penny for every stick I've thrown on my shoulder....hehe.
At 7.10....How many firefighters does it take to roll a hose? ...All of them .. only kidding...you guys are amazing 👍👍👍
I always think of that scene in Backdraft when they run the high vol right through the car.
The funny thing is that they can easily roll the hose under the car and get the same result.
Why am I not surprised that a cop would park in front of a fire hydrant? I saw a cop car parked in a handicap spot in an almost empty parking lot. (The spot right next to where he parked was empty) There was no emergency other than the cop was sucking up to an attractive clerk. It's also not a surprise that cops and firefighters don't get along well. (Do cops get along well with anybody?)
Seems like something that could be solved technically...
If the fire hydrant connections are made upward and a U-shaped hose is connected between them, it can be used from any direction.
Or, there could be a law that you cannot park a vehicle within 15' of a hydrant.
I have a question. Do the hoses need to be dried immediately? Is it something that gets done on a rotating basis?.
They will more than likely get changed out ,but they do get repacked on scene to get the truck back in service
Teamwork makes the job so much easier!
I watched the shot of the hose wrapping under that second car and thought, "ooh you got away with that, you're a lucky boy whoever are!"
