During lock down (spring 2020 for all you posers posting later about still watching) I discovered a funny set of exchanges in the comments of Reel Big Fish videos that sometimes mentioned No Doubt and Gwen.
I tracked down the short comedic video and I hope you enjoy it - I was on the fringes of Ska Punk scene but found it all funny and most people who follow music generally will as well, bonus for the Ska Punk fans. It did so well they made a second video! No I'm singing- Please don't hate me because I'm trendy...

Do people understand how amazing and progressive this band was? This was a band with a girl front man who wrote awesome songs about feminist issues that were good enough to make anyone listen. The music by itself is amazing, Gwen's lyrics are a perfect compliment and the videos explain the lyrics perfectly. She's a woman at the forefront of the woman's lib movement who calls attention to the fact that she's treated better then her band mates. This is the example you give your daughter. Be Gwen. Be an absolute bad ass who rocks but don't for a moment think that being a woman in a man's game is nothing. Realize who you are and the world around you. Realize you're being promoted because your sexy and don't hit people over the head with it. You're sexy and exploited because you are but that doesn't make you scared of being sexy. No Doubt paved the way for so much music. It's just not fair that they understood who they where while they changed everything

Drunk Not wearing any pants u do kno the songs were written by Eric her brother the founder of the band and there were 2 singers the first singer blew his head off right b4 they recorded tragic kingdom. He was Eric's best friend and thus Eric lost love for this so he gave the band to his lil sister and agreed to compose this record. The bs feminist thing was more Eric motivating gwen as a child cause she would say stuff like i cant I'm just a girl so he picked on her about it and forced her to sing w him when she wanted to do other things. Just a girl isnt what dumbasses think its about its a joke or whatever u wanna call it between an older brother his very close lil sister. Eric went on to b an animater. This is also y the sound changed sooooo much after her brother who was more of the ska punk guy left.

Another song about narcissistic abuse…. Been noticing them so much lately, especially from this era. When it didn’t have a name in the collective consciousness yet but the artists felt it and made some incredible music about their experience. I love finding this in art because it’s just as covert as the abuse but instead of choosing to hurt people, artists chose to share the pain and heal others…literally across time and space. Such a true and genuine human connection.
Decode by paramore comes to mind and cosmic love by Florence and the machine. Go listen through the perspective of being victimized by a narcissist. Life changing.

She wrote some great songs for this album. Really crazy. Back in the day all the chicks I knew idolized her
I was fortunate enough to see No Doubt in 2009 when they reunited even after she went pop. We drove in front out of town even though we knew the concert was sold out. A scalper told us to ask the ticket booth if they had tickets anyway since he didn’t have anything to sell. The venue did have tickets and they kept telling us the view would be blocked. There was one column in the distance closer to the stage but we could see No Doubt just fine. It was an amazing experience!

Hearing No Doubt as a kid redirected my tastes. Bought Tragic Kingdom ASAP and considered this song a gem for fans alone to enjoy, since I never saw it on MTV or the radio. Loved the whole album.
