Poor Man, it wasn’t said, but he must have been an elderly gentleman, unable to help himself. Plumbing issues, that weren’t addressed. Died at home. Yes, decomposition smells terrible, worst yet, brings out a lot of flies, maggots, etc. May his Soul Rest In Peace. We should always check in on our elderly neighbors, I do.
It's easy to assume, but no one said he was elderly and no one said there were plumbing issues in the house. Despite it being determined that he died a few days ago, I was wondering when was the last time the neighbors actually saw him? Grass appears to be maintained with flowers in the yard.
Poor man, He was clearly struggling with his mental health. Hoarding isn't normal, it's rooted in undelt trauma..if only he could've gotten the help he needed. What a terrible way to go, RIP♡
My grandpa is a materialistic hoarder, not because of trauma or mental health. You people label anything you don't see as normal as mental health issues and it all trickled down from quack doctors.
That's an assumption on your part. I think poverty is the problem. If he had money he would have paid people to clean up his house and make sure his toilet worked. If family values weren't so screwed up, someone might have cared. All our taxpayer money is going to the international conflict, thanks to biden. Why do you think he was broke and sad? RIP to the old man I feel bad for the family next door but I’m grateful that they were nice enough to do a welfare check Edit: nvm, lookin at the comments and rewatching the video they kind of did pay more attention on who was going to clean it up than they did about the man’s health
The ONLY reason they called to have a welfare check done was because the smell and flies were bothering THEM . It certainly wasnt out of care or concern for their neighbor , they didnt even mention him once , not that they were concerned they hadnt seen him in a few days , not that it was sad that he died alone , not that they hoped he didnt suffer while he was dying alone etc Every word they said was all about THEM .
I feel so bad for the old man who died alone with no one but the neighbors to check on him. I also feel for the neighbors who want to protect their kids and have a decent quality of life. This really makes you think about the importance of family and having a spouse and a legacy. Having people who you talk to regularly who will notice when you’re missing in action.
Sorry, you are making it sound like neighbors cared. They were just being selfish looking out for their "inconvenience " and nosesore. This is exactly the problem with American culture, being selfish and egoistic without caring to others. Hence, this country is descending into mental issues and ever increasing chaos and violence
The saddest thing about this story is that after the man died, the only thing anyone cared about or had to say at all was just angry bickering over who's going to clean up after him.
That's a lot of work. And it's super nasty I don't blame them. Would you clean up a house with dead guy stink and his crap every where because he's crazy
@@crazychase98 You have missed the point entirely. It's not the fact that they talked about who would clean up the mess, that's natural. It's the fact that that's the only thing any cared about, and not the person who died or the fact he'd been dead for days and no one even knew until his rotting corpse began to stink up the neighborhood.
I hope he passed on, as peacefully as possible, and even more than these words can describe. We always treat people as we'd like to be treated, and the people in all of our world matter. (Even those that are unhealthy, and toxic, to be near, we can send them our best, anonymously.)
Hecant be at but so much peace the news station deemed it acceptable to blast this poor man and his family's personal health issues out there for everybody's business...thats shameful, neighbors reported it called police contacted his family to help sort out the mess and clean it...why broadcast it to everybody else? Biohazard hoard. That is awful. Hoarding is a horrible mental health issue and difficult to manage. The home would need to be addressed by the family. Nothing the city can do at the moment.
Yes the city can get it cleaned and put the bill on the family they found or sell the house to recoup their money. No one who pays their mortgage should have to live in bio hazard waste because of city waiting on family?? What if it was a fire hazard to their home?
@@eileeneclark9011 M Palmer is talking about the neighbors (who pay a mortgage) shouldnt have to live with it while the city waits on family in other states to deal with it . Who knows how long that will take .
Not sure what they do in Michigan but Tennessee they just bulldoze the home and resell the land if its bad enough to smell down the street ..condolences to the homeowner family
I get their frustration. It’s a stressful scenario. They didn’t know this neighbor and they were concerned once the smell was overwhelming. Now they have to deal with the smell and aftermath. The family, probably distant are dealing with the affairs of the man and this is PROBABLY, the last thing they want to deal with. Id personally condemn the house itself. Not worth saving. The stench is in the walls and foundation by now.
Who pays for the demo and more importantly, restitution of the next of kin or estate trustees? It’s a house still and someone owns it, Whether it’s the family or thr bank I’d there’s still a mortgage.
Instead of condemning it the living family members might be able to make some money selling the house to a house flipper to deal with the mess Housing prices are so high shit holes like this can still make a lot of money

If he was an elderly gentleman, living by himself, without additional help, you can only Understand if you are elderly and not as mobile as you wish to be and not dependent upon Others. The real shame is the lack of neighborly Support to the elder person with helping instead of judging both by oneself and other resources.
Just sad..this man didn't have family or friends close by to help take care of the house. Now the neighbors have to live with the stench, my heart goes out to them.
@Its me or whatever One of my brothers died as a recluse hoarder. Family members visited, but he ALWAYS insisted on meeting at a restaurant. None of us knew he was a hoarder until after he died. Coroner told us he had been dead for about 6 weeks before anyone found him. Neighbors called for a welfare check but were told that he had a right to live a secluded life. It was the decaying smell that finally brought the police into the house. His hoard was as bad as we've all seen on TV...couldn't even get into a couple rooms. Reaching out isn't as easy as it sounds.
As a Cna working at a nursing home you got to treat the elderly individuals with dignity & respect, no matter who it is, when they're living & when they pass away. How would you feel if it was someone you loved a family member or a friend? Most likely he could've had Alzheimer's & he died from it, the man probably couldn't walk very far so the buckets were used for something & the only things he had that were reachable for him. Noone probably ever tried to stay in touch or help care for the elderly man so he gave up & died alone. I see the just, & both sides of the situations, however this could have been prevented if someone actually took the time to call. the neighbors actually are just thinking about their own selves. love your neighbor as yourself." It is really sad nowadays we live in a much different world now where everyone wants to think, be negative, & are lost in their own selfish worlds. people have no consideration or respect for anyone anymore & it's a sad fact. May this person rest in peace with dignity. Thank you all who took the time to comment & to add their positivity also to say thank you to me I appreciate it. God bless you all!
We don’t know if he had Alzheimer’s, we don’t know if his family has tried to help in the past on multiple occasions and got fed up. You can only fight for a person for so long when they won’t even fight for themselves.
I hear what you're saying but some people esp the elderly prefer to be on their own and be independent - you cannot force yourself on them because they will not allow it. I'm sure as someone working in the field know and realise that. You cannot make sweeping statements without proof or knowing the background. Also people, old and young have been neglected for decades so stop blaming the youngsters.
If the neighbors knew this gentleman was elderly and lived alone, why didn't they check on him to see if he needed help? My heart goes out to him. RIP dear soul!
When I was a kid my mom made us go check on our elderly neighbor once every few days and check if she needed anything. All we had to do was knock on the door and say hi and ask if she wanted or needed anything and she almost always said no but I understand now why we had to go ask. She was a sweet old lady and usually offered us something like a snack or lemonade. Please check on your elderly neighbors yall it's a little thing you can do that will greatly improve the quality of their life near the end of their time here on earth. I know there's people who won't appreciate it but they are in the minority and cases like this are extremely rare. It's important to communicate and be involved even the smallest gestures help.
My heart goes out to this poor man. Died alone and unwanted. Maybe the neighbors could have reached out to him at some point. This is a horrible story. There’s no compassion anymore.
Hoarding generally comes from trauma, and trauma requires professional intervention. Sadly, when it comes to therapy / counciling, it's always up to the person suffering to allow others to help them help themselves. It's an arduous process that's statistically prone to failure. That all being said, my heart goes out to him as well, and his neighbors. In the spirit of your comment, I wonder how many folks are truly that actively involved in their immediate communities...
Thank you. All of a sudden they 'care' If I would've known. I'll gladly pay him a visit. I absolutely love listening to words of wisdom and stories from the past. Only if he can speak to tell society about his legacy.
Just because they're elders doesn't mean they're good people... they've simply aged. Burning bridges or just being a bitter person can cause family to not want to be bothered.
I know and now even after he's dead they're still trying to get there 10 minutes of fame crying and complaining oh his house had bugs on the outside that all houses get at the certain time of year oh the yard the yard looks fine you didn't have anything Hoarding in the yard. Those people were complete idiots
Maybe it's me but I just don't like how this story was reported. It lacks empathy. We don't know if this older gentlemen suffered from alzheimer's, dementia or some other mental and/or physical disease. The neighbors seemed to make it more about them. While I understand their concern, little Timmy/Tina not being able to play in the backyard should have been edited out of this segment. They could have addressed the sanitation issue and how the city manager plans to address it in another way. The story lacked compassion from everyone in the segment. We know that the city has a handle on the situation so it was almost pointless to report it other than it being salacious story

We had a neighbor like this, no gas,no running water, no heat, just electricity. He would also put his waste in a bucket, and throw it out back. We called the police who couldn't do any thing, who told us to call the health department who couldn't do anything who referred us to adult services who couldn't do nothing... the fello finally left one day and his house still sits there looking a mess, milk still sitting on top of the fridge I can only imagine what it smells like it the house. He was an older but not to old fello who was still able to do for himself just preferred living that way I guess.
The man died. Apparently his family was unaware. The family resides out of state so they are going to need a little time to coordinate the clean up. There may also be a financial burden as well. What irritates me is that the female neighbor stated on camera that she will call and annoy the City daily rather than allow the family to adequately grieve and get this taken care of. It seems like the neighbor wants to be a nuisance without having full knowledge of the next of kins situation. Maybe you can offer to assist the family since their neighbor is deceased.
His family evidently didn't care about him. I would call the city everyday, too. And if they didn't handle it..that house would go up in flames in the middle of the night. The neighbors shouldn't have to suffer from smelling human waste 24/7. You are nuts!

We really need to provide a deeper level of care for elderly. We need to be able to provide them a range of services. I work with people w rare diseases and so many of them desperately need help w housekeeping and that's one thing noone helps with providing to chronically ill and elderly people. Had he had a Weekly housekeeper to help him keep up the house then he'd probably accept a home health aide to assist him w showers, shaving, dressing because he wouldn't be mortified his home was a wreck etc
Where I live, caregivers are paid between $9.50 and $11.00/hr., depending on the service. At these wages, there simply aren’t any caregivers. I receive one hour weekly for ADLs and two hours for IADLs; my caregiver lives seven miles away, so we try to get everything done on Saturday mornings. She is kind, fast and efficient

What a bunch of selfish, unkind people. No thought to being a community for an elderly man with no one to help him. How helpless and lonely he must have felt! The neighbors are all concerned about material things and the clean up (not to say it's not important), but what about caring about a human being who just passed away? Maybe even more than material objects? They think we'll watch this and judge that poor man - they should be ashamed to have made no effort to get to know him and understand his situation. Who knows what he might have had to offer in return. For one thing, teaching your children to value the elderly - which is what you will be one day, if your lucky.

This was the most insensitive report on a loss of human life. To the family of the deceased man, someone should've been checking on him. To the neighbors who knew he was elderly and alone, you should have been checking on him. Out of decency. What is wrong with people today? Such a lack of humanity.
It is not their responsibility to check on their neighbor. Just because my house is next to yours, doesn't mean I owe you ANYTHING. He should have taken better care of himself. If we are shaming people, let's shame him since he clearly didn't take care of himself very well. He should have done better. He should have cleaned up. He should have kept in contact with his family. Seriously, blaming everyone. Get out of here. This man was not their responsibility just because they live next to him.

It is a act of compassion and kindness. We all get old and you never know what situation or health problem you would have at any age. Who knows , your family and kids could move away, not check on you either because this is the mentality alot of folks have and are teaching their children. Out of sight, out of mind.

Hoarding generally comes from trauma, and trauma requires professional intervention.
