Hi Dr. Dray! I'm a Chemistry major college student starting med school in 2022. I need to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and how much I appreciate your commitment to "good science". You always let us know when studies are limited, you search for contradictory research papers to eliminate confirmation bias, and you cite your sources in every description box. These are fundamentals of basic science that you have always been such a good example of. The videos are so entertaining and fun, but I really wanted to tell you that I recognize how committed you are to making the education pieces as unbiased, truthful, and research supported as possible! I love derm and that's because of you!
Beautifully said!
Exactly!!! Best comment! Exactly why I always trust her videos so much!
Do you guys know if spray tans are toxic?
Covering varicose veins..such a good point! Side note-I had the surgery for varicose veins and it was torture. Imagine a madman digging around your leg muscles with a toothpick in each hand, because that’s what it felt like. Ugh, just thinking about it 😖 AND they came BACK a year or two later! 😢
I use self tanner to cover veins. To say I'm white is an understatement.. I've been teased my entire life about my translucent skin - the tanner has pretty much stopped all the BS. Glad to know I'm not killing myself with the self tanner.
Me also! People often ask me why I bother wearing tan but make fun of my pasty white skin. Hmmmm why do you think? Lol
I live in the south, where being tan is considered the "norm" and pale as "sickly"... I've been picked on my whole life, because over my skin. I've been called Casper, Powder, I look sickly, "You need some sun!", disgusting, unattractive, ugly, gross, etc... I'm finally looking into self-tanner, because I'm tired of it.
@Free2016 the comments you've received are utterly disgusting, and those people would realise that if they were asked if they would say the opposite to people with naturally black skin.
@@shae9364 do you really want to be esteemed by people who would say such things to you?? They don't deserve the time of day
Does anyone have a DHA that they recommend? I also suffer with extreme insacuraty do to my light skin. Growing up in new mexico being mixed race I was always made fun of for being the "white girl". I do have the ability to tan but I want to take better care of my skin. I also like the fact that I don have to wear as much makeup when I have a good face tan
You've enlightened me on many levels Dr Dray. Thank you. I watch a few other derm channels but hands down, you are my #1. You've instilled trust and confidence at a time when we are bombarded with misleading and outright false information. My late husband was a scientist/patent attorney who used to say "the devils is in the details". When I hear you say this, it puts a smile on my face. He'd wholeheartedly agree! xo
Just love all the studies you cite in your videos. There is so much misinformation that gets voiced and nothing to back up the claims
Bravo for “not imposing your belief” when treating a patient. We need more like you in the medical field:)
I agree
Thank you for this - I saw a different video recently that left me a bit confused, but as someone who is not a dermatologist, I didn’t quite feel in a place to question some elements of it. So, thank you for giving us your professional opinion. I’m not an avid self-tanner - just a bit of gradual tan every so often for some added glow (not anything dramatic) - but I know so many people who used to use sun beds who now use these products instead. I’m glad they seem to be safe to all intents and purposes!
The way Dr.Drey tells us where DHA originated from is just legendary Dr Drey style& why we are here. These videos are more like classes by experts better than most classes in unis. Thanks Dr Drey
Using self tanners helped me break my decade long tanning bed addiction. Then eventually I stopped using the self tanners as well. Now I'm just fine with my natural skin tone. I purchased some self tanner last March just to get "a little color", applied it once then realized it waskt with the effort 😆
Me too, I used tanning beds for 15 years, self tanners definitely helped but you’re right , it’s not worth the effort
@Jixou because just being happy with my own natural skin color is free and takes no time or effort. Vs. Self tan being expensive and time consuming to do correctly
It doesn’t work with tretioin 😂😳
Fascinating! Just discovered your videos…love the background/history of DHA, LOVED how you explain the mechanism in which it works on the skin! So interesting
All I can say is "Phew" glad to hear this. Thanks, Love
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, doctor. Your commitment and passion for what you do is amazing.
Great information. I always appreciate your down-to-earth scientific explanations and keeping an informed and objective view.
I used to go to tanning beds all the time. You are the reason I wear sunscreen daily and have switched entirely to self-tanner. The Public Health service you do with this channel has to be huge. Thanks for helping me understand how to care for my self better Dr Dray 😊
Same girl! I am a sunscreen for face advocate now, I swear!
I’m getting ready for my self tanning session tonight. 😅
as a naturally pale person who always wanted a nice tan and has spent their entire teenage years and early 20's frying in the sun to no avail except insane suburns and mole removals, thank you!! I have been sunless-tanning for a couple years now and finally achieved the tan of my dreams and after watching this video can rest easy.
What a great professional is Dr Day!
I absolutely love her videos and I surely learn alot from her 💝
Very intelligent. Genuinely impressed with how you delivered this succinct, comprehensive and logical position.
As a suggestion, your skillset would be valuable as a material witness in relevant cases.
Well this is GREAT news! Thanks so much Dr. Dray! ♡
I'm a fitness competitor and sunless tanners ARE a requirement - this is definitely correct. 🙂 They were also one of the few things that helped me feel confident when I had cystic acne (pre-Spironolactone) and a very tight budget. Thank you for making this, Dr. Dray!!!
Omg! I literally DMd Dr dray YESTERDAY about this and she has a video up already!
You're a godsend Dr.! Thank you for yet another great video!! 💐
I've never used a self tanner but this is great information to have. Thank you, Dr Dray. Happy Wednesday! I hope you have a fabulous evening. 💟
Great explanation and info. Thank you for always being clear so that nonscience people can understand.
I searched this topic the other day and today you make a video. Do you see what people search for and then make a video? I have no idea how but I love you for it❤️
We would love your new winter skin care/body care fav products, please!!!!
I love this video! When I started learning more about skincare, I started wearing SPF in everyday life (as opposed to just when I'm at the beach or pool). But I really missed having the look of slightly bronzed up skin. My skin can get really pale to the point of veins being clearly visible, so I feel like I just look healthier when I have a tan of some kind. When you said that DHA in combination with sunscreen could benefit the skin, I was like "Say no more!!" 😎
This is a great lecture, fantastic Dr. Dray! Thank you!!
Yes the shopping videos are fun. But this is why i subscribed. Well done!
This was a great video! I do use sunless tanner in the summer because I don’t get a tan from the sun and I like the look of tan skin in the summer. Even though I use the tanning products my sunscreen is the last product that I use. I have had 2 spots that were pre cancer and one was on my face so I apply sunscreen everyday even if I have no plans to go outside. Thanks 😊 I love the nail polish.
As a bodybuilder who competes, the purpose of the tan is show showcase muscles under the bright stage lights.😎 I always enjoy your videos and knowledge. Thank you.
In like, all of the pics of body builders that I see, y'all are also SUPER FRIGGIN SHINY. Does the oil (at least that's what I'm guessing it is) serve the same purpose?
@@werm3169 the "shine" you see is called glaze which surprisingly is Pam (cooking spray ...which has been the case at most of the competitions I've competed in)! 🤭🤣 Also to enhance the look of the muscle under the bright stage lights.
I bet, there's nothing like the feeling of showering afterwards and scrubbing off all that stuff and stage make up. And having a nice meal. Like seriously, competition prep for body building looks so hard. I could never put myself through even half that. You guys/gals have insane self discipline.
The UVA protection possibility is very interesting, thanks for this video!
I have been wondering this forever. Thanks for answering it!
Dr Dray you the GOAT!
The information you share and the way you speak is just…..wow. You are so smart and I love that you distill the impressive amount of information you have for us in a usable way. Thank you!
Thanks for the great explanation Dr Dray 💜 I do still find that self tanner is drying so I try to avoid except for special occasions!
I just counted my self-tanners from past year: 21 different products. And why?! Because it is supposedly undesirable to be pale. WTF? So is there any skin colour in the world that is desirable? Everyone wants to change. Me - no more! I was shamed for my colour for years and I never personally disliked it. Now, at age 27 it's finally time to accept myself. Edit: I will say, that I appreciate that fake tan covers stretch marks and scars very well, but it is sad that these are not normalised. Most of people have imperfect skin.
That's just not true. Very pale skin and very dark skin are not found as attractive as the entire range of skin colours in the middle. That's just fact from every single preference study that has been done in the last century. There will always be people who find these tones attractive, but not the majority right now.
True
@@cabaelz not in Asian countries.
@@BuffyunaTV even that's not true. Pale skin is the preference, but not *the palest* skin. I have the palest skin in the world. Like it's not possible to have lighter skin than me. When you have an extreme skin colour, it gets remarked on ALL the time. Strangers have no problem commenting on my skin at all or wouldn't be unusual for multiple people to remark on it in a single shop! And it's never, ever a good thing. I can't imagine having to deal with both beauty ideals and racism as those with the darkest skin do in so much of the world.
I feel the same way, it is so much work as well! but i feel so much more confident when i am tanned
Thank you so much for this, been waiting on an educational video from you about self tanners for a while!
Thanks for watching
You are effing amazing what you have taught me ..omg my skin looks like a 30 yearl old
..at 30 my acne was so bad...I followed you and used differin ...
Omg I look better at 59 than I did at 30 and your drug store /Walmart shopping just reaches real people ...you are a beautiful star in the night sky..u are so real and beautiful..don't sell your soul caus you made a 59 year old have gorgeous skin ..I love you ❤️ 😍
I said this on another channel that talked about self tanning, and I’ll say it again here.. I had an epiphany a couple weeks ago. I’ve been using self tanners off and on, and realized that I was spending money on something to change the colour of my skin tone, but really for what reason? I’ve never had an insecurity of my skin tone when I was born, but it’s what society has painted certain parts of the world to overtime. “You’re so pale, or you’re so white!” As if that was a bad thing lol.
No matter where we are in the world or whatever your skin tone is, there is always a beauty standard we’re not following. Using self tanners is better than baking in the sun or worse going to a tanning bed, but we only get our skin this one time. Maybe we should just start respecting it more by protecting and refining it rather than changing it :)
Have a great day whoever is reading❤️
I've always found self-tanner odd as a dark skinned person myself. I understand that being "tan" is seen as healthy but as a POC I've just always found it bizarre that a natural skin color I was born with and others, has been the source of derision and bigotry but here you have folks who don't necessarily have to experience that willingly making themselves darker because of some arbitrary beauty standard. Humans are weird.
I like to use self tanner because it helps hide any marks or scars on my face. I don’t go super dark just a subtle hint of color and I find it really evens out my skin tone. My favorite is the Jergens face lotion with spf in light\medium. Game changer!
SAME.
Looking tan makes the body, or at least mine, look skinnier.
@@BLiNGyourALARMclock that's the only one I use, love it :)
i am relieved 😌! thank you dr dray 🙏🏽
Love your earrings and the info. on sunless tanners. I have been using them for years
What a relief! And thank u so much for doing this video! I’d been recently led astray by some incorrect info on a different Dermatologist’s channel.
Thank you Doctor for this video. Your knowledge and professionalism is very appreciated. It's a pleasure to watch and listen to a professionalist who is sharing own knowledge with the rest of the people.
Hey Dr. Dray! Love your videos. Would you be able to speak on scalp micro-pigmentation? There isn’t a lot of information about it online. Would appreciate it!
Great informative video!!! I had this question for so long. I stopped using self-tanner on my face since I felt might age my face. But that most importantly had been afraid that my serums (vitamin C, etc)or devices might not have the same effect. Wish I could find that answer. I just started using the Droplette, this would be a good question to ask, if self-tannner would prevent the mist of tis device to penetrate the skin.
Thank you Dr. Dray. Your such a gem💎
Happy Wednesday! The sweater colour and earring combo is beautiful on you! 💕💕💕
Thank you! You too!
Love your earrings Dr. Gray! They remind me of glistening snow and liquid droplets of gold 😄 and thank you so much for your amazing skin advice as usual that helps bust all these skincare myths! I know I can always rely on your channel for solid, science backed advice on skin 😊🥰
Very good video, great source of information. I love that we get the references with it. 👍🏻
Thank you! 👍
Another interesting pos-thanks! I live in the northeast- would you comment in an upcoming post about UVA skin penetration in the winter v. summer months? I am often outdoors, always use sunscreen but not a sun hat except in the summer months.
Literally the best channel on youtube
thanks for watching
I have used St Tropez sunless tanner. Worked wonderful, no orange tone. I haven't been in the sun at all in over 30 years. Also a 13-yr melanoma survivor. I totally embrace my lilly-white wrinkle-free skin at 62 years old. I have family members that still sit in the sun, and their sun damage is pretty bad (they are younger than me). They should have just stuck with sunless tanner!
Thank you Dr Dray! Also for your fans who may have watched Dr. Shereene Idriss vid about DHA, she stated in her video that she recommends self tanners as long as they are used in moderation.
Still the best dermatologist on UA-cam!
Yes!! Thank you for saying this! It’s not just the tan/colour! I have KP and I find tanning helps disguise the bumps and redness.. it’s a confidence thing
I have kp to and my legs look SO much better with fake tan, i swear fake tan helps the bumps go away to
i feel like my tuition payments should be going to you because i learn so much
In many parts of Asia we would say, "she's so fair and beautiful". Often heard would also be, "she's so pretty... BUT what a pity she's not fair".
It's true in the middle east as well
Yay Good Afternoon Dr Dray have a lovely Wednesday!!🤸🏽♀️🌞💕🍀🌻
Happy Wednesday
Love your videos! Always immensely educational and entertaining. Thank you :))
Thanks for watching!
Love the earrings you're wearing!!
Hey hey Dr. Dray!!!
Always enjoy your videos especially the vlogs.Could you do a list of drug store shampoos and conditioners with low ph levels?
This was really informative, Thanks Dr Dray😊
Oooo ... those beautiful earrings? Is there a link for those?
Thank you for this video, because it's been confusing to figure out whether self-tanning is harmful in any way, or not.
I'm about halfway through the video and what I'm hearing is self tanner is good for you 😂 love how informational your videos are ❤️
thanks for watching
@@DrDrayzday Informative vid Dr dray really what I needed to know! One question though. Is spray tanning toxic? Thanks!
Dr. Dray, you look so pretty with your ear rings.
I've been waiting for this video 🙂 thanks for the info!
Have a blessed day Dr. Dray. I get so happy when you upload videos I'm interested about hahaha.⭐🙂♥️
Thanks for watching
Thank the lord!! 🥳🙌🏻 as a self Tanner addict I watched a video from a fellow ‘dermatologist’ that gave me the fear as she insisted ‘self tan is literally the same as toasting your skin and will age you’ this video has taken away that fear so thank you! Long live self Tanner 🤘🏻
They actually said it’s the same as toasting your skin?
@@masonklein Yep. With a pop up cartoon of a toaster 🙄
Drop video link lolz
whoever said that is ridiculous because toasting ur skin causes CANCER, self tanner does not give the same effects💀
Yes I saw it too… freaked me out. Glad I came across this one.
I found this very informative and interesting. It got me thinking. I use vitamin patches since I had bariatric surgery. I just can't stomach taking all of those vitamins. My blood work seems to confirm that the vitamins are being absorbed. If sunless tanner doesn't go into the deeper layers of the skin, how do vitamin and medication patches work. What about topical medication like muscle rubs?
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray!
Happy Wednesday
That's really interesting, I love that 💛
Thanks for the great advice again. Hope you are enjoying your fall. God bless you.
Same to you!
Thank you for this. Learned a lot and a new sub here
Love this video. So helpful!
Please post an updated AM and PM skincare routine Dr. Dray. Your skin now looks divine 😍 i noticed there’s less redness and seems brighter.. Hope you could share with us products that helped get to this skin 😍
That's what I've noticed too. Dr Dray's skin looks so radiant in the video. 😊
Excellent video! Thank you and Happy Wednesday!
Thank you! You too!
Really helpful, thank you! Safe way to have a tan if you enjoy the look of it (I certainly do!)
Dr dray is Savage! U can clearly see that she has a backround in research.
I’m really excited you posted this. There’s another dermatologist here on youtube who recently posted a video about this topic too. However, they claimed that fake tanning DOES accelerate aging due to the formation of free radicals. Now I feel a bit conflicted, but I’m hoping this video was a discrete way of putting out more correct information 😅
Dr. Shereen?
@@TrangPhamNguyen Yes! Love her channel though.
yeah that's why I'm team appreciating my own skin color. you don't have to think much. so much life comfort 😀
I don't know if this is more correct... I guess they both interpreted the research differently. Also there isn't enough research on this so we have no way to know for sure.
I trust Dr. Shereen's opinion personally. She was the first one on UA-cam to warn that hyaluronic acid could dry out skin while everyone used to act like it was the best thing ever for dry skin. She knows her stuff
@@Sophya7 They are both very intelligent doctors. However, I feel more confident in trusting Dr. Dray’s analysis on this subject as she is not only an MD, but also has her PhD which would offer her more reliable research interpretation skills. Dr. Shereen is amazing as well and I love her videos. I just think there’s a reason the research was analyzed differently between both derms, as one of them has further educational credentials. I also assume that’s likely why Dr. Dray subtly posted this video after Dr. Shereen posted hers.
Hi, thank you for your video!
Can I ask you in which order should I apply the fake tan during my face skin routine? 🤔
Better at night or in the morning? After, before face cream or as a substitute? 🥰
Thank you!
Ok Doc your skin is amazing!! Plz drop your skincare routine
Dr Dray is the best
Nice to know the odd fake tan doesn’t do harm. No tan is healthy but sometimes it’s nice to smooth tone as you say. Another form of makeup :)
I have a job where I work outside 8-10 hours a day (often at elevation), and I do my best to be vigilant with sunscreen and always wear full covering clothing/hats--but trust me, your hands/lower arms will STILL get darker than anywhere else on your body (particularly the legs!). Came here to see if wearing sunless tanner would have ill effects with my job, pleased to learn it'll actually maybe help!
Thank you so much for the information! Does it also apply to erythrulose?
Would it be a good idea to apply a Q10 serum (or niacinamide) before self-tanning?
Hi Dr.Dray! Thank you for posting this video. I have one question. Can I use tretinoin while using self tanner on my face? I really hope you can answer this. Thank you in advance ❤❤❤ love your channel.
I use both, my face just sheds faster, so I use a facial tanning spray just throughout the week.
I love self tan, but since I use Tretinoin… not very good combo I guess, the inked cells leave :(
Dr. Dray, can you do a video on the skin tightening stomach wraps that are sold mostly by MLM businesses?
"My job as a dermatologist is not to oppose my beliefs on people, but to help them make informed decisions for their health." 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for these videos, these have been so helpful, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Happy Wednesday ...totally off topic but I was wondering how much 4 sigmatic coffee do you use per ounce of water, I just got it and it's way too strong for me when I followed the directions...
just curious as you are an aficionado
Seriously thank you so much for this video Dr Dray. Have a great day Dr Dray and peeps ❤️ 😍🎊💐🎉📹
Thanks for watching
Hi Dr! Can you do a vid on cooking oils like canola, vegetable, shortening?
Thank you! All I could find on this was propaganda from tanning booth companies. Now I can keep using my self tanners without worrying
Fascinating information, Dr Dray! :-) That's one product I would never have thought to use for UVA protection, or as any part of an anti-aging routine. I wouldn't mind looking like I naturally do without SPF. (Scrupulous sunscreen use is the only thing stopping me from tanning in the first place.) But I'd be worried about looking like a traffic cone instead. Are there specific products you would recommend?
Check out this video, Vlog: Trying out Bondi Sands New SPF. She links to a couple. Dr Shereene Idriss has a video with recommendations as well.
@@db-gb5xi Thanks! :-)
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray!Interesting topic. I have noticed that as I am aging when I apply self tanner in the summer it does attached to the various solar lentigos I have acquired. I thought that was interesting.
Happy Wednesday
Happy Wednesday, Dr. Dray 🌸🤍🎀

Same to you!
Hi Dr. Dray,
I watched another video on this topic from Dr Shirine Idriss another derm UA-cam fans she said it was not safe citing sources of why. 🙏🏼
love you doc!
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray...see you tomorrow x🤩💙
You too!!
Did anybody see Dr. Shareene Idriss’s video? She has a completely opposite view on sunless tanner.
Yes! I’m so confused lol
It's still something she herself uses and recommends so she was seemingly hinting at small studies and possible aging. It doesn't seem to be definitive.
I wouldn't say "completely opposite", she just has the opinion that the generated free radicals can potentially age the skin but for that recommends using an antioxidant, she still uses one and recommends her faves, so it's not really THAT different.
