well, you can ask those questions about basically everything, why this and not that (first)? probably because if something is newer it will be met with less resistance. Just like you cannot suddenly ban alcohol while a newer drugs is met with less resistance when banned.
Honestly Dr. Dray is my favorite you tuber. No BS, all facts, detailed info, quippy and dry humor which is funny as hell to me😆 Grateful she hit my feed years ago 🤗
I used self tanning products in the past, but had to stop because they caused allergic reactions. Then again, that was when almost everything was causing itchiness ; I could hardly wear makeup, with my eyes stinging and watering. Since I found your channel, Dr. Dray, and started following your advice, I am so much better, and can wear makeup again. I am so very thankful to you! And I hope you realise what a huge service you are doing for people's well-being ! You not only helped my skin condition but also helped me feel better about myself. Sending you lots of love
Huh, glad to hear there is no real drama around it. I've made my peace with my light skin by now...I don't feel, like I *have* to be at least slightly tanned in summer. But every now and then, bottle tan is kinda nice. Among other things, it allows me, to wear a wider array of colors. I'm very cool toned and with self tanner, I can wear warm, vibrant 'summer colors', without it looking 'off'.
@@shandel499 where I grew up people considered it gross and sickly looking. I apologized to people for being so pale and had to be "courteous" to others at the swimming pool by not taking my shirt off and "blinding" everyone, which had been pointed out to me as a little kid. I felt like I couldn't ever embrace my pale skin because had I indicated that I loved myself with my pale white skin, it would be considered racist or to be a white supremacist somehow. Crazy world ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’ve never used a tanning booth in my life. I had skin cancer for the first time in my life last summer that had to be removed. I’ve always slathered myself in sunscreen so that should tell everyone that it is helpful, but will not save you. This should also be a warning to others like me with medium/olive skin that you are not safe just because of your skin tone. Skin cancer is not only for individuals with fair complexions. Today I avoid the midday sun, and apply spf of 50 or higher no matter what. I’m constantly buying it but it’s a small price to pay to do what’s necessary. I started using Tanologists self tan drops that you mix into your moisturizer. They work well as long as you don’t use a moisturizer that’s too thick and you completely rub your moisturizer into your skin. I wish I had more patience to use the more advanced sunless products, but I’m too lazy for all of the prep that’s involved with those.
Where did they have to remove the skin cancer. I never wear sunscreen because I always figured I don't need to cuz I don't burn etc but reading your comment is a great reminder that us tan, olive skin etc type of people can still get skin cancer. I need to make an effort to put sunscreen on! 😫
@@Harlow_Khmer it was on the inside of my knee, a very odd place. It started off as a freckle, then I noticed it got a little larger, then I noticed that it was turning different colors and that scared me. I had a doctor tell me for year’s that it was something that I would never have to worry about because of my skin tone . How wrong he was.
@@Harlow_Khmer please wear your sunscreen! I’m half Greek and half Irish. I got the Irish skin tone. The Greek side has had far more mole removal and skin cancers due to lifelong sun exposure. The Lilly white side has not due to avoidance and lifelong sunscreen. Luckily my mom covered me head to toe in it from childhood, and I could never tolerate sun long.
@@siobhannaylor5616 I know 😫😫 I'm just so bad about it!! I don't even make an effort but I try to stay out of the sun whereas in the past especially when growing up, I would slather on freaking baby oil and lay in the sun and when I was around 13-16 my mom dated a guy that had his own tanning bed!! I would for 30min at a time. I'm 35 now and have no skin care regimen, I buy skin care and anti aging products but never use them. I definitely lucked out I don't have wrinkles and I'll be 36 in November but I definitely need to start using these products and sunscreen! 😭😭😭
Dr. Dray, thanks to you, I've started up on the Obé Fitness app workout programs daily for the last 2 weeks! I just requested you as a friend, your username sunscreen is so you, I cackled out loud when I saw that. Thank you for positively impacting my life in more ways than just skincare! 🙂 Unbeknownst to you, you have indirectly helped me out of a depressive episode. ❣
I think tanners from established companies have been well tested and are safe. I used a boutique tanner once from a Los Angeles spa. It had horse chestnut as one of its ingredients, and it made me so sick, I nearly took myself to the hospital. Buyer beware, especially when it's a product you're going to spread all over your body!
Never been in a tanning booth in my life, thank goodness. But I have been a long term user of self tanners, to take the neon blinking legs and arms to a tolerable level! Lol I appreciated you doing this video, and I will never be outside without my sunscreen. Biggest tip I have for people using sunless tanning products, is to exfoliate before applying. I typically dry brush, then shower and after shower I apply the lotion and rub it in completely. This keeps the streaking and patchy look out of the equation.
Unfortunately, the DHA in all tanning products causes me to break out in bumps all over my body. I ended up at the Urgent Care twice until I realized it was the DHA tanning ingredient that caused this.
this video couldn't have come at a better time! I literally just purchased my first bottle of sunless tanner. I live in Florida and up until the last year, I was a sunbather unfortunately. I'm now diligent with sunscreen, hats etc but I definitely miss having that sunkissed look. I appreciate you!!
Im so happy to hear this. I live in Sweden, and the tanning-habits in Scandinavia is outrageous. Despite our climate and location on the globe we have the highest skin cancer cases. a flight to Mediterran is easy and cheap, 60euro. So people that love to spend 8 hours on the beach for two weeks. Im a former tanner, stopped tanning . We have regulations when its comming to DHA, and the biggest thing is that spray-tan is a threat to lungs due to the aerosols. An im so glad so hear that its safe on the skin. i was hesitent due to DHA eventually create oxidative stress. And that it offers protection 400 nm + . Thank you!
Thanks so much for this info Dr. Dray. I’m a big fan of self tanning and an advocate for it. I used to be addicted to sunbeds when I was younger… 15 mins, 3 times a week and I was dark. The amount of times I burned was insane.. trying to sleep with the burn stinging… all just for a tan 🤦🏼♂️I can’t believe I did it but I was young & stupid. Now I self tan weekly, stay out of the sun as much as possible and now moisturising constantly so changed for the better. My skin is so much healthier and I hate seeing people go to the tanning beds but people will do what they want to do 🤷🏼♂️
I used to do that too. I really ruined my skin😔 Now it has been 1 year ago that I went. I will never ever do that again. My face is still “healing”. A lot of hyperpigmentation and damage. But it is getting better now. I really regret my visites for years at the tanning salon😔 I’m 45 now.
I ordered the LaRoche Posay UVmune after the first video you posted with it. It came today, and can’t wait to try it tomorrow. Regarding self-tan, the foam versions are great. Had excellent color from Bondi Sands- not orange, no streaks.
Yes, been using sunless tanners for quite some time. Although, not long enough...I was a sun worshiper in my younger years... For the past few years my go-to has been L'Oreal Sublime foam. Tons of people have told me it's very natural looking. It definitely works for my skin tone.
@@emmae456 Not at all. I honestly haven't found any weird coloation from any sunless tanners I have used in many. Seem to me that problem had been corrected a long time ago. years.
Good to hear L’Oréal Sublime has a foam version! I love using the foam self-tanners. I haven’t tried it, Does it dry fairly quickly and not feel sticky? Does it rub off onto your clothes or sheets? Thanks!
@@teriteri5994 It does dry pretty quickly, but it does feel a bit sticky to me. It doesn't bother me though. I've only noticed that it does rub off slightly onto my undergarments, but not always, and not a ton. Again, doesn't bother me. It washes out.
I didn't know DHA offered some long-wave protection. Please consider doing occasional reviews of self-tanners for your U.S. subscribers since the new LRP filters aren't available here. Thanks for sharing this information.
I have been a heavy user of jergens natural glow self tanning moisturizer since 2010. However, in 2019, I began a four year long battle with a random illness that no doctor at John’s Hopkins could diagnose. Long story short, we finally narrowed it down to the DHA in my sunless tanners. I apply the self Tanner once a week on Monday, and by Wednesday, I am violently ill - rapid heart rate, cramping, diarrhea, a rapid drop in blood pressure & tremors and an overall of feeling poisoned for a day or two afterwards. I have been unable to find anyone else who has experienced this. If there’s anyone out there with a similar situation , I’d love to hear from them!
Hey, thanks for sharing. Sorry, you had such a rough experience. I can somewhat understand. As a 27-year-old man, open to new ways that help me look my best, I thought I would give it a go with Tan-Luxe. I am fairly sensitive to heavy perfumes and products so I know my body but this was another level. The brain fog, headaches, overheating, and stress my body felt when using were super bad. Not fun at all. Listen to your body, you are not alone. My body reacted badly also and I am a big strong dude.
I just read on self tan video of someone sharing a similar experience and her and her doctor came to conclusion it was her self tanner she had been using for years. There are some safer self tanning option using natural DHA deriving from sugar beets. Chocolate Sun is a good brand and smells so good!
I used the Jergens gradual tan last year and it worked well but this year I am using the Hawaiian Tropic brand. The moisturizers in it are really nice and the gradual development of colour seems to be preventing people from being blinded by the glare off my white legs :)
Tanologist drops might be something you want to check out. You mix it in with your moisturizer and you can customize how light or deep you want the color to be.
Thank you Dr. Dray for always keeping us informed. I had never tried selfless tanner but wanted to try it to cover some scars on my legs. I usually do a patch test for anything new that I put on my skin, but for some reason I forgot and put on the Tanologist foam. My skin did not react well, I had a bad skin reaction to it. I still want to get a sunless tan but now I have to wait for my legs to heal. Make sure you don’t forget to do a patch test.
Yes, I use sunless tanners. Tanologist makes drops for the face and body that you can put in your skincare products, so you can experiment with the amount of color that you get. I got a sample from Target a few months ago so now that summer is pretty much here I'm ready to try it. Great video, Happy Thursday 🌞🌸🏵️
I'm so glad these sunless tanners are safe. I have a lot of spider veins and varicose veins that make me self-conscious of my legs, but it's so hot I have to wear shorts and short dresses. I saw Walmart has an equate Beauty dupe for the Jergens glow lotion. It works great and it's half the price. Now I found that the Dollar General sells a dupe for the jergens for $4.50! It is a thick lotion, but I like to put it on after showering so I get both moisturizer and tan legs.
Sally Hansen has a spray product that is like make up for the body/legs! Just a tip :). I like self tanner because of skin discoloration (for example spider veins) but especially that spray sometimes comes in handy!
@@M_K_M_K_M_K oh I didn't know they made a spray! I have a Sally Hansen tube of liquid leg makeup from a few years back. The spray would make it a lot easier and less messy I would think. Thanks for the suggestion!
@@M_K_M_K_M_K oh I absolutely love the Sally Hansen spray! Quick enough to smooth over legs in the morning (and sometimes forearms) and it lasts amazingly well!
Melanoma, BCC, SCC survivor here. I totally embrace my paleness, haven't been in the sun in 30+ years. I do like the St. Tropez self tanner, doesn't turn me orange. But I am lazy, I really don't self tan anymore. I love the LaRoche-Posey (sp?) Sunscreen, also sun protective clothing, and a SPF umbrella.
I’ve used Jergens Natural Glow for years and enjoyed. This year I’m trying Isle of Paradise drops I add to my body lotion and face moisturizer and am loving the color it gives my skin ❤️
Could you please comment on this 2018 study? Quote: The Maillard reaction between DHA and amino acids generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), namely highly reactive free radicals,17 that may attack the cell structures and degrade collagen and elastin fibers, promoting premature skin aging and wrinkle formation. The process is accelerated under sun radiation, with more than 180 % additional radicals generated during sun exposure with respect to untreated skin, thus requiring short or no sun exposure when self‐tanners are used.18 It is also relevant here to notice how, when applied on the skin, a typical DHA‐based cream attenuates the sunlight‐induced formation of vitamin D.19 Owing to the formation of ROS, it is perhaps not surprising that DHA induces DNA damage.20 More recently, scholars in the US confirmed and expanded these results, showing that exposing viable cells to DHA significantly alters the cell microenvironment, promoting the induction of cell death, in particular through internal exposures from inhalation, absorption into mucous membranes, or through broken skin.21 The team concluded that more work is necessary to understand the complex metabolic events induced by exposure to DHA.
I do use a sunless tanner and have for about 20 years. I like the Bare Minerals Faux tan (a 16 oz bottle seriously will last me about 5 years, as I don't use it every day. Just for going somewhere nice, or to a beach). It is one that has color immediately so I can see where I have already applied. I remember the Coppertone sunless tanner when I was younger. It turned you a bit of an orange color. My friend was trying to get a "tan" before our senior prom (in 1975). She didn't realize she needed to wipe it off her palms! No matter how she scrubbed, she couldn't get it off! She had orange palms for the dance!
I started tanning beds when I was 12 it very common for young girls to start around middle school. Now in the state of Oregon u must be 18 even if your parent signs for u. I'm now 34 and have given up tanning beds but the damage is done
My mum suffers sun exposure hives. I remember going on vacation during the 80s and my mom was the only one at the beach wearing long sleeves, flowy pants and big hats
I absolutely love Bondi Sands light-medium Aero foam, and also Ecotan Face Tan Water. Both so easy to use and beautiful results 😊. They’re both Australian I think!
Oregon USA here💜another great vid💯..."don't snort your sunless tanner"..hehe, that totally made me chuckle-snort, lol..I love the true-tan-look results I get from Bondi Sands...long lasting 'n no streaking👍
I love sunless tanners. Thank you for giving me peace of mind. My favorite brand is the jergens moisturizing lotion with gradual tanner. With this one, I moisturize and apply the tanner in one step. There's a specific one that I use that doesn't have that characteristic smell all tanners have, it's natural glow FIRMING daily moisturizer. ✨️ check it out
the EU is far ahead of NA in almost everything you can think of, it''s pretty insane... If we're speaking of health, the FDA is one of the most behind health agencies in the western world.
And yet again - a very helpful video when navigating the clickbaity news articles. Thank you so much! I like to use the Aero liquid gold tan from Bondi Sands because I find it looks the best on my hands, elbows, knees and feet. Had a few splotchy tans with tanologist and isle of paradise. But every person and body is different. :)
I’ve never used a tanning bed but I’ve used the spray tanning booth weekly for 5 years and have definitely breathed a lot of the solution in. Hopefully it doesn’t cause me issues down the road. It can’t be as bad as the sun. ☀️
Love my sunless tanner, I am naturally a very fair red head, I also live in Australia, so I burn if I go in the sun for more than about 10 minutes in summer time, then I peel, so no point on trying to tan from the sun for me😆 I like the loving tan range, I also like the balibody 1 hour express mousse, and the balibody gradual face tan moisturizer, it's much more even in colour than any other face tanner I have tried. I recently ordered the minetan blue Black which I am excited to try🙂 Always enjoy your videos 👍
Thank you for this video, it was VERY informative. I was surprised to read the hoarding comment as I thought that outside of the US and Canada it was really only the UK who fake tanned, particularly darker tones, and they're no longer part of the EU so I figured this would go unnoticed.
can't wait to add to to my suncare routine just as a bit of extra protection! I also love tan skin as its very forgiving for scar and pih etc so I cant wait to try this! Thanks Dr Dray :)
Dr. Dray, I have learned so much from you. I am now 53 and just started really caring for my skin 2 years ago. I am not big on makeup. Usually just my tinted sunscreen, a little blush and sadly color corrector and concealer that's not not only dark circles but bags. Anyway, I love self tanning. I used Bondi Sands for a long time but had such a hard times getting it off my toes and they I started getting patchy and looked like a leper. On my face, I've use Tanologist, St Tropez tanning luxe drops and St Tropez tanning water. I have had great luck with b.tan. They have all shades and ones with olive, violet and Carmel undertones. God please don't get the Minetan spray tan machine. Most horrific experience of my life. Mine tan and b.tan are combined somehow. I used to lay out for hours smothered in baby oil. Who knew we would suffer today with hyperpigmentation. I tried Bondi Sands gradual tanner and stunk like I self tanned every moment of the day. I do use the Bondi Sands overnight sleep mask and now I just had to order St. Tropez mousse and the Coco and Eve. I need use mousse on my face. Even Isle of Paradise is great. You can be darker by adding more drops. My friend bought the Norvell spray tan machine for her salon. I can't remember how many thousands of dollars she spent on it. I don't mind doing the foam though and no matter what I use, I have never had any transfer. Some stink more than others. I try to do it during the day. But for $10 at Walmart it works. And I usually use Too Tan To Give a Damn, but now they have I want the darkest tan possible. They do have something called b.tan forever and ever which is supposed to last 11 days but you have to apply every 3 days. I don't like to purchase from Walmart or drugstores. You don't know how long it's been on the shelf and their storage area is probably too warm for self tanners. You can go to www.minetan.com and click down to b.tan. They also offer a clean tan too. Since I am stuck with the sprayer,I might give the b.tan tanner. I think you get 20% off your first order and they have a huge selection. Also Sosu Dripping Gold is supposed to be superdark. I have yet to try that and never had any interest in Loving Tan. Oh I did order Bali Body mousse and face tanner. But I won't spend money on weekly spray tans.
I don't tan, I burn. I've been watching makeup videos from Korea, where pale skin is highly valued, and some other tutorials for paler skin, and I'm just going to lean into my porcelain skin type. I don't need tan skin. I found a really neat tutorial on yt for a modernized Marie Antoinette look that I think will be my go-to from now on.
My fiance doesn't tan he just burns too. He'll say sometimes "I'm SO pale". I always tell him that he is suppose to be pale! I love his pale skin, I think it's beautiful 😍 tanning doesn't make any since to me though.
I'm from yorkshire and in the bleak mid Winter when I was travelling home in the bus u could see all the sunbed lights in in the bedrooms if houses we passed.i has c sunbed canopy over my bed and on cold winter nights it was lovely and warming and I had a nice Tan.that was 40 years ago and I live in Australia.never go to the beach wear a cap and fake tan!!!! I'm very lucky no adverse damage from my youth. Great skin and genes.x thank God.
Wow thank you for this. I break out in a rash every time I’m exposed to the direct sunlight, to the point of having to be on medication for the rash. Sunscreen protects me from burning but not from getting skin irritation. I’m going to try sunless tanner and see if it helps.
Love self tanners. I used Clarins Radiance plus golden glow buster for body, it gives a nice gradual tan. You add a few drops in you body lotion. For more color I used 6-7 drops mixed with lotion for a part of my body, like a leg or my back, etc. That small bottler will be enough for half a year.
Happy Thursday Dr. Dray and thank you for another informative video!!! I have dark skin and am not interested in using sunless tanners, but I am so happy to have this information to share with others. You are a gem!💎
I love love love Isle of Paradise products. They have drops you can mix in your skincare to apply to your face or body. They also have mists, mousses, lotions, and oils. Not only does it give you a nice tan, if color corrects your skin. There are 3 levels from light to dark. Ok I realize this sounds like a paid review, but it’s not. I’m just a fan. No streaking. You don’t have to wash them off either
i use the st tropez gradual tanning lotion. and it’s amazing. and i’ve definitely noticed that when i use it with spf i don’t get burned and it feels protective. great video!
I’m so happy you gave us this information! I was the girl who went to tanning beds when I was younger and I totally regret it now but I do use sunless tanner now and load up on sunscreen when I’m out!
Hello from Belgium😀. Thanks for this informative video. I am 50 and an ex sunbed or sun user. Now I am just using extra dark selftaners. EU says that over 10% DHA selftaners could be toxic as they find some DHA results in urines and that DHA could cause lung cancer (threw the breath of the odor). True that none brands like to inform about the DHA %. I was using Sosu extra dark mouse and Loving tan extra dark, to hide my rosacea. It works perfectly I received compliments and everybody wanted to know what I have done. So easy, so nice, it brings back my self confidence. Due to the new EU rules, I can just use the medium one, and the coverage is not so good 😢. If I try to buy them threw international sites they are overpriced. This is soo stupid because as I wrote before they are helping a lot. With selftaners we have the same result in one night than a week-end in the sun! Evenmore it helps a bit against the sun damages. Keep informing us Dr 😀🙏.
I was just coming on UA-cam to ask you about DHA and sunless tanning products, but you're already a step ahead! Thank you for this! I can't believe I spent so much time in tanning beds (usually 5 times a week at max number of minutes) from the age of 19 to about 25. I only use sunless tanning products now. I've used soo many sunless tanning products. My favorite among all is Loving Tan in Ultra Dark & their new Platinum formula (6 hrs to develop). I've recently found B.Tan products give great color for a lot less money and develop in 1-4 hrs. ($10!)
I've been a long time night shift worker of Scottish decent so I'm pale as they come :/ I LOVE Sunless tanners. My favorite for simplicity is jergens natural glow but I've just started using Bondi sands gradual tanning milk and it's amazing. Takes a couple more days to build up to that nice solid color (first 2 days it's kinda just clings to wrists and elbows) but it's longevity is amazing. And when I want to really put some effort in, I use Bondi sands 1 hour express or ultra day tanning foam. I'm constantly trying to get everyone on the Sunless tanning train. I have two friends who are addicted to tanning bads and laying out in the sun and it breaks my heart and stresses me out. They are so so dark it's scary.
Thanks to you, dear Dr Dray, my new LRP Uvamune just arrived yesterday. It was luxurious on the back of my hand and I can’t wait to apply it to my face today.
Thank you for this information! I use a sunless tanner once a week. I’ve tried many and Tanologist has been my favorite. It doesn’t stain my clothes or sheets! Which my husband appreciates lol
I use sunless tanner religiously at least once a week. Im very very pale and love having color. I was a competitive swimmer for 14 years so even with sunscreen i still got color. Now on my day off ill slap sunless tanner on and after a while wash it off. During the summer i dont like sleeping with it on. Its just too sticky and hot. Ive turned sunless tanning into a routine just like me washing my hair or shaving my legs.
Thank you for this video! We offer spray tans at my spa and like to only offer the cleanest options available. This info will be so great if my clients have questions about the new standards.
I’m so gad I don’t need to worry, because I just bought a self-tanning product in the EU because of one of your videos for the. I have not used it yet, but I bought it for the extra protection this might give. The reason I have not used it is the fear of streaking…
Thanks for the explanation! I am typically quite fair and I never tan in the sun. grew up in Arizona where it’s too hot to be outside and now I live in Belgium where it’s often cloudy so I love sunless tanner.
For folks interested in sunless tanners/applications, check out videos from Dr. Sam Ellis and Dr. Shereene Idriss. They both recommend their favorites and they also recommend them in their pregnancy videos.
Great information! I do use a sunless tanning product in the summer. I like Isle of Paradise self tanning drops that I can mix into my moisturizer. Pretty fool-proof!
Thanks for this information! I consider myself a very experienced self tanner/am self tan obsessed and this news is so disappointing. I have such a hard time getting any color from self tanners even using them entirely correct, as well as prep, post care, etc. I look and feel a million times better with a tan and consider it my self care routine. In the past I used beds and got very dark but as I got older I cared more about my health. I now use the darkest self tanners I can find multiple days in a row to get a nice medium color. I recently discovered instant tanner in different brands that do not contain Dha and actually get me dark but are all too chalky looking and transfer on to clothes since they are wash offs. Luckily most people do not have a problem getting dark eith a lower % of dha. My current self tanner has 20% dha listed on the bottle. It does not make me weirdly dark or orange except I can't use it on my hands or feet.
@@lisahammond8697 My favorite instant tanner is currently the Bondi sands spray, there is only one shade but it's a great dark brown. It even held up when I spent hours hauling dirt into my garden. It sometimes transfers but seems to wash out. I haven't tried wearing white with it yet. You definitely need a brush to blend it out and work in small sections at a time. Bondi sands also makes non spray instant tanners in lighter colors but I find them a lot more orange on my skin. They always have sales on their website so wait for a sale and it's super affordable of you want to try some different ones. I've also tried Bali body which I did not like as much and i think it's very over priced.
I used sunless tanner for my legs during summer last year. I enjoyed it. I’d like to try it on my face, but I have melasma and I’m not sure how it would look 😬
Have a nice day! II have never used sunless taner! I tried tanning before once in my younger days and felt like I was wasting my time. I had too much energy for it....lol! Because I've always had skin that tanned easily! I never liked being in the sun too long. We didn't talk about sunscreen before! For several years now, I have been taking care of my skin and applying sunscreen every day!
I just bought a bottle of the Loving Tan 2 Hour Express in deep. I am so fair that my veins really show. I love using that for that camouflage. It also covers up the redness on my face, which is nice. I keep this on for three hours. I tried one that you put on before bed. That stuff was so sticky that I looked like a wooly mammoth the next day from my cats.
I think I am one of the few that hates Loving Tan. It's the only self tanner that makes me look like Donald Trump. And the price for that small bottle is outsgeous.
my fave is st. Tropez in shower version. for instant, overnight, I use Bondi Sans mousse. I'm still learning the best way to maintain without streaks as it fades. still learning how to keep shaved legs while keeping tan ( would be important for me at the beach). sweat and sand ruin my sunless tan if at the beach. I'm a chemist so I love referencing the maillard reaction when teaching chemistry to non scientists.
Thank you for this video !! The information is to the point and easy to understand. I’ll be passing this link onto my clients! my favorite gradual tanner is by farmhouse fresh it’s called bronze fox and you can add it to any lotion you own so you can control how much of the tanner you use.
We wanna see you dabble in it Dr. Dray! Would frikkin LOVE to "follow along" when you build a tan with a great self-tanner! Also, I see that pink lip - super complimentary colour for you.😊💓
Twice when I used sunless tanners with DHA, my face and body broke out and I had to visit the Urgent Care. I’m very scared now to try another one since I think the DHA was the common ingredient. I might add that nothing has ever caused my face or body to break out before.
So glad to see that others have had the same severe adverse reaction using DHA. It took me a while to figure out what the ingredient was-it’s the ingredient that actually causes you to tan & all tanners seem to contain DHA, so hopefully there will be a better option on the market at some point.
Ohhh this would pertain to loving tans newest tanner I believe it’s been found to have 12% dha. There’s also a self tanner by glow pro tans that does 12&14% so the super dark ones like those are gonna have to change in EU
Hi Dr.Dray! My sister called and said Dr.Dray amazing. She put sunscreen on her kids and they loved it, her 4 yr old even asked her this morning to have his own to put his backpack to bring to school 💕💕😃😃😃
This video is just in time as I just bought a self-tan cream the day before yesterday, I feel even better now knowing that it offers some sun protection, as I am always looking for makeup products with some spf, just to have a bit of extra protection on top of my regular sun screen. Thanks!
Dr Idriss (derm on youtube) has a video on how sunless tanners still "grill" the skin and age it even without the sun. That turning brown is like roasting the skin!!!!
Thank You Dr. Dray!! I've Often Wondered about Self Tanners!! This is Great Information!! Happy Thursday!! Have a Lovely Day!! Love and Blessings!!🙏🦜🌷🌷💕🙏
Coppertone came out with a sunscreen/ sunless tan hybrid broad spectrum spf 30 . I have been using the jergens/or nock off brands “moisturizer with gradual tanning” for a while during the summer but it can get kind of heavy and sticky using that and then sunscreen not to talk about the time, having a two in one that I can reapply seems great to me. Let’s see how it works
I'm a guy, I'm pale and used to try to sunbathe but I would just burn so quickly stopped. discovered st Tropez 3h express tan and it changed my life. my friends kinda tease me for it, but I dont care cause now I'm not self conscious about my super pale legs and arms when wearing shorts and short sleeves. also I've stopped going out in the sun as much in the hope of tanning
I think you're smart and will be attractive longer for thinking this way! I know a lot of people equate darker skin with masculinity, but I don't! Good for taking care of your skin!
Thank you, really no non-sense helpful! I do use sunless tanners as I like the look of a gentle glow (evens out my skintone / pigmentation like you said)
I like Senederm by senegence Bronze Coconut milk spray. Easy to use, I don’t have to use moisturizer when reapplying mid week. I have highly sensitive skin. My skin does not react negatively to this product. Jergens I love but I get a slight itchy feeling from it. Thank you for what you do here on your channel for us. 🙂
I dont understand why the EU has not banned tanning beds first, isnt it more important?
There is a lot of hypocricy in politics. Safer drugs such as magic mushrooms are illegal while dangerous alcohol, tobacco, meat and sugar is legal.
@@RynaxAlienmeat??
well, you can ask those questions about basically everything, why this and not that (first)?
probably because if something is newer it will be met with less resistance. Just like you cannot suddenly ban alcohol while a newer drugs is met with less resistance when banned.
To be honest, I think this was the most educational video on self tanning and I watched hundreds different ones. Thank you!
Glad to hear it, I embrace my skin too. Im very white and wont go changing that anytime soon.
white =ethereal. Think I am a majestic fae. lol I am pastey white as well
I hope I can make peace with being pale AF some day
@@shandel499 where I grew up people considered it gross and sickly looking.
Also to remind everyone that spf wears off after only a few hours, remember to reapply twice even 3 times a day if you’re in the sun! 🤍
Great job!
Agreed! I just started sunless tanning this year.
Make sure you regularly get checked for skin cancer.
Cut seed oils out of your life & you will stop burning. After that get some sun every day for vitamin D.
I really regret my visites for years at the tanning salon😔
I’m 45 now.
I ordered the LaRoche Posay UVmune after the first video you posted with it. It came today, and can’t wait to try it tomorrow. Regarding self-tan, the foam versions are great. Had excellent color from Bondi Sands- not orange, no streaks.
Royal blue is a stunning color on you Dr Dray!
Yes, been using sunless tanners for quite some time. Although, not long enough...I was a sun worshiper in my younger years...
For the past few years my go-to has been L'Oreal Sublime foam. Tons of people have told me it's very natural looking. It definitely works for my skin tone.
Do you find it to be orange toned?
@@emmae456 Not at all. I honestly haven't found any weird coloation from any sunless tanners I have used in many. Seem to me that problem had been corrected a long time ago. years.
Love this one too
Good to hear L’Oréal Sublime has a foam version!
You look extra extra beautiful today Dr. Dray! Your skin is GLOWING. It always is but today there’s something extra. Stunning 🥰

@@DrDrayzday Yes, on the previous video as well, you had a glow, maybe a tinted moisturizer?
Is this illness a result of DHA in combination with some kind of other condition you have ?
Hey, thanks for sharing. Sorry, you had such a rough experience. I can somewhat understand. As a 27-year-old man, open to new ways that help me look my best, I thought I would give it a go with Tan-Luxe. I am fairly sensitive to heavy perfumes and products so I know my body but this was another level. The brain fog, headaches, overheating, and stress my body felt when using were super bad. Not fun at all. Listen to your body, you are not alone. My body reacted badly also and I am a big strong dude.
There was a recall for Jergens self tanning lotion for a bacterial contamination. I wonder if that was the cause
Thank you for sharing this it must have been very stressful trying to narrow down the culprit.
Oh the days of Hawaiian Tropic and Bannana boat tanning oil. Aww the nostalgia of the smell of the Hawaiian tropic takes me back to my tanning days.
Ooooh, I’ll have to try the Hawaiian Tropic. The Jorgensen works great but I can’t stand the smell!
Go to Japan. They would love your glaring white skin. Their top selling products are skin whitening. We always seem to want what we don’t have. 😊
My family likes to say I reflect light and make Casper the ghost look tan.
Does it have an orangey finish ?
@@superette. Last summer I got the body foam version and used it a couple of times and it wasn't orangey, but I always go with the lighter shade

The process is accelerated under sun radiation, with more than 180 % additional radicals generated during sun exposure with respect to untreated skin, thus requiring short or no sun exposure when self‐tanners are used.18 It is also relevant here to notice how, when applied on the skin, a typical DHA‐based cream attenuates the sunlight‐induced formation of vitamin D.19
Owing to the formation of ROS, it is perhaps not surprising that DHA induces DNA damage.20 More recently, scholars in the US confirmed and expanded these results, showing that exposing viable cells to DHA significantly alters the cell microenvironment, promoting the induction of cell death, in particular through internal exposures from inhalation, absorption into mucous membranes, or through broken skin.21 The team concluded that more work is necessary to understand the complex metabolic events induced by exposure to DHA.

This came in at the perfect time as I'm sitting here having just applied self tanner. Thank you!

Love my sunless tanner, I am naturally a very fair red head, I also live in Australia, so I burn if I go in the sun for more than about 10 minutes in summer time, then I peel, so no point on trying to tan from the sun for me😆
I like the loving tan range, I also like the balibody 1 hour express mousse, and the balibody gradual face tan moisturizer, it's much more even in colour than any other face tanner I have tried.
I recently ordered the minetan blue Black which I am excited to try🙂
Always enjoy your videos 👍
For everyone watching this, you are beautiful without a tan. Embrace your natural beauty, and be the pale awesome person you are! Own it.
Haha no
Thank you for this video, it was VERY informative.
Happy Thursday, Doc! Thanks so much for posting this today; I have been really interested in DHA research lately, so this is right on time. 😃

I don't tan, I burn. I've been watching makeup videos from Korea, where pale skin is highly valued, and some other tutorials for paler skin, and I'm just going to lean into my porcelain skin type.

I'm glad you caught yours in time!! So gf
Dr dray u have found the key to aging backwards… how is this possible?!?!
You can't age backwards. Even there's a man who is trying to do that and his name is Bryan Johnson. He has a youtube channel but he's obsessive
Thank you for this information!
I use a sunless tanner once a week. I’ve tried many and Tanologist has been my favorite. It doesn’t stain my clothes or sheets! Which my husband appreciates lol
Which one do you use? Mousse or drops? Thank you!!
As always, such an excellent explanation
I foresee more sunless tanning companies incorporating spf into their products.
Hi Allie, I’m allergic to DHA. Which products do you use that are free of it ?
Thanks for the info. I was always wary of DHA, but now I can chill out about it 🙂
Thanks for this topic. I was actually going to ask you about the sunless tanners. Glad to know it's safe.
Love sunless tanners year round actually so thanks for the great information!
I'm allergic to DHA and the smell is horrible. Would love to get some recommendations on more natural organic products from you.
There is no other sunless tan product aproved by the FDA. Accept your white skin if you are allergic.
Loving Tan is the best!
I think I am one of the few that hates Loving Tan. It's the only self tanner that makes me look like Donald Trump. And the price for that small bottle is outsgeous.
Love the way you broke this down, great video as always. Thank you Dr. Dray!! 💛🙌
my fave is st.
Thank you so much for the info! I use Jergens gradual tanner. I don't want to damage my skin like I used to when I was young!!
I am extremely pale and have never used sunless tanner. I just dgaf if my white white skin bothers other people.
Maillard reaction… so basically we are browning like a piece of steak on a skillet? 😂😂😂😂😂
Also, I see that pink lip - super complimentary colour for you.😊💓
Omg 20 plus years ago, i used tanning beds in the winter
Twice when I used sunless tanners with DHA, my face and body broke out and I had to visit the Urgent Care. I’m very scared now to try another one since I think the DHA was the common ingredient. I might add that nothing has ever caused my face or body to break out before.
Same thing for me….broke out with itchy bumps….DHA is the culprit …
Any substitutes for DHA?
So glad to see that others have had the same severe adverse reaction using DHA. It took me a while to figure out what the ingredient was-it’s the ingredient that actually causes you to tan & all tanners seem to contain DHA, so hopefully there will be a better option on the market at some point.
I’m obsessed with the Bondi Sands Aero foam it’s so easy and blends well and doesn’t look orange!!!
Me too!
Yes! So natural looking! I bought it in Ulta’s days of spring sale at 50% off. I bought 4 different brands and this one is my favorite
I used to use that one & love it! I will say I switched to their PURE line and I'm loving the sleeping mask and body lotion from it
I found some at TJ Maxx and use it for overnight tan.
Ohhh this would pertain to loving tans newest tanner I believe it’s been found to have 12% dha. There’s also a self tanner by glow pro tans that does 12&14% so the super dark ones like those are gonna have to change in EU
You heard it here first: DONT GO SNORTING YOUR SUNLESS TANNERS!
Hi Dr.Dray! My sister called and said Dr.Dray amazing. She put sunscreen on her kids and they loved it, her 4 yr old even asked her this morning to have his own to put his backpack to bring to school 💕💕😃😃😃
that is great to hear!
This was really informative, thank you!
Thankyou! I was always wondering if we have been clogging our livers with the chemicals in these , so thanks for the great info.
This video is just in time as I just bought a self-tan cream the day before yesterday, I feel even better now knowing that it offers some sun protection, as I am always looking for makeup products with some spf, just to have a bit of extra protection on top of my regular sun screen. Thanks!
They do not offer sun protection
So informative! I love Norvell sunless tan line.❤🌞 I use it year round.
Greetings Jackie Marsh hope u r well n Happy Thursday😀👍💜….
You too!!

@@DrDrayzday Thank You Gorgeous Lady!! I Hope You're Having a Magnificent Day!! Love and Blessings Always Dear Friend!🙏💕🙏
Thanks Dr Dray ! Really cool information in regards to fake tanning. Have a great day, and I’ll see ya tomorrow, bye 👋
"The Man Tan" Great historical fact.
Where could I purchase this product?
@@pippipdidilydoo7642 I bought it at Target
b.tan gives me an incredible faux tan which I do only because I don't tan evenly when sun bathing. You can even buy it at Walmart.
Yes the mouse it great!
I do use sunless tanners as I like the look of a gentle glow (evens out my skintone / pigmentation like you said)
Happy Thursday, Dr. Dray 🤍🌸☀️🎀👒💐😊
Happy Thursday!
Happy Thursday!! Have a Wonderful Day!!🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷
I use the Jergens and it works beautifully
I like Senederm by senegence Bronze Coconut milk spray. Easy to use, I don’t have to use moisturizer when reapplying mid week. I have highly sensitive skin. My skin does not react negatively to this product. Jergens I love but I get a slight itchy feeling from it. Thank you for what you do here on your channel for us. 🙂
Love that stuff!
