The organisation contacted me two days ago that a patient needs my bone marrow. I'm soo excited even though I am a nurse and familiar with medical procedures. But this is a whole other thing. And I definitely want to meet the recipient and get to know his or her story.

I donated after about 10 years on a register. I will never know who received it. Apart from it was a guy in his twenties. Who had days to live and was in isolation at a hospital. A couple of months later I heard it had worked and he was home and well. Then I believe about 8 months later that he had a recurrence and died. I was heart broken. This must now be about 15 years ago. To this day. I so wish they had taken more from my body that was needed and that he was still alive. From time to time. I think about him. Wishing I could of done more. It's like I let him down.

I'm not a professional in this area but I think it has to do with their DNA. DNA is what shapes who you are as a person so, when there is a match, two people can have a strong resemblance. If you watch a few of these youtube bone marrow donor / recipients videos, most of them do look kin to each other. I wonder sometimes if they share the same family tree in their past generations but don't know it. How else would DNA be a match if they are not from the same family tree or some sort.
