I don't think we got these in the UK, which is a shame. I can see what Hasbro were trying to do - pocket money accessories that would give extra play value to figures, and were perfect for children who couldn't afford the more complex vehicles
I had the Rope Walker and the Rope Crosser when I was a kid. Tons of play-hours with those nifty devices. I eventually tied both strings together to make a longer one with a hook at both ends. Their locomotion mechanisms made me view them more as terrain-specific mini-vehicles, like the "accessories" that came with some of the Sky Commander toys in '87. I vaguely remember the other Action Pack toys being on store pegs, but to be honest the card art on all the toys featured the entire line so I could just be confusing memories in my brain. I think they may have sold better if the price point was raised to include a figure or if Hasbro/Tomy produced double-packs (one Joe, one Cobra per card and marketed it as a kind of head-to-head competition between the two factions - "Who's tech is better? There's only one way to find out!"). Just one of these small accessories on a comparatively over-sized card may have seemed a little underwhelming.
I vaguely recall these, after watching this review. I didn't buy them because they look silly. I am not a fan of wind up toys, save for the Zoids, they are awesome!! I will buy these now, for the sake of collecting. I think my 7 year old nephew, my GI Joe buddy, will have fun with them. Kevin, thx for the review, I would have probably not remembered these if you hadn't reviewed them.
I have to say the radar dish is my favorite out of the 1987 motorized packs. Saw a stop motion movie on youtube where the bad guys stole one of these packs and threatened to use it as some sort of weapon.
THE FACT THAT THEY COST AS MUCH AS A FIGURE WAS A HUGE NO GO FOR ME. I LOVED FIGURES MORE THAN ANY JET OR TRUCK . FIGURES ON CARD WAY MORE VALUABLE TO ME AS A CHILD AND AS A COLLECTOR TODAY.
I had three of the cobra packs. In 1987 I had an allowance and between that and my birthday I had every figure from the 1987 lineup. So I bought these out of just plain default. They were pretty mediocre.
I'm having a hard time finding these packs in working order or just finding them at all! If anyone has any leads I would really appreciate it I only own two and they're from the first line
as a kid, I didn't care for these... they were too cumbersome to use as backpacks, and were kindof cheesy... as an adult, I may want to pick up a radar pack, just as a diorama accessory...
awesome video. I pass over a moc one of these at the comic store all the time. Just not into moc right now. at 14 USD id prob just open it lol. like a funskool figure. I know blasphemy
Except for the chopper, they're pretty useless. The rope walker is pretty awkward to use. The aa gun is just a gun. And no kid wants to buy something that's just a radar.
I had the radar dish. No nonsense, simplest and best!
I picked up the Anti Aircraft pack pretty cheap at Roll out Roll call this year and love it! works perfectly too
i remember these but the helicopter was the only one i wanted,it seemed the most useful.
See you gotta rig the radar detector to shoot lasers when Cobra comes and get the hell out of there. lol Worked like a charm.

Another great video

had the radar dish it was a nice recon accessory. like the Cobra drill the best. made me think of the episode where Cobra steals the explosive gas.

I I loved those as a kid. I still have my original motorized radar station.
I remember the Helicopter pack being used in one of the Action Force Monthly comics stories... www.bloodforthebaron.com/comics/maf/027/index.html

Yeah I think the vehicle ones are the most useful and fun for a kid but why get any if you can buy a figure instead?
Wow, a set that still works
me and my buddies had a good number of them, all broke after a few (combined) hours of use

There were some of the last 80s GIjoe I bought.
Had a few as a child. I think the price was close to figure price. For my allowance I always picked a figure.

I do not remember these things at all. While I did enjoy your review, I plan to never add these to my collection.
