Laptops were initially manufactured with a CPU socket, just like they are now on motherboards. However, they soon started soldering them, understandably, as it generated more profit. After experiencing significant heating issues with older models, users were told that the CPU had failed and that they needed to buy a new laptop. Hey man, just a question on 4070 laptops. I know you discussed it plenty and it turned out to be basically equal to 3070ti, but in Legion 5 pro 2023 review you published, the 1% low was actually much worse than 3070ti. I wonder if with updated drivers the current scenario for 4070 improved vs a few months back. You are the best!
I know this probably isn't the answer but just trying to help I'd say if you don't currently have a 3000 series laptop, 4060 or 4070 are no-brainers, great bang for the buck ( even though the 4060 is better when thinking about cost-benefit ) but even if it costs a lot more the 4080 or 4090 are much better choices ( I'll buy a 4080 one myself next year, the improvement from my current 3060 is around 108%, not taking into account the processor, ram differences and everything else pretty much ).
Thanks, I appreciate your answer. Currently rocking a 3070 legion 5, I am still pondering if I should get a 4070 laptop (with current BF sales + re-selling the current one, the upgrade would not cost me much) or go for a 4080 (EU prices for these are atrocious)
@@andreabeccarisi1126 4070 is just a bad deal for mobile. The thing is, usually it cost almost 300 Euro to step up from 4060 to 4070 but you don't get more VRAM or a significant performance boost. I'll say its either 4060 or 4080 for mobile, skip the 4070. 4070 to 4080 is such a significant step up in performance that it is actually worth it if you can afford.
I'm a PC gamer for 3 decades and I just switched to a laptop. I think gaming laptop should be cheaper to give everyone a chance to improved their life. I got my first gaming laptop for $200 used a year ago. It has a gpu call GTX 1050 Ti and it also come with 16GB of RAM/ 1TB SSD for storage. I don't if it's special since it's my first gaming laptop, but it able to play most triple-A games like Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield and Alan Wake 2 at 1080p after I tweak some of it settings. My videos is up if anyone is interested.
@bballcrazeddan23 Probably just as loud as the 4080 in turbo mode but idk in games yet. Probably closer to the Helios 18 if not slightly louder due to the smaller chassis. I still have yet to test games though.
If its a gaming laptop, cooling is paramount to me. Some companies shove the highest powered cpu/gpu in as possible and you never get full capability out of it cause of thermals
Could you maybe make a guide on how to properly clean the keyboard / outside of a high end laptop without risk of damage or degradation? I have a ROG Strix G17 and I'd love to give it some good cleaning regularly but don't know how to approach it
i think upgrade option is more important than ports, most of chunky laptop have enought port and slim laptop has enough wide bandwidth usb c to use hub. ram and storage upgrade is very important for customer who work in multimedia and creation field
My best value laptop was a HP ProBook 4540s from 2013 with i5 and dedicated graphics. it cost 500 euro. Still works today, just changed the screen, updated the ram and ssd. I can still play on it old games. Just the battery died. Today it's his 11 year birthday
thank you so much, I'm a gamer and going to go Curry's tomorrow to buy a new laptop, due to my current one being to old and very little storage and the max fps i get on my games is between 30/40 and didn't really know what to look for and this video helped me a lot.

Hello Jarrod. Thank you for this awesome video. I'm from Iran and I ordered Legion slim 5i i7 13700H+4060 125W 16GB DDR5 5200 1TB nvme 16" 1600p 100% srgb. Will get it in a couple days. Jumping from Intel HD Graphics 520 Asus vivobook to this laptop. Dunno if I'll feel the differnce. I'm so excited!!!! Keep up the good work and thank you.
Surprisingly I love my Aero 15 3060. I love the screen. The 4K Oled is just so nice. Next upgrade will be the Prometheus series when the 5000 Gpus come out.
1) Gpu can't be replaced, so choosing a good GPU is important 2) Cpu or processor which is the brain of the laptop is also important as some games requires more cpu than Gpu 3) Ram and ssd is also important -> 1 TB ( For ram we can upgrade, but cpu and GPU we can't upgrade so choose wisely) 4) Size of lap (14,15,16) easily portable, 17 & 18 tough 5) Screen i) Brightness (300-500 nits) ii) high refresh rate -> 144hz refresh rate Iii) low response rate under 10ms Iv) high color gamut -> 90% of srgb covering v) Resolution - 1080p for small size 1440 for large size V) good resolution 6) Battery - big laps contain big batteries and small laps contain small 7) check what were all the ports are available 8) check detailed reviews

I recently picked up a Nitro 5 AN515-58-50YE (2022) with RTX 3050 and i5 12500H which I got for around $1000 including Tax for my work(I don't know why Laptops are so expensive in my country Philippines, $600 laptops in the US costs around $1000-1100 here, RTX 4050 Laptops cost $1400 which is insane) and your tips definitely helped me to pick it up. It was the best deal around me as newer laptops were a lot more expensive ($100-$200 more) with inferior GPUs RTX 2050. I didn't need a much more powerful spec'd one as I do have a decent Gaming Desktop(I just need something decently powerful enough when I'm on the go or on vacation). I can't thank you enough Jarrod, your dedication in giving us benchmarks and tests for Laptops is a godsend.
@@sakamoto8354 nahh. You can't find that in that price here in my country. Cheapest 4050 variant here is $1400 at least. You can find one at $1200 but it's the lower power variant with the MSI GF63 thin. Not worth it. You can find one online but I prefer to get locally on a mall cause I can get it via installment. And I got it with another $100 discount netting to just $900.
Tips 1 : don't buy msi ? With my 2013 MsI laptops that I love and still running fine. I replaced GPU and battery it was so easy like a dekstop. I'm kinda disappointed how the brand headed with their new products. With motherboard soldering components and seems less time proof if something went wrong. I don't like the USB shrink and position and heard the quality diminished when the price goes up. Honestly I could buy a under 1000€ laptop the performance difference will be astounding compared to a 2013 gaming PC. especially playing in 1080p 60fps only. Maybe it's time to have my first desktop PC. For now my Xbox series X and ps5 acquisition help to cope with a 2013 gaming PC that is still running great for games released to 2019 max.
I have purchased Acer Nitro 16 R7 4050 for 1199 euros. This is my first gaming laptop. Coming from an i3 laptop of 2017 i hope it is good. I am just a little nervous as no one on UA-cam talks about it.😅
Just want to add that sometimes it is possible to change the GPU, of it is the MXM module. It’s like the desktop graphic card which you can remove from motherboard.
Depends what you need and want. I feel I want one to bring up north and plug on my living 4k tv... My big pc 2080 ti 19, is still great does the job on 1440p ultra on most games today, but it's loud and I rather put it in my pc room, so I will only do that and not run around doing other stuff.
I feel like a 18 inch would suit me well but not sure. I'm a truck driver and can't carry my desktop on the road for weeks but I feel a larger laptop would be fine but I don't know if it affects performance
Thanks for the great tips! Would you consider defining the list of games and target framerates as the tip #1.5? You can easily be willing to play at 1440p everything max out but spend no more than $700. :) (For those who're not into the specs completely)
I just get lenovo legion pro 5i 8th gen with 4060 ,and i7 32gb...im very happy and believe gonna be more than fine in the next 5 years. For just 1700 euros..
I got a msi stealth 16 studio for around £1599 here in the UK which is a fantastic deal for Black Friday ! Lucky in the USA where all technology is cheaper compared to here .
I currently cannot find a match for tip 4! Nothing is great until you spend $$3K or more! Most displays are 300-350 nits. Asus is now closing in on 500 nits...but dont support HDR. Vivobook and Zenbook Pro models have OLED displays in the 400-600 nit range but come in thin, lower wattage chassis that still overheat and shut down. I am about ready to just give up and wait a couple years to see if manufacturers get serious about this!
Specs I'm looking for in my dream gaming laptop: i7 or i9, early rtx 40 series or late 30 series, 1tb SSD, 16gb or 32gb RAM, weighing less than 2kg and low to no fan noise (but that doesn't matter much to me because I'm willing to play all my games on low settings).
Thank you for the very insightful video. I have plans on getting a replacement laptop for both work and play. Would be nice to have something which is lesser than 2kg, has decent entry level performance that won't break the bank account 😗.
Don't cheap out or you'll end up with a plastic junk rectangle. But also don't overspend on shtuff like razer or apple. And if you want max performance and have the spare space to set it up, do a desktop pc. Also from personal experience and my co workers, dont get the cheapest msi naff
Heyy, i just recently came across your channel and i really like ur detailed tests and honest reviews. Just a small suggestion though for real world usage apart from gaming, like in da vinci , adobe premiere etc. it would be more helpful to see results of exporting and editing some high quality footage and even in blender using the classroom scene or something similar as a standard. These would convey more meaningful information as to how capable these machines are and if they are significantly better than our existing system.
The Puget suite of benchmarks make it easy to see how laptops compare with each other. The reviews also all include Blender Classroom scene results. This will all be listed under the Content Creation timestamp on videos.
Hmmm i wouldn't say 300nits is a MUST cause my laptop has a 250nits screen and I use it for school and work daily n I almost never turn it up to 100% brightness unless I'm gaming seriously
Acer predator helio 16 (i9 4070) vs Asus rog stix g16 (i9 4060) which one is overall good.? Video editing, photoshop and gaming are priority.which one have the best display quality for content creation and which one have overall build quality..plz reply
8:18 i finalized my choice but there are no reviews on youtube. Asus tuf f15 i7 13620h + 4060. 😢 But i saw i7 12th gen H + 4060 those laptop reviews ao those all are good. So i am thinking this newer asus tuf f15 i7 13620h + 4060 also plays real good.
Ive bought an Alienware m17 r5 6800h/3070ti/16ddr5/512 for £955. Dell refurb with 11mo warranty in like new condition. It's a good replacement of my Nitro 5 10400h/1660ti/16ddr4/512 in excellent condition sold for £400.
He forgets to mention about cooling systems : how much cooling fan and cooling pipe in a laptop. You can't get optimum performance when everything is hot as burning.
Mist "gaming" Laptop are 1080 144hz display. At 1080p the CPU does the most. Connect to an external display and set a high resolution or create a custom resolution higher than 1080p like 1440p and the GPU will matter most. I have a 306p laptop and I noticed that my CPU temps are much better at 1440p gaming than 1080p gaming and it feels way snappier than if it were running on the laptop display. So yeah.... CPU and GPU will matter the most 120hz and great colors is more than enough for a great experience.
I'm planning to get my first SSD storage laptop, preferably gaming laptop plus one for work. Willing to spend $1,500 on each. Hopefully I'll find ones that weight less than 2kg each.
I have a dilemma. Buying my very first gaming laptop and stuck between two options - 1) Lenovo Legion S5 and 2) Lenovo LOQ 15.
@@andreabeccarisi1126u will only get like 10% more performance. Im on a Legion 5 with 3070 too and I dont feel its slow in any point.
@@andreabeccarisi1126no sense in switching to 4070, it's either 4080 or nothing for me.
i ordered my laptop like just 10 hours ago and am glad i checked all these tips
What did you get?
Already got Jarrod's advice and got my strix g16.
Time to send this to anybody that ever asks me about a gaming laptop to buy
Glad to join this tech “family” never had a laptop, but I’m definitely getting my research from these videos thank you 😀😎
Great work bro , Awesome explanation.😍
Can’t wait for the tier list 🤤
Early next week!
I have a laptop that Jarrod unfortunately doesn't (the Acer Predator Helios 16 2023 with the Mini-LED screen), and it appears to be really great.
@@cameronbosch1213 how is the Fan noise on that one? Closer to the Helios 16 with 4060 (low) or closer to Helios 18 with 4080 (relatively high)?
@bballcrazeddan23 Probably just as loud as the 4080 in turbo mode but idk in games yet. Probably closer to the Helios 18 if not slightly louder due to the smaller chassis. I still have yet to test games though.
If its a gaming laptop, cooling is paramount to me. Some companies shove the highest powered cpu/gpu in as possible and you never get full capability out of it cause of thermals
Could you maybe make a guide on how to properly clean the keyboard / outside of a high end laptop without risk of damage or degradation? I have a ROG Strix G17 and I'd love to give it some good cleaning regularly but don't know how to approach it
My 7 tips in order.
1) GPU
2) CPU
3) Screen quality and Refresh rate (not resolution)
4) Chassis
5) Trackpad
6) Battery
7) SSD/Memory
I found this video just after I purchased a gaming laptop. Thankfully the loq 15 is really good.
This is incredible explanation. My gratitude sir
i think upgrade option is more important than ports, most of chunky laptop have enought port and slim laptop has enough wide bandwidth usb c to use hub. ram and storage upgrade is very important for customer who work in multimedia and creation field
I always appreciate and enjoy your videos and advice
thank you for your content.i have been watching your videos that are full of details and specifications. also your deals on gaming laptops are very good.
they both have the same feature. I live in Sweden. Which one should I buy?
MSI Thin GF63 - i5 | 16GB | 512GB | RTX 4060
--
Lenovo LOQ 15IRH815.6" - i5-12450H - GeForce RTX 4060 - 16GB - 512GB
The price of both is the same 850 euro
I would prefer the loq 15 imo, anyway its been 8 months so which one did you buy
A very informative video 🙌
Hello Jarrod. Thank you for this awesome video. I'm from Iran and I ordered Legion slim 5i i7 13700H+4060 125W 16GB DDR5 5200 1TB nvme 16" 1600p 100% srgb. Will get it in a couple days. Jumping from Intel HD Graphics 520 Asus vivobook to this laptop. Dunno if I'll feel the differnce. I'm so excited!!!! Keep up the good work and thank you.
another rip: it you're outside the us, count all prices as 2-3x larger
You always have amazing t-shirts, a real connoisseur sir!
Surprisingly I love my Aero 15 3060. I love the screen. The 4K Oled is just so nice.
Next upgrade will be the Prometheus series when the 5000 Gpus come out.
1) Gpu can't be replaced, so choosing a good GPU is important
2) Cpu or processor which is the brain of the laptop is also important as some games requires more cpu than Gpu
3) Ram and ssd is also important -> 1 TB ( For ram we can upgrade, but cpu and GPU we can't upgrade so choose wisely)
4) Size of lap (14,15,16) easily portable, 17 & 18 tough
5) Screen
i) Brightness (300-500 nits)
ii) high refresh rate -> 144hz refresh rate
Iii) low response rate under 10ms
Iv) high color gamut -> 90% of srgb covering
v) Resolution - 1080p for small size 1440 for large size
V) good resolution
6) Battery - big laps contain big batteries and small laps contain small
7) check what were all the ports are available
8) check detailed reviews
Legend👌
build quality and charger size is important to me, thats why ill recommend lenovo and asus in gaming laptop
Love your content and also that aaaall of your t-shirts are from amazing metal bands
Best Tip - Never listen to sponsored ytuber .
Whether he is or not sponsored I'd say that his recommendations and data he shares are pretty reliable.

Adding just $10, you can get the Nitro 5 (ANV15-51-53DG) 4050 variant with i5 13420h, pretty much a refreshed Nitro 5 last year but newer gpu and cpu.
@@RussTeeRider We're in the same country. The one I said is available at PC Central but you did prefer to get from mall so it will be more expensive.
@@RussTeeRider the other dude is right. The 4050 variant of Nitro 5 is PHP 56,995 at PC Central but that's an online store.
ROFL, I have the same Dell Inspiron! It's still going too, got to give it credit for struggling on. As usual, nice video Jarrod!
Love your work, Jarrod !
Love these, they’ve really helped me out.
Please do a video on best laptops on every price range during Black Friday sales..Thank you!

I am just a little nervous as no one on UA-cam talks about it.😅
This is very helpful. I am in the market for a gaming laptop that can do video and photo editing too.
Do benchmark check before buying a gaming laptop and make sure you get ddr5 ram atleast . Dont go with ddr4 with better gpu
Thanks for your great videos 🙌🏻
I literally just ordered a gaming laptop RIGHT before you uploaded, thanks a lot Jarrod.
great timing!
I am about ready to just give up and wait a couple years to see if manufacturers get serious about this!
for a second i thought he was serious about rgb and fps , love your video
i use two laptops , portability and other serious works on macbook air, and another gaming laptop weight 2.5kg for gaming.
Yeah , sweetspot. 4080 / 4090 makes sense with a huge 4k screen plugged in. But in that cases, you can also aim for a desktop
No even 60 fps in several games, but 120+ in qhd+. It is cool
Holy cow, another Insomnium fan. That's rad af! \m/
🤘
Thank you for the very insightful video. I have plans on getting a replacement laptop for both work and play. Would be nice to have something which is lesser than 2kg, has decent entry level performance that won't break the bank account 😗.
Don't cheap out or you'll end up with a plastic junk rectangle. But also don't overspend on shtuff like razer or apple. And if you want max performance and have the spare space to set it up, do a desktop pc. Also from personal experience and my co workers, dont get the cheapest msi naff
First tip: Actually have money
Couldn't agree more.
Which laptops are best for content creation?
250 is barely visible even at max brightness
Thank you!
They killed 17 inchers. Won’t forgive it. Have nothing to replace my legion y540 for. Don’t want those 16 inchers.
get 18 inchers. They are just 17 inchers with the screen not wasting the space below.
Thanks jarrod!

Amazing. Very helpful video 💚💛💙
So yeah.... CPU and GPU will matter the most
120hz and great colors is more than enough for a great experience.
You should update the card recommendation in the end of your latest vid to this one!
Buying a gaming laptop plus a gaming console of your choice is the way to go
External monitor solves the screen problems for laptops. You still want a bigger screen anyway.
Both have the same price and share most of the specs, but one - S5 has better 2K screen and slower R5 CPU, while LOQ has better i7 processor and not very good FullHD screen. Which one do I choose? Better screen and colors or better CPU performance? Would really appreciate your advice
