A dad here who has taught 4 young drivers. NSW P plate rules suck. There was actually a recent court case where a P plate driver challenged using CarPlay for navigation. They lost the case and the license. The other thing that sucks is the 90k speed limit for L''s combined with the 120 hour requirement.. no problem with racking up a decent amount of experience but the 90k limit in practice results in the young driver getting monstered on every highway and freeway by every other driver pissed off at being held up. In many instances it creates dangerous situations like impatient drivers passing over double lines. 90k limit might work for a learner doing all their hours in a major city but for the rest of us where a lot of those hours will be clocked on single lane country highways it's such a horrible, intimidating and dangerous experience for our young drivers. Compare with ACT' more sensible learner rules where they can use a phone for navigation if in a mount and can travel at the posted limit, and that applies no matter where they are driving (rules of their home state apply I believe). Anyway, would love to talk more about this based on the experiences over the last 20 years.
P plater here. Absolutely 0 phone usage. Biggest load of bullshit. You are correct in saying that all that is allowed is a tomtom which are extremely old fashioned and now basically inaccurate. I drive a truck for work, makes life very very difficult not being able to see where im going. Ideally i'd need to use a phone cradle however its way to risky so im back to checking google maps. Remembering 2-3 street names. Driving. Pulling over and remembering another 2-3. Most p platers understand that this is a shit go and use Bluetooth and carplay etc anyway however i have seen police first hand go out of their way to book people for using it. (A loss of licence on the spot for a p1 driver and a hard hit for a p2 driver). All aspects of the p plate laws need a serious review as they're outdated including other topics like the points system and high power vehicle ban list. Not everyone is doing the wrong thing.
Yeah my understanding is you can use the screen in the car if it has an inbuilt sat-nav, or use a tom-tom/garmin gps etc - would an ipod be an exploit there where you could use an ipod plugged in to the AUX but not an iphone in exactly the same way even if both of them are in the glove-box and you're not touching it Probably, as marty suggested is the level of apparent distraction from having message tones go off through the speakers and being tempted to reach for the phone, but personally i don't see much of a difference between that and your phone on loud or vibrating in your pocket etc ...
Regarding phone usage for p platers, I think written law vs practical law is a real thing. I think it's written to be confusing on purpose so that police have the discretion to react to the individual to judge the situation. This, to me, is problematic in some ways but useful in others.

P platers can use a stand alone gps device with a screen as long as that is its only function (no texting no music no calling etc). Since I started driving my phone's always in the glovebox. Thats hung around now even when I'm on my full licence. Thank you boys you're freaking LEGENDS
I have done a performance mod or 2 to my Corolla and Soarer and found it to use less fuel. In case of the Corolla it's a 6spd gearbox conversion from a 5spd and en lightweight flywheel(from 9kg to 4,5kg) and went from 6.9L/100km to 5.9L in case of the Soarer it was larger wheels and a lightweight flywheel and triply clutch plate (11kg for the combination down to 6,5kg). That resulted in a drop from 11.5L/100km to 8.6L/100km. In case of the Corolla it was purposefully done to make it more economical as a daily. The Soarer was a nice side effect. Conclusion: Reject heavy single/dual mass flywheels. Return to light economical setups.

So chili in it makes sense (the cortez conquistadores people ate it like a goulash in the beginning...) some people like some pepper on their ice cream, so maybe you want to give that a try. Salt as you said is a taste enhancer and so you can put some in your cocoa drink and it might taste better. 😄

If youre allowed to navigate cd tracks/USB folders, or even built in satnav, i see no reason why its illegal to have a phone connected for carplay. You can block the notifications while driving to minimise distraction. I live in a town where commodores and falcons and lifted hiluxes have loud exhausts and blaring music, and rarely hear of people being busted for phone connectivity. Theyre more focused on rbt/mdt

I fully agree with you guys on Salted Caramel. It's doing my head in. I remember back in 2005-ish, in the UK, we had a big government campaign where they got the supermarkets together and told them to reduce salt content because of the rise in heart problems. They did it, and now stuff has much less salt in it. So now everyone goes crazy about putting salt back in food, but now it's in chocolate, and it's horrible.

Supercharged my daily with the expectation that it would going to probably run the fuel economy into the ground but I found that if i stay out of boost it really isn't any worse on consumption compared to when it was N/A, still averaging about 500km from ~70 litres with combined motorway and Sydney driving. Telling it to get on song though is a different story.
Mild mods don't really have much effect on much if you keep your foot out of it. When I swapped out the 305 for a 383 in my nova the gas mileage stayed the same (got about 3 mpg worse) just normal driving it. I added about 200 horsepower with the engine swap. I think the factory 2 barrel 1977 305 was rated at 170 HP. I did gain it back when I swapped the carb for fuel injection. My buddy's wife still daily drives it. AC still works, 3 owner 1977 nova rally (kinda rare package) in factory carousel red (hugger orange) I was 2nd owner of it. I wish I woulda kept it I just wanted a late 60s model with a stick shift. I like the looks of my 69 hunter green one with a 6 speed and ls1 better.
I drove from the middle of the UK, via Dover and the ferry across the channel... then onto the Nurburgring in Germany via France & Belgium. It was 437 miles... I then did about 100 miles around the Nordschlieffe before driving home a few days later. I could have done that entire trip on about half a tank in the new Corolla. Instead I was in a very modified Jspec Mazda MX6 with the V6 and filled the tank at least 4 times.
about licenses, here in New York, you take a written test for your permit... and then take a 5 hour course and then go for your road test. The road test is basically a spin around the block... can you parallel park? Can you not run into oncoming traffic, can you obey traffic signs. Takes maybe 15 minutes. That's it. There are driver education classes offered at some high schools that give a smidge lower insurance rating and allow you to drive after 9pm if you are under 18. That's it. :P Kind of nutty, no?
I actually modified my truck with performance stuff with full intentions of them also increasing my fuel economy. I went from ~10mpg mixed to ~14mpg mixed, up to 16mpg on the highway. So yes, people DO install performance mods with fuel economy in mind.
I'm in my mid 30s. I'm glad that, even though I've made a lot of financial mistakes, I've closed all my credit cards, and consolidated my debt into one place with a lower interest rate, and am paying it off monthly at the rate of the minimum payment plus the interest so it actually gets paid down. I wish i hadn't gotten into debt in the first place, but I'm glad that I have it under control.
24:10 I also believe this means that you can plug your phone into the vehicle's infotainment screen and use it for navigation and music, as this way its controlled by the vehicle (touch screen or steering wheel buttons). When I was on my P's I would place the phone in the little centre cubby with the screen turned away or locked for navigation through only listening to the directions as I too found the information about phones and P plate driving a bit ambiguous and up to the potential officers disgression if pulled over.
Victoria used to have similar ott rules about phones for Leaner motorcycle riders, but they thankfully finally realised it’s safer to let people use gps than be lost and stressed while learning to ride and now can use it for gps
Hi guys! Love your channels :) I think the rule you are talking about is that you can't use the phone screen to see a map of where you are going but can use GPS "voice" directions. It is reasonable that they allow in-car GPS and stand-alone GPS devices as their screens are much larger than a mobile phone. Also...loved the last quarter of your video. Great words of wisdom guys!

I absolutely do my modifications with fuel economy in mind, i've only opened up the intake and exhaust and left the rest of the engine stock. majority of the other stuff has been handling mods like coilovers tyres brakes sway bars and things of that nature
Chips ahoy are cookies, sweet biscuits in the UK. I'm not sure what y'all call them. They are made by Keebler. They come in loads of flavors, including Holliday flavors. They are usually dry and hard due to the preservatives to give them a long shelf life. We all had them as kids though.
I do make performance modifications for MPG… my 4runner has 33” tires, 4.88 gears and lockout hubs. I have a header and some vacuum lines deleted. I get 17-23mpg. The same rig with a v6 automatic gets 14mpg.
Vic P plater, my understanding of the Victorian rules was that Android Auto was okay but the phone in a holder on the dashboard was not okay. When android auto was running, you were not allowed to touch the screen while driving, only when stopped. That means when i drove my modern car, i could setup Android auto and start Waze to work out where I'm going, but in my classic car i needed to get the melways out and stick it on my lap while i tried to find a street name i recognised, because apparently that was "safer". Fortunately the bufoons that make the rules came to their senses in March last year and changed the rules to say you can use a phone for navigation if it's in a holder for maps or music, but you're still not allowed to touch it or use voice controls while driving.

My buddy's wife still daily drives it. AC still works, 3 owner 1977 nova rally (kinda rare package) in factory carousel red (hugger orange) I was 2nd owner of it. I wish I woulda kept it I just wanted a late 60s model with a stick shift. I like the looks of my 69 hunter green one with a 6 speed and ls1 better.

I drove from the middle of the UK, via Dover and the ferry across the channel... then onto the Nurburgring in Germany via France & Belgium. It was 437 miles...
I then did about 100 miles around the Nordschlieffe before driving home a few days later. I could have done that entire trip on about half a tank in the new Corolla. Instead I was in a very modified Jspec Mazda MX6 with the V6 and filled the tank at least 4 times.

about licenses, here in New York, you take a written test for your permit... and then take a 5 hour course and then go for your road test. The road test is basically a spin around the block... can you parallel park? Can you not run into oncoming traffic, can you obey traffic signs. Takes maybe 15 minutes. That's it. There are driver education classes offered at some high schools that give a smidge lower insurance rating and allow you to drive after 9pm if you are under 18. That's it. :P Kind of nutty, no?
I actually modified my truck with performance stuff with full intentions of them also increasing my fuel economy. I went from ~10mpg mixed to ~14mpg mixed, up to 16mpg on the highway. So yes, people DO install performance mods with fuel economy in mind.
I'm in my mid 30s. I'm glad that, even though I've made a lot of financial mistakes, I've closed all my credit cards, and consolidated my debt into one place with a lower interest rate, and am paying it off monthly at the rate of the minimum payment plus the interest so it actually gets paid down. I wish i hadn't gotten into debt in the first place, but I'm glad that I have it under control.

24:10 I also believe this means that you can plug your phone into the vehicle's infotainment screen and use it for navigation and music, as this way its controlled by the vehicle (touch screen or steering wheel buttons).
When I was on my P's I would place the phone in the little centre cubby with the screen turned away or locked for navigation through only listening to the directions as I too found the information about phones and P plate driving a bit ambiguous and up to the potential officers disgression if pulled over.
Victoria used to have similar ott rules about phones for Leaner motorcycle riders, but they thankfully finally realised it’s safer to let people use gps than be lost and stressed while learning to ride and now can use it for gps
Hi guys! Love your channels :) I think the rule you are talking about is that you can't use the phone screen to see a map of where you are going but can use GPS "voice" directions. It is reasonable that they allow in-car GPS and stand-alone GPS devices as their screens are much larger than a mobile phone. Also...loved the last quarter of your video. Great words of wisdom guys!

Chilli + chocolate is because the sweet is supposed to cancel out the spicy of the chilli so you get the flavour.

Don’t know if you guys mind having a drink, but Wild turkey American Honey Sting (honey liqueur that has essence of ghost peppers in it) with Lime soda 🤌👌 I like to call it the Acid Vat, it looks like your typical acid you’ll see in cartoons, you get your lime taste followed by the chilli heat coming through at the end

I absolutely do my modifications with fuel economy in mind, i've only opened up the intake and exhaust and left the rest of the engine stock. majority of the other stuff has been handling mods like coilovers tyres brakes sway bars and things of that nature

Chips ahoy are cookies, sweet biscuits in the UK. I'm not sure what y'all call them. They are made by Keebler. They come in loads of flavors, including Holliday flavors. They are usually dry and hard due to the preservatives to give them a long shelf life. We all had them as kids though.
I do make performance modifications for MPG… my 4runner has 33” tires, 4.88 gears and lockout hubs. I have a header and some vacuum lines deleted. I get 17-23mpg. The same rig with a v6 automatic gets 14mpg.

Vic P plater, my understanding of the Victorian rules was that Android Auto was okay but the phone in a holder on the dashboard was not okay. When android auto was running, you were not allowed to touch the screen while driving, only when stopped.
That means when i drove my modern car, i could setup Android auto and start Waze to work out where I'm going, but in my classic car i needed to get the melways out and stick it on my lap while i tried to find a street name i recognised, because apparently that was "safer".
Fortunately the bufoons that make the rules came to their senses in March last year and changed the rules to say you can use a phone for navigation if it's in a holder for maps or music, but you're still not allowed to touch it or use voice controls while driving.
