Mine has the seats in the back still! 1985 Brat with over 300k miles. odometer stopped working at 295k miles over 10 years ago. Thanks for restoring this one and ultimately making mine worth more!!

This is a really cool project for y'all to have taken for a good cause. I know that I would be really pumped to rock this thing daily. I haven't seen a Subaru Brat on the road since I was a kid and I'm 40 now.

I hope whoever gets it puts it to use and enjoys the hell out of it. It would be sad if it ends up in a showroom never being used (The exact opposite of the concept you planned the build around).
An amusing aside. By fluke I almost picked up a Ford Ranchero for $3000 right before you started posting the videos. Ended up getting an old Jeep Pickup instead (Kind of regretting it). But, not quite as funny as you guys winding up with both a white 280Z and an FB, like my friend and I.
That was awesome. Sat here and watched the entire thing, front to back. I don't think we ever had as many Brumbys/Brats in the US as you guys down there, but in my late 40s, I still have fond memories of riding in the jump seats of my friend's dad's in the early 80s. I still remember the excitement of tearing through the Appalachian hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and bouncing through the culm dumps of the old Anthracite wastelands, hanging on to the grab handles for dear life. He used to take us fishing and hiking, in places where only the 4x4s would go. I can still hear that old Subaru engine burbling down the road, with that metallic sound, much like a VW. It was gutless by today's standards, but I didn't know that, and that sound was one you'd never forget. My dad actually drove a Subaru during that same period. I think it was a 75 or 76 DL or something. He used to like driving that thing like a rally car through the coal dumps too. I remember catching air more than once. It was almost like a different world back then. Good memories...the late 70s, early 80s.
Imagine being a long forgotten about Car/Ute and then one day you see Marty and Moog pull up for a look......

As someone who just spent the last 5 years restoring a 1978 El Camino ... it's incredible how similar these vehicles are, though so different. Awesome build guys! Long live the Ute!

@@akshonclip malaise was really just the detuned engines and the failing (but whale-saving) transmissions of that time. Both of these are corrected to whatever you want in restoration.
Personally, I had a friend who "fixed up" a 1972 El back in the 90s. It was huge compared to this. I later had another friend who restored a late 50s Ranchero. Both are based on the cars of their time, and much larger. From time to time this Brumby reminded me of the VW Rabbit Pickups that famously get almost 50 MPG. Most of them got run absolutely to death, and stayed worthless the whole time.
But in my LIFE have never seen a Brat (Brumby US vers.) since they were new. They were the coolest things that captured all the children's imaginations. We actually talked about them. Then they were gone, and I thought maybe I had imagined the seats in the bed, with people telling me that never happened. I never realized this was a car-related CUV type thing 25-40 years ahead of its time.

We used to have an 1800 wagon. It was such a beast.
I learnt to drive in it when I was 12 years old with my dad. You could just put it in low range and dump the clutch and it would go, no stalling.
We used to collect bush rock and logs, and even used to haul easily 2T logs dragging on the ground with a 6T straight synthetic sling choked. We broke a few driveshafts but we made it back home in front wheel drive.
We welded the rear diff.
We made a bull bar ourselves and used to smash down trees 150mm in diameter. We used to abuse the crap out of it.
It was purchased from a wrecker for $500, forklift tines straight through the windows, and dropped onto the car trailer.
We never changed the oil or filter.
We had a leaking radiator, but just filled up with water every time we used it, over heated it every single time we used it, it was driven hard and hot all the time.
It never let us down.
The carburettor was a bit tricky and sometimes needed extra choke to run the engine, but that was ok.
It was the greatest car to learn on.
Would always start straight away, and never ever let us down.
Proper knowledge and usage in your explanation, I too had a brumby 2.0 L ,5spd which I know is a rare combination that was built, often for extremely fast take off and top speed I'd challenge friends and others at traffic lights to a drag,
I'd drive it like a 10speed rpm max with slight intervals between shifts using the high/low gearbox shifter transitioning up through gear sequencially always leaving the 4x4 shift lever engaged.
I can't tell you how many times I completely blew away anyone in a drag both on bitumen and on dirt 😂
Pretty much every single time cars that were built to race would lose when driven as a 10speed dropping in and out of high/low up/down shifting fast keeping torque peaked 😂
A real sleeper that so many shook their heads at either in disbelief or awe of it's capabilities when executing it's no so much engine but applying what it had in the 10speed configuration no allowing engine to go under max torque 😂
I'm smiling and laughing now what I used to do with it😂😂😂
Flat deck chassis bottom I'd hit mud flats and skate across them whereas heavier bigger 4x4"s would big down and sunk trenching themselves in😂
They're are very good mechanically proper created car all in all of which their potential was seldom known.
Aesthetically they're are bit of a pig but other than that they're a very good reliable transport workhorse both on and off-road and abused they take a beating like no other set of wheels I've had the pleasure to play with and thoroughly enjoyed every moment!
Dudes, only new car I ever bought, 1986. It stomped through Chicago snow then moved to Colorado in 1988. The Sub stormed around on Pikes Peak where I lived, weekend ski trips around the state. Lock them out in high or scale cliffs in low. It never fucked me once, never left me stranded. It's only repair was an oil pump at 110,000 miles, held pressure And got me home. Stick a set of snow tires on it and go try to get stuck. I have owned full size 4x4 everythings but miss my Boo.

I had a 92 Brumby with 2" lift blocks and Peugot rims. The uncommon stud pattern led me to the Peugot rims, pretty sure they were 15" and I put muddies on them. At one point, I even bought a donor Outback to do a transplant. Sadly, it never happened. I sold the Brumby eventually, the one that got away. Still have the 1983 Rx7 though. Absolutely loved seeing this build and seeing another car I owned looked after properly. Was on the mailing list to buy a ticket and have one. Amazing work guys. Cheers.
Over the years I have watched literally hundreds of car build videos, never and I mean never have I seen a build that is exactly as I would love to see it done if it was mine, you haven't tried to make it something it's not and just improved what it was to a new level, I loved my brumby when I had it and put so much time and love into it before it was stolen and crashed to never return, thankyou for doing a build that made my heart skip a beat in appreciation, I tip my hat to you all
This resto is amazing. Something old cars have that new cars are missing is character and charm. You've done this ute justice amd even as a Brit watching this, love how its turned out.
In the US, the Subaru Brat STILL has a solid cult like following. I had two of these and absolutely loved them both one was my beater that would never die, lol, and the other I brought back to perfectly mint condition the way you have done here. The only reason I sold that thing was I was offered literally double what I had into it. That was 20 years ago and the guy that bought it lives less than 10 miles away and he still has it. Unbelievably being here in New England it’s STILL in beautiful original condition. Great vehicles. 👍🏻😎👍🏻
"you're repairing something rather than sticking it in the bin" I love this quote because nearly every vehicle I've had started out neglected in someone's yard or abandoned with one foot in the grave. I love bringing cars back to roadworthy condition and enjoying them again.
As an American who grew up in the 70s and 80s, I remember seeing Subaru "Brats" everywhere. I never knew anyone who had one, but they just looked cool! My dad had a "Ute" (1973 Chevrolet El Camino) when I was little, so I always understood the flexibility of a ute. I haven't seen a Brat anywhere near this condition in DECADES!
I restored/rebuilt a 1980 4 headlight BRAT ten years ago. Some of the parts cost more than the BRAT. I loved every bit of it and ended up selling it before I painted it. I regret it from time to time but projects come and go. This was a great project to watch and it made me smile the whole time. Great job guys!
Sometimes I wish there were timestamps when the clips were recorded.
Then again I'm glad there isn't to keep the magic alive and make me think these cars were fixed up in a chill weekend.
You guys have been around for so long and been in my brain ever since I saw your videos on how to turbo a Mazda, I just bought my (2nd gen) MINI back then and was looking into how to do things myself. Safe to say I've done some heavy mods myself like designing and 3D printing my own shift knob and putting my car to shady tuners for everything else. Still you guys will have a special place in my brain til the end of my days.
A friend of mine has an early 2000s Chevy pickup lifted and modded. When he tore it down, before he started swapping parts he cleaned and detailed the undercarriage and all the exposed metal parts are acid etched, blued, ceracoated, bronzed or some combination of any of those. It was a lot of work and he thinks he has about $2500 in metal finishes but it looks so unique it’s mind blowing. The whole frame is boxed and ceracoated a bronze color. All the nuts and bolts are blued like a rifle barrel.
Well there goes almost 2 hours! Thanks mcm love these type of complete videos, even though I’ve seen them all it feels more complete. I think it’s time to release these into a blu ray box set 👍🏼

Love the feature length movie format. It just works for me. Also, restoring "Iawlwayswantedoneofthose" cars is such a great idea. It's hard not to appreciate the old stuff these days.

As an old guy, I remember when the BRAT was first introduced in USA. A couple of interesting notes:
- The vehicle was originally developed for the North American market, and the NA model came with two rear-facing seats in the bed, classifying it as a passenger car. The brackets were welded in so the seats couldn't be easily removed, to justify the idea that the seats were actually meant to be used. Everyone knew it was just an end run around the 25% import tax on light trucks (wink, nudge).
- The BRAT was semi-successful in America, selling nearly 100k units in nine years. Enthusiasm was much better in Australia, where production continued another seven years.
- In USA, it was replaced by the larger Baja, which was not very popular, and production was cut short after a few years and 30k units.
i had an absolute blast in a brat in 1980 ..did some long road trips in the back seats...what an awwsum little backwood 4 wheeler ..10 bucks in gas for the week..

that's another point missing in this video. would have been VERY satisfying if they hadn't just showed up, let him comment like he had followed all the videos, and then skipped on to something else. There are a few more of note, like not really getting to see the finished interior. Dialog is great throughout, good amount of detail and nice introductions, just incomplete video of the finished work. Likewise the follow-up with Bill, the setting-up with Subaru, and explaining where the car is going and why. Its implied at least once that "Its going back to [Subaru]".
in 1973 I bought my first Subaru, a FF1,for $1973 NEW, Loved that car, eventually my brothers, all bought Subaru's and now my son has a few of them so I can say we love them

i was young in the 80s, and saw these little "brats" running around, and always thought they were super cool. today, 40+ years of age, i own something similar, the VW rabbit cabby pickup. simple, reliable, cheap, and still a ute. this is one of the best things you guys have done, as far as just "details". beautiful little truck. cant wait to see that ridiculous coupe STI up next on the build list...

I had an earlier BRAT with the round headlights and the 4WD GL wagon version of their project. Helluva flashback when I saw the interior and they popped the hood.
Just wish they restored the good one since it was so complete and did their mod-job on the spare.
But that's me.🤷♂️

These Brumby Utes are bullet proof workhorses that have never been realised for their true reliability and potential from the general public, with an exception of those of us that have truely literally UTILISED them in rural settings.
Today they are GOLD on WHEELS 💪.
This has to be the best car video I have ever seen..I lived in Perth for15 years worked in the mining Business as a Mechanic..The guys I worked with where the best mechanics I have come across,.Nothing was ever thrown away their was always a small family business in Perth that would repair and fabricate anything and always cheaper to buy than from a dealership,,The skill level of these guys reminds of those days..Keep up the good work and keep those vid,s flowing.
I will never forget the wonderful BRAT. Way back in highschool, a buddy had one of these. Remember the backwards-facing jump seats in the bed? On his car, the seats were not bolted to the body. So a favorite passtime of his was to take unsuspecting friends for a hell ride over “Hell Hill”- a local dirt road with a sharp crest that you could catch air on with your car. Rear passengers would “free fall” as he would call it. BRAT jumps, BRAT lands, passengers still flying, blood-curdling screams to make up for the VW Beetle engine noise!
I bought a red one brand new in 1978. It came with the rear facing jump seats, roll bar, push bar, fiberglass topper, and white wagon wheels. I really wish I still had it.

My first Subaru was a 1974 GL 1.4L three door, next a 2.2L 1992 Liberty wagon, a 2002 2.5L Subaru RX Liberty sedan and now a 2009 2L Impreza Hatch. I've enjoyed them all. I'm not really a car geek, but my inventory of other owned vehicles includes a 1961 VW Beetle, 1974 Mazda RX4 and 1981 RX7 series II, 1992 Saab 9000 Turbo as well as 5 Ducati motorcycles and 2 BMW adventure bikes.

I remember my grandpa had a Brat here in upstate new york but unfortunately the winters and road salt took their toll. Great video and so cool to see the resto/mod community Down Under!!
Here from the states, I love the Brat's and GL wagons. That being said, Subaru are called the Lego's of vehicles. Amazing how many parts are shared or can be swapped to make things work and still keep it Subaru.

I remember when I was younger, Larry Emder was giving away Subaru Liberty sedans and wagons on “The Main Event” game show.
That was in the early 90’s, I think that was the first time I’d ever heard of Subaru.
Loving this video. I first came across you guys some years back as I own two Nissan 200sx(240) over here in the UK. I run a workshop here and as you said, restoring a car takes a lot of time and effort but it's all worth it in the end. I'm loving the color you went with for this Brumby. Keep up the good work guys.

Awesome build, guys!! Loved seeing that SVX at the end. My Grandfather gifted me a 1992 SVX as my first car, with the caveat that I needed to drive it home to Colorado from California (a road trip just over 1700kM). I miss that car so much, so whenever I see one in the wild, it makes me smile. Old Subarus are really something special. Keep up the great work!

A great project, love the whole restomod vibe, love Brats/Brumbys, love that this plucky little car now has a long life ahead of it.
Be careful of theives. My nephew inherited dads brumby and when he moved to town to attend Uni it was stolen(approx 2021). Being so rare it was found quickly a few streets away and only small damage. He has parked it in storage for now, until he can get a house with off street parking.
There aren't many UA-camrs that can post a 2hr long video and have my 100% undivided attention. Been a follower for many years and you guys always impress. You guys are remind me of my little brother and I just hangin out doin car things. ♥️
This is really cool. Reviving an old Subaru Brat with a modern EJ20 drivetrain, with a lifted suspension, and a full new lease on life. Someone will be REALLY proud to rock this vehicle.
@1:34:00 onwards on call ," Cooked strarter motor" , is tight no bed in of tolerances, and usually cause is lack of build lubrication for a "run in" or too much publication causing excessive compression.
The starter motor may also be an issue as it lagged up , although first point of call in this scenario is battery output amperage under load.
Kudo's for video footage for audience to observe although the explanation situation has many causations in effect especially if an engine has been opened up and/or revitalised or modified.

I doubt anyone could find two Brats in better condition, here in the U.S.. The bodies look to be in great shape. If Subaru made this today I think it would sell like crazy.

As far as I could tell, there wasn't a limit to how many tickets you could purchase so everybody's chances would be super low except for a few loaded dudes who don't need the car. I got the notification email instantly but I wasn't going to enter with such uneven playing fields.

Loved this. One of the guys who worked at my local garage had a Brat here in Scotland. It dropped a cylinder. His brother suggested he see how long it would run and (pre emission checks for the MOT) it ran for 20,000 miles on three pots alone. Legendary vehicles though they rusted like nails!

Mates I’m blown away by this lifted, modified, rejuvenated Brat/ Brumby. The color is spectacular. I Blew apart a friend’s 1989 Nissan SR5 4x4 in my basement garage. This was an experience like no other.
I have to admit I was hoping to see the spare Brumby go flying off a massive jump at the end! but good job none the less! she turned out great!
IV done 5 full restorations and the 85 rx is the most fun but as far as saving the rare Subaru I had to do a ton of rust repair and it’s still ongoing. It’s always a lot of work. That’s why I went turbo right from the start but once you master the wiring harness. Do your self a favor and label all the key splice points so it makes it easy to do the next swap to a newer motor.

I do all of my own servicing, filters, oil, breaks. I passed all of my mots except one where I needed new wipers. That wasn't a problem, I just needed to come back the next day to my workplace. Haha - I worked for the council in south Gloucestershire and i took my car to the council MOT station which didn't do work which is really advantageous as they'd normally chuck a load of false inspection things "they need to fix". Where I am now there's no checks for anything as long as it's not a commercial vehicle. All you need is brakes and tyres, you're good even if it's been strapped together with bungee cords and lagging straps...

This is my favorite build so far. Maybe because this car dates back to my childhood... but even when I was a kid, I loved these things. Brats here in the US... and yea... I did get a ride in the jump seat. 🙂

ProTip:
When starting anything that's been sitting for that long, it's advisable to use chain saw premix you can buy at any parts store instead of starter fluid spray. The reason for this is because the 2-stroke oil in the premix will serve as a very badly needed upper cylinder lubricant after sitting for so long. The best way to apply it is to simply fill a plastic squeezable condiment bottle with premix to give you better control when you fill the carb bowl prior to starting it for the first time, and you can also keep it running for a brief period of time that way in order to warm the engine oil up enough to be able to change it properly, you want all the gunk that's built up from sitting over 10 years in the system down in the oil pan when you drain it.
Also, after sitting unstarted for 10 years it's never a good idea to use the starter right away, you first want to make sure the engine will turn over at least one full revolution by hand, or you risk chewing up the flywheel and starter drive in the event that the engine is locked up.
