Can’t thank you enough for these videos. I’m in the middle of my first one with a picture of Canadian goose I purchased off wildlife reference photos. I’m using Arcylic with this which made me nervous because I never used Acrylic but charcole was a passion of mine as a kid. It is coming out really cool and it has been so much fun. It is so different from what I’m use to doing. I keep telling myself I won’t grow unless I step outside the box and try new things. Thanks for giving to the art community you will be blessed for your teachings I’m sure. Your eye for detail and your proportions are so accurate. You are truly an accomplished artist. God bless 😊
I can’t even describe how grateful I am for this videos that you’ve started to make. Please, don’t stop! It gives me not only very useful tips, but also lots of inspiration and pleasure to watch. As always your work is incredible!:)
Whenever you get out the acetone you build up so much suspense, it's always my favorite part. Keep up the amazing work, you're a very inspiring artist.
Thank you very much for lots of great information, one day I will have more time to paint again, right now got to work but watching your painting is giving me so much joy. You're very talented.
Hello Joel, congratulations for your art! I would like to know if you put an acrylique coat on your canvas before working or you work directly on the canvas? Thank you! 😊
I've done both. This one had no prep in addition to the manufacturer's primer. Recently I've been using gesso first. It creates a bit of a different outcome, but both work. Thanks!
Joel, thank you for these videos. I have a quick question about using white acrylic versus white charcoal on highlights. I don’t find either satisfactory. Fixative seems to gray the charcoal whites defeating their purpose, and the acrylic white is “blueish” to my eye compared to the white of the canvas and makes the highlights looks like they should be in shadow. Do you have any advice for me? I use Liquitex Basics for the white acrylic and General’s charcoal white pencil. Thanks for any help! ~Rhonda
I know what you're saying. I have started using acrylic only for the highlights and it does have a cooler tone to it. I've found that when I varnish the work, the cool tone dissipates and it gives it more of a consistent overall feel. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip-that’s good to know about the varnish. I might also try tinting the white with a bit of unbleached titanium or other color to warm it up a bit. Keep up the great work!!
@@nestingbirdcreations Hi. Not sure if you've figured out how to correct the color shift (bluing) that you get from your white but a trick I've learned long ago is to add a little bit of orange to the white. Just a little bit at a time until it neutralizes the blue tone. It won't look pure white but it also won't look cool or warm either (if done right) I've only used this method with airbrush acrylics so I'm not sure how exactly it'll work for this application. I'd be interested to hear how it works for you, should you try it.
I want to add that I love your work and I’m very grateful for your channel I have always wanted to use charcoal Lynn other mediums on canvas and was afraid to and didn’t understand it Anyway your work is beautiful
Very cool! I'll have to try using a sponge. Does that also work on paper? I've never used charcoal on canvas before. You make erasing with a kneaded eraser look easy. I can't seem to get down to white with a kneaded eraser. I'm wondering if it's the type of charcoal you are using or the canvas. Is it vine charcoal?
You've probably been asked this numerous times, but is there a particular reason you spray it with acetone? Is it just a signature style sort of reason? I love your work and I'm very thankful for your videos.
Hello, I'm French and don't understand all of your explanations..but a big thank you for your video...what you do is impressive...For the sponge, is it a normal sponge? is it just wet or dry? thanks again..
Once I put the acetone in my plastic spray bottle. I left the left over in the bottle for a while (meaning days and weeks) until I decided to use again. I realized that my bottle got shrunk! Is it normal?
Nothing special on the sponge. It's just one that came with a set of brushes I purchased. I buy pre primed and stretched canvases from Milo art supply. I don't do any additional prep to them. Just open them up and start drawing. Thanks!
Wow sir. Which type of charcoal have u used? Would you please like to tell me its name of the brand and is it a willow charcoal or a compressed one? Sir it looks fantastic and stunning artwork 😍😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏
Hi Joel (I'm in Cape Town), First - beautiful work !!!! 2nd - acetone is a carcinogenic fluid !!!! do your spraying in a force - ventilated area!!! You are frying your brain bro
okay, what kind of charcoal is this that it just smears and blends perfectly like wet ink. I'm furious over the last few days trying to do charcoal and it doesn't blend or smear worth crap.

One of the amazing thing I have seen till date.

Thank you!
I love Charcoal. I want to eventually have one done of my Newfoundland.
This made me remember a black lab I’ve had who passed away 6 years ago. She was sweet and funny. Beautiful work!
So helpful. Saves all the glass, frame etc. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
Drawing with charcoal on canvas. You make beautiful animals.
Thank you very much for lots of great information, one day I will have more time to paint again, right now got to work but watching your painting is giving me so much joy. You're very talented.
This process is absolutely awesome, the videos are presented so professionally! I’m trying my first one !
Love the dog!!
Beautiful as always! I can't thank you enough for sharing your technique, love your work and I always look forward to your videos!
Sir, I am regularly watching your videos... All of very interesting... And you are a ideological artist..salute yo🙏sir...
We have a black Labrador puppy - Wonderful to watch 👊
Wow!!
Beautiful work! Thanks a lot for your videos 😊
Very nice! Thanks for making the video. This is a technique I would like to try!
I love how you don’t speed up the video to show the process!! I learned a lot. Thanks!

Just aswome 👌👌👌💖💖
you are amazing !
Do you add extra primer /gesso to your canvases before you start these drawings? great work btw.
No. I buy the canvases stretched and pre primed, but I don't do any additional prep. Thanks!

@@jenniferhunt3778 Thanks for the tip, Jennifer. I haven’t much of this kind of work lately, but if I do I will give your tip a try. Thanks!

Vine charcoal and charcoal powder. I imagine the sponge could have a similar effect on paper, though I haven't tried it. Thanks!
You've probably been asked this numerous times, but is there a particular reason you spray it with acetone? Is it just a signature style sort of reason? I love your work and I'm very thankful for your videos.
I mainly spray it for the effect, but it also helps seal the layer of charcoal to the canvas. Thanks!
So much patience involved but what an amazing result 👊👌
I believe that a coat of liquetex clear gesso gives a good tooth to the canvas and also on watercolour paper.
Very informative videos..Can I ask you the name of the fixative you use which allows to lay down another layer over it?
I use Krylon workable fixative between layers. Thanks!
@@JoelPilcherArt thank you so much
Do you ever use compress charcoal? I’m always scared to use it because it’s hard erase.
Not on canvas. The softer vine and powder is more workable.
Do you have to prime the canvas with anything before you use charcoal on it?
I buy the canvases stretched and pre primed. I don't do any additional prep to them.
Hello, I'm French and don't understand all of your explanations..but a big thank you for your video...what you do is impressive...For the sponge, is it a normal sponge? is it just wet or dry? thanks again..
Thank you! Yes, a normal sponge and I use it dry. It came with a set of paint brushes I bought online.
Once I put the acetone in my plastic spray bottle. I left the left over in the bottle for a while (meaning days and weeks) until I decided to use again. I realized that my bottle got shrunk! Is it normal?
I haven't had that happen. I just use the acetone found at Walmart sold as nail polish remover. It comes in a plastic bottle.
This is great. I love it. I would like to know how long it took you to complete this piece.
Thank you! I don't track my time, but an average size charcoal piece can take anywhere from a couple days to about a week or so.
really nice work. why use acetone? doesn't the fixative seal it?
The acetone seems to help blend the charcoal a bit and I like the effect it leaves. Thanks!
Is the acetone completely necessary to use and does it have a strong smell?
Hey is there a particular type of sponge you use? And a particular style of canvas?
Nothing special on the sponge. It's just one that came with a set of brushes I purchased. I buy pre primed and stretched canvases from Milo art supply. I don't do any additional prep to them. Just open them up and start drawing. Thanks!
Wow sir. Which type of charcoal have u used? Would you please like to tell me its name of the brand and is it a willow charcoal or a compressed one? Sir it looks fantastic and stunning artwork 😍😍😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏
I use Coates powder charcoal and Marie's vine charcoal. Thanks!
Why do you have to spray it with acetone that does the acetone break up the charcoal and affect the drawing negatively?
I just like the effect it has. I also feel that it helps blend and seal the charcoal to the canvas.
Fantastic Joel. Love your work, What kind of fixative are you using? Thank you
Krylon workable fixative. Thanks!
Very Nice quality
Where did you get your canvas from? Is it primed?
I buy the canvas from Milo Art Supply. They come stretched and pre primed, but I don't do any additional prep.
I have never drawn on canvas before. Can you do the same method in paper ????
The effect will be a bit different, but yes, it will work. Thanks!
Hi Joel (I'm in Cape Town), First - beautiful work !!!! 2nd - acetone is a carcinogenic fluid !!!! do your spraying in a force - ventilated area!!! You are frying your brain bro
Can we used graphite drawing on canvas
Not sure. Never tried. It could work, though may not be as dark.
Do you prepare the canvas first?
Thank you for sharing. Just a helpful tip. Your website needs a hyperlink and I'm sure you will get more traffic to your site.
Sir, what's the liquid you use to spray
It's acetone (nail polish remover).
i found a canvas with a painting i didnt like so i painted over it with white. Can your technique be used on a painted canvas?
Not sure, but I recently started coating my canvas with gesso before drawing with charcoal and it works great.
Do you gesso your canvas first?
No, I buy my canvases stretched and pre primed. I don't do any additional prep.
can I replace acetone with alcohol?
Maybe, never tried it.
okay, what kind of charcoal is this that it just smears and blends perfectly like wet ink. I'm furious over the last few days trying to do charcoal and it doesn't blend or smear worth crap.
I use Coate's charcoal powder and Marie's vine charcoal. Both are very soft and workable. Thanks!
No entiendo el inglés podrías explicar lo del líquido que le echas que contiene gracias
Que precio tiene ese perro
Sir the Marie vine charcoal that you use is hard, medium or soft one?
