- This how I use both charcoal and acrylic paint on the same piece. I'm still occasionally trying new things and that makes the creation process fun and exciting. Also sometimes a little nerve wracking. Check it out and I hope you enjoy watching. Thanks!

You ate a really good man for taking your time to make such content for us. May the work of your hands be blessed Sir!
Just mind blowing! Do you find an advantage for using white paint over white charcoal?
Yes, I've tried white charcoal and it works okay, but the white paint is much more opaque and I actually really like the texture and feel that it adds to the piece. Thanks!
What brand of powdered charcoal are you using? I have some that is not working for me. I can't get the effects when I spray it with acetone. Also do you use a drying retardant in your paint?
I'm currently using Coates charcoal powder. Previously I used General's. Both have been great. No drying retardant in the paint. Thanks!
@@JoelPilcherArt Thanks for your reply. It's so dry here in Colorado that the acrylic paint drys as soon as I get it brushed on the canvas. I love watching your videos and your talent. I recently picked up drawing again after decades of not doing any. I loved drawing with charcoals as a kid. My folks got me a Jon Gnagy charcoal set and I couldn't wait to get home from school and draw. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
That’s one majestic looking bull there, Joel. I’m really liking your mixed medium look you’ve developed/continue to develop with your work. An artist wants to distinguish their work from others, obviously, and your style is one of the most unique. I’m a huge fan of your color palate with the earth tones, and also with the subjects you choose. Love the wildlife, especially the wolves and bison. To be honest, if I were a wealthy man I’d purchase every one of your original pieces before they were dry! But for now, please continue with these videos. It’s a pleasure to watch you create. You can tell how good someone is at their craft by how easy they make it look. It’s almost hypnotic! Lol. Thanks, Joel. Troy
Thanks Troy! I really appreciate your support and encouragement.
Hi Joel, Im a newbie here! Really enjoyed this. Can you tell me why you used acetone in the spray and not just water? And do you mix water with the acetone?
Thanks Brooke! I've tried water and it doesn't seem to have the same effect. Also, the acetone evaporates very quickly so it can be better controlled and it's less messy. I don't mix the acetone with water. Check out one of my recent videos where I describe the process in detail if you'd like more insight. Thanks!
Using liquid charcoal do you have to let it dry before eraseing into it. That is really great work.
It's dry vine charcoal and charcoal powder. This one does have a liquid acrylic wash as well. Thanks!
my eraser does not erase that much. i think its because of my canvas
I have found that some canvas brands erase better than others, I buy my canvases from Milo Art Supplies. Might be worth a try.
Awesome work! I wonder if you've ever tackled a black animal and how you worked that out witht hr highlights, lightsource and how you'd create depth with that.
I have, and for darker subjects I leave the background lighter for contrast. Thanks!
Awesome! I want to try experimenting with acrylic and charcoal now!
Hey Joel, quick question, why use acetone? just wondering with acrylic being water based, would water create the same effect? Also, if acetone is better how would mineral spirits effect it? I also think i heard you say acetone helps to set the charcoal, can you expound on that? Thanks for the great video. FULL Tutorial Please!
I've tried water and the advantage I see with acetone is that it evaporates very quickly which gives me more control over the results. Water just kind of made a mess. I'm not sure what the reaction is, but when the acetone dries it helps set the charcoal almost like a first coat of fixative. Thanks!
Spraying acetone with no mask. You crazy! 😮
Excellent work
You are a great artist. But mind your health use a lot of ventilation. Don’t breath that stuff. Best wishes
Since I am a beginner with charcoal, do you suggest me to start the drawing with a pencil before using the hard charcoal stick? Thanks in advance!
Check out some of my newer videos. I have recently switched up my process a bit and started sketching each piece with a charcoal pencil before using vine and powder charcoal. It has worked great. Thanks!
I love watching the process. Are you using acrylic inks or paint?
Acrylic paint on this one. Thanks!
Wow, you are an amazing artist! I really enjoy your talent and passionate, kind presence. You are inspiring me to add a new twist to my drawings. Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your process. I love charcoal and acrylic. I can’t wait to try charcoal on canvas and maybe mix in some acrylics too!!! Your work is truly beautiful
Joel, I absolutely love your work! And I so appreciate your sharing exactly how you accomplished this beautiful piece. Years ago I started my art painting in acrylic and then moved to oil. I love how you have used acrylic to pull out the highlights in a way white charcoal would not. Thank you for this! I'm definitely going to try this. You are a gem and your videos are great!
Hey Joel, I absolutely love this! Have you considered doing a full length tutorial video with all the steps and selling it? I for one would purchase it.
I might have to try that sometime. Thanks!
Dope 🙏🏾🙏🏾💙 thanks for this..this is going to really elevate my charcoal art..
And you are nice to look at..thanks for that too 😇
What he's not telling you is how the charcoal blends on to the acrylic because the charcoal doesn't adhere to the acrylic "at all" especially in really dark areas.
Maybe he didn't mention it but between the lines I can presume he would use workable fixative first. It creates rougher finish on top of it and you can add charcoal on that pretty easy, i guess
I have been trying to figure out this sort of process for myself since I started painting last year! I haven’t spent much time on it because it’s on odd mixture, so I’ve mostly just painted freely without the sketching I want to do. Thank you for demonstrating this, it’s been hard to find something like it. Do you have a preferred workable fixative?
I use Krylon and it's always worked great. Thanks!
I've never seen these 2 combined before, so interesting and it looks amazing!
May i ask what colour used for the background...maybe burnt umber.......? Another very informative video and the bison looks fabulous.
For this one it was a mixture of raw umber, burnt umber and a bit of warm gray. Thank you!
Can it be done on a colorful subject like flowers , people , etc...
The mixed charcoal and acrylic technique ??
Possibly, though I use it for a more subdued/desaturated or tonal look. Not sure how something really colorful would come out.
Which varnish u use acrylics varnish ?
I used to use Golden satin varnish for acrylics, but can't find it in stock anymore. So I've started using Liquitex satin varnish. Also for acrylics.
that's amazing. love your technique!!
That was fascinating and absolutely brilliant! I had this question over using charcoal with acrylic (I'd tried once and it just ran - so great to know to use fixative!) I now feel I can have another try and experiment more. Thank you!
Hola. Por favor me dices que líquido aplicas con la botella morada?
It's acetone (nail polish remover) for effect and to help seal the charcoal.
Awesome work Joel. I'm so inspired now. I am experimenting with acrylics just now and stumbled upon your video. I just need to find what I want to paint now, I'm dying to try this technique. Thank you. x
Wow! What a masterpiece! I love it so much! Thank you for sharing your process, the results are so stunning! I am in love with your art. I will certainly give a try at charcoal on a canvas!
Great work. I appreciate learning about the method.
really liked the way charcoal and acrylic mixed together, gonna try it myself :D
Wow!! Amazing work!!! thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it
Beautiful piece and process! Thanks for sharing.
I love watching all these videos. I’ve wanted to experiment on canvas but not sure about the fixative process or varnishing.
Is your canvas a smooth surface canvas like you may use for a portrait ?
It's a basic canvas texture. I buy them pre primed and stretched and don't do any other prep work to them.
Would you please publish your coming workshops? I would hope you’d consider coming to OKC when 1st Nations has their art festival or Cowboy Hall of Fame for a workshop.
Absolutely amazing man! Love that combination of medium!
Thanks for posting all these videos and explaining your steps along the way. It has helped me learn processes quicker in making my own pieces. I think I've watched every one of your videos, some several times. Once again thank you.
gorgeous work, and so helpful, thank you!
Could you please share the link to the reference image?... Also which acrylic colors like color names did you mix for base wash? I am a novice... So asking
Your work is amazing. I am just starting to use liquid charcoal. I understand when you say you are at a point in the piece and a little intimidated to try a new step. Thank you for taking the time to share your work!
Magic watching your process. Thank you 🙏
Love your work, it is amazing.
you are amazing it is a very good job!!!
Talking and workingto gather helps me.
Inspiring experiment
Beautiful 🤎🤎🤎🤎
I love it
This is an awesome tutorial. I learned a lot. What brand of brushes do you use for the initial wash?
I cannot wait yo try it.
Great stuff! Thanks for taking the time to film and share your knowledge.
Lovely piece! You are very skilled, so happy to have found your channel! I use alcohol to create textures/abstraction on my initial washes, I’ve never thought about acetone. I wonder if there’s a difference or if it just evaporates faster? I’ll have to give it a try.
This looks amazing!
Thank Gad i found this vid. i did know one could use charcoal on canvas. Will definitely give it a try!!! 😬😬
So cool. Great work!
Beautiful work, Question I tried a piece similar to your technique but encountered a couple of problems. 1. the acetone just dripped and the charcoal went with it (had to kind of start over and paint over it) 2. Compressed charcoal sticks hardly would come off onto the canvas. Any suggestions on that? thanks if you do reply and love your work
I adjust the spray nozzle on my bottle to a lighter spray to avoid drips, but sometimes the drips make a cool effect that I just run with. I don't use compressed charcoal for that reason. Just charcoal powder and vine charcoal. Hope that helps. Thanks!
@@JoelPilcherArt Thanks! Ya vine works great for sure. I'll work on that acetone part if I ever do another piece which actually looked pretty nice.
Thank you. I wear a mask when adding charcoal powder. In Canada, the powder is considered toxic. Take care.
Wow...just incredibly powerful and stunning. Thank you for this; amazing artist you are. 🙌🙏🔥😊🇨🇦
That's really impressive. I've been looking for more charcoal tips. Thanks!
Wow. Unique and beautifully appropriate to wildlife subject matter.
what colors shades did you make use of?
I believe this one was a raw umber wash for the base and ultramarine blue in the shadows
Totally wow! Brilliant and so original 👊👌👏
Hi Joel I recently discovered your channel. Love your experiments. What I liked to ask you what kind of sponge are you using for the blending? Keep up the awesome work. I will be following closely because there is a lot to learn so thank you. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank Georgina! It's a basic dry sponge. It actually came with a set of paint brushes that I ordered years ago. Not sure of the brand or specs.
Absolutely amazing! Charcoal is such a fun medium to work with. 🙂. If I may ask, when you lay charcoal on to a canvas, could the wash be with water at first? Also, do you always use acetone to fix it to the canvas or will the fixative do that as well? (Is acetone a crucial part in fixing charcoal to the canvas?)
The bison reminds me of the ones here in the national park in Alberta. ☺️
I've considered adding water to the charcoal powder. Could be a cool effect, but I'm not sure that it would erase very well. The acetone is not necessary to fix the charcoal to the canvas. While I believe it helps, the main reason I use it is for the effect. A fixative spray without acetone would be sufficient.
Thank you SO much! I have learned so much!✝️👏🏻🤍☺️
Acetone is toxic maybe used
ethyl alcohol instead bro.
I honestly thought you had painted a "one-eyed" bison until you put the cool wash over it😆, then it popped into focus. Came out great!
Absolument Magnifique.👏👏👏💜
bravo man, youre so cool!
Joel - I am a figurative artist. I am very very fortunate to have found my teacher Roberto Altmann in Genova Italy to help me. He was a student of Pietro Annigoni which is the exact artwork and style that resonates with me. I want to say I greatly enjoy watching your work and process and it makes me see other Artists who LOVE what they do! Continued success for many many more years to come! Very inspiring for others. Thanks- Frank P. Fiametta III……I follow you on Instagram…
Thank you, Frank!!
I had a college art teacher tell me to use water with acrylic to make a wash for underpainting 30 years ago. After 30 years the science says to use a medium, I use golden airbrush medium for thinning paints to a watery-wash consistency. The reason water is shunned is that it separates the acrylic polymer and creates an unstable base for the rest of the painting, eventually, your painting may peel from the canvas. On a different note, you made me want to try charcoal on canvas. I especially liked your video on how to affix the charcoal permanently.
Love watching your unique technique- Thank you for sharing!
Phenomenal. I’ve been following you on Instagram for a while and thought man I’d love to see a breakdown of how you work, so I came here and was not disappointed. Amazing work.
Thank you!!
That came out really good love watching your video I learn slot from it thank you
THANK YOU !!!!!
Hey! I learned a few cool things from your video. Thanks!
Well well done. Lovely.
Thanks Joe. Learned a lot just from this one video. Great work!
Love the dramatic presentation of your work! Not just another bison painting.
That big fellow just about jumps out of your canvas... great work bro super cool
Beautiful piece, looks like you could run your fingers through its fur. Came for the instructions, subbed for the quality of the work and your mellow, charming personality. Might be a weird thing to say but I feel like I'm watching Dave Bautista's baby brother create beautiful art. Checking out the rest of your vids. Hoping you have a materials vid and if not, please consider doing one.
Thank you! I'm planning to do a materials vid soon.
Really outstanding work! Thank you!
I learn so much watching your vudeo
You’re really good😮
Execellent artwork👏
Hi Joel. I am so excited to have found this video! my passion is the lushness of charcoal as well and the verserlity of acrylic. I recently completed a project using bothe these mediums but i layered it with an acrylic binder after using a fixtive on the charcoal. would love your input on this Thank you
Very nice technique....impressive and love the results!
You're so relatable 😊. Amazing 👏
Love your work, well done !
Wow! That is very unique. I love it!
Thanks for sharing Joe. Have a good day.
Love it. Glad I found your channel
thank you so kind that is my favit animal
Your left horn is too flat
Absolutely beautiful 😮 watching from Norway
Thank you!
Your art is absolutely stunning!
I am loving seeing your journey and experimentation! What workable fixative do you use?
Thanks Leslie! I use Krylon.
@@JoelPilcherArt sir this type of fixative is expensive... Isn't it sir?
The best of the best wow wow wow
I really enjoyed this video
Your completed work looks so dynamic between the highlights and the shadows. Did you put the cool wash after you added the workable fixative? I’ve been trying you techniques (not quite) with a portrait and I have a white background and I’m stuck lol. I may have to try a wash in the background. Thanks for the video. 👍🏽
Thank you! Yes, the cool wash was actually applied after two layers of charcoal with the workable fixative sprayed once for each layer. It can be a little tricky to work out, but keep at it and I'm sure you'll get it. Good luck!
STUNNING.......I LUUUUV IT.......
