Just wanted to watch someone draw or paint a bear. That’s what I searched for, that’s what I came for, that’s what I got. Very pleased. I love bears. Cooler than dinosaurs no cap.
Unbelievable technique that creates the allusion that when touching the bear’s fur your hand would disappear. You are so very talented and creative! Keep your videos coming with different choices of animals. This is my first viewing of your videos and I am looking forward to many more. Thank you!
That is awesome! As an artist myself and always looking for new tricks, tips and technics you have shown me stuff I wouldn't of thought of on my own! And I know how very large project can be kinda scary to start!!
Man, he is a big ‘un. Good choice on the 48”x48”. Really let’s you pull out the details in the eyes, muzzle, and fur. But, again, it really pops when you apply your technique- especially the glaze and final highlights. Another fine one, Joel. Troy
I'm just branching out, from my usual small-scale alcohol marker and color pencil work, to try larger pieces in new mediums.... SO GLAD I came across your videos!! Thanks for inspiring me and showing off the tipr/tricks! :)
Love your work Joel! I love drawing in charcoal. My first drawing was of a Model T Ford that belonged to my art teacher. That was in 4th grade. I quit doing art for years and picked it back up a couple years ago. Recently I rediscovered my love of charcoal. Watching your videos is inspiring to me.
Oh my gosh that is unbelievably beautiful. You have such a gift. I’m sure you get asked often….but….any guess on how long the whole piece took you to create?
Awesome work. It would be fantastic to see a few longform videos (tutorials) from you. I would gladly pay for those, maybe on a Patreon page (?). Thank you for sharing these shorter videos too.
I m happy because what I love the most is drawing and your art is a beautiful mixte of the two. I m glad to have fond you. May I dare ask you where did you take your pretty photo ? I would like to try because this is the nickname of my teddy husband 😊 but I am desperately looking for à photo and nothing please me as much as your. If you prefer to keep your référence I will understand. Already a big thank you for all tant I learned
There are many resources for artist reference photos. I either work directly with a photographer to gain permission or purchase rights from a website. If you google wildlife reference photos for artists you should find some good ones. I can't remember exactly where I got this one. Thanks!
Man you're amazing!! Thank you so much for this content. I've a question. What is exactly the blue layer on shadows?acrylic with..? And in the end do you use some kind of fixed or barnish? Thanx
Awesome work, Do you prep your canvas before the acrylic or charcoal base layer? I've heard of using watercolor ground medium, but it's very expensive to cover a canvas that size.
Es un duro en dibujar bien grande increible, como hacen las sombras, y el boceto todo a pulso no necesita copiar todo a pulso maneja bien las proporciones, eso deberia demorarse bastante el cuadro.
I love this! Great job! Chris.

You should have a lot more subs mate. Great work !!
What is „workable fixable“ ? Beautiful piece you created there
Krylon workable fixative spray to seal the charcoal to the canvas. Thanks!
Oh my gosh that is unbelievably beautiful. You have such a gift.
I’m sure you get asked often….but….any guess on how long the whole piece took you to create?
Thank you! Usually they take a few days to a week depending on the size.
Thank you, I enjoy your work, like to watch how you use the different mediums on your art. Amazing
Thank you so much!
Amazing!🔥
This is so cool. I'm working on the rockies with charcoal and acrylic. Man...is it messy stuff.
Really well done!
Thanks Natasha!
Good work altogether 👌 I am a big fan of you. You are an inspiration for beginners like us. Thank you for sharing this 😊
Thank you!
I'm curious how much you would charge or this particular painting. Very nice.
Please email me (joel@joelpilcherart.com) for original artwork pricing info. Thanks!

I"m trying to learn how to mix paint with charcoal and love your work. What color paint did you use for background and also for your wash?
For this one I believe it was burnt umber and warm gray. Thanks!
Hi Joel love your work. I do a lot of pencil drawings but would like to try charcoal can you tell me the products you use most of
For charcoal I'm currently using Coates charcoal powder and Marie's vine charcoal. Thanks!
I love it!!! So alive!!!! Tell me why do you use the acetone?
It helps seal the charcoal and I love the abstract water effect. Thanks!
Can we use fixative instead of acetone ??
Awesome pic!!! Is the paint color ochre? And what ratio to thin it?
The color is raw umber. Not sure of the exact ratio, but it's very wet. Thanks!
Man you're amazing!! Thank you so much for this content. I've a question. What is exactly the blue layer on shadows?acrylic with..? And in the end do you use some kind of fixed or barnish? Thanx
Hello, why the charcoal powder ? Does it not fall off.
Im real curious...where sre you purchasing your canvases? Are you stretching your own? If so what material?
Awesome work, Do you prep your canvas before the acrylic or charcoal base layer? I've heard of using watercolor ground medium, but it's very expensive to cover a canvas that size.
No, I buy the canvases stretched and pre primed, but I don't do any additional prep to them. Thanks!
I’ve never heard of aceton can you explain
It's just nail polish remover that I buy at Walmart. It creates a texture/effect that I like.
What is the acetone you spay and why
the color of your brown acrylic wash is burnt umber? burnt Sienna or yellow ochre?
The base color was raw umber, but I added a few other colors to it. Can't remember what they were. Sorry.
Es un duro en dibujar bien grande increible, como hacen las sombras, y el boceto todo a pulso no necesita copiar todo a pulso maneja bien las proporciones, eso deberia demorarse bastante el cuadro.
Joel, I truly love your artist style! Question are you using a paper or a canvas?
Canvas. Thanks!
Have u tried the method using oil paints and charcoal?
No, I haven't yet.
What does acetone do?
What it I use pastels will that work?
l would be scared every time l passed by this huge Kodiak Grizzly on the wall. l would jump back ,and go wow look out !
did you fix the painting before you added colors?
Yes, I spray it with a workable fixative between each layer of charcoal.
Does it has to be workable fixitive???? I got brusto fixitive will that work??
I'm not sure, but my guess is that it would. Best to test it out first.
a wrestler's body but has an amazing talent for painting 😁
Cool as fuck.
