I’ve been fortunate to be able to support my family as a full-time artist for over a decade and I’m hoping to share my journey and knowledge with others so they can do the same. Maybe I’ll provide a little entertainment along the way as well.
I occasionally pick up a paint brush and work in color, but my true passion is working with charcoal and I love the classic and timeless look and feel of black and white. I've developed a unique process where I use charcoal on canvas. It allows me to create a final product that is more durable than traditional charcoal methods. I've always considered art to be an adventure and I'm constantly pushing my limits and working to try new things and improve.
I love creating art and I really enjoy seeing the pleasure others experience in viewing my artwork. I hope you enjoy following along. Thanks!!

Oil Paint Glaze Over a Charcoal Mule Deer Drawing
Really enjoyed drawing this one. Charcoal and oil paint on 40"x30" canvas. Mule deer are always a fun challenge. This was my first time drawing a doe and a buck together. Thanks for watching!

Drawing a Big Bison with Charcoal on Canvas
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 місяці тому
Probably my favorite bison drawing so far. Started with a couple layers of gesso on a 36"x48" canvas. Sketched out the big guy with a charcoal pencil, then started adding more layers to make him come alive. So much fun! Hope you enjoy watching. Thanks! Oil Paint Glazing Over a Charcoal Cowboy Drawing
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
I'm really enjoying the textures I'm getting as I work to develop my technique with this charcoal drawing and oil paint glazing process. I brushed on a couple layers of gesso before beginning the charcoal drawing. Then after sealing a few layers of charcoal, I glazed over it all with an oil paint wash. It's a really fun process. Hope you enjoy watching. Thanks! Artwork available here: joelpilch...
Oil Glaze Over a Charcoal Pronghorn Drawing on Canvas

I'm starting to feel more a little comfortable with this process, but it still makes me nervous every time I brush the oil paint over my charcoal drawing. This was a fun subject as well. Pronghorn antelope are one of the most commonly seen wild animals in the area where I live, so it was fun to finally draw/paint one. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks everyone! This charcoal drawing was a very special and intimidating one for me, but it was also enjoyable and I'm very happy with the outcome. I hope I did it justice and I hope you enjoy watching the video of me creating it. Thanks for your support! Painting an Oil Glaze Over a Charcoal Moose Drawing
Переглядів 4,8 тис.Рік тому
Just experimenting here with a new idea for my charcoal drawings. I drew the charcoal moose following my usual process, but then decided to add a sepia tone by glazing over it with oil paint and then using a subtractive technique to lighten values. Overall I'm very happy with the outcome and the process is an absolute blast. Hope you enjoy watching. Thanks! Available artwork: joelpilcherart.com...
Drawing a Velvet Mule Deer with Charcoal on Canvas

I've drawn A LOT of hard horned antlers, so it was a fun challenge to create the softer texture of velvet on this mule deer. This charcoal drawing was done on 30"x40" canvas. Hope you enjoy it. Thanks! Artwork available here: joelpilcherart.com/collections/summer-swag-collection
How I Seal My Charcoal on Canvas Art - UPDATE!
Переглядів 22 тис.Рік тому
Update! - I did a previous video explaining my process for sealing my charcoal original drawings, but I've had to change a few things (mostly due to problems with product availability). So, I decided to do a new video and I included a some additional details. I hope this adds some clarification. If there are any other questions, please leave them in the comments. Thanks! Gorilla Art Time Lapse - First Time Using Charcoal & Oil Paint Together
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
I like trying new processes. Art should be an adventure, and this smaller piece was exactly that. It was the first time for me using charcoal and oil paint together. I love subtractive drawing with charcoal, so I thought I'd try a similar process with oil painting. It was so fun! I'm sure I'll be doing more like this. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks! Drawing a Bull Moose with Charcoal on Canvas

I actually created this bull moose piece back in August of 2021. My process for drawing with charcoal on canvas has changed a bit, but it's still a fun one to watch. Hope you enjoy. Thanks! Artwork available here: joelpilcherart.com/
Drawing and Painting a Big Bass with Charcoal and Acrylic on Canvas
Переглядів 2,8 тис.Рік тому
I've never caught a largemouth bass this big, but it sure was fun to draw and paint! This piece is titled "Hooked". I started with an acrylic wash, added a base of charcoal powder, then sketched it out with vine charcoal. Next I used a kneaded eraser to erase out highlights, sprayed with acetone and fixative, then added another layer fo charcoal. Finally I painted in the highlights with acrylic...
Drawing a Bison with Charcoal on Canvas
Переглядів 2,7 тис.Рік тому
This bison drawing is titled "Headstrong" and I created it using charcoal on canvas. I've drawn quite a few of these animals because they're one of my favorite. Bison used to be scattered throughout the area where I currently live and I still have the opportunity to see them when I ride my mountain bike out on Antelope Island. So cool. Hope you enjoy the video. Thanks! Prints and product featur...
Drawing & Painting an African Lion: Charcoal & Acrylic on Canvas
Переглядів 4,2 тис.Рік тому
This lion is obviously the king of his domain. I titled this drawing/painting "No Worries" because he doesn't seem to have any. It also pays homage to a favorite animated movie from my childhood. Using this combination of charcoal and acrylic is a challenge, but the unique result is always worth the effort. I love drawing lions and hope to do more soon. Hope you enjoy this video. Thanks! Drawing and Painting a Moose with Charcoal and Acrylic on Canvas

This moose artwork is titled "Big Dipper" and I created it using charcoal and acrylic on canvas. I do a lot of mountain biking in the Rocky Mountains near where I live and I often see moose along the trail. Years ago while backpacking and fishing in the Uintahs in north eastern Utah, I witnessed a scene very similar to this one with a bull moose wading through the shallows of a lake. The image ...

THANK YOU !!!!!
bravo man, youre so cool!
Thank you so much! Could I use a super smooth paint roller to apply finishes?
gorgeous work, and so helpful, thank you!
Wow! What a masterpiece! I love it so much! Thank you for sharing your process, the results are so stunning! I am in love with your art. I will certainly give a try at charcoal on a canvas!
Where do I purchase a print
Prints are available at joelpilcherart.com. Thanks!
Wow...its brilliant...do you gesso the canvas to get a smooth canvas
Excellent work
You’re really good😮
Hi great artist the 1st level of work is maden with charcoal or graphite??? Tks by now
Joel, love your work and your videos! Thank you! One question- can you erase back to white or lift the charcoal after the acetone? And what about lifting after the first fixative ? Thanks a million . I gave a big piece on my easel and would hate to wreck it!!
IMPORTANT QUESTION: I'm a graphite portrait artist and desire to do my portraits on smooth gesso board, for archival purposes. Do you know if I can use your same sealing technique for my work?
Your work is sooooo dramatic and impactful. Thank you for sharing. Just a quick technical question, If you are working on an Ipad, how do you keep the screen from turning on and off every few minutes?
This is an awesome tutorial. I learned a lot. What brand of brushes do you use for the initial wash? I cannot wait yo try it.
Dude im im jamming out over here.
Do you provide tutorials?
Hey Joel, This is Jimmy Smith art, I think it's showing up to you as Laura Smith, my wife. But anyway, Could you tell me what kind or what brand of white pencil that works best on on canvas charcoal drawings? Does pastel & chalk pencils work as good as charcoal pencils? Also how many times can you workable fix your canvas drawings. Some times I'll go 4 times, reckon that cool?
Good job
Big wow !! Respect ✊🏿 from Africa !!
Awesome work Joel. I'm so inspired now. I am experimenting with acrylics just now and stumbled upon your video. I just need to find what I want to paint now, I'm dying to try this technique. Thank you. x
Subscribed because man, look at that art. I'm also interested in this sealing method in particular. Is the isolation coat a general acrylic medium layer, or is there something specific about the soft gel that makes it work?
Paint the fence, Daniel-San! Came here looking for the proper way to fix charcoal drawings; got a good solution for that, and also appreciated the fantastic art and the revelation of charcoal on canvas. I mean, I can't think why not, but it never occurred to me before...
THANK YOU SO MUCH I GOT THE ANSWER I NEEDED. I SHOULD HAVE SEARCH LONG TIME AGO. ABOUT COATING CHARCOAL ART WORK. 😂😂😂
❤❤❤THIS IS BEAUTIFUL I LOVE IT. AWESOME JOB
Thanks for sharing. GOD BLESS YOU
Among the factors that you stated for the over hunting of the bison, one of which was the 'One less buffalo is one less Indian' program... they were trying to starve out the plains Natives. Very sad part of american history. They don't teach the important stuff in public schools.
Oh yea, also Bison are my favorite land animal as well :)
Hi Joel. I just found your channel. Your work is amazing. I was wondering if you have to prepare a canvas to accept charcoal? Do you use a ground or does the canvas have enough tooth as is?
Hi Joel so so stocked I stumbled upon you!!! Love your work! I too love working with charcoal but have only done a couple of drawings thus far. Making a living from my passion would be amazing! I’d love to watch all your videos from start to finish on how you apply & work your charcoal/mediums. I love attention to detail & realism is definitely my style. Why I love your work so much! Can’t wait to watch your series of videos 🙏🏼😁 thank you from Australia Bridget
Absolutely beautiful! I’ve just been doing charcoal for a little while never thought I could I could get away with using acrylic ! Fantastic! I really enjoy your videos and never stop learning, Thank you!❤
Thank you!
Thanks for the explanation! I just now discovered your work on Instagram, and of course, the first reaction is a question instead of a compliment for your extraordinary art! (I'm a why girl. 🤷♀️) I am a poor excuse of a sketches, but my watercolors bring me joy. I hope your work brings you as much joy as I find in looking at all the wonderful animals you create. 💜
What does acetone do?
Im real curious...where sre you purchasing your canvases? Are you stretching your own? If so what material?
Wow!!! Spectacular. I’m speechless
Watching you work , not only did I learn technique but I’ve also taken in a great sense of discipline , a pure sense of service , and the benefits of physical fitness . You are a great man ! And by the time I learn and start fully painting in charcoal I hope to become like you ! Full of Stoic sense of being mixed with discipline and creativity .if I wasn’t in Ethiopia I would have purchased a print !! But I hope that my honest heartfelt words become your currency.
Wow i just found your channel. Do you spray the canvas before you start to dtaw .thanks
I'm blown away again by your art thank you for sharing your gift
Wow! What a powerful and beautiful song work!!! I have loved each video you do. Keep on bringing joy with your amaz talents ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Joel, you influenced me to switch to Charcoal on canvas I found it more practical and I got addicted to it. Greatly appreciate your insightful demonstrations. cheers man, your talent is unbelievable
I love Charcoal. I want to eventually have one done of my Newfoundland.
I have Krylon Workable Fixatif, would that work the same? 🤔
Made it 100likes
Sir please 🥺 tell me if I can only use liquitex satin varnish on charcoal sketch
sir please tell me which varnish you can use for chacoal drawing plz plz tell me
do you have any issues with the varnish flattening the values? i tried using a matte varnish on a charcoal sketch to see what would happen and it felt like all the values got leveled out. i was using a few different materials so could be that too
Hi can I ask if you can use a small sponge roller credible work. Really beautiful.
I don’t know why I haven’t really done this before, but I came across your video when I had the thought to do more work with drawing all of CT he detail and glazing rather than predominantly painting a subject. I don’t want to limit myself to one particular style so I’m looking for variation. This is the first video I’ve found which was exactly what I was searching for, so thank you. How much more specific could I have gotten then by searching “detailed drawing under oil glazes”? 🫠
Why did you spray the acetone?
Wow!
Very helpful
