Carissimo maestrissimo, another brilliant vlog - you just gave a 5-year instructional course in charcoal drawing in 15 minutes!!! One of the zillion things we instructors have to get our wannabe-a-Realist-painter students to understand is that, as you say here, a good work of Realism starts out ABSTRACT!! A painting/drawing is made of smudges and tones. As you know, this is how I make my underdrawing stage, but using oil paint, before I go on to the underpainting stage (usually, these days, in deadcolour). Annigoni, under whom I studied in the 1960s, would have loved this liquid charcoal!!! I'm passing this vlog on to our students at the Angel Academy-they'll learn a LOT! Thanks for this. (I'm going to be out of Florence for a part of the summer, giving workshops in Yorkshire and Ireland-after my workshop in Florence-but let's try to get together for a drink or five when you and Valentina are in Florence this summer!)
Forgive me, but I noticed that you stopped using the liquid charcoal at 3:50 and the remaining artwork was completed with solid charcoal 😅 I was hoping for a full demo on liquid charcoal like the title suggests. 😊 but your choice causes me to wonder if liquid charcoal is only best for initial stages? Is there some reason why you cannot use the liquid for the whole piece? Basically, I want to understand your thinking. Why did you choose to finish the piece with the solid charcoal over the liquid? Please, I would love to see a full liquid charcoal video if possible
I just made my own for a school project by scraping the charcoal into a powder and adding it to water and gesso to create a painting. I didn't know they actually sold liquid charcoal! X3
Wow...Cesar The painting looks absolutely terrific I love the way the corner of the mouth, above the eye, the collar bone is defined.... And the loose strands of hair, and porcelain skin it's just so perfect
HOW I DRAW WITH LIQUID CHARCOAL;-- Saw the video and yr above demonstration. You are a MASTER PAINTER. Only a few are gifted like that. Yr grasping of human details and the way the human body reflects different shades based on the angle with which it hits the figure is stunning. When you see closely at the figure one wonders whether it is painted or photographed, such are the delicate details. I am myself little experienced in drawing and painting but cannot come even near you. Yr grasping of human detauls and understanding of light and shade is inique and unparalled. Vatsa BANGALORE INDIA
the zip and pep in your performance is the reason why your work looks alive.SIMPLY AMAZING!! and thanks for introducing a new medium for me to try out!
Wow! A terrific drawing at every stage of it. I might have stopped when he was at about the halfway mark. A really good teaching demo! I can’t wait to try this!
Very very nice work..... I love pencil drawing i love your all pencil work ..... Every work very helpful.... I am using your teknik.......... I am an little artist in India... U are a very talented...👉💗
@Cesar Santos WOW ....Cesar...or should I call you God....:) A true CREATIVE ARTIST... .I bet you will be just as BRILLIANT working with mud from your back garden as you are working with Liquid Charcoal; regardless of the medium you play with... Thank you for the precious time you are spending with us. XX
Great review Cesar Santos. It's basically a mutation of two mediums behaviors: oils and watercolors because it's very flexible like oils where you can keep applying layers but the consistency of a water based property. I will try it.
It's the first time that I see this product and I'm really impressed, it looks great for an underdrawing. Such wonderful technique and skill increase my appetite for work like crazy :))
Very late reply and you've probably already got an answer but, just in case, yes it is erasable in the same way as regular charcoal, *when it has dried*.
Superb ! I enjoyed watching your technique in this one and how it evolved. I think I will try some of this liquid charcoal on my ink wash wax resist drawings. Thanks for posting this ! 👍😃
That was awesome! may i know, did you draw that by imagination or by seeing some photograph? & how much time taken to draw from start to end? - fan from india
Now you've got me excited about maybe using charcoal generally this media is Messi for me and I have always had a problem controlling. I've been way from art from so long that everything is new to me and exciting keep making videos thank you
Awesome Cesar...as always. Also such great music choices - old school ‘real musicians’ playing live together before the ‘help’ of computers 😄 a pleasure to listen to as well as watch. Thanks for sharing this 🙏
Have found any quality difference between the original Nitram sticks and those now produced in Canada? What is that large blending pad you are using made of?
Your work is amazing as usual! I have two questions about the liquid charcoal! Is it really the same temperature of the sticks? The sticks look warmer in video! And also is the liquid charcoal erasable once it dries? Thank you for sharing your process on UA-cam I always feel like I learn a lot by watching your videos!
Gum arabic makes it not erasable as it is a binder and you can only (in the way we usually talk about erasing as with rubber eraser) erase what only sits onto of a surface held by friction and static. But you can wash it off completely if your surface can take that.
@@alexvelasquez3945 honestly the way he used it is a good way to use it, seeing how muddy it looks I don't think it would be easy to paint a whole thing with it (with the same results of normal charcoal)! But then why use liquid charcoal like that when you can just use any other paints if it doesn't even have the property of charcoal? At the ends it's basically gouache 🤔 I think that mixing powder charcoal and only water would be better at this point.
@@weronoyume I just received it and was thinking it would have the property of charcoal once dry. Well you are right it's like basically using black gouache. Liquid charcoal I think is just a catchy name. Regular gouache would achieve the same effect.
Hola maestro, hope you are well. Love the interview you did with Creative Masterminds. I always learn a lot from you, not just about art but also about your work ethic and philosophy. Its very inspiring and motivational. I really admire your skills and dedication. You got talent. I was wondering if you ever tried acrylics again after you mastered oils. I would be interested in seeing you do an Acrylics vs Oils video. Maybe do two copies of the same portrait but one in acrylics and one in oils? I wonder if the medium would affect your style since you already master both oils and acrylics. I would love to see the difference. Thanks for all you do. Wish you good health to you and your loved ones. God bless you. Ps. Can you erase those liquid charcoals??? lol.
Great demo, thanks! A note on the links to the Nitram products: you link 5mm sticks and the baton which holds only 4mm sticks. Only one "mignonette" refill products seems to exist, a soft one. Nitram's website is not very clear on this and has no other grades available.
A master like you always nail it. I have few questions; do you also draw portraits/figures without reference often? And if so, would it be possible to show us one of your work that was done without reference? I’m pretty once again I will be blown away per usual. Great fan of yours 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿

:o is this real? And you studied under annigoni 😵.
@@santocesart do you tattoo or have you tried? I see you got tattoos your self.

Santos' work is really something special. Plus the man has energy for days.
I had never heard of liquid charcoal until today, and I've been using charcoal for about ten years now. What a great video.

SOOOO; is this liquid charcoal easily erased? IF so, can it be erased with a kneaded eraser or does it need a different eraser to do the job?
