I still think that the funniest outcome of the pronouns rant was a mod that "removed" pronouns from the game, but all it really did was remove the choice of pronouns in the character creation system. But then that presents a problem, what pronouns do you assign to the player since the game still has to, ya know, have dialogue based on that choice. And believe it or not there are female bigots too. So what the mod did was default everyone to "They/Them" so that they wouldn't have to pick the pronoun and it wouldn't misgender anyone. So in trying to erase pronouns, they ended up making everyone use nonbinary pronouns. In the end they've become what they hated the most lol
omfg that's so fucking funny, was it intentionally to fuck with the anti-woke crybabies or did they seriously not get the hypocrisy of making everyone they/them?
At the end of the day, one thing will always remain true: Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield came out a month from each other, and both had a “pronoun selector” in character creation.
The question is, what if anything does that fact *mean*. If you're like Pronouns Guy, then it's sufficient justification for diaper-filling, if you're the average person, it's more of a "huh, okay then" moment.

yeah baulder's gate 3 lets you create nb or trans characters but it doesn't get brought up like starfield does, because it was widely considered a very good game. 'wokeness' is used as an example of why a game is bad if the game is bad or mid & swept under the rug if the game is good. as most games are 'woke' by antiwoke standards, ofc most woke games are bad or mid (most games are bad or mid) it reminds me of everyone freaking out about the ghostbusters film with women instead of men. it was always alleged to be bad bc it had women instead of men, but the exact same film with men would also have been really bad...
I've always held the opinion that it's a lot easier to get away with these type of critiques with negatively received media vs. positively received media. Even if you don't Necessarily agree with some of the anti woke points. It's alot easier to watch the video because you either have a bad experience or you know multiple different yourubers are coming out with negative reviews. So you kinda ignore it at first. I remember I would watch some of synthetic man's videos I never really noticed his political takes. Untill his far cry 6 review. He kept making points about the anti-American narratives being pushed by the characters and npcs. It was dumb because in game it's set in a country that's based off of Cuba. A place where even anti Castro guerillas typically are very anti America. Then I saw some of the videos afterwards and it became clear what he actually believed. I just thought he was another game reviewer/ game retrospective UA-camr. Even looking back he had piss poor critiques of the games he would talk about. His last of us 2 review he literally admitted to not even playing the game. He watched a video that played all the games Cutscenes.

However, in the game's resurgence, those criticisms stayed dead. Because the game had its bugs fixed, despite all the "woke" stuff remaining as it was. I'd argue that the giraffes in the first game are more of a logical in universe leap to exist than one publically LGBT supporting store with a rainbow painted crosswalk in 2013. Worth noting that BG3 does tackle polyamory more realistically, with some characters being cool with it and others insisting on monogamy. And the playersexuality doesn't negate the fact that BG3 is a _very_ sexual game that will remind you of that fact even if you aren't actively seeking it out. Y'know, Jessie Gender did a video on how Starfield doesn't really engage with gender in the way a lot of prior sci-fi had. In that respect, AZ kind of picked up that Bethesda's LGBT inclusion is kind of token and there to curry favor rather than explore anything. That being said, it is absurd how upset he got over it. Sci-fi tends to play with things like gender all the damn time. Not even obscure or esoteric sci-fi - Star Trek had an agendered species in the 90s, complete with a discussion of pronouns. Grow up, bud. Fiction is about exploring ideas, not reinforcing your existing prejudices. Even if Starfield did it badly, just say that.

I don't know. Mass Effect introduced an agendered alien species and discussed gender in at least some capacity back in 2007. I don’t think think he'd have the same reaction to it, either because of his nostalgia for the imagined good old days before identity politics or because it's not as overt.

It matters a lot to him right now, but eventually him and everyone like him will pass from this world unmourned, and the rest of us will be able to play our videogames (and do everything else) without some asshole screaming about why we should care what someone calls themselves or if that's "real" or "scientific" not. I don't know if I'll live to see that day, but I know it will happen eventually. There's less bigots every day, no matter how desperately they try to convince us that it's the opposite.
Adding to what’s been said here already, it bears noting that a lot the alt-right/anti-woke narratives people like Az & their viewers are working with descend from the (fascistic) myth of a (racially & sexually) pure ‘golden age’ in living memory that’s been destroyed by leftist ideas and ‘degenerate’ gender/sexual norms. This isn’t a framework that the online right ever really explicitly argues for (outside of the really whacko spaces) but it’s there in the negative space behind a lot of their content. This is a part of why ‘current day’ = supposedly corrosive queering of gender norms / binaries, etc.
it is honestly kinda sad seeing how much people like this guy become almost parodies of themselves just in order to remain relevant rather than actually doing stuff that they're passionate about... and ofc if they give up the grift then it means admitting that it WAS just a grift that they can no longer sustain, it's like a vicious cycle in a way lol... anyway a brilliantly concise and well put together video as usual!!!
Dead Domain kinda touched upon this idea in their Synthetic Man video, once an internet personality/content creator pivots to that sort of tone for their material, they *can't stop* otherwise they lose out on that sweet sweet grifter money and connections. Its basically just a self-perpetuating loop of negativity and fans who want *more* of that negativity until the content creator is a borderline cartoon of an individual that wouldn't look or have opinions out of place in a Simpsons Comic Book Guy scene.
And even if they decided they didn't care about the money, who would want to be associated with them afterwards? Grifting is all they really have, there is no Plan B

"When Republicans talk about valuing 'freedom,' they’re speaking of it in the sense that only people like them should ultimately possess it." -- Ethan Grey, The Message of the Republican Party (highly recommended 5 minute read).
@TheLongestTake Strangely it’s only a matter of free speech to be able to say slurs without consequence. Literal book bans targeting queer and minority authors: silence from the “give me free speech or give me death” crowd.
Thinking back on it now, calling adding queer diversity "current-day"-ing in a game about the future implies they believe a future without queer people is an absolute certainty rather than a desperate fantasy
or you can read it positively, that people got over that shit and its an actual non issue because the bigotry no longer exists... its as much a pipe dream sadly...
Not what current day means, though. It's an old reference to a Trudeau speech. It will always be the current day, it's not about the future. Because it will be the current day then too.
@@ChucksSEADnDEAD I don't see what that means in application to being "done to us" I guess? I mean the speech clip is just kinda saying "we will always be in the present, and even the future will be the present when we get there" which is kind of a nothing sentence tbh. Even though it's referencing an older speech though, I still think my point stands that many who hate queer people believe a future where we don't exist is destined to be true
I mean, yeah. Conservative bigots (needless repetition, but you get the idea) seem to overwhelmingly believe that The Big Gay is a fad that will disappear once everyone comes to their senses, and the more normalized it gets the more upset they become because they don't want it to exist *at all.* There is no compromise, there is only their way.
I think Jessie Gender has a really good analysis of Starfield that came out relatively close to the release. @@chaserseven2886 i wouldn't say starfields a gender or sexuality type of game but it still has elements of that in the game that she criticised which is probably what the comment your replying meant
@@chaserseven2886 ...I mean the comment your under basically states "she goes over the games handle of gender and sexuality AND the emptiness of the experience" impling she criticised more than just the little pronouns option in the game Especially when you take into consideration her video length being decently big So why would she take the time to ONLY criticise one aspect of a game you said was even the main theme
What is going on? Why does this game set in the future have all this current day shit in it? Land owners? WAGES?! I just wanted to have some escapist fun and the people in this game world have to earn money to sustain themselves. Freakin WAAAGES!
In spite of milking it for all it’s worth, I hope the pronouns guy secretly utterly despises fact that a sizeable number of people know him only by that moniker.
"what's going on here?" Ask any trans woman who has been hit on by a straight cis man before he discovered she was trans. Its the exact same trans panic dynamic. He was into the game until he discovered it had transness in it, and suddenly he's having a meltdown. He felt betrayed and humiliated. Because his masculinity is toxic and fragile.
It's not even "transness", especially when you consider how humans form where everyone starts female, and only gain male traits later in development. It should be easy for a society with the ability to make human clones, to also be able to alter them.
Kind of why its extremely important though that trans individuals be upfront 'immedietly' about it with others, otherwise, the backlash is extreme and has been documented to even lead to violence if they were dating someone or even befriending individuals who really hate them. Extremely bigoted/transphobic individuals backlashes are known for the brutality behind them. I honestly didn't care about vae victus' clone having had a sex change(or was just altered during development ect, aka deus ex IW Alex D), ironicly she seemed more daughter-ish than clone to the man. By the time I finished the UC Vanguard terrormorph storyline I nearly forgot the detail entirely. At most, I was annoyed, as at best it wasn't even necessary, the story holds its own with/without the detail.
@@laughingalex7563 is it bigotry if it's a woman reacting that way? Because it seems men have to just deal with it, but we won't talk about how a lesbian woman would be guilted into a situation she wouldn't be comfortable with.
@laughingalex7563 Take a moment to actually consider the philosophy behind your suggestion. Your solution to this is to tell queer people that it’s their obligation to tell random strangers about their sexuality or genitals as a handshake conversation. To make the bigots comfortable, the victimized have to cater to their oppressors sensibilities. Would you want to live like that? Do you think it’s fair to ask people to live like that?

And now people are complaining about pronouns and bodyshape in dragon age veilguard creation menu which is pathetic really the only problem I see with it is how limited it is
Dragon Age has always had limited character creation options. And in Origins, for some reason fi you make a male without a beard, their face loses 40 pounds and becomes so gaunt they could pass for a skeleton in a paper mask.
@TimedRevolver i agree their and what people don't realise is that veilguard will probably support modding given that the other games do/did also alot of people don't even know that dragon age has always been pro lgbtq and pro transgender and support black lives matter and pro fandom shipping also the reaction from the culture war side of things is fucking hilarious whre the fuck where these culture war freaks when the last dragon age came out

I’m so tired of these anti woke people who don’t understand that complaining and screaming about things simply because of diversity and inclusion just creates more. If you don’t like it, ignore it and move on and it will go away.
For me it's like if a guy at a restaurant was screaming because they serve pizza with pinapple on it. Like we get it you don't like pinapple on pizza but some people do.. is it so hard to have to see a pinapple pizza on the menu and just carry on and not choose it or see a waiter passing by with a pinapple pizza for another customer that you have to throw a temper tantrum ?
Disney literally just proved the opposite of this by explicitly removing LGBT inclusivity from their recent movie due to backlash. @@MarcoVeraccio Occasionally wanting someone to relate to =/= wanting to be everywhere. Acknowledging the reality that humans come in more than one flavour isn't "propaganda", it's just a basic observation of the reality of humanity. If you want more representation then ask for, you are entitled too it, everybody is. That's the whole point here: the more varied stories we get, the more types of people are represented and the more cultures are considered the more vibrant, interesting and engaging art becomes. So many amazing stories came into being because stories were written from new perspectives, cultures and identities that lie outside the media norm. I just think it's sad that you have have identified the problem: a domination in media almost exclusively by western-centric cis-white male led stories that always feature the same story structure and ideas; but instead of targeting that problem you've chosen instead to get mad at those who try and change it. Oh and that "silent majority" thing has repeatedly been proven to be an outright lie; in-fact there has been shown to be almost no link at all with how progressive's somethings themes are how popular it ends up being. Most people it turns out don't have a particularly strong opinion either way. The most common response to learning a a main character of a show is a minority is to go "oh, neat" before just getting on with their day. I think it's important here to remember that the online spaces we make by their very nature end up being echo chambers and are not representative of the general population.
@@andimason3370 if it was just occasionally and was organic to the plot - no one would have any problem. After watching a bunch of babies throw temper tantrums over GASP SHOCK a woman being the lead character in the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, I hesitated for quite a while on whether to trust in the algorithm and watch this video because merely typing Ghost of Yotei or Dragon Age: The Veilguard has heavily polluted it and I've gotten sick of having to clean it up. I was not familiar with your game and am quite glad I have discovered your channel. A great video and you've earned a sub. Side bar: One thing I HATED about Starfield criticism shortly after release was ALL these kinds of streamers/UA-camrs, and a lot of "normal" streamers and UA-camrs, spent the last three years profiting off ragebait Cyberpunk 2077 videos, which often times were filled with lies or extremely disingenuous takes, only to then use the C2077 expansion Phantom Liberty to make Starfield look "bad." Such blatant hypocrisy in the name of the grift is absurd and pure buffoonery.
What kind of sucks is that, due to genetics, all clones are female, and forming a story around that is a great concept for a story. But I never knew about it before this video.
"Raw-dogged the museum" Immaculate language. To be clear this is genuine praise and not sarcasm, bold choice that makes listening a more engaging experience. As a writer myself, nice.
So, ME2 has a female who is a clone of her male father (with many changes, of course) which is fine, but SF has a character who is a clone of her male father (with many changed, of course) and this is a problem? Is this because one of them is 1,000,000% pandering and the other only 100,000% pandering and the "wrong" skin color?
I agree with that idea that the internet is very much like that phot impairment effect. If I watch a few hours of youtube, genuinely I remember barely any of it. Just a few hours of my life gone. Had a few beers and played pool with my mates earlier on today and I can remember potting three in a row, chipping the ball over my own and off the table. The conversation we had as well. In that half an hour game I can remember more than mutiple weeks worth of youtube content.
unfortunately, I realized where the grifters are coming from. mind you, i know they're man-children with no real problems, but their mindset of identifying underlying politics they don't agree with causing them to rethink media is something I go through when I find out an author was actually bad. but by then, if i liked the product, I'll stick by it, but pirate it
I think this video misses something completely. Why can’t we just enjoy games that WE like? Just because one person disliked 5 seconds of a 7 hour play through it should be bad to everyone? And not to mention people aren’t entitled to the next AAA being for them. I remember growing up and there was a big game for each type of gamer. Same with tv shows. There was a sitcom or drama for everyone. Sure acolyte wasn’t for me. But if someone liked it let them. Don’t make it a politics thing. It simply wasn’t made for you, and that is okay. Just remember hayden christensen at starwars celebration. My generation finally became loud, because his movies were made for me. A starwars kid. Now as an adult, I have mando and andor. Acolyte isn’t for me and it probably wasn’t for you. And that is okay.
Making it a politics thing is the point. The anger and shouting is the way to get engagement, but the point is definitely that entertainment shouldn't do anything they dislike. There's this idea they have that there's an objectively good way for society to be, and that's not how it is now, so anything that pulls them back to that reality while they're trying to escape it is bad.
This comment was a breath of freshair honestly, thank you for sharing your thoughts... On that note, the video has a good conclusion "Starfield was not the problem, the pronouns were not the problem, the shouting was"...

@Bbrit1832 The issue is like the “war on christmas”. Businesses wanted to be inclusive of the people who didn’t celebrate christmas, so people started saying “happy holidays” of course the phrase is quite common and was used prior but that’s irrelevant. What is relevant is that the war on christmas rhetoric was just political propaganda to foster hatred against minorities. So now the argument for those people is that starbucks having a red cup instead of one that explicitly states some christmas message is the destruction of western civilization, and all they hold dear. Their arguments were always disingenuous. They don’t care that it’s marketed to someone else, they have to make hour long rants about every episode of a show they despise because if it doesn’t cater to them it doesn’t belong in society and is actually a conspiracy by the ruling elite to weaken the nuclear family through feminism and diversity. Seriously, just typing it out makes me feel a bit pepe silvia, but it’s the most effective right wing propo campaign in decades.
I don't know what's more ridiculous, that fact that this man is so upset about something that has almost no impact on gameplay or story, or the fact that he wanted to be immersed into star field.

I still think that the funniest outcome of the pronouns rant was a mod that "removed" pronouns from the game, but all it really did was remove the choice of pronouns in the character creation system. 'wokeness' is used as an example of why a game is bad if the game is bad or mid & swept under the rug if the game is good. as most games are 'woke' by antiwoke standards, ofc most woke games are bad or mid (most games are bad or mid)
it reminds me of everyone freaking out about the ghostbusters film with women instead of men. it was always alleged to be bad bc it had women instead of men, but the exact same film with men would also have been really bad...

What's even better is that, in the early life of Cyberpunk, we *did* see a similar Anti-Woke brigade attack it (due to its abysmal release quality).
However, in the game's resurgence, those criticisms stayed dead. Because the game had its bugs fixed, despite all the "woke" stuff remaining as it was. Revealing that those criticisms were arbitrary, and that all of them can just be dismissed without further thought.

TLOU2's Pride stuff is IIRC only in one small part of the game. I will admit it was mostly put there for the developer's own satisfaction (dev service, if you will), but that's the same reasoning that has created a bajillion other features in videogames. I'd argue that the giraffes in the first game are more of a logical in universe leap to exist than one publically LGBT supporting store with a rainbow painted crosswalk in 2013. Also, wait, why are we even talking about TLOU2?
And Starfield is so oddly prudish it _has_ poledancing strippers, but clads them head to toe in modern art bodysuits without skin showing. They'll toy with sci fi gender concepts _in passing_ like mentioning people can get EZ sex changes in the future, but it's no more interested in this stuff than the average comic book is. _(and honestly, I don't think it has to be)_
Feelings on playersexuality varies, but personally I am in favour of it being used sometimes. While it shuts down some opportunities for representation, it better guarentees the experience people want out of the game. _(as opposed to say Cyberpunk 2077, which has only 4 real options split equally between gender/sexuality, so if you are playing a straight woman for example, it's River or nobody)_ While I think more games should try characters with explicit sexualities, there is absolutely a place for playersexual casts.
Worth noting that BG3 does tackle polyamory more realistically, with some characters being cool with it and others insisting on monogamy.
And the playersexuality doesn't negate the fact that BG3 is a _very_ sexual game that will remind you of that fact even if you aren't actively seeking it out. BG3 is the one among these that gives the biggest Pride parade vibes, and yet sidestepped most anti woke controversy, because anti woke content creators don't go after unambiguously great products, they go after low hanging fruit and blame wokeness, real or imagined, as the cause of poor quality.

There are issues with starfield. Having pronouns isn’t one of them. The guy was being a gigantic baby.
Thinking back on it now, calling adding queer diversity "current-day"-ing in a game about the future implies they believe a future without queer people is an absolute certainty rather than a desperate fantasy

He was into the game until he discovered it had transness in it, and suddenly he's having a meltdown. He felt betrayed and humiliated. Because his masculinity is toxic and fragile.
It's not even "transness", especially when you consider how humans form where everyone starts female, and only gain male traits later in development. It should be easy for a society with the ability to make human clones, to also be able to alter them.
hell he had the exact same reaction when he was told a woman he had found attractive in a movie was trans

The most common response to learning a a main character of a show is a minority is to go "oh, neat" before just getting on with their day. You know, maybe the fact that Internet Historian and Heeltobabyface were friends were red flags for both of them in hindsight.
Yeah he's right. Always has been. You'd have to do some serious mental gymnastics to think people like him or Tim Pool are on the left.
Because acting like a rational human being doesn't get the clicks.

The issue is like the “war on christmas”.

Their arguments were always disingenuous. I don't know what's more ridiculous, that fact that this man is so upset about something that has almost no impact on gameplay or story, or the fact that he wanted to be immersed into star field.
The game was ass. But the dudes reaction is so damn dumb
thats what people do when they play bgs games they want to be immersed
@@chaserseven2886 but star field?
@@ptassa270 yes they're are going to be people like that
The anti-wokes are beyond delusional.

you have two choices:
1) admit that your favourite media isn't without problems. while it has regrettable aspects, you still love it for its heart, not its hate
2) shit yourself screaming about how the mob wants to take away your movies because you agree with those parts and don't want to admit it
I really love this channel. It explained so many things about things I thought about when it comes to people being angry on the internet. Starfield Pronouns Guy seems like a guy that gets angry for everything
The game being boring has to do with 1000 empty planets, bad writing, cities that make no sense, outdated tropes, terrible characters.

Nah... it was definitely the doing of the dreaded "gender slider"
@@miniature030 LoL!
I always the main emotion in his rant to be betrayal - he enjoyed the game, it sucked him in, and then - PRONOUN JUMP SCARE
