It's definitely a case of reactionary pushback to social progress. Wherever strides in social equity are made there will be rabid reactionaries aggressively trying to push back. It wasn't so long ago when sexist, homophobic, racist, transphobic, etc. language was incredibly common and not really something that a lot of people really even noticed and just about every piece of popular media was created with a white, straight, male audience in mind. Now that that's changing a bit the people who actually liked, or at least weren't bothered by all those "isms" and liked being catered to almost exclusively are lashing out against anything that is challenging the status quo that they enjoyed for so long. It's not just a problem with these chuds either. They're just the loudest. This kind of thinking is pretty common amongst a lot of the "normal," "apolitical" (read: right wing but privileged enough that they don't have to think about it) folks who are perceived as being the politically disinterested "everyman," who are "divorced from political bias" and just "speak from a place of common sense." Which just helps launder the image of anti-woke nutcases like the ones referred to in this video.
In the 90s, the internet felt huge (almost infinite) but it was very local. You could find your little corner and it was good. There were appalling places filled with hateful people of every stripe, but you didnt have to engage with them. If your, say, Zombie-themed crochet page became toxic, you could find another one. Now, the internet feels tiny. We're all forced to share the same space, managed by tech-filth that spent their adolescence on racist message boards. I think of it a bit like what happened to cities in the 80s. All the small, independent bars, clubs, shops, museums, community spaces couldn't compete with giant shopping malls. Suddenly, a night out meant some awful chain bar full of the kind of people you could avoid in your old part of town.

Many people who used to get sucked down these rabbit holes are getting older and wiser, I mean, the majority of them were high school and college kids when Gamergate and Comicsgate were at their peak, and they’re starting to understand that all of this is and always has been bullshit. When I was with Midnight's Edge we did some streams with Lauren Chen and I thought nothing of it. I'm more on the liberal side, and even though she's a staunch conservative she seemed nice enough. Then Nerdrotic, Geeks and Gamers, and Ryan Kinel started to have what I call "explosive growth", that seemed unnatural. More recently I kept thinking there has got to be some kind of big money behind them. Getting people like Gavin MacInnes, Alex Jones and Vivek Ramaswamy seems to lend more credence to my instincts. Now with how it's been exposed how Lauren Chen has been receiving Russian money, it makes me wonder how deep does the rabbit hole go?

Milo hasn't been gone long enough. I recall that he basically endorsed pedophilia in a radio or podcast interview, which one exposed surprisingly cost him an invite to CPAC, and Breitbart parted ways with him as well as losing his book deal with a publisher. I can't imagine why any publishing company would have cut a deal with him in the first place.
This video was very surreal to watch as someone that was going down that rabbit hole in early high school The only reason I got out was I happened to make a bunch of queer friends at the time, which made a lot of these "anti-woke" channel's tactics less effective (I also realized I wasn't completely straight which kind of helped, but it was mainly the queer friends). I remember yellowflash made a video bashing that one non-binary star wars characters they made during the high republic and he said something like "How is Non Binary a thing, you can't transition to nothing" and originally that made sense to me some average teen on the internet that wasn't very informed on these topics, but the second I brought it up to my queer friend group they immediately explained what being non-binary was and I was like "oh that makes sense" It really is a pipeline, I got in through mainly yellowflash, clownfishtv, and the quartering, and just progressively kept going deep and deeper, it's almost shocking how mask off a lot of it is now They'd at least pretend they weren't homophobic, racist, or transphobic or stuff like. They'd say stuff like "I'm not racist, their just poorly written", or "I'm not homophobic it's just been shoved down my throat", now their just super open about it though
It’s both scary and a relief that they’re more open about it now. It makes it harder for people to fall down the pipeline as easily, but it also shows how proud a lot of these people are of being open bigots. At least they’re the minority.

Years ago (christ, well over ten now) I had thought to make UA-cam videos bitching about geek stuff that was pissing me but also praising stuff I liked and I had watch some of these people's video or those of their precursors. At first I thought them to be honest gripes about media, but over time noticed it was really just continuous performative outrage over and over again... that it was often a grift at best or rampant outright bigotry at the worst. That realization killed my desire to ever really try to be a UA-camr because it felt like in order to even just do well you had to take part in that crap playing off people's bigotries and insecurities as well as pander to the tribalism of fan culture in general... which I just... I just don't want to be that type of asshole. That's not to say I'm not an asshole (I am) I'm just not that type of asshole. And worst of all the internet grift-sphere has only gotten worse and even more toxic in the last several years... and far too many people are falling for it.
They presented them as honest critique at first which is how they got away with it for so long. They would point out faults of movies without talking about any positives. That came after the decade before it which was the whole Channel Awesome boom of hating on older movies that were terrible which came about after the AVGN channel hit the scene which complained about stupid NIntendo games made by LJN which were honestly kind of funny. To be honest, that’s the vibe I’ve gotten watching these anti woke channels. It’s all about complaining about nothing that doesn’t effect them and suck all the enjoyment of, well engaging in media in general. I don’t even get why they spout ‘woke’ and culture war like it’s a society problem when they couldn’t be more wrong about it. If I have to my take on it, it’s because the level of greed in these companies are getting out of hand and the work conditions worsened in the entertainment environment, especially the CGI department. Instead of focusing on these actual work effecting issues, they would rather focuses on petty complaints like how woke is killing entertainment, (no, that’s not the reason why.) and women and people of Colour being an issue. (if you honestly think POC and woman are a problem in movies and media, you need a reality check and look at yourself in the mirror.) my hot take of all this is that they really don’t care about the media they claim they are, maybe they did once upon a time, but with these constant complaining about the stupid woke stuff effected them more than they think, and in the end are no different than the greedy Aholes in CEO positions. I will say though that I also despise what Kennedy has done with Lucasfilm as a fan of Indy and SW for decades. My criticisms have to do with story, characters respecting of lore etc and not about how “woke” these projects allegedly are. There are a lot of us out here. Disliking a lot of what Disney has done with these franchises doesn’t automatically equal “anti woke”.

It wasn't so long ago when sexist, homophobic, racist, transphobic, etc. language was incredibly common and not really something that a lot of people really even noticed and just about every piece of popular media was created with a white, straight, male audience in mind.
Now that that's changing a bit the people who actually liked, or at least weren't bothered by all those "isms" and liked being catered to almost exclusively are lashing out against anything that is challenging the status quo that they enjoyed for so long.
It's not just a problem with these chuds either. They're just the loudest. This kind of thinking is pretty common amongst a lot of the "normal," "apolitical" (read: right wing but privileged enough that they don't have to think about it) folks who are perceived as being the politically disinterested "everyman," who are "divorced from political bias" and just "speak from a place of common sense." Which just helps launder the image of anti-woke nutcases like the ones referred to in this video.
In the 90s, the internet felt huge (almost infinite) but it was very local. You could find your little corner and it was good. There were appalling places filled with hateful people of every stripe, but you didnt have to engage with them. If your, say, Zombie-themed crochet page became toxic, you could find another one. Now, the internet feels tiny. We're all forced to share the same space, managed by tech-filth that spent their adolescence on racist message boards. I think of it a bit like what happened to cities in the 80s. All the small, independent bars, clubs, shops, museums, community spaces couldn't compete with giant shopping malls. Suddenly, a night out meant some awful chain bar full of the kind of people you could avoid in your old part of town.
As a politics junkie who spent the better part of a decade as part of a comicstube channel, I GREATLY appreciate you dissecting this all for people who don't live in both worlds. It's a hate campaign meant to radicalized people to the far right all the way down.

When I was with Midnight's Edge we did some streams with Lauren Chen and I thought nothing of it. I'm more on the liberal side, and even though she's a staunch conservative she seemed nice enough. Then Nerdrotic, Geeks and Gamers, and Ryan Kinel started to have what I call "explosive growth", that seemed unnatural. More recently I kept thinking there has got to be some kind of big money behind them. Getting people like Gavin MacInnes, Alex Jones and Vivek Ramaswamy seems to lend more credence to my instincts.

The only reason I got out was I happened to make a bunch of queer friends at the time, which made a lot of these "anti-woke" channel's tactics less effective (I also realized I wasn't completely straight which kind of helped, but it was mainly the queer friends). I remember yellowflash made a video bashing that one non-binary star wars characters they made during the high republic and he said something like "How is Non Binary a thing, you can't transition to nothing" and originally that made sense to me some average teen on the internet that wasn't very informed on these topics, but the second I brought it up to my queer friend group they immediately explained what being non-binary was and I was like "oh that makes sense"
It really is a pipeline, I got in through mainly yellowflash, clownfishtv, and the quartering, and just progressively kept going deep and deeper, it's almost shocking how mask off a lot of it is now
They'd at least pretend they weren't homophobic, racist, or transphobic or stuff like. They'd say stuff like "I'm not racist, their just poorly written", or "I'm not homophobic it's just been shoved down my throat", now their just super open about it though

Years ago (christ, well over ten now) I had thought to make UA-cam videos bitching about geek stuff that was pissing me but also praising stuff I liked and I had watch some of these people's video or those of their precursors. At first I thought them to be honest gripes about media, but over time noticed it was really just continuous performative outrage over and over again... that it was often a grift at best or rampant outright bigotry at the worst.
That realization killed my desire to ever really try to be a UA-camr because it felt like in order to even just do well you had to take part in that crap playing off people's bigotries and insecurities as well as pander to the tribalism of fan culture in general... which I just... I just don't want to be that type of asshole. That's not to say I'm not an asshole (I am) I'm just not that type of asshole. And worst of all the internet grift-sphere has only gotten worse and even more toxic in the last several years... and far too many people are falling for it.
They presented them as honest critique at first which is how they got away with it for so long. They would point out faults of movies without talking about any positives. That came after the decade before it which was the whole Channel Awesome boom of hating on older movies that were terrible which came about after the AVGN channel hit the scene which complained about stupid NIntendo games made by LJN which were honestly kind of funny. I don't blame AVGN for any of it. That was his idea to begin with. But man did the internet run with it and twist it into something nasty.

To be honest, that’s the vibe I’ve gotten watching these anti woke channels. It’s all about complaining about nothing that doesn’t effect them and suck all the enjoyment of, well engaging in media in general. I don’t even get why they spout ‘woke’ and culture war like it’s a society problem when they couldn’t be more wrong about it. If I have to my take on it, it’s because the level of greed in these companies are getting out of hand and the work conditions worsened in the entertainment environment, especially the CGI department. Instead of focusing on these actual work effecting issues, they would rather focuses on petty complaints like how woke is killing entertainment, (no, that’s not the reason why.) and women and people of Colour being an issue. (if you honestly think POC and woman are a problem in movies and media, you need a reality check and look at yourself in the mirror.) my hot take of all this is that they really don’t care about the media they claim they are, maybe they did once upon a time, but with these constant complaining about the stupid woke stuff effected them more than they think, and in the end are no different than the greedy Aholes in CEO positions. I just hope the term woke gets buried and forgotten about in the long run. (One last thing, where the hell does that marxist invading our culture thing come from? This is a good and important piece and I despise all of these people and what they stand for. I will say though that I also despise what Kennedy has done with Lucasfilm as a fan of Indy and SW for decades. My criticisms have to do with story, characters respecting of lore etc and not about how “woke” these projects allegedly are. There are a lot of us out here. Disliking a lot of what Disney has done with these franchises doesn’t automatically equal “anti woke”.
If you look at a live action disney remake and think "this would be better with more white people", that is immediately suspicious.
