Great video Dean, thank you for doing the cam belt and for taking time to show the fiddly bits, better than any other I’ve seen, I’ve done belts before but for some reason got hooked into letting my main dealer doing it on my Audi, now I have the confidence to do it myself. I’m very grateful. Yes to painted floor, parts washer and workbench 👍would the scissor lift be fixed or portable, just thinking portable gives you more flexibility maybe.
Great work there bud Scissor lift sounds like a plan with either racking or benches for tools /parts It doesn't happen over night some things you just do without (because) funds time space you'll get there. Great work Great channel
Really coming together now. This will be a great run around car. Made me chuckle about you being reported by the VW "inspector". It's hilarious isn't it, how dare you work outside procedure... urrggghhh. I would have said the same thing... let me hold that clipboard for you Mr know-all and show me how it's done. Good work on tidying up and painting the floor is a great idea. Got everything you need there, lift, engine hoist, weight bench… I’d put a bed and some carpet in there before the scissor lift 😂 I'd love a place like this of my own I'd be virtually living there!
My thoughts are why burn money on a second lift? Invest on a decent work bench (on lockable casters) so we don’t have to watch you struggling to rebuild an engine on a tyre/pallet and maybe get a parts washer with the money saved on a lift .etc Preparation is everything for floor painting, do your research!
Parts washer is a good shout! 👌🏼 second lift is for when I run out of space. Like I had to put the subframe and wheels back on the rs4 and push it outside which took a couple of hours. Where I second ramp would mean I could of just left it on there. Just ideas atm
@@SavingSalvage anything that helps keep the space tidy is a good idea, maybe some industrial racking could be an option too? Love your videos but they aren’t healthy for my ocd 😂
Know very little about the inner working of cars so enjoy watching your thorough explanations, although you do lose me sometimes. :) Enjoy the insights into your world and like how you go the extra mile to fix the cars you work on. Even if sometimes they don't need it. Would definitely buy a car of you!
Parts washer and bench sounds like a great idea although I can understand the use of the second ramp...just don't think there's as much need for it though. Keep up the good work mate
Nice to see the changes happening to your work shop. 2nd lift good, especially if able to find a lightly used one for a reasonable price. Color for the walls I recommend a light color over white, will look better longer, spraying the walls will go quicker. Epoxy floor paint holds up well and resistant to oils etc. The kit with the colored pieces hides dirt well. Nice to see how quickly you are able to do the Cambelt service.
I can’t stand a messy workplace so when you said you were going to start having a tidy up my OCD got me excited, then you started fixing the car and I died a little bit inside. 😂
Dean, clean and white wash the walls, would look fresh, but for the floor, you might want to consider some hard wearing decent interlocking floor matts, saves trying to decontaminate the floor of all the crap spilt on it and burning hours putting some type of paint down that ends up lifting off again and looking scruffy.
Common failure on these indeed also the cam adjuster is known to go bad and you might want to do that the same time while you're there. Would be a nice video.
Had to do this Service on my 2.0FSI (without the Turbo) Passat in the beginning of 2020. The parts are so expensive but my chain was extended by almost 1 tooth after 210.000km. I am so lucky i caught it before it jumped the teeth...
Darker colored floor is nice, but imagine loosing a screw, bolt or nut there! That is the reason I would probably stick to something of a lighter color. Anyway, I appreciate the new filming angles!
Good content thank you, May I suggest you research interlocking garage floor tiles rather than floor paint. Floor paint even the 2k stuff can fail and flake off
Good work swapping out the water pump, that's a great tip. I'd invest in some benches along one wall with a couple on big casters so you can wheel them alongside a car. Would save you working on the floor. Some bench tools (grinder and a pillar drill, little parts washer maybe?) And get a big'ol wheely bin so the rubbish can go straight in there instead of on the floor. Did you get your tyre machines installed and running?
Quality work mate well done. Just wondering, if you accidentally turned the cam or crank and messed up the alignment, what would you do then? How can to sort the timing out after that?
Did you make sure to get replacement engine mount bolts for when you re-install the engine mount? If they are stretch bolts, like that fitted to the 2.0TDI, then you have to make sure this is done, otherwise those bolts will loosen after a while.
Hi dean why did you get rob of the golf then and not just do it up and sell it when you had finished it and yes another lift would be good and hope you are staying safe and well
Excellent video brother. Keep it going. Other you tubers do loads of cosmetic stuff which is a bit naff sometimes where as you do the mechanical which I enjoy. Keep it going

Just let it run on idle up to temp. You can bleed the system using vacuum but that’s not really needed until you have a newer car with an electric water pump.
OK thanks for that. Was wondering if it could get an air lock as I changed the thermostat as it was never quite getting to temperature (about 80-85°) it now hits the 90° mark but my bottom hose is always cold. Heaters work fine but do have a slight noise when running. Might swap stat for a genuine part otherwise do you think head gasket? No sign of water in the oil n doesn't seem to be losing water either. 🤷♂️ Looking forward to the RS engine rebuild keep up the great content 👍👍👍
Tyre manufacturers and the the dealer I worked for mentioned if only fitting 2 new tyres put to the rear to avoid aquaplaning, must admit I always liked new tyres on the front but can be lethal in very heavy rain.
My cambelt is way overdue so I guess I'm on borrowed time. I wish it was easier and I'd have a go myself but I hate just taking it to a garage and leaving it there and not know what happens...........
@@SavingSalvage your most welcome.and I see you are localish to me .I'm at saffron Walden .I pass your Audi garage in Cambridge often going into Cambridge !

Slightly different. You will have 2 camshafts to put the belt over and a fuel pump. However these are easier to do as you have locking pins that lock all the shafts so it’s a lot harder to get wrong 👍🏽
I would definitely get a lift put there or just leave it as a space to leave a car there if you are waiting on parts for it and it will look a lot better with the wall painted and floors painted. I always thought the same as you until I did an engine swap in my Golf, they’re so easy, I’ve done 8-10 now. The fear comes from getting it wrong but as long as you mark and check everything twice they’re fine, just like changing any other belt really but, most tensioners have the guides Dean showed so you can’t really set that incorrectly anymore. Most places start at 3+ hours labour for a cambelt and WP change so it’s a hefty saving, also, have someone who is confident giving you a hand :)

When the engine is running, should the Auxiliary belt tensioner have movement. Like a visible wiggle ? Thanks
Yeah shouldn’t be really tight otherwise it will stress the bearings on the aux pulleys. But also you shouldn’t see any movement really.
