For media consumption, this is a fantastic improvement. Instead of the claustrophobic feeling of wearing a scuba mask it is more like just wearing very large glasses. Much more comfortable.
Game changer. physical games that create a lot of body heat just got so much better. My eyes are less fatigued, and I honestly don't even notice outside unless I actively look through the sides. It's also noticeably lighter, which makes it easier for me to use as someone with head injuries.
You can also use a halo strap without the facial interface where the quest sits just in front of your face with no contact whatsoever, it's been my way to go
@@JarrenRocks yes for portability/laying down the simpler straps the better. also the kkcobvr allows you to flip it over your head visor style so its very nice for tinkering/ programming
I know a lot of people take the Quest outdoors. “DO NOT” take it outside with this facial interface on. You would have a chance of burning marks into your screens due to the magnification of the lens when they catch the sun’s rays. “Ants under a magnifying glass.” You have been warned. This has concluded our public service announcement.
This is a very good tip that I hadn’t considered. I wonder how long it would have to be in direct sunlight for it to have any impact. A stray glare here and there might not cause issues?
@@JarrenRocks oh yeah. The sun on the lenses can refract at different angles, it would probably be a matter of seconds I would think before permanent damage is done and would not be covered by Meta. This is definitely not for outdoors use with this facial interface. No problem. 👍🏻👍🏻
@@OmaewaXdepends on the lighting you are in. The better the lighting in your environment, the better the image looks in the headset for the pass though.

You should do the apple solo knit band mod if you don't like the quest 3 head straps. It's apparently more comfortable for the quest than is is for the Vision Pro. I plan to do it one I get my hands on a solo knit band.
I actually almost purchased one, but the price was a bit higher than I cared for for just a strap. But I've used the AVP and it is nice. Might get it later.
Like you, I have the same sense of the way to use my quest 3. I cut the strap the same way you did many months ago to have it as minimally invasive as possible. The big struggle for me WAS the facial interface(s). None worked well without a big negative one way or another. This Open Facial Interface is a highly underrated and under-talked about invention Meta came up with! It actually flexes and bends to mold to the face shape which even out all pressure points! It's a must get honestly
I was also thinking of removing those side hinges to make it more flexible when the strap is tight. It doesn't have as much give and flex as it looks like it should. If you decide to hack it first, I'll be next! Wack those off and let us know if its still usable, lol. You first, then me!
In a perfect world, I’d love to be able to fold them up, and given I still have the face interface I think the next step would be to shorten it to at least that length. Let me think about it a little bit more, if I do, I’ll let you know!
@@yuanchang2306 I’ve used the Apple Vision Pro and the camera quality/OS really makes Passthrough more enjoyable/usable. Just not worth it for the price. But glasses like Meta’s Orion glasses are clearly the end goal.
@@OmaewaX yeah I literally cut it with scissors and it works fine. Maybe 5-10% more pressure on my face to keep it from falling down I move the strap up a little higher to compensate
Hey Jarren, I feel the same as you about the top strap. You should try the mod I created (free to print) that allows you to fit the Apple Vision pro solo knit band onto your Quest 3. Its great in that its comfortable and allows quick adjustments using the "fit knob" dial. I bought the open interface as soon as it was available. Mostly great, like the detachable pad system. The FOV could be better but its hackable with a dremel (that slider doesn't fully close the gap from the pad to the quest unless you open it up 6-7mm)
Hey, I actually looked heavily into using the solo knit strap, and I’ll still probably try it out given it offers just a little bit more support than the current band. And interesting note on the FOV-I’d be very interested in trying that.
@@JarrenRocks Those side supports really need to come off in order to allow max FOV. If you notice, when you push the middle slider forward, those side supports force the sides of the facial gasket to come in as well, making it narrower, this increases pressure on your face. Its like Meta intentionally designed it that way I suppose to fit a variety of faces, wide and narrow. But if you want max FOV, you'll have to clip those side supports. It will make it harder to remove the facial interface though. In my case, if it works, I may not ever remove it, lol.
I don't wear glasses personally, but I've seen in comments that people say it does work with glasses, yes. The thicker pad also apparently helps accommodate glasses frames.
It is the same fabric that’s used on the default pad, so yeah it could get a little gross. And this fabric is actually polyester, so it’s just a different type of plastic basically.
I added a spare grey pleather one from the vr cover quest 2 kit. Not an exact fit, but close enough and super comfortable. Tried a Q3 silicone cover over the stock cushion and that didn’t work well at all.
You are actually not supposed to use it in direct sunlight as it could damage the device. But no I do not think it would be hard to see. I often use mine without a facial interface at all and it is very easy to see even in bright conditions.
@@lucasboerman3397 another person commented and mentioned that the lenses can focus sunlight and damage the device internals, so I think I’d have to be cautious about direct light. That said, it’s still reasonably bright, so daylight use indoors/in the shade would be fine.
Any comment on immersion using the open interface? I use my Quest 3 much more for gaming, so having everything closed in tends to greatly reduce outside distraction and keep me immersed more in the game world. Also, how is the comfort? I found the stock Quest 3 interface very hard and uncomfortable after a short period of time wearing it and ended up swapping it for a nicer 3rd party one pretty quick.
I immediately swapped out the cushion for a pleather one. Soo much better. As far as immersion, if the room is dark, all is well. But having the ability to integrate some low light from the room while watching a movie really seems to give a feeling of an increased field of view. Plus you can see your phone or snacks more easily. I really just wish there was a magnetic solution, so swapping out interfaces would be a breeze.
I have a full review coming next week and I cover immersion and a bit of comfort. Comfort isn't my main concern most times (ironically), I'm optimizing for portability.
If you're doing passthrough? Maybe, there's still all the camera warping effects with are rather uncomfortable. For immersive experiences I think it'd also be less desirable because it removes you from the virtual environment, but i'll have to try it out and will let you know in my full review.
It's not that. Agreed the passthough isn't great, but its good, and this help. Having your peripheral vision seeing the world around around gives you the perception of a huge passthough FOV. I've been running a halo strap without any facial interface for the last year and im never going back to a normal interface, BUT after using this interface for the past 2 weeks, yea, it works and its comfortable. IF you really want the key to make this work i suggest 2 things. 1. color changing and dimmable lights in your play space and a IR light projector so you can dim the lights to your hearts content, even to pitch black, and still be able to track flawlessly. Best part of being able to see around you.. NO MORE TRIPPING OVER STUFF!!! like cats!
