The most useful thing I’ve learned from watching Gary work is to be patient & work with meticulous planning & clean, clean & clean some more.

Watch the CarNinja. He puts cable ties in the valve cover bolt holes, around the outside to keep the gasket in place. Once the cover is in place, cut and remove the ties and bolt it down. Works for him.

Beautiful car you have there, and nice work! It helps to have all of the necessary parts on hand and all laid out ready to go, before you start. I recognized the transmission items right off, since my 64 Cadillac also utilizes the TH400 transmission. That trans is practically bulletproof with the proper maintenance. Drag racers here in the US love them. I rehabbed mine, and at age 57 all I found bad were two bushings and an oil seal. It was in great shape otherwise. It got all new clutches, bushings, and seals regardless.
Very enjoyable and relaxing to watch. Puts me in mind of earlier days spent fettling my Nortons. Satisfying to know things are done right.
Amazing how patient you are and the attention to detall simply amazing.

Fantastic Gary. In a way this reminds me of when I was a child back in the early seventies and started building airfix kits. At first it was a basic 1/72 Spitfire than came with glue a brush and three small Viles of paint and I was so proud of the end results. Fast forward a few years entering my teenage years and then came the much more complex 1/12th scale blower Bentley with its hundreds of parts which needed a methodical and careful approach with lots of research and everything layed out for each stage of the build but in taking this approach success is ensured .
Start of with something simple and over the years with skills gained you have taught yourself to be able to tackle something very complex such as this as you remember, in the end, it still is, a kit of parts!

I used to do this to my cars in the 70s and 80s - I miss it (in a warped way) but am glad that’s history now….

I love how everything bolts together with metal pieces -- no snapping fragile plastic pieces off and on. Working on these might be involved, but it must be satisfying.

The trans will need approx 8 qts to start. The filter is held by a single "shoulder bolt" that allows the filter to be loose and float a bit. Your "O" ring must also be replaced while in there. Want to freshen up the engraved knobs? Use a "paint craylon" and they look like new.

Hi Gary new to your channel enjoying you videos. You love your classic cars it shows so much so jealous. Having been a mechanic in the 70s through to the 90s cars were so much more enjoyable simple and basic to work on. Dread to think how much that service to the Rolls would cost in a Rolls Royce dealership keep to videos coming Colin

The oil level float on the side of the sump is white metal and deforms easily from over tightening the hardware. The flange must be checked for flatness or the new seal will leak.
I agree. I used a silicone seal now available which is thicker and deeper, allowing for the deformity. Kind regards.

I met Gary in 1997 when he was appearing in an ITV drama about WW1, called "The Unknown Soldier". I was an engineering student working that summer as a film extra. I was only thinking about that experience recently when I see the thumbnail to this video and thought:

You can buy a Spark plug refitting tool it is like a piece of rubber hose with a handle like a screw driver so you can guide the plug in and stat to turn it and will not cross thread

They used to say buying a Rolls Royce was a great idea in terms of maintenance, because it was 1950s straight - forward engineering, making them simple to maintain. However, through the complexity of the layout, I can see how certain items could get neglected, perfectly illustrated here by Gary.

The sump bolts will NOT come loose if they are torqued properly
Hi Duncan. I kinda disagree with you there. For some unexplainable reason these bolts do work loose sometimes. It’s just expected. It may be due to shrinking and expanding of the gasket under the incredible heat these big V8’s put out. Metal to metal you’re ok but I once had a strange experience where a road wheel on a Mercedes’ I restored kept working a wheel loose because I’d repainted them and it was the layer of paint in between! Now I always make sure the bolt contact surface is clean metal. Kind regards and thanks for watching.

I'm surprised that the engine valve tappets weren't checked, with the rocker cover removed!
Aren’t they hydraulic tappets?

I have a Rolls-Royce mpw and I love watching your videos to learn more about it. I I know one of my rocker covers needs doing but I think to do it myself is a bit out of my league. I did pay to get it done about a year ago but it’s leaking again, you don’t do other peoples cars do you?
Not many competent, passionate mechanics around for these cars unfortunately, that's what's off putting about owning these.

A perfect video because I have a Silver Shadow and need to do service on my car so I will wait for your next video! Maybe anyone know if you disassemble the carburettors on the same way on Silver Shadow II? Your car seems to be a earlier Silver Shadow.
Earlyish. 75 was on a changeover year I think. SU’s on mine. Regards.

U.S. models have an air pump with antlers that have to be removed as well , hassle.

When you removed the brake lines to get the rocker cover off, did you have to bleed the brakes after?
Hi, no. Don’t need to as they go to the brake pumps which run and build pressure off the crankshaft when the engine is running. Regards.

Question: I had the opportunity to buy a 78 Silver Wraith II about 7 years ago and I did not because a mechanic that works on them in my area told me in the future I will not be able to buy parts. He said Rolls Royce has stopped making parts for the older cars.
Is that true?
Hi David. It’s partly true but Introcar have invested in research and reproducing parts no longer available. So they’re making obsolete parts accessible, at affordable prices and parts that are in most cases, better than the original 50 year old parts. What type of paint did RR use back in the d’éventées, was it cellulose ?

hi gary do you have to take engine out for hydraulic tappets replacement please or could iit be done with engine in please
Hi, no. Remove the rocker/valve covers, carbs, intake manifold and the big plate with all the bolts that houses the two brake pumps and everything is visible and accessible. The tappers on the v8’s fill with oil and are self adjusting but I take it you’re replacing? Sometimes a tappet like knocking noise can be mistaken and is actually a brake pump. Dry or with a broken rod inside. They are designed to snap at the ends if the pressure builds up too high in the system due to faulty brake valves regulating the accumulators. So maybe put a stethoscope on the brake pumps first with the engine running to check if the noise is coming from them. Regards.
I presume all the fasteners and tools are imperial not metric ? Do Japanese spark plugs work properly with the gap set in thou ?
I have to say I’d have preferred the rocker covers just cleaned and replaced with their original factory patina finish, instead of the rattle-can refresh… they are so buried only a mechanic would notice, it’s otherwise bad form for a RR to be seen with the bonnet up. 😊
Yep I think UNF. I get what you prefer on rocker cover finish but it’s personal preference and I like it clean and easy to maintain. Interesting your comment on plug gaps. Another thing I like to take into account is gasoline versus petrol, different fuel octanes for different countries….cars will be tuned accordingly with different plug and points gaps, timing adjusted, advanced or retarded …I mean the list goes on. Mine runs great. No misfires and smooth tickover and pickup. So, I’ll probably keep my gaps and timing as it is. Thanks for watching and kind regards.

But yes. No electronic ignition. I think the points and condenser seem to last a very long time on these cars for some reason and they work well. I think problems arise once again from the extreme heat these big V8’s create. They bake and harden ignition leads. Thanks for watching.

I've got to do a turbo r gaskets tomorrow I put some rear suspension spheres on now the poxy thing won't raise do you bleed the system on that bleed valve near the right rear wheel
