I'm here two years later having all those feelings. I love old movies and the style of old movie theaters. It's sad that people probably didn't know half of these movies by the time the ride closed. I feel like when this park opened it was really celebrating the history of amazing movies and it's gotten more and more about just appealing to everyone without a cohesive idea.
I agree
Well, except for the 150 other videos of the ride on youtube
Rode this for the first time not long after the park opened in '89 with my sister who NEVER liked being the center of attention. We sat directly behind the actor, and when the villain said the line, "Sleepy little town", he added, "ain't it lady", and looked right at my sister. She replied without hesitation and with perfect attitude, "yeah, sleepy", and got everyone around us laughing. Such a great memory of her...she loved this ride
I sat in the front row of this ride, and when the gangster was about to leave the car to steal the jewel, I said, "You shouldn't touch that!" she replied to me, "Eh, shut up kid." I just love how they stay in character! XD
Lol

So sad this ride closed. I loved it so much; it really gave you that perfect classic movie atmosphere
when I went to Disney world in April, my group went to Hollywood studios so we could be able to go on this ride. Sadly the ride was closed for repairs. An employee on the ride saw that we looked upset and had a conversation with us. we told him we came all the way from Michigan and we were sad that we couldn't go on the ride because it was all we talked about. In response to this, the awesome crew member gathered his fellow co-workers and did the ride for us in front of the building. One was the hostess, others were the mob guy, a sound effects guy, a guy doing the background music, and let me tell you, it was AM AZ ING. A giant crowd gathered and everyone was laughing and my group was saying for the rest of the day how much better it was than the ride. We were so touched that they did that for us. It just shows how much Disney cares about people who visit the parks.
Moral of the story: Disney is freaking awesome.
Emily Claire r/thathappened🙄
Emily Claire omg cool
Sounds like bull
Emily Claire THATS THE BEST THING IVE EVER HEARD
That's awesome!
Omg I remember when I was on this ride and we had just gotten to wizard of oz and this British teenager behind me screamed ..."omg its Alice in wonderland" ...it was so funny
Deleted
That IS funny!
Thanks for the memories! Can't believe this ride is gone now. 😪
I'm so sad that this ride is closing. It really did capture what mgm studios stood for and even did with their new idea of Hollywood studios (placing you in the middle of the movies) I understand that tcm is ending their sponsorship but I think they should've changed it to Disney movies instead of having a Mickey and Minnie ride.
that would be amazing!
sadly I never got to rife on it and I really wanted to but I only went to Disney world once when I was very little but it does look really amazing I really wish I could have gotten a chance to ride it.
I meant ride
I would have liked a ride with Mickey showing the evolution of Disney movies
The replacement is nice, but it's just not as grand in scope. And you can't use tech to replace that combination of animatronics and live actors and that switch at the end that you didn't expect.
Ah... I remember the first time I rode this... back in 2012 or 2013.
The gangster, Mugsy's the name I believe, was EPIC. I sat 2 rows behind the controller and was truly frightened when he said "what're you lookin' at kid?"
My favorite line was "Hey, lady, watch this" *POP* "No more red light!". The way he said it sounded so... authentic. Unfortunately... I've never seen another gangster who played their role as well since then.
RIP Great Movie Ride. You were one of my favorites.
One of my most vivid and favorite memories of Disney as a child. Just learned it’s gone now. So sad I’ll never get to go on it again.😢
This was the best ride at Disney's Hollywood studios theme park I especially liked the Tarzan scene with all of the wild animals in a tropical jungle.
First time I went to Hollywood Studios me and my mom went on this ride first. We had no idea what to expect and simply did it just as something to start off the day. I couldn't find any ride videos at the time, don't know why. But It was absolutely incredible. We loved it so much we rode it twice. And now whenever anyone is going we tell them not to miss it. I am a thrill seeker but going on this ride, knowing nothing about it, I think it was the best ride I've ever been on. So great. :3
Here's a really random fun fact: you know how there is a front half of an airplane on this ride? Well Disney originally bought one whole Lockheed plane for the GMR, so Disney cut the plane in half, and the front half of the plane is the front half of the plane in the GMR. The back half of the plane is currently used in the plane crash scene on the Jungle Cruise ride.
real interesting fun fact, They originally thought they were getting the plane from the movie casablanca
Why is that a "random" fact? Why didn't you just say "Here's a fact?" I don't think anybody knows what random means anymore.
Excuse me for saying random *sarcasm*
You are randomly excused.
You are randomly weird
Man, this was one of my top 3 favorite rides of all time :( so many fond memories on The Great Movie Ride. One time, my sister and I left my parents to go ride this by ourselves, and when we went on the ride, there was a family that was from a different country taking photos of everything using the flash. I honestly didn’t really mind it, it’s so hard to be upset at the happiest place on earth. Back to the family, so when the robber entered the ride, he said “Hey! You with the camera! If you don’t turn your flash off, I’m gonna go back there and beat you with it!”. My sister and I laugh hysterically at it to this day. That was around 7 years ago. It’s so unfortunate that Disney removed this ride. In my opinion, I think it’s not a smart idea to get rid of these historical rides for things like Star Wars and movies like Frozen. At least we have great footage of this ride that puts you right into the perspective of the person recording this video.
R.I.P. great movie ride 💔
Watching this in 2019 just to watch back the greatness of this ride:(
The best ride in Hollywood Studios...RIP.
I loved this ride, and for obvious reasons, Alien was my favourite part. A little boy in the seat in front of me, probably 10 or younger, was scared of that part however. Poor kid, his dad had to hold his head and comfort him he was so scared.
*sigh* I loved this ride (and still do) rip, you truly are the great movie ride...
IM STARTING TO MISS DISNEY FOR THE 101993838833 TIME AGAIN 😭😭😭
IM GOING IN 7 DAYS!!!!
Relatable cause I used to have a season pass but then I moved away 😭😭😭😭
I never been there I am going soon
Never got the chance to ride this before the announced closure in august of this year
Rip TGMR. You will be missed.
Fun fact: Hollywood studios will now be the only Disney park to not have a ride operating from opening day
I was there last january, we got stucked on the Wizard of Oz part for several minutes, those pitching voices signing non stop still give me nightmares LOL
And the Alien changed positions!! it was on the roof before!
It used to be in both places. They ruined it and didn't fix elements.
I miss it to stinking much
The best ride at the Hollywood Studios.
This was one of my favorite rides at Disney world. I can’t believe it’s gone. 😢Please don’t ever delete this video.
R.I.P. Great Movie Ride i will miss you :(
Screw disney for closing this ride. They had absolutely no reason to close this ride. It was fantastic!
TCM stopped sponsoring it and no one else would pick it up. Disney Parks don't have access to the endless bank account of the entire Walt Disney company, and without anyone to help pay for the aging animatronics, they decided it was better to move on. Sad to see it go, but they definitely had a reason.
also two years later, but i rode this when i was 6 and apparently had nightmares for weeks?
Definitely think it had something to do with just how expensive it is to maintain all those animatronics. My sister loved this she went on it with her fiance (now husband) in 2012 on their honeymoon. She was so sad when I told her it ceased operations in 2017 :(
this ride was LEGENDARY. i’d give anything to ride on it one more time.
Honestly one of the most underrated rides in all of Disney World. So much fun!
It's amazing Disney can make those robots so realistic some of them like the wizard of oz
I do not understand that
I love this ride!!! I hope they never get rid of it. Such fun classic Hollywood/Disney. With all the new to be added, at least a little bit of the old is needed to balance it out.
Grant Mitchell Well, now their replacing it in august, too bad my family is going to WDW next year :(
I remember riding this back in 2004 when I was 7. It was my first time at Disney. This ride is the one I remember the most, mainly because I was terrified during the alien and mummy parts! The aliens used to be on the ceiling. The mummy part looks like it was changed too, or maybe my memory isn’t serving me well lol! Sad to know that my most memorable ride is no longer in operation.
So everyone knows, The gangster and person alternates every time you ride the ride. It is part of the acting process of the park employees and it also adds to the ride in my opinion. Hope you enjoy your ride! I've been going to Disney since I was about 6 months old and I will soon be 20 and many friends have interned and worked there. It's a lovely process and I hope to do a college program there one day.
I saw the Jim henson stone and almost cried.
This looks fabulous....wish it was there in the 90's when I went with Dad.
Elise Scarpa It opened in May1989 and was there until August 14, 2017 but only in WDW, never Disneyland.
Great ride, but I just wish they could include an animatronic scene from Gone with the Wind
Csssai
MAd
Good question. I'll try to film one with that version really soon. I might be going there this weekend. :)
The bit where you go into the Nostromo, the only time we ever got something approaching a proper Alien experience in a theme park. What a shame the Extra Terror-estrial encounter didn't get a chance in its planned Alien configuration.
Rest in peace great movie ride, you will be rembered
Rest in peace, great movie ride
they really need to update the anamatronics but i love this ride so much especially the music
As a matter of fact, they are totally updating it starting next year! News came out yesterday and from what I've heard, GMR just got a partnership with TCM and they're going to edit the the film you see in the right before you load and the finale! I can't wait to see the changes in store!
they are still SO impressive for their time

This ride is great, I remember going on it as a kid once. I also remember knowing something was off about the "people" in the scenes. I wish I wasn't so off-put by animatronic figures. I guess it's that whole uncanny valley thing; they look real but not real enough. Some of them are good, some of them definitely need some updating.
Huh, the wicked witches movements looked just as blocky as they did in the original. Modern technology is advancing to a whole new level of weird.
Taryntheterrible101 Margaret Hamilton was a real bitch, check yourself.
YeaH, I noticed that they were all animatronic
When I was 5 I thought the Mary Poppins animatronic was real and I waved to her lmao
The Marshmellow Gamer The monk in the jewel scene is a real person
this ride is so underrated! it feels so surreal that i was on this ride only 8 months ago. i'm going back twice this year though, so it's okay.
It saddens me to know that this wonderful ride no longer exists!
This ride was awesome when I went!
I surprisingly got the Western scene so seeing the Gangster one is surely a different experience!
I've been on the ride so many times, and she was the worst gangster ever!
lol
The accent is supposed to be mid 1920's Chicago gangster, not Middle Eastern or whatever she was lol
@@hankwest1946 some people speak with an accent, dipshit
Lanny Benny i was thinking the same thing kinda ruined the experience
I went on this ride back in 1993, it was awesome!
Man, I miss the moments of total unease this ride gave with its settings. XDD The gangster scene, the alien scene, the treasure room... Even as an adult, I felt like I was just safer in the vehicle. And I LOVED IT. 😳❤️
I absolutely loved this whole park. I loved this ride. cant wait to go back with my kids when i have them a ride it again
Realy miss this ride. Very nice recording. But sadly missing the end part. The impressive movie compilation.
I’m so sad I’ll never get to see this ride. Thank you for having this!
Last time i rode this ride was in 2003, and the Mugsy (a guy) on the ride was spectacular. Even reacted to the cat. front row seat, and i had to sit next to him
What a shame to see this ride be closed down. This was an iconic ride of cinema celebration that inspires us to view and make more great cinema. It’s a pity that Disney lost this ride only to replace it with rides that instead only capitalize on the movies and shows that it has dominion over. I’m a huge fan of science fiction, especially with settings in the future and in outer space, and the part of the ride that features a scene from the movie “Alien” was legendary. But the entire ride was overall such an amazing celebration of many movie genres. Not to mention, just waiting in line for the ride to start was an incredible experience in of itself. The decor and trailers of classic movies shown while waiting in line for the ride to start was just as much part of the whole fun as being on the ride itself. Perhaps a partial motivation to remove this ride was increased cultural sensitivities toward the parts of the ride featuring weapons? If so, these sensitivities have destroyed our appreciation for a good show. What we see in the movies does not impair our good judgment about handling such weapons in reality. The same goes for anything else viewed in the movies. Even if the motivation to remove the ride was more of a focus on numbers and profit making, this motivation is just as shameful a reason for removal of such a classic ride. A great article about the shame in removing this ride can be read here: .
This ride KICKS. ASS. Awesome, maybe needs an update
I love the Wizard of oz movie. when I was a little kid i used to be scared of the witch my first time on this ride was in 1993 I went for Make a wish trip I was 3.
By the end of 2016, they should really redo the montage and maybe even the ride, so many great movies has passed as so many are nearing it's time to shine.
I swear, the version I rode had footage from Tangled and Frozen at the end.
SourceFilmGamer old movies will never pass this ride is a reminder of the classics
SourceFilmGamer Too bad their now replacing the ride, guess that idea of yours will never come true.
Thanks for the info!
I LOVED THIS RIDE OMG!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for recording all of these
Great picture quality! Fab work. Love this ride
I really miss this ride. It was one my all time favorites. ☹️
My #1 favorite ride in Disney's Hollywood Studios! I hope they never tear this ride down. Maybe they could re-do some of the movie scenes and update them. But this ride is a complete classic! < 3
Sarah Waldron they announced at D23 today that this ride is closing down in August 2017 :( its getting replaced with a Mickey ride. I wish it wasn't closing down I'm doing to WDW in 2018.
Lundmunchkins I'm also going in 2018 and I was very much looking forward to riding this again as it has always been one of my favourites. So now I'm here to relive the ride :(
The last time I was on this fun ride tour was June 1990.I was 25 than really nice place.
This was a classic Disney ride and should have stayed put like the other classic rides. It is very disappointing that it was closed in 2017! That’s like taking away the Spaceship Earth ride away from Epcot or taking away Pirates of the Caribbean from Magic Kingdom. What a shortsighted move to take away this masterpiece of the imagineers.
Thank you very much . Haven't been to Disneyland in 40 years and will never get to Disney World apparently, at least not physically, but I'm going to now! Why didn't I think of UA-cam to Disney?
The Wizard of Oz looked like the coolest part.
I really miss this ride!
I loved The Great Movie Ride. I went on it with my family throughout my first trip to Florida when I was 5 years old
I have visited Disney World 6 times in the last 20 years, and while I love this ride, especially the first time or two, it really needs some updating. I would like to see some other movies from the classic era included as well as some of the newer films. I think this would provide more interest from younger guests too.
I wish they added Breakfast at Tiffany's, such an iconic movie that is known by almost everybody.

OMG I WAS ON THAT RIDE WHEN I WHERE RECORDING!!! I was was the one looking at her :p
How freaky. It must have given you shivers down the spine when you saw yourself!
I love going on the great movie ride at disney's hollywood studios and it was fantastic! :-)
I loved this ride the first time, and I was really lucky to get a pretty magical experience
I sat in the front so I got to FULL EXPERIENCE
Thanks for posting all of these Disney World videos. The quality is really good. I also like the way you don't commentate. It gives the viewer a good perspective on the sights and sounds of the parks. Keep them coming.
Sad that this ride isn't still in operation. Best 20 minute ride I've ever been on and one of the best rides I rode at Walt Disney World Hollywood Studios
RIP May 1 1989-August 13 2017
This is amazing, how well they recreated this from SoCal
Didn't the alien used to come down from the ceiling? It did when I was there, around 2005.
You know, last time I went, I saw something in the ceiling, and it never came down. My cousin and I were so prepared to get scared, but nothing happened. It was probably disabled for safety concerns.
I was just on It today it still pops out Of the ceiling
It still does pop out of the ceiling, where it has even in 2005. Trust me, I just went on it.
***** I just went on the ride today. It comes down from the ceiling, goes back up after a bit, and then comes from the right. If your in the middle of the car thing you may not see it at all.
I miss this ride so much!!
Disney does everything so well. Why can't they find better actors for this ride.
same with me but I grew out of it and now I am a man
Thanks so much for sharing this ride! I had a blast!
They normally only run the "A Track" on very busy days. It's cheaper to run the "B Track" (The Gangster Scene) due to the lack of pyrotechnics. You'll notice there is normally a tram in front of yours that is empty.
One of my favorite rides at Hollywood Studios! I have to ride it every single time I go.
The train thing broke down right when we hopped in...so we were sitting there for 15 minutes looking for the rare hidden minnie.
hey ,can not find me
I’m not really a fan of the decisions that Disney makes but their decision to remove this ride from MGM studios and replace it with a kiddy Mickey ride is just beyond fucking stupid. This ride was a damn masterpiece.
May the great movie ride Rest In Peace
This was one of my favorite rides ever😞 I miss it soooo much❤️😭😭
This ride looks so freaking cool, I wish they didn’t get rid of it!!
I do not understand why they closed this ride. One of the best at Walt Disney World. Senseless.
I love this ride , my fav part is the Wizard of oz scene its so amazing
I remember being terrified of the Xenomroph just hanging upside down on the Alien part of the ride. I was like 10 years old. Amazing ride though.

This ride is awesome......Love the old movies. You do a great job PopSong1! I really enjoy watching the videos. Makes me want to go back!
Great ride
Very sad this classic ride is gone forever 😔😔 rip great movie ride 1989 to 2017 glad I got so many memories from this ride you will be missed
That gangster lady was totally phoning it in.
Terrible job. Like, really, make it look real..
couldn't hear half the things they were saying either.
Agreed. She just didn’t seem like she was into it at all.
Thank you for the upload. Your videos are really fun to watch.
This ride freaked my sister out when Mugsy got on. She said 'We gotta call the 911." And my mom left her phone with my Aunt, Who wasn't riding, xD It was great how realistic they made this ride look!
God I miss this ride... Thanks for uploading this
I've recently gotten a new appreciation for this ride. I think it's the best in DHS. I feel sorry I only got to ride once on our 2012 trip, but it was a good one,
i love this ride!! I also love you too Pops!!!
